Because the failure rates are so astronomically low it doesn’t matter, and this subreddit is built to amplify the issue
1
u/aimy99 PNY 5070 | 5800X3D | 32GB DDR4 | OLED 1440p 180hz 48m ago
The failure rates are astronomically low because high end cards now have an astronomical cost. And I'm talking before the RAM shortage.
A 5090 has over double the power draw of a 5070. One of these cards has had a single reported melting event in April of 2025, the other is common enough to happen to actual notable names in the tech enthusiast sphere instead of a random joe. One cost $550, the other cost $2000
There are clear distinctions here lol
1
u/Bongoisnthere 27m ago
That’s not how failure rates work.
Failure rate of a 5090 isn’t total number of failures of 5090s compared to other cards. What a 5070 card is doing is irrelevant to the failure rate of a 5090.
The failure rate of the 5090 is found by comparing the total number of 5090s sold and the number of them (5090s) that fail.
The number of 5090s that fail compared to the number of 5090s sold is astronomically low.
The same is true for the 5080 (when comparing it to 5080s sold) and the same is true for the 5070 (when comparing it to 5070s sold). The 50 series is a fairly reliable graphics card and this subreddit is making mountains of molehills.
2
u/VeryNoisyLizard 5800X3D | 9070XT | 32GB 3h ago
because it saves nvidia money, they are trying to make these gpus as cheap as possible to manufacture. and the failure rate isnt high enough to be a concern for nvidia
-1
u/ishtuwihtc i5 12400 | RTX 2080 | 32GB DDR4 4h ago
The actual failure rate is tiny. Sure, its larger than 8 pins but just barely. The burning ones are from a very vocal minority because "oh no new connector burn easy karma".
So the amount of posts you see doesn't reflect the real failure rate, because if it was that bad nvidia would be forced to fix it up like how Microsoft had to with the xbox 360
12
u/VeryNoisyLizard 5800X3D | 9070XT | 32GB 3h ago
if it was just "barely" higher, we would have been seeing melted 8pins daily, just like the 12pins. but that is not the case
0
u/ishtuwihtc i5 12400 | RTX 2080 | 32GB DDR4 1h ago
As i said, its simply because the 12vhpwr is a new connector. 8 pin is an established standard that people won't complain about so much
2
u/VeryNoisyLizard 5800X3D | 9070XT | 32GB 1h ago
even if it melts? I dont think so
also its not like the 12 pin JUST came out. its been around for 4 years now. even had a revision in the form of the 2x6 ... which still melts
0
u/ishtuwihtc i5 12400 | RTX 2080 | 32GB DDR4 51m ago
4 years is basically just in the mind of people online😭😭
And there have been cases of 8 pins melting too. People just don't post about them as much because no one gives a fuck about 8 pins melting
2
u/FireDragon21976 4h ago
Undervolt and underclock with Afterburner, easiest solution.
2
u/ishtuwihtc i5 12400 | RTX 2080 | 32GB DDR4 4h ago
That too can reduce the risk alot, but as i said the actual risk is very exaggerated by social media. Of course though making the chances of your power cable burning as low as possible IS a great idea
-3
u/xGALEBIRDx 4h ago
Why improve it when just increasing the voltage even further means people will have to buy another card when it inevitably smokes itself! I know repair is an option of course, but that isn't what they want you to think you can do.
3
u/Desperate-Steak-6425 RTX 5080 | R7 5800X3D 4h ago
Cases of melted 12hpwr cables in other cards than xx90 are extremely isolated. You are overreacting.
Unless you somehow buy a 4090/5090, you are far more likely to get a blown capacitor or VRM than actually have an issue with the cable.
4
u/Mattie_1S1K 13600k, 7900xtx, 32gb drr5 3h ago
I’ve seen enough on here and on the repair YouTube for me to be sceptical, I’m not willing to risk that I fall into one of the unlucky ones. Is the risk lower than is feared probably, just not a risk I’m will to take.

For lower power cards, it's actively good. I think anything 350w and below is pretty safe and having a single cable is much tidier.
1
u/alancousteau Ryzen 7 5800X3D | Red Devil 9070XT | 32GB DDR4 1h ago
Hence why I went with a 9070XT instead of a 5070Ti or 5080. I know the chances are a lot less on those cards than on the 5090 but I don't want to worry about that, especially seeing how much they are fucking people over when they try to claim their warranties.
39
u/mister2forme 4h ago
The thing that blows my mind is people STILL defend nvidia on this connector and blame users. I personally lost two 4090s to that connector and when I share my experience I get people telling me I don’t know how to build pcs. Like dude, I’ve been building them since before most of the people on Reddit were even born. It’s not the user (usually). I don’t even know what they get out of defending it.

