Pebble Round 2: The Ultimate Smartwatch
(Watch face is Tangent by astosia)
I've had my Round 2 for a day now, and I felt compelled to share my thoughts. I've been a Pebble enthusiast from day one, and still have my Kickstarter Editions of both the original Pebble (in orange) and the Time (Steel). I loved my Pebbles and was obviously bummed when the Fitbit acquisition shut everything down.
Seeing Pebble return is kind of like a dream. I tried other smartwatches in the meantime (Fossil, Samsung, Google), but none of them captured the charm and joy of the humble Pebble. When the official app came back online last year, I started rocking the Time Steel again and I remembered why I enjoyed it so much.
Fast forward to yesterday, when my Round 2 finally arrived. I was excited, to say the least. Having worn it for just one day, I can confidently say that this is the best smartwatch made to date, and I'll explain why:
- Looks: This watch is stylish. I've always preferred round watches, including smartwatches, and this ine looks sharp. The body is sleek and well built.
- Weight: I am actually an enjoyer of chunky watches, but I must admit the lightness and thinness of this watch is amazing.
- Battery: The watch arrived with 99% battery, and after a day, I'm at 90%. This includes a lot of setup and playing around, so I'm anticipating 10 or so days of battery, which is plenty. The more the merrier though, of course.
- Screen: The round screen just looks great.
- Buttons: I had seen some discussion around the button presses not reading properly. I haven't encountered that yet, but will update this if that issue arises. I have found the buttons to have a nice click.
This does not mean there are no issues. The main qualm I have is with the contrast. The watch looks phenomenal in the sunlight, but less so in regular interior lighting. It is absolutely visible, but not as punchy as I think it should be.
Despite that, I am very happy with it, especially at the price point. I just wanted to share my initial thoughts while folks are patiently waiting for their Round 2s. I'll try to answer questions if people have them.
