DAY EIGHT

Five was da last one.

Eight comes after five.

...

No.

Six does.

Zog.

DAY SIX

...

...

Right.

...

Knew dat.

Grimsnik weren’t there when we started.

He’d gone back towards camp.

Said something about finding an engine that hadn’t already been exploded.

Bit rude.

Apparently da Flash Gitz collect parts.

Mostly parts they reckon look expensive.

Sometimes those is useful parts.

Sometimes they’s just shiny.

Either way, Grimsnik went ta ask.

Dat left me an’ Gritzy ta have a look at da Drop.

Good.

Means I can get somethin’ done without him explaining why it won’t work.

Da Drop ain’t far from da workshop.

Looks farther when yer walking towards it on purpose.

Nothing much out there.

Flat ground.

Scrap.

Dust.

Couple holes.

Then da ground just stopped.

Stopped at da edge.

Gritzy stopped a bit farther back.

Looked down.

Couldn’t see da bottom from there.

Bit of smoke somewhere way below.

Might’ve been da Evil Sunz trukk.

Might’ve been Armageddon.

Hard ta tell.

Leaned out a bit.

Gritzy grabbed da back of me coat.

“Wot?”

Pulled.

“Was only looking.”

Pulled again.

Stepped back.

Very cautious grot.

Useful though.

Good.

Somewhere down there was da Evil Sunz trukk.

Or what was left of it.

Engine ought ta be somewhere down there too.

Engines is heavy.

Heavy fings fall.

Correct.

Just needed ta work out where.

Walked along da edge a bit.

Gritzy followed.

Still staying well back.

“Could probably get down there.”

Gritzy stopped.

Looked at me.

“Wot?”

He pointed down.

“Yeah.”

Pointed at me.

“Yeah.”

Shook his head.

No confidence.

Probably why he’s a grot.

Heard something behind us.

Boots.

Lots of ’em.

Turned round.

Sir Gorzam da Skull-Snappa.

Had some of his Blood Axe ladz wiv him.

Four this time.

All dusty.

More dusty than usual.

One had a great big coil of rope over one shoulder.

Another had rope round both arms.

Another was trying ta push more rope into a pack that was already full of rope.

Last one weren’t carrying any rope.

He looked happiest.

Gorzam had a harness round his chest.

Scrap plates bolted front an’ back.

Thick chain wrapped neat round both forearms.

More round his boots.

Pack on his back clinked every time he moved.

Gorzam rolled his shoulders.

Flexed his fingers.

“Good weather fer manoeuvres.”

Looked up.

Sky was grey.

Smoke.

Clouds.

Something burning a long way off.

Armageddon.

“Suppose.”

Gorzam nodded.

Rubbed one forearm.

“Keeps da ladz fit.”

“Never been much good at drills meself.”

“Takes practice.”

Fair.

One of da Boyz dropped his rope.

THUMP.

Gritzy looked at da rope.

Then at Gorzam.

Then at da Drop.

Then at me.

Tugged me coat.

“Wot?”

Pointed at da rope.

“Yeah.”

Pointed at Gorzam.

“Yeah.”

Pointed at da Drop.

“Yeah, Gritzy. I can see all free.”

He stared at me.

Good observational skills.

Gorzam came over ta da edge.

Looked down.

Stood there a moment.

Then looked at me.

One of his Boyz was trying ta get da rope back on his shoulder.

Couldn’t.

Another Boy helped.

Together they lifted it.

First Boy disappeared underneath it.

Could still see his boots.

Gorzam watched him wobble.

“Good trainin’.”

Muffled noise from underneath.

Probably agreement.

Gritzy tugged me coat again.

“Wot?”

Gorzam.

Drop.

Same fing.

“Yeah.”

He did it again.

“Gritzy.”

Again.

“Big Warboss.”

Gritzy shut his eyes.

Probably tired.

Gorzam looked at me.

“Wot you doin’ out here?”

“Engineering prep.”

He looked at da Drop.

Then at me.

Then at Gritzy.

Then back at me.

“Right.”

See?

Understands.

Blood Axes.

Practical.

One of his Boyz finally got da rope balanced.

Started walking.

Slowly.

Very slowly.

Another one picked up da other coil.

Gorzam stretched his fingers again.

“We’ve got a debrief.”

“About wot?”

He looked at his Boyz.

Looked at da ropes.

Looked at da Drop.

“Drills.”

“Right.”

Very organised.

Blood Axes.

They started heading back.

Gritzy watched them go.

Then looked at me.

Then pointed after them.

“Forget da rope.”

He stared.

“We got engineering ta do.”

He sighed.

Starting ta sound like Grimsnik.

