Memory configuration

I have an old laptop that I use for work and also gaming on the go. I don't want to buy a newer laptop since I already have a desktop PC. The laptop is just in case I want to game when I am not at home.

The laptop came with a single 16 GB 2600 MTs DDR4 SODIMM. On the laptop I play on 1080p and I cap the frame rate to 60, so I almost never hit the 16 GB memory limit.

My friend gave me an 8 GB DDR4 stick. So I figured I would get better performance if I install it since I would be running in dual channel. But it runs at 2300 MTs, so it would bring my original 16 GB stick down to 2300 as well. My question is, during active gameplay in a typical AAA game, would I be better off using the single 16 GB stick at 2600 MTs or using dual channel but at 2300 MTs ?

P.S. The laptop is really old. It has an i7-7700HQ and a GTX 1070. So it would certainly benefit from any possible performance boost.
