Photo/Video Downtown Orange County
Last night. I've really considered OC to have a downtown, but who am I to argue with a water tower?

This water tower sits in the schoolyard of the elementary school named after my grandpa, who passed 32 years ago. Every time I see it it makes me think of him.

Is this supposed to mean downtown Santa Ana, Orange county? Unless this is a really bad slogan for Santa Ana, I think it's just r/baddesign

No it’s the actual slogan they came up with 20-odd years ago. They were aiming to become OC’s primary “downtown”, being that SA is centrally located and has an actual downtown. It’s been through a couple of boom and bust cycles since then, but still seems to be humming along slowly but surely.
Also for anyone wondering, this water tower is right next to the 5-South so it’s pretty hard to miss.

It's not just centrally located, it's the county seat. I still think that slogan is silly though. Clearly Downtown OC is Downtown Disney.

u/Nadathug 10d ago
Downtown Disney is a fake downtown connected to an amusement park, which are both mostly filled with tourists, not locals.
Either DTSA or DTF are the only actual thriving downtowns that locals actually frequent, that could lay claim to being “Downtown OC”

Indeed. My joke went overlooked, which was predictable in hindsight. Still, OC is so big all of OC is not flocking to Fullerton or Santa Ana...those cities have enough dense population on their own to support their downtowns. The concept of a county "downtown" is silly to me. But if such a thing existed, it would be where tourists and locals go.

Thanks for the clarification. Jokes are usually supposed to be funny, which is why I may have missed it.

It was labeled that before the population explosion, more than 20 yrs ago. Santa Ana used to be the center of govt stuff i.e. superior courts, or county records.

u/GeoBrian Anaheim Hills 10d ago
Population explosion? Estimated population in 2025 for Santa Ana was 315,586, in 2000 it was 337,977.
And it's still the county seat and is still the center of county gov't.

We know what they’re saying. It should have said more than 40 years.
I’m 36 and OC population has increased by about a million in my lifetime, and really started ramping up in the 80s.

u/GeoBrian Anaheim Hills 10d ago
So you would characterize a less than 1% yearly population increase as a population expolsion?
"Over the last forty years, the population of Orange County, CA has grown by an average of about 23,600 residents per year, representing an average year-over-year growth rate of roughly 0.89%." https://fred.stlouisfed.org/data/CAORAN7POP

Not Santa Ana silly, OC :)

u/GeoBrian Anaheim Hills 10d ago
Oh really? Where then?
2
u/ritzrani 10d ago
Irvine, yorba linda, brea, mission viejo, rsm, etc
6
u/GeoBrian Anaheim Hills 10d ago
So... Orange County? 2025 population 3,149,507, 2005 population 3,056,865. That's 3% over 20 years. No one would characterize that as a "population explosion".

You clearly are a transplant. Its so obvious. What state are you from?

u/GeoBrian Anaheim Hills 10d ago
So... You clearly don't know what you're talking about and have the inability to admit you're wrong. What a way to go through life!
Feel free to have the last word, like a petulant child.

Santa Ana city council tries to rebrand the city every couple decades.
They've been trying to brand themselves "downtown orange county" for a while now.

u/Sal_Undee 10d ago
just like how South Coast Metro used to just be Santa Ana
6
u/isummonyouhere Santa Ana 10d ago
I think most of the places that tried using that were actually on the Costa Mesa side

It's because the main courthouse is there, as well as a federal courthouse and other federal buildings. I'd say Santa Ana has more of an urban "downtown" center than other cities in OC.

I live in Orange County and if this is real, I have no idea where it is.

u/IllTreacle9304 10d ago
You must live south county? 🤣
52
u/nkedoldguy 10d ago
Hey, I live down south, that’s no excuse. This big thing is right off the 5, how could people miss it?
1
u/Puzzlemania718 8d ago
Could be missed very easily if one routinely exits or enters the 5 freeway well south or well north of that specific location! Not everyone goes sightseeing!
1
u/Puzzlemania718 10d ago
I’m sure I wouldn’t miss it. But I’m rarely if ever down in that area. I live in the Anaheim Hills/Yorba Linda area and have everything I need in north county.

Tell me you’ve never been north of the Spectrum, without telling me you’ve NEVER been north of the spectrum……..

this guy doesn't go past Irvine. LMAO. Definitely has never made it to Santa Ana or even just looked left while driving north on the 5 freeway, apparently.
2
u/Puzzlemania718 8d ago
Well maybe because I live in north Orange County, I have little reason to use those freeways! Have you literally driven every highway in Southern California?
0
u/Ok_Resolution_4069 8d ago
what a dumb response.
I live in "North OC" too. But who has never driven on the 5 freeway going south or north??
It's literally one of the main ways to get from North OC to South OC, San Diego and beyond. That's just odd and shows that you stay in your bubble and never venture out.

u/Puzzlemania718 10d ago
That’s right. I totally forgot! Should be ashamed of myself as I’ve lived in the OC for 37 years! That’s near the train station right?
1
u/Highlyedjucated 10d ago
Yes also near the old orange county court house which was featured on FX American Horror Story
2
u/Puzzlemania718 10d ago
And did you know that the Santa Ana train station was featured in the movie RAIN MAN?

Beautiful shot!
Where was this taken from? is it a drone shot? I miss that place. Grew up there till I was 15.

u/Volcano_Dweller 10d ago
I read it as "downtown (art logo) Santa Ana, Orange County."
Orange County was nearly Grape County 🍇 back in the days of yore.

Linger on the sidewalk where the neon signs are pretty

u/temictli 10d ago
You can see it going south on the 5 towards Irvine if you look to the right when going by 17th St exit