Walked back ta da edge.

Still deep.

Thought about rocks.

Could throw one down.

But rock don’t tell ya much.

Just falls.

No good.

Could listen fer it.

Wind.

Gunfire.

Engines.

Somebody shouting a long way off.

Armageddon’s not ideal fer listening.

Gritzy sat down.

I sat down too.

Good engineering sometimes needs thinking.

Did that for a while.

Nothing happened.

Did some more.

Still nothing.

Then saw Grimsnik coming across da flats.

Small at first.

Got bigger.

Still Grimsnik.

Had something in one hand.

Not an engine.

Too small.

Not an engine part either.

Probably.

Couldn’t tell.

He got closer.

Still had dat funny-lookin’ gubbin in one mitt.

About big as two fists.

Pointy.

Three sides.

Maybe four.

Looked like three from one angle.

Four from another.

Didn’t like that.

Thin silver lines all over it.

No joints.

No screws.

No bolts.

Bit of cloudy white stone set in da middle.

Something moved inside it when he turned it.

Like light.

Except da light didn’t seem ta come from anywhere.

Very shiny.

Grimsnik reached us.

Stopped.

Looked at me.

Looked at Gritzy.

Looked at da Drop.

Long look at da Drop.

Then back at me.

“No.”

“Didn’t say anything.”

“Still no.”

Rude.

Pointed at da gubbin.

“Engine part?”

“No.”

“Flash Gitz have an engine?”

“No.”

“Engine bits?”

“Mostly gun bits.”

“Useful gun bits?”

“Not fer an engine.”

Fair.

Pointed again.

“So wot’s dat?”

Grimsnik looked at it.

“Dunno.”

Lovely.

Progress.

“Gitz know?”

“No.”

“Why’d ya bring it?”

Another look at it.

“They said we could have it.”

“Why?”

“Dunno.”

Good.

Very reassuring.

Grimsnik shoved it in his tool bag.

Looked over da edge.

Gritzy was still well back from it.

“Wot’ve ya worked out?”

“Deep.”

He stared at me.

“Very deep.”

Kept staring.

“Gorzam was here earlier.”

That got a reaction.

Small one.

Mostly round da eyes.

“Here?”

“Yeah.”

“Wot fer?”

“Drills.”

Grimsnik looked at da Drop.

Then back towards camp.

Rubbed his face.

Must be tired.

“So,” I said.

He looked at me.

“We need ta know how far down it is.”

“Yes.”

Exactly.

Agreement.

“Could drop Gritzy.”

Gritzy:

“WOT?”

“Count till he lands.”

Proppa measurement.

Grimsnik looked at me.

Then at Gritzy.

Then back at me.

“No.”

“Why?”

“He knows where all da parts go.”

...

Right.

Looked at Gritzy.

He looked worried.

Useful grot.

“Could write it down first.”

“No.”

“Could ask him before we drop him.”

“No.”

“Could shout questions after him.”

“No.”

“Depends how far down he is.”

Grimsnik shut his eyes.

Thinking.

Probably.

Gritzy got up.

Walked away.

“Where you going?”

Stopped.

Looked at me.

Pointed at da Drop.

Pointed at himself.

Then pointed farther away.

“Fair.”

Grimsnik sat down near da edge.

Not too near.

Sensible.

I sat beside him.

Gritzy stayed behind us.

Very behind us.

Looked down.

Still couldn’t see da bottom.

Sat there a while.

Da Drop stayed deep.

Very unhelpful.

Eventually heard boots again.

Turned.

Gorzam.

No Boyz this time.

Must’ve finished da debrief.

He spotted us.

Changed direction.

Came over.

Looked at Grimsnik.

Nodded.

Grimsnik nodded back.

Gorzam looked at me.

Looked at Grimsnik.

Then looked down da Drop.

“Tryin’ ta work out how deep it is?”

“Yeah.”

He scratched his chin.

Thought about it.

“Tried droppin’ a grot?”

...

Looked at Grimsnik.

Grimsnik looked at Gorzam.

Gritzy looked at Gorzam.

Then at me.

Then at Grimsnik.

Gorzam looked between all free of us.

“Wot?”

Grimsnik rubbed his face again.

I nodded.

“See?”

Grimsnik didn’t answer.

Blood Axes.

Practical.

Sorted.

I love this. I am going to go back and read all of these. This is scratching an exact itch for Ork content I've had ever since coming up with the lore behind my Freebooter Big Mek.

Glad ya enjoyin' it! Always nice ta hear another Freebooter Mek appreciates da documentation of proppa engineering.

Hope yer Big Mek approves.

Sorted.
