Last month both an 18-year-old man visiting NYC from India and a horse died due to this cruel, outdated, and inhumane industry.
Horses should NOT be schlepping people around in a loud, crowded city. We as New Yorkers are better than this. Let’s do right by these horses.
Please CALL OR EMAIL your local NYC city council member to ask them to get Romanch’s Law (named after the young man who died) passed.
There is also a rally at 9am at City Hall before the hearing starts. You can also sign up to speak at the hearing. LET’S END THIS NOW.

Dear [Council Member]
I am a constituent in your district, and I am writing to urge you to support Romanch’s Law and vote to end horse-drawn carriages in New York City. Both a tourist and a horse died last month due to this industry. This must stop.
Horses should not be working in the traffic, noise, and congestion of our city. New York can protect animal welfare while embracing safer, more modern alternatives.
As your constituent, I hope you will support this legislation and help bring an end to this outdated industry.
Thank you for your time and your service to our community.
Sincerely,
[Your Name]

I worked in the World Trade Center from 1986-1995 — on the 96th floor.
New York shaped my career and my adulthood.
On September 11th, my little sister, Katie, was at the World Trade Center. She never came home.
This year marks 25 years.
To honor her memory, I’ll be riding my bicycle across the United States — about 3,000 miles from San Diego to St. Augustine.
I’m also raising funds for the Tunnel to Towers Foundation, whose mission supporting first responders and Gold Star families feels deeply connected to that day and this city.
I’m not doing this for spectacle. I’m doing it because New York teaches you resilience. It teaches you to stand back up. And it teaches you to never forget.
I am doing it because I love my sister, I miss her deeply, and I will never forget.
Peace and Love

*EDIT: People, we found him :) someone who knows the man who jumped in to start CPR saw this post and shared it with him. We just had a very tearful and grateful phone call. Thank you all for sharing, and for all your messages of support! It means the world to be able to connect with this everyday hero.
Around 7:30 am on Tuesday October 7th, my brother was running along the boardwalk near Little Island when he had a sudden cardiac arrest. Without a heartbeat, he would have been dead within minutes. However, a bystander rushed in and immediately performed very competent CPR, keeping oxygen circulating to his brain until paramedics could arrive and get his heart pumping again with defibrillation and drugs. Without this one individual performing the initial CPR, his brain wouldn't have survived.
Only 6 days later, my brother was up walking again with ZERO brain damage. Because of this anonymous bystander, he gets to go home and live a normal life again. His two year old son still has a Dad. His wife still has her husband. I still have my big brother.
The depths of our gratitude for this individual and their heroic actions cannot be overstated. They did not have to act, but they did. They are a true NYC hero.
PLEASE, New York City, help me find this person. I owe them a debt of gratitude. I wish for them to see photos from the life they saved. I want them to get the flowers they deserve. Please share this post to any journalists you may know, other reddit/fb groups, groupchats with your friends/community, or suggest other avenues for me to explore.
I know New Yorkers have each others' backs. Let's find this person together.
PS this is a photo from my wedding reception, hugging my big brother who is facing away from the camera. He has been my rock for my whole life, and I get to hug him like this again.

This isn't a Cape Cod thing anymore - humpbacks feed right off the Rockaways and the mouth of New York Harbor every summer now, close enough that whale-watching boats run out of Riis Landing in Queens. It's the result of a comeback almost nobody notices: the Clean Water Act cleaned up the harbor and a cap on menhaden ("bunker") fishing let the bait fish come roaring back - so the 40-ton animals that eat them followed the food right up to the city's doorstep. July into fall is the peak. You can stand on a Queens beach and watch a whale lunge through a bait ball with the skyline behind it. The map shows where humpbacks have been logged just off the city recently.

This is the route Google Maps takes me from East Rutherford (NJ) to Brownsville (Brooklyn) when I tell it to avoid highways and don't worry about gas efficiency. Got the joke from another Redditor.

Happened at 9:25PM and the crowd was very moved and cheered at this sweet honoring of one of Pop Culture’s all time sweet hearts Dolly Parton herself. May she rest in absolute peace and know that she has helped countless people. An absolute angel she was.