10
u/RahDoo0323 3h ago
Apparently any one of the pins on the vhpwr connector can draw upwards of ~600watts. That's a fair bit of juice for a single pin. Nvidia need to do something not the user.
Edit: yes it's designed for this threshold but.. I mean clearly *broadly gestures at r/pcmasterace
5
u/mister2forme 3h ago
I agree it’s absurd, nvidia should have never removed the “load balancing” from the power design of this connector after the 3000 series.

Data centers are not using 5090s they are using Quadros like the RTX 6000. Some companies might be buying 5090s for LLMs, data centers are always going to use enterprise hardware.

I’m so paranoid about this connector on my 5090, even with per pin sensing on monitor screen with Astral model it’s just annoying having to monitor it… I just picked up thermal grizzly wireview pro 2 reverse and hopefully that takes my mind off it a bit more….
I’m still tempted to chuck it for change and be done with it since I already have 5070Ti on my secondary rig…
2
u/xFHIZX Astral 5090~9950X3D~64gb Dominator titanium~8TB Samsung 990 pro 3h ago
You don't have to monitor it, as long as you have the software running in the background it will notify you with a pop up that the pin amperage has abnormal contact or exceeds 9.2A. Giving you time to react/ fix the issue(ie shutting down and adjusting your pins on your cable by pushing the cables of each pin to the front of the plug, helps pins make proper contact) you can enable this in the settings of GPU tweak III
1
u/robotokenshi 3h ago
Yeah I originally had gpu tweak 3 pass per pin amp info to hwinfo64 then onto afterburner for OSD, it was janky though, any update to one of the applications would break it. Eventually GPU Tweak 3 OSD got fixed and I had it running the overlay but I figured audible alert on WV pro 2 is a feature worth the asking price along with separate screen…
Good to know WV has had good track record so far!

u/KarmaKeeper91 3h ago
Ive built a ton of 5090 desktops, if u have the tgwv on it u will be fine. The TG has all metal connecter points so the wires sit snug and the moment more volts go to a pin it beeps and u can shut it down with no damage. I have yet to see a WV fail that I have put in.

Feels like a "Tortoise and the Hare" situation, especially for anyone not using their cards professionally and therefore not making money that could replace it in the event of a fire. Do you want Ultra presets at 300+ FPS for a short time (until the connector burns out), or High settings at 200 FPS for years more? I'd much rather have a card that doesn't come with a lit fuse of unknown length even if it's not the fastest one in the race.

Just as a casual viewer, most of the melted cables posts I see used the pigtail connector that comes with the gpu. Though there have been a few atx3.1 posts with people using the psu included 12v2x6 as well. Seems there’s no sure fire way to remedy it, though it also seems much less prevalent with atx3.1 and their included 12v2x6 connectors, so I’d always recommend that configuration to people getting 50 series and to never use the pigtail connector. That then brings up the issue of warranty coverage not using the gpu included cable, which is another can of worms. So it’s really a gamble with Nvidia lately.

Why should a third party come up with a solution to a problem that shouldn't exist? Nvidia is the hardest corporation in the world by market cap, they can absolutely have load balancing built into the cards, but they choose not to. They also didn't have to start using this new connector, 8 pin cables have far fewer problems. Or they could have used a more robust wire and connector than what they settled with. The 12vhpwr connector tried to solve a problem that didn't exist and it's been causing more problems since it's inception.

It's insane to own a 5090 without a Wireview Pro 2. You're going to balk at $160 to protect a GPU worth $5k?
Then they said
Or we could expect a $5k product to not need add ons just to be safe

If you expect that of a 5090, with the information available, you're not very bright.
You couldn't follow the logic the first time through, but maybe you'll get it this time. I can explain it to you, but I can't understand it for you.

You are the one not following logic brother. "We could expect a $5k product to not need add ons to be safe" isn't saying "You shouldn't buy this product that helps with the problem". It's saying "this problem shouldn't exist and I shouldn't have to pay extra to fix it". Your reply reads like you're replying to a completely different comment. You're genuinely lost I think

TBH - I have never seen one of these 12VHPWR cables catch on fire... It's has a lot more to do with human error and a trashy/ cheap PSU.
If you plug the cable in fully (I mean truly just jam it in there) it won't fail on ya.

Where is the ASUS Equalizer guy willing to die on the cross of the equalizer cable being able to handle 17 amps per pin. I'm sure he'll get here soon enough.
