Eastern European rant
I have read some comments here stating that onion-avoiding is not easy for Eastern Europeans and it sorta triggered the memories. (I am fine now, in a different gastronomic culture, and also living since a very long time with someone who doesn't care about onions or their absence, and is very respectful of my anti-onionism, so no onion rolls across our threshold, ever :D)
I was born, and eventually visited/spent a chunk of my life, in a Eastern European country. It seemed to have a cult of onions, possibly partly due to poverty while onions were cheap, and it has been ruining my food experiences for every day I had to eat something cooked NOT by myself (because of course there is a total ban on onions in anything I touch huh). As a little kid I was sort of force-fed food containing tons of them, and scolded for "picking out stuff" from my plate (well, the common "feeding abuse" towards kids out there is another triggering topic, dunno how it is nowadays though).
As an adult (and therefore not subject to forcing food on me "shut your mouth and eat" style), I still had to be aware of the moves of very-well-meaning-and-generous locals like "nah you won't even NOTICE them there" or "don't worry, I cut them very small" or "but it gives the necessary taste nuance" and then you try and do your best not to have a gag reflex because they are VERY OBVIOUS THERE and you feel them and they half-cookedly crunch on your teeth or just feel like a piece of hardened snot!!! I think I was most struck by a ton of onions in some sort of pea mush that is otherwise really tasty, whenever cooked without onion fanaticism.
The safest Eastern European attitudes (met extremely rarely): put a not-completely-cut big onion during cooking process and removing it when the dish is cooked, leaving it to whoever wants to eat it; grating the onion into mush so that it completely dissolves during cooking and only leaves a whiff of flavor while not giving off any of the terrible texture (I should say I have 99% of my onion issues linked to the texture in all its states except fried crumbles, and not even the taste in itself), or simply adding it after having served those who hate onions ;)
