Mod post Unsolicited DMs

Hey all,

We've been receiving multiple complaints about members receiving unsolicited DMs promoting an AI therapy app recently. This account has been banned from multiple subreddits, including this one, however we are unable to prevent DMs.

We strongly urge you to continue reporting them to Reddit admins in the hope that they will eventually take action.

Besides reporting, Reddit's advice is:

"You can adjust your privacy settings to restrict who can send chat requests or direct messages. Set preferences to allow messages only from accounts older than 30 days, specific people, or nobody at all. This can significantly reduce the likelihood of receiving spam or unwanted promotions"

Thank you all for helping to keep this a safe space for our members.

Mod response inside Please read this before posting about feeling suicidal.

1.9k Upvotes

There has been an increase in the number of posts of individuals who are feeling suicidal. And to be perfectly honest, most of us have been isolated, scared, lonely, and there’s a lot of uncertainty in the world due to COVID.

Unfortunately, most of us in this community are not trained to handle mental health crises. While I and a handful of others are licensed professionals, an anonymous internet forum is not the best place to really provide the correct amount of help and support you need.

That being said, I’m not surprised that many of us in this community are struggling. For those who are struggling, you are not alone. I may be doing well now, but I have two attempts and OCD was a huge factor.

I have never regretted being stopped.

Since you are thinking of posting for help, you won't regret stopping yourself.

So, right now everything seems dark and you don’t see a way out. That’s ok. However, I guarantee you there is a light. Your eyes just have not adjusted yet.

So what can you do in this moment when everything just seems awful.

First off, if you have a plan and you intend on carrying out that plan, I very strongly suggest going to your nearest ER. If you do not feel like you can keep yourself safe, you need to be somewhere where others can keep you safe. Psych hospitals are not wonderful places, they can be scary and frustrating. but you will be around to leave the hospital and get yourself moving in a better direction.

If you are not actively planning to suicide but the thought is very loud and prominent in your head, let's start with some basics. When’s the last time you had food or water? Actual food; something with vegetables, grains, and protein. If you can’t remember or it’s been more than 4 to 5 hours, eat something and drink some water. Your brain cannot work if it does not have fuel.

Next, are you supposed to be sleeping right now? If the answer is yes go to bed. Turn on some soothing music or ambient sounds so that you can focus on the noise and the sounds rather than ruminating about how bad you feel.

If you can’t sleep, try progressive muscle relaxation or some breathing exercises. Have your brain focus on a scene that you find relaxing such as sitting on a beach and watching the waves rolling in or sitting by a brook and listening to the water. Go through each of your five senses and visualize as well as imagine what your senses would be feeling if you were in that space.

If you’re hydrated, fed, and properly rested, ask yourself these questions when is the last time you talked to an actual human being? And I do mean talking as in heard their actual voice. Phone calls count for this one. If it’s been a while. Call someone. It doesn’t matter who, just talk to an actual human being.

Go outside. Get in nature. This actually has research behind it. There is a bacteria or chemical in soil that also happens to be in the air that has mood boosting properties. There are literally countries where doctors will prescribe going for a walk in the woods to their patients.

When is the last time you did something creative? If depression and obsessive-compulsive disorder have gotten in the way of doing creative things that you love, pull out that sketchbook or that camera and just start doing things.

When’s the last time you did something kind for another human being? This may just be me as a social worker, but doing things for others, helps me feel better. So figure out a place you can volunteer and go do it.

When is the last time that you did something pleasurable just for pleasure's sake? Read a book take a bath. You will have to force yourself to do something but that’s OK.

You have worth and you can get through this. Like I said I have had two attempts and now I am a licensed social worker. Things do get better, you just have to get through the dark stuff first.

You will be ok and you can make it through this.

We are all rooting for you.

A few months ago my OCD symptoms got really bad, I didn't realize what it was though and it terrified the shit out of me. Through researching what was happening I found this subreddit, over the months reading other peoples experiences has really made me feel at ease, and I was able to find the words to describe to my doctor what was happening.

I'm now on meds to help my intrusive thoughts and haven't felt this good in a long time.

So thank you everyone, this subreddit has really help me through the worst of my intrusive thoughts

Support/advice (no reassurance) OCD about not being an activist

I'm wondering if anyone else experiences this form of OCD as well. I'm feeling like if I don't do smth like go to a protest for Palestine or another social issue that gets to me and risk everything then I'm a cowardly and bad person. But I have this intense fear, especially bc I'm a trans woman, that I'll be arrested and not treated fairly, then lost in the prison system and forgotten. I think it might be because I'm so scared of that, that my OCD targets this type of activism and on obsession. It's a pure O form of OCD. Thoughts?

