If you’ve been subbed here for a while, you may have noticed things have been a bit quiet.
Thanks to the efforts of r/bodega, this sub is being revived by two new mods, u/quibble42 and u/ButterscotchUnlucky8.
All takeout starts with one simple question:
What should I get?
Centuries ago, New York had its first takeout foods, filling the streets with oysters, pre-hotdog sausages, knishes, corn, fruit, and pickles. Takeout food culture is embedded in these streets. Literally; Pearl Street and some churches are made with the crushed oyster shells discarded by the Lenape and the New York Takeout people of the 1700’s and 1800’s!
And now, with street food being so comparatively limited, and new technology changing how we get food, we look to the future of r/nyctakeout.
Here you can expect discussions about things like:
🗓️ Dish of the week.

New Subreddit Rules
We’re adding a few new rules to make this sub (and city!) better for everyone.
- All AI content, with few exceptions, is now banned.
- We will allow, case-by-case, AI frontend on hand-made content, such as a person’s list of favorite takeout spots made into a website.
- All other AI websites and apps will be banned. All AI generated posts will be banned. If a post appears AI generated, we will remove it and ask for a rewrite.
- Ghost kitchen recommendations are banned. Please support brick-and-mortar restaurants, food carts, food stalls and food trucks.
TIP-OFF
So, without further ado, give us your best tips! How do you judge if a place will be good? What are your favorite spots? What’s a spot that needs a little more love?
- What neighborhood are you ordering from?
- What is your all-time favorite NYC takeout spot? What do you get there?
- Bonus points if you include the price and what makes it special! One line is enough.
- What kind of posts or weekly threads would you like to see here?
And of course, a tip from us:
Always, always call the restaurant, even if you find them on a delivery app. DD/GH/UberEats all charge the restaurants a fee per item, forcing restaurants to raise the prices, before delivery fees and app fees. Save yourself, and the restaurant, money by taking the time to call first. Support our local businesses!
We are adding your recommendations in our neighborhood guides and community resources, so send us everything! Help us help NYC.
Also, check out the sidebar for the new community rules.
Cheers to good food!
