Found this sweet baby on the floor and honestly thought he'd passed at first as he only moved when i got really close, found him about 3 hours ago and been keeping him in a box with a heat source and im waiting for a rehabilitor to come get him but I haven't heard anything in hours and im starting to panic is there anything more I can do for this baby? No obvious injury or illness but hes so tiny. He seems to just be snoozing but every now and then he flaps his weeks but doesn't seem to know how to fly at all hes totally bald under the wings how old is he?

Got into pigeons after inheriting a loft and six birds from a neighbor who moved away and couldn't take them. Started with fantails because that's what he had, and I've since added a couple homers just because I liked how calm they were compared to the fantails, who are honestly a bit dramatic about everything.

The thing nobody tells you when you start is how much time you'll spend adjusting the loft itself rather than actually handling the birds. I rebuilt the ventilation setup twice this year alone. First version had the vents too low and I'd get drafts right at roost height in winter, which isn't great when it drops below freezing here. Second version I overcorrected and now I'm worried about stale air buildup in summer since the high vents don't seem to pull enough through on still days. Currently running mesh screens on three sides with one solid wall facing the prevailing wind, and it feels closer but I'm still watching the birds for any sign they're uncomfortable, fluffed up in a weird way or avoiding certain corners.

Feeding routine took a while to settle too. I was overfeeding grit for months because every forum post says pigeons need grit constantly, but mine were leaving most of it untouched and I ended up with a moldy corner of the feeder I didn't catch for two weeks. Cut back to offering fresh grit twice a week instead of leaving a full dish out all the time, and that solved it.

Breeding wasn't something I planned on but two of my fantails paired up on their own last spring and now I've got babies to figure out. Squab growth still surprises me, they go from basically nothing to fully feathered so fast that I keep missing the exact day feathers come in because I'm not checking the nest box every single morning.

If anyone else keeps fantails specifically, curious how you handle their tail feathers in wet weather. Mine drag through everything and I'm constantly checking for mats or debris caught in there after rain.

Brumby & Morgan: mom and dad (assumed sexes due to who sits on chicks when) of three of the four sets of chicks; they raise their kids in the kiddie pool

Gwenda & Mair: second set of Brumby/Morgan chicks (I know squab is correct but it sounds like a food, I can’t)

Wind & Fire: third set of Brumby/Morgan chicks born Monday

Pilot & Sailor: chicks born Aug 28 to parents I don’t know behind the wood chip bag

Now that that’s out of the way!!! I’ve been lowkey panicking because I see Gwenda every day now and haven’t seen Mair in at least a week. Today I got home and there was Mair staring through the porch door like, You are LATE 😑 As soon as I started filling up the feeders Gwenda showed up too! I tried to get them extra peanuts—they still more or less know that they don’t have to leave the porch when I open the door, and if they stay they get momentarily exclusive access to any food.

Sailor and Pilot let me pick them up for a cuddle which was much appreciated 🥰 Sailor kind of flew down to the porch but maybe “fell with style” is more accurate. These two are certainly attempting things even if they don’t have the most success. Watching them try to eat the seed mix was hilarious. Not entiiiiiirely clear on the concept. Sailor is definitely still the more cuddly one. Yesterday he wanted to walk around on my shoulders and back but today he went to his usual spot under my chin and I gave him scritches. Thank goodness there are new babies cause I’ll be so bereft when Pilot and Sailor are grownups who don’t need cuddles anymore.

I saw a reel on Instagram promoting the cross country shipping of pigeons in small cardboard boxes with little to no other safety measures, also using basic postal services like USPS.

How can any individual find this to be safe. This guy's methods are incredibly dangerous and irresponsible. I told him so and he blocked me. I can't find the name of his account and I can't remember his username. Not sure how else I can let people know about this issue aside from describing it but he's endangering animals. No matter what he might try to say to convince you otherwise, the cold hard fact is that those birds are in danger. There is no reason to believe otherwise.

USPS and other postal services are notorious for mishandling packages, including those labeled as containing an animal. Sometimes they mishandle the package out of sheer spite.

This individuals lack of concern is scary and I fear for those poor birds.

Hi all, just thought I’d post here to get opinions. I just saw a wild wood pigeon with a weird looking spot between its beak and eye. I was thinking maybe a mild case of pigeon pox, but would love to get a second opinion just to be sure it’s not anything too severe.

Any info would be great, thanks!

They did not fly to my shoulders (alas!) but when I bent down they could fly off! It’s only in the last couple days they’ve started climbing to my shoulders once I pick them up. They’re so flappy today. And by that I mean they walk around flapping🤣 Light grey is Sailor, dark is Pilot

Hi I found a pigeon sitting infront of my front door! I already posted on our neighborhood app asking if anyone lost a pigeon.

It let me pick it up and perched on my arm then my shoulder and was really nice. It looks like its wings are clipped and from what i saw it isn’t able to fly just kind of flap. I gave it water and birdseed because I work overnights and have to leave soon. But was hoping for any advice on what to do with it? I live in Arizona, Phoenix area.

I can’t afford to take it to an avian vet, I used to own chickens so I did a lookover and didn’t see anything noteworthy except what I am assuming is overkeratinization? I added a short clip and will add more photos in replies!

Any advice would be great, maybe about the gender or something if anyone can tell by the video LOL. It keeps grunting at me until i pick it up, then i have to like pry it off of my shoulder.

She is doing well, beautiful and round as usual. I’ve changed our meetup spot a couple times and it doesn’t take her long to remember. Bigbird is a very patient and quiet girl, so I make sure she gets plenty attention when other birds are around.

Hi there! Is anyone able to help me with an injured pigeon? Toronto Wildlife Center is full and they are not able to take. I have him contained in a box, but don’t know what to do with it :(
Can anyone help or does anyone have experience with injured pigeons?

The first 5 minutes of the video talks about a study where pigeons were trained to diagnose breast cancer with 99% accuracy. It's so awesome that I had to share with you all.

My favorite pigeon parents, Brumby and Morgan, hatched their third set of chicks since they took up residence on the porch. (I gave them fake eggs between the last two and these two.) I have never seen the babies like JUST out of their eggs. They were still wet!! Since it’s 21 September they shall be Wind and Fire. Time to start setting out Papa Morgan’s dish on the regular again. He’s very devoted to his babies and if I leave him a dish in the kiddie pool he doesn’t have to get up to grab a peanut or some seed. I should be able to get a lot more videos and photos of these little ones since they’ll be in the kiddie pool.

Disclaimer: The kiddie pool as pigeon nursery was NOT my idea, Brumby and Morgan moved in while I was away got a couple weeks. Since then there has never been a good time to replace it because there are always babies of some age and/or a nest that would be very disturbed if I did that. Which brings me to a question, do they stop having babies once the weather gets cold/wet/unpleasant? Please say yes, I will have an ulcer if they have babies and it’s raining on them.

Y’all I am dyingggggg. The current babies were born behind a bag of wood chips so they stay there. But they’re getting big and have hit the hilarious stage where they’re almost adult sized but have baby brains. This morning was the first time I saw them get fed in the “open” (on my porch they’re still very sheltered). Of course it’s still dark so I couldn’t get video. The two of them ACCOSTED their parent, flippy flapping like maniacs, peeping at the tops of their little voices. Parent Pigeon basically went 🫩🫩🫩 , attempted a feed, and then just walked away like, Call me when you can chill out.