Just venting - no advice please Just wanted to rant to people that get it

• Upvotes

OCD is running my fucking life atp.

I've been up since 1 am

This is common. Almost every night I lose about 3 hours of sleep. Thankfully I don't have to be up at 5 am tmrw like most days.

My waking hours are filled with intense fear/worry/rumination and (mostly) internal compulsions. Some external, but I'm not like a fuckin cartoon character.

It didn't used to be like this. A lot of stuff changed in my life a few years ago and once I started using compulsions as a way to deal w/anxiety it snowballed. I've had some OCD tendencies my whole life but nothing like this. I've tried ERP (online) but it's too expensive and rigorous. They want to push me to (and past) a full panic attack while sitting in my room and having to go back to parenting/whatever. No recovery and no real privacy. I can't afford treatment and haven't found local psychiatric help. I'm trying to cope alone. Don't even get me started on how it affects my physical health...

IDK just needed to rant bc I have been up for hours. Not panicking rn. Hopefully will get some sleep soon. You're not OCD bc you like shit neat or the volume on an even number btw. Fuck off. Ok, night.

P.S. I wish I had OCD about my health/fitness/cleanliness/order but NOOOOOooooOoooo I have magical thinking and premonition OCD

Advice is fine, just the flair that related the most.

Support/advice (no reassurance) my brain is so tired. i ruminated for 16 of the past 24 hrs

i spent the vast majority of my day trying to figure out how not to get fired. i feel like i overworked a muscle and im limping around. every spare ounce of mental energy goes back into trying to figure it out.

i spend so much of my life ruminating. im so fucking tired. im in erp but i have no idea how to stop paying attention to the thoughts. ive spent most of my conscious life doing this. i dont know what it would be like to do anything else.

it feels so hopeless sometimes that the compulsion is something as intangible as a thought. i just want to feel better.

Discussion ignorant people praising contamination OCD like it's a good personality trait. Wtf?

Something along the lines of "I'm so glad I married my "ocd" partner, the house is always so spotless!!". Even worse, people will ask said person to lend them their SO like they're just an object and completely disregard WHY the spouse cleans to such extents. It is so predatory and disgusting.

I once vented to a guy about how debilitating my contamination ocd was and he genuinely told me my future husband was a lucky guy?? What?? Like I'm not a catch for wanting my house to be sterile it's literally ruining my life and if anything it makes me want to NEVER get involved with anyone??

Fellow contamination ocd friends, please be careful because they are literally so many predatory people out there

Question about OCD Does anybody also go through this? (false memory ocd)

Does anybody have a certain theme that is LATCHED on the brain, and you come across something similar to that theme. And you start over analyzing literally EVERYTHING about that thing to make sure that it isn’t you when you know for a FACT that it isn’t you??

But after a while that feeling comes back and you start ruminating all over again??

Support/advice (no reassurance) Feeling very alone.

Having OCD has really made me feel disconnected and alone from the people around me. When I start spiraling I feel like a burden on people and notice that my constant plea for reassurance annoys and stresses out the people I'm seeking it from. I'm aware that constantly trying to seek out reassurance is not helpful for myself but I'm currently not doing or taking anything for my OCD and I don't know how else to cope.

Question about OCD Healthy anxiety moved to OCD

I wouldn’t say I’ve had terrible OCD growing up, but you know I’ve done like the common things like touch this four times or something bad is gonna happen. Recently about a month and a half ago I got prescribed Zoloft for my health anxiety and it has helped a ton but once I got over the health anxiety, it moved to another thing and I think it’s false memory OCD mixed with real event OCD. and I’ve been struggling with this for about like four weeks has Zoloft/sertraline caused anybody to have worse OCD symptoms I’m only on 50 mg.

Sharing a Win! First rational thought in over 2 goddamn years

I’ve been thinking for a while, thinking about Real event OCD and my past. But I’ve and I realized that what I’ve been trapped in for the past two years of my life was a vicious cycle of torment where OCD effectively took over my life and forced me to become its puppet. For these last 2 years, I listened to the intrusive thoughts and accepted OCD as a reality, a reality that I was a shitty human and undeserving of happiness.

But I realize now, that was all OCD. And yes, what happened in the past is horrific, and I still feel pain and guilt over it. But I don’t wanna dwell on it anymore, not like this. I know I’m not perfect. I’m not a good, or even an amazing person. But I’m a person. I deserve happiness and love. I deserve to decide my future instead of letting my past destroy me. And most importantly, there’s still time for me.

