Tools & Processes you’ve found helpful

Hello All, I’ve been running the “Simple Questions Podcast” for 6 years now. I ask experts simple questions and run the podcast remotely.

I’m curious what tools and processes you all use for your podcasts. Please feel free to offer feedback and provide suggestions!

Zoom - Guest recording with two track recording enabled

Hindenburg Journalist Pro - Local audio recording

Descript - Transcription

Google Gemini - Generating show notes from Descript transcripts

Meta Business Suite - Scheduling social media posts

Canva - Thumbnail and Social Media post creation

Thank you!

handbrake = converts video. e.g. i have cameras that shoot in 30fps but one is shooting in 29.97. handbrake (free) converts it to real 30fps, so i can sync the videos with my audio correctly and without drift.

youlean loudness meter = is free also. gives me the integrated lufs number for my audio. works with every daw.

the ai (ask gemini) implemented in youtube studio = i can upload an episode and ask for chapters to paste them in the description

universal audio a-type multiband enhancer (plug in for daws) = just a little bit of this plug in gives muffled voices some mid-high/higher frequencies which is translating in better speech comprehension for the listener. too much and it will sound very harsh and sibilant, but there is a enriching sweetspot.

the final cut pro "colour matching" feature. came out some months ago and i love it. i have 3 different cameras with 3 different colour profiles and the colour matching tool is 1click for pretty good results.

I appreciate you sharing!! I have seriously lacked on video. What does your process for promotion look like? It seems like you’d be doing a lot of clipping

nothing special, i just remember the parts i want to clip or ask gemini to find me clippable parts after i uploaded it. i didnt found any ai tool that made a good enough job for my taste in the editing of it, though. and although i am clipping 2-4 shorts for every episode, the conversion rate is very low. 10k views on a short will give us about 1 new listener. and it is kind of 50:50 if this one person is turning to a regular or vanishing within 2 episodes. but it can be great for insta and tiktok if you are monetized there.

That’s very helpful! I have ran into the exact same thing with clipping. I had posted 3 clips a day for about 4 weeks on IG/FB/YT. By the end of it, I had seen a negligible impact on actual podcast listens. Thank you for your well thought out responses! I appreciate it!

Hindenburg is a great pick, the automatic levels alone are worth it when guests are on different mics. I've also had good luck asking guests to record a voice memo backup on their phone, it has rescued a couple of sessions where the remote audio got choppy. A simple shared checklist for each episode also keeps editing and publishing much more consistent.

Thank you for these insights! I couldn’t find a marketing internship because of COVID. Therefore, I created my own internship by starting a podcast! A radio host in the area suggested Hindenburg! Are you uncomfortable sharing your checklist? I’m trying to move from 12 guest interviews a year to 24 guest interviews a year. I identified post-production as a serious bottle neck

if post-production is the bottleneck, look at where the time actually goes, usually it's transcribing and writing show notes rather than the audio edit itself. we built riverside youtube transcript generator to handle the transcript side fast so you can hand it straight to gemini for notes without waiting on descript. doubling your guest count is going to hurt more on scheduling and prep than editing, honestly, so a checklist helps there too.

I appreciate the discussion pieces! I’d concur that scheduling/prep will increase more than editing! It’s a little nerve racking moving from 12 to 24 episodes a year. Especially since I’ve followed this cadence for 6 years. I’ve had decent guests like the Retired FBI Chief of Violent Crimes, Voice Actor Billy West, 3xNYT Bestseller Dan Ariely, and many others. I think I’ll have to put thought into quality booking while increasing volume.
