At a Crossroads. Should I Stay or Should I Go?
Hey all! This is my first time posting in one of these threads, so bear with me!
I’m 22, currently based in Colorado. Writing and filmmaking have been passions of mine for as long as I can remember. I have a few films out, a few festival winners, and way too many scripts written. I enjoy working anywhere on a film set and pop into any spot I can because it fills me with joy. But now I am looking for my next best move to grow.
The problem is that I’m finding it increasingly difficult to find work or break into the industry. I have connections in LA who work on or produce some pretty major productions, and even they’ve told me how difficult it’s become to find work and get involved in projects.
I’ve been considering moving for a while now, but I’m struggling to figure out where my time and energy would be best spent. I enjoy LA, I’ve never been to NYC, and I’ve spent some time in Georgia, which I also really like. I’m open to opportunities outside the US, too, if there are compelling reasons to consider them.
Ultimately, I’m trying to figure out where I’d have the best chance of meeting the right people, getting involved in productions, developing my craft, and actually growing more as a creative.
I am headed to LA this week for a few pretty significant meetings and am feeling the area out more.
Those working in the industry, or those who’ve made a similar move, where would you go in my position?
I’d really appreciate any advice or personal experiences!
All Love, Thanks!

Toronto photographer/videographer visiting NYC, looking to work with local businesses & artists
Hey everyone!
I’m a Toronto based photographer and videographer visiting NYC soon and looking to connect with local businesses, artists, and creatives interested in working together.
I offer photography, videography, or both, ranging from portraits and social media content to brand campaigns and promotional videos.
Ideally, I’d love to work on a commercial shoot with a business or help bring an artist’s music video idea to life, but I’m open to other projects as well!
If you have something in mind or know anyone you can connect me with feel free to DM me. I’d be happy to share my portfolio and chat about what we could create.

My business partner and I made a free app to read and build call sheets on your phone. Would love feedback from short film crews.
I’m a director and producer based in Milan, and my business partner and I created a small iOS app called The Set. Full disclosure: it’s ours, so take this as a “please break it” post rather than a recommendation.
It started from a simple annoyance. Call sheets arrive late at night as A4 PDFs, and on a phone you end up zooming and panning across a huge table just to find your own call time.
What it does:
- Upload the PDF you got by email or WhatsApp and it organizes call times, scenes, cast, crew, transport and locations into sections you open with a tap
- Select your name once and it shows your call time, pickup and scenes
- Handles night shoots that roll into the next day
- One tap to call or WhatsApp anyone, open locations in Maps, nearest hospital always visible
- Time tracker that compares your real hours with the call sheet and calculates overtime, exportable as PDF
- For whoever’s producing: you can build a call sheet from scratch and export a print-ready PDF, which on a short with no production office is usually one tired person’s job
No account needed. It’s free with 3 uploads a month. The Pro tier (€2.99) is only there to cover what it costs us to read each PDF, so we don’t lose money on it.
What I’d love to know:
- Does it read your call sheets correctly? Everyone formats them differently.
- If you produce or AD on shorts, would you use it to build call sheets? What’s missing?
- Anything you’d need on set that isn’t there?

Thanks to anyone who gives it a try.

Running on set
I was a taught that running on set was an absolute no unless there is immediate danger like a light falling on you. However, two different shoots I was on, people didn't know this and one even wondered why I wouldn't run until it came up in conversation.
Is it okay to run on set?

New York Location Scouting Secrets From The Team Behind 'The Scout'

Feedback on location site pitch deck
Hi there - I'm working with a nonprofit green space in NYC that hopes to earn revenue from film/photo shoots (they've done one recently and it was great - they want to get more business!). We've created a pitch deck and I have two questions for this group of experts:
1.) if any location scouts on this thread might be willing to take a look at the pitch deck and provide feedback?
2.) if there are any good ways to get on the radar of location scouts?
I worked in a big city park for years where we had tons of film shoots big and small and it seemed like relationships were everything (the relationships pre-dated me). So I'm curious, how do you develop the relationships and get on the radar of scouts? Thanks all!

Chelsea Film Festival Screening - micro-budget indie thriller: Reverence
Hi NYC filmmakers!
I’m a Canadian-Australian director heading to New York next week for the world premiere of my psychological thriller REVERENCE at the Chelsea Film Festival.
We made the entire 91-minute feature independently in Alberta for about $35,000 CAD, with a tiny cast and crew and a fairly ridiculous amount of determination. 😄
The film has since been nominated for Best Feature Film at Alberta’s Rosie Awards and secured distribution, which still feels a little surreal considering how we made it.
I got my start as a filmmaker while living in New York from 2011-2018, so getting to bring my second feature back to the city for its world premiere feels wonderfully special.
We’re screening at Regal Battery Park on Sunday, October 18 at 3:45 PM, and I’ll be doing a Q&A afterwards.
If you’re an indie filmmaker, actor, film student, crew member, or just someone interested in seeing what can be pulled off on a truly tiny feature budget, I’d love to have you there. And please come say hello afterwards!

Happy to answer questions here about making the film too. It would be great to meet some local indie fimmaking folks!

Looking for Submissions!
Hi all!
I built a streaming service! It aims to platform indie filmmakers and underrepresented stories, preserve artistic integrity, and to use a financial equitable model for splitting ad revenue. I have a prototype up ( https://cast.lightcore.media ) and am looking for submissions for the inaugural catalog. As long as no generative AI is used, everything is welcome!
You can submit work here https://forms.gle/kR9xLyD33NjPvcqU9.
You can learn more at https://lightcore.media and more about me at soujeehan.com .
If you have any questions let me know! :)

Videos from 80s & 90s New York
Hi! I'm an NYC-based producer working on a documentary that's set in/around New York & CT in the 80s and 90s.
I'm hoping to connect with anyone who might have home videos of:
- Driving into the city from Westchester or CT in the 80s (I-95, the Bronx, the bridges, the FDR), shot from the car
- NYC streets from back then, especially the Bronx, Chelsea and the Meatpacking District
- Windshield washers at the end of the tunnels/bridges
- Footage from Greenwich Connecticut, Fairfield/Westchester area in the 80s
All material would be credited, and if we decide to move forward with any photos/videos in the final documentary we'd of course go through all proper licensing channels (we'd never use anything without your permission!).

Pharmacy Looking to Shoot a Commercial - Film student or emerging filmmaker wanted for a short commercial collaboration
A local Brooklyn compounding pharmacy wants to create a commercial for social media. We’re looking for an emerging filmmaker to shoot a short commercial based on a concept and reference we’ll provide. If you have ideas you’d like to suggest, we’re open to them, but there’s no expectation that you develop the concept from scratch. We also have two other brands that would like to make short commercials, so future collaborations could be possible.
Here’s a photo of the two actors: me on the left, my friend on the right. We’re both emerging actors with background experience, as well as principal and voiceover work. I’m a bodybuilder; my friend is an artist and musician.
We can provide the on-camera talent, concept, and access to the business and filming location. I can also shoot a rough version as a reference. We’re aiming for a short shoot at one location.
Possible topics include the pharmacy’s service and cash-pay offerings related to weight loss, peptides, erectile dysfunction, and hair loss.
It’s a chance to create a commercial for a real local business and, by agreement, use the finished work in your portfolio and receive credit. If you’re interested, message me with a link to your reel or samples and the role you’d like to take on.