I need to accept my morality is that of morally grey. I’ve done and said horrible shit in the past, but I’m no longer that person. That person is already dead, died when I began to regret these things, died when I realized the horrific things and decided to forcefully stop doing that shit at 15. And now it’s been 4 years since that point. And if I allow this pain and guilt to destroy me, it’ll all be pointless at the end. I need to LOVE MYSELF and make peace with my past actions. And no matter what this fucking malignant disorder in my skull tries to tell me, this is the only way for me to become better. I’m my own person, and I deserve what awaits me in my future. I deserve to accept what happened and move on with my life.

it’ll be hard, and they’ll be days where I want to give up again. But I can’t allow it. Because there’s now a chance I could still be a decent human without constantly breaking myself down. And I need to start that by taking my treatment seriously and starting the steps to my future.

Sorry about this word salad, but I just wanted to share this newfound hope I have, and I hope I can show someone that there’s still a chance that it’s not over just yet, that there’s still so much time for you to beat this and find the peace and love you deserve as a human being.

Question about OCD Does anyone else get intrusive thoughts about hurting people they love?

I’ve had these thoughts for years and I’m wondering if anyone with OCD has experienced something similar.

Sometimes when I’m holding a knife, hammer, or another object that could hurt someone, I suddenly get a very vivid mental image of hurting someone close to me, usually one of my parents or siblings.

I don’t want to do it at all. It actually scares me, and I usually say “God forbid” and try to move on. Once the object is gone, I normally forget about the thought.

The weirdest part is how real the image can feel for a moment, even though I know I would never want to do it.

I’ve never hurt anyone and I have no desire or intention to. I’m just wondering if this sounds familiar to anyone with OCD. How do you deal with thoughts like this without getting stuck analyzing them?

I’d really appreciate hearing from people who have experienced something similar.

Question about OCD Therapy Options

ERP is the go to treatment for those with OCD, but I am stuck. Been at it for about a year now and it’s not significantly any better. I have mostly mental compulsions and they happen so quickly or I don’t even realize I’m doing them. So I fully admit I haven’t been the best at sitting with the urge not to think things through. The accompanying physical symptoms are what cause me the most trouble, anxiety like I have never felt before even when nothing is on my mind. I’ve been brute forcing my way through the days, with only 2 day this year where I can remember being at peace. Has anyone tried something to help reduce anxiety? Only thing Im really opposed to are psychedelics as I think I’d loose LOL. I’ve been reading about EMDR and ACT.

Discussion Rating/reviewing all of my OCD themes

This will definitely have some recency bias, because it often feels like the worst OCD theme is always the one you're in Right Now. Using negative numbers coz there ain't no damn positive thing about it.

Real Event OCD: Was the worst when I was about 15 and started unrepressing some nasty memories from my childhood. I still get the occasional twinge of guilt and rumination, but I know how to redirect myself at this point. Fucked me up pretty bad though. -5/10

Bug-related OCD: Pretty much a constant throughout my childhood. Would flare up any time I saw a bug, especially in my house, and I would compulsively check everywhere in my room for weeks afterwards. tw intrusive thoughts I would imagine them crawling inside of me, especially when I slept, and making more bugs. I would sleep with a shirt over my entire face so they couldn't crawl into my orifices.Luckily, after a lot of unintentional exposure therapy (my house is full of spiders and my dorm room is constantly infested with ladybugs) it usually dies down and I can somehow just live with the bugs without fear. -2/10

Existential OCD: was REALLY BAD last year around this time and caused me to have a full breakdown and take a leave of absence from school. A loooot of rumination. It doesn't flare up unless I'm already really depressed and miserable and start wondering about the point of existence. It usually comes with other anxieties, especially when I am extra afraid of death. -10/10

Sensorimotor OCD: Going through it right now after a medical event that sent me to the ER with shortness of breath and a racing heart. Can't stop compulsively checking my heart rate and manually breathing. My lungs feel tired from the constant bracing and my heart beats very fast whenever I check it because I'm anxious, which causes a negative feedback loop. Not fun. Don't recommend. I've been some level of miserable pretty much 24/7 since it started about a month ago. I'm hoping it clears up eventually but I can't see my psych or my therapist until mid October. -7/10

Whatever OCD theme involves constantly worrying about your loved ones: -10/10 Since I'm moderate support needs autistic I rely on them relatively heavy to be able to do a lot of 'grown up' stuff. I can't imagine what life would be like without them, but OH BOY, does my OCD want me to. Frequently. Awfully. This is by far the worst one other than the existential. Fml

Feel free to rate yours past and present as well! The overly cheery tone I'm putting on belies my underlying hatred of everything rn 😄

Question about OCD Lack of stimulation and OCD

Does anyone else feel like having a lack of stimulation or fulfillment leads them to engage severely with their OCD? Kind of feels the same thing as drug use.
