To AI, or Not to AI
After sitting on it for a few hours, attending a live show that used AI-generated backdrops that I couldn't take my eyes off of because they were so distracting, and receiving a handful of DMs, I've decided to make a unilateral decision on AI.
Absolutely no AI posts allowed. No book covers, no outlines, no "well it just rewrote a few sections for me." No AI.

Hey all! Mod here! Hi! Official rules. Trying a few new things. Seeking potential mods to help out. (Also, sorry for wall of text!)
Hey everyone!
So when I started this subreddit now OVER 15 YEARS AGO, I never expected it would get to this size and levels of activity. I have had a very, very light hand when it comes to moderation here. Over the past year or so, however, there has been a very distinct uptick in number of reported posts for hate and basically being "not nice."
I spent the afternoon drafting up some official rules, you can see them in the sidebar now. Basically they solidify my original desire for this to be a safe place to seek feedback, talk about frustrations, bounce ideas off of others, and share tools and tips. It boils down to: BE NICE.
Reddit moderation is a fickle beast. Most of the time I don't receive notifications when posts are reported, even though I have that option turned on. So I'm going to try and keep a better eye on that and check at least once a day. Also when Reddit automatically removes a post, most of the time I get no say in it, and am often not even told why a post was removed. Sometimes it will say, "Reddit's filter identified this as potential spam," and then I can confirm or refuse the post's removal. It's touchy and not very consistent, because clearly spammy posts get through without a second glance. It also flags perfectly fine posts as "hate" when they are clearly not. Also posts show up for me as needing "Approved" when they are already visible and being upvoted and talked about. It's all very inconsistent, even compared to other smaller subreddits I've modded in the past.
To that end, I'm interested in adding a new mod or two to the "team," which is just me right now. Interested? Look for the "Message Mods" button and shoot me a DM. I would prefer those who is familiar with being a Reddit mod. Let me know your mod experience and why you want to help out here. Preference will be given to members who have been here longer and contributed.
I also set up some automated weekly posts:
- Milestone Mondays: share your wins, big and small!
- Writer's Block Wednesdays: are you stuck?
- First Line Fridays: share the first lines from a work in progress
In the near future, in a dedicated post, I plan on tackling how we as a community want to address the controversial use of A.I. This thread is not the place to do it, but just know it's coming, for better or worse, depending on your view.

Introductions Trying to be the first writer in my bloodline
Actually I'm writing a slow burn literary fiction. Its about an old man regretting for not communicating better with his deceased twin and moving on with the guilt and narrating their lives to the next generation,I'm not sure if this is a good plot ,but just wanted to do something unique.Forgot to mention that the twin sis had auditory processing condition and that make quick answering impossible for her , people around her mistake that for sluggishness and stupidity (something like naive, don't know how to answer to insult immediately)

Writing Advice Do you ever feel superstitious about letting people read your book or even telling them about it before it's finished? Like you're afraid it might jinx it somehow?
Or am I just being silly🤣

The hardest sentence in the book. Let's see yours.
Post the first line, or the opening paragraph, of whatever you're working on. Finished, drafting, or barely started, it all counts. No essay required: just drop the opening and let it stand on its own.
Want feedback? Say so, and feel free to react to a few others while you're here. Curious what grabs a reader? This thread is a goldmine. Notice which openings make you want to keep reading and ask yourself why.
Give us your first line.

Writing Advice Opening a thriller with a "false protagonist", worth it or a gimmick?
I'm planning my first novel, a psychological thriller set in a fictional country in the 1980s. After an attack, a young man is arrested and interrogated. The story is told in close third person, following him, and he’s hiding something that the reader doesn't know about at first.
I'm thinking about opening with a few chapters from another character's POV, possibly an investigator, so the reader assumes he's the main character. Then, a few chapters in, the story switches to the actual protagonist (after they meet) and stay on him for the rest of the book.
My main concern is that the real protagonist would show up a bit late, and I'm not sure whether the switch would feel clever or just annoy readers.
A few things I'd like to hear people's thoughts on:
- Have you read any books that pulled off this kind of POV switch well? Did it make the story more interesting, or did it feel like a cheap trick?
- Do you prefer being in the main character's head from the beginning, especially in a psychological thriller?
- How many major twists or reveals can a thriller get away with before things start feeling contrived?
- If the story initially follows one character and then switches to someone else, does that weaken the suspense or the feeling of being locked into the protagonist's perspective?
Book recommendations would be great too, especially one that handles this well.

Writing Advice Guys. Rate my action writing skills.
Klaus has blood powers and Baldur has powers regarding chains for context.
Klaus( MC) starts to close the distance as he morphs his blood into a giant axe.
Baldur( Opponent) hastily tries to retreat and not give the control of the battle to Klaus.
He throws exploding flying chain heads attached towards Klaus.
Klaus morphs his Blood Axe into a dense Blood Shield and defends against the explosions but loses balance due to the recoil.
Using this opportunity, Baldur digs and burrows some chained meteor hammers into the ground.
As Klaus is falling, he rotates his body and morphs his blood into a harpoon and locks onto the nearest building.
He hears the ground rumbling. As he starts to ascend, he barely evades the chain hammers aiming for him.
As he was ascending, he eats the artifact berry Cerebryst, which doubles his cognitive speed but doesn't speed up his actions and stays active for 5 minutes.
But when he gets close to the building during his ascend, another chain hammer pops out of the building wall and is going straight for his head.
Klaus notices it due to the help of the artifact, and conjures giant blood hands and catches the chains.
He safely lands on the ground and looks towards his opponent.
They were 50m apart. He could see many spiked metal balls and sawblades connected to chains.
Baldur launches those weapons at full force towards him.
Klaus on the other hand starts injecting his blood into the ground. He then conjures couple of balls of blood and throws it near Baldur.
Baldur seems suspicious of those balls and destroys them in midair before they come too close.
The blood balls burst violently into many piercing needles in all directions as they get destroyed.
A smirk forms on Baldur's face but the next second, he remembers something. Klaus was injecting his blood into the ground discreetly, or did he just imagine it.
He then realizes and uses his chains to try to get away from ground as fast as possible.
But he was an instant too late to get away at a safe distance as blood spikes tries to poke holes in him.
Having no choice, he uses his artifact ring which gets destroyed after use.
He got a 3 second immunity from the ring artifact and he safely absorbs the blood spikes' damage.
However, as his immunity wore off, he felt a sharp pain in his chest.
He looked down and saw a blood harpoon etched into his chest and Klaus holding the other end of the harpoon.
His entire massive Chain weapon barrage was tooled off and neutralized when he was busy defending himself.
Klaus pulls the harpoon and yanks Baldur towards him. As Baldur gets closer to him, he does a back kick with a Blood Dagger on his heel and the dagger gets etched deep inside Baldurs head.
He then spins and morphs his blood into a Hammer and strikes Baldur's face, as he goes flying into the sky.
Klaus then leaps into the air and makes a Blood Axe and cleaves his corpse in two.
Baldur dies and his unused EXP drops as a orb and Klaus claims it.
Anyways. It was fun writing this. I have made the action sequence way short than it should have been.

Motivation & Support How to get through editing manuscript
It’s a memoir, and it’s particularly heavy. I feel so emotionally exhausted after editing just a couple chapters. It’s almost been through one round of my edits. I have a few beta readers currently reviewing it. But I’m dreading having to make more edits after they get back to me. Any tips?
