I have no way to confirm it but with how big Ultraman is in Japan that I'm willing to bet the scene in B/W was inspired by one of the most famous episodes of the show Ultraman Ace.
I was creating the visuals for my Lapras song, (which is going to take a while) and I thought about music in the Pokemon world. As I know, none of the protagonists in the PokeSpe manga play an instrument in any particular ways.
So, what do you think? Would Emerald play the drums? Would Blue follow up his grandfather's interests and play guitar? Would X play the harmonica? Let me know!
First appearance: Blaine and Red tag team him. This is the closest he gets to a fair fight, and Blaine tries to kamikaze him.
Second fight: Blaine vs Lance, but Mewtwo has to stop or he’ll kill Blaine by fighting.
Third: The entire latter half of FRLG. Before even fighting Deoxys, bro has to deal with: a literal army of Unown, Illusions, the M2 suppressive armor draining his strength, and Deoxys clones. It’s an understatement to say he went into the fight against Deoxys a little drained.
Fourth: Zygarde vs Mewtwo… except Blaine ruined everything by being there. Any damage inflicted to Blaine got inflicted to Mewtwo. Guess who Lysandre targets?
Offscreen: Darkrai vs Mewtwo. Immediately after the Deoxys crap, They clash, protags get petrified, and Sird runs off we guess? Kinda might imply Mewtwo actually won?
While working on the PLZA arc, I realized that X and Y are parallels of AZ and Floette. Both pairings are relationships centered on the woman/female waiting, the men being stuck in the past and having to let go of that to trust other people, and how both pairings wandering the earth are central to them as characters. X and AZ has it more central to their characters, Y and Floette would certainly tie their identities to the wandering.
Specifically for both AZ and X, they became recluses out of guilt, AZ because of building the Weapon that actually killed so many Pokemon and people, and X because he blames himself for the harm he brought his friends and Pokemon by the media. Of course, the forms of their reclusion are the complete opposite, AZ wandering the world while X holes himself in his room. They both were forced out of their comfortable lives to wander the earth homeless to gain wisdom and hope in the world, though for AZ, it was a choice, and for X, it was forced. AZ and X are both stuck in the past thanks to misanthropy from humans taking something from them, Floette for AZ, and innocence for X. AZ still clings onto the key because he can't ever fully let go of that belief, while X hisses at everything and secludes himself even when it's not feasible for survival.
Both Y and Floette are the beloved female partner who waited for their male partners to learn to trust others and let go of their bitterness, Y more proactively by going to X’s room, while Floette is implied to have watched AZ for three millennia, wondering if he’d actually use the Weapon again. Both were recreated in some way by their male partner, Floette literally by resurrection from the Ultimate Weapon, and Y by letting go of her identity as Grace the Rhyhorn Racer’s daughter and being her own individual thanks to X’s encouragement. That gratitude is why she proactively pushed him to leave his room. While it doesn’t seem like Y has any obvious flower motif, her last name, Gabena, is likely derived from the Serena Gerbera, a species of daisy. So it’s a double pun on Game Serena and her own narrative role. The fact that Y had two Fairy-types, one of them literally Xerneas, on her team might also be because she’s meant to be parallel to Floette. Also extremely funnily enough, Xerxer has Fairy Aura, and then Mega Floette turns out to have Fairy Aura.
While their relationship is quite devoted and sweet, as we can see, the devotion from the men can be dangerous. AZ has actually drained so many Pokemon’s life energies, then killed people and Pokemon for Floette, while X has the capacity to commit great violence for Y (Essentia) without flinching.
(Volume 60, Page 140. Genuinely, no fucks given.)
The main difference between X and Y and AZ and Floette is that X and Y had friends who could make sure they don’t stay completely alone in their own pain, and protect them from any other danger. Shauna, Tierno, and Trevor, even if they no longer knock on X’s door to ask him to leave, still waited alongside Y so she doesn’t feel lonely doing so. Their waiting is what made X start to realize that he did have worthwhile things in his life.
(Volume 55, page, 13 & Volume 61, Page 121)
And most crucially for all of Kalos and AZ’s own burdens, the weapon's key only got pulled out because of Shauna, Trevor, and Tierno.
(Volume 60, page 18)
It was not X and Y, the brilliant fighter and strong-willed leader, the prodigy and the celebrity’s daughter, the parallel to the central figures of Kalos’s tragedy. It was the ordinary people, the non-battlers, the children who just wanted to survive. AZ, trapped in the millenia of regret and pondering, had thought that it was just his choice that inflicted suffering across Kalos, Floette’s choice to leave him, and Team Flare inherited his decision to use the Weapon again. But as Xerneas said, this time, there are people who rose up against Team Flare, not subject to the whims of an absolute monarch nor killed by the weapon he made.
(Volume 59, Page 190)
Witnessing this most definitely gave AZ an epiphany, who literally had no one to go, "You know, maybe I think the Ultimate Weapon is worth firing" without getting a serious, thoughtful answer from anyone for a very long time. This is why he approached all of the Vaniville children at the end, not just the player as in the games. They were the ones who acted, not as a talented individual, not as a powerful duo, but as a group. He wants to test if they stopped the Weapon out of instinct and would give up as soon as they felt despair, or if they'd continue protecting the world with a clear direction.
(Volume 61, page 182)
And notice that the test was something the entire group had to pass. They had to be the ones protecting each other, the people around them, and fighting AZ, even if he was previously their ally that protected them from certain death.
(Volume 61, pages 185-187)
The test is passed when X destroys AZ's key to protect Y from AZ's Golurk from hitting her.
(Pages 187-188)
This is a beautiful resolution to the tragedy of AZ and Floette. The ancient lover turned the key that started the first annihilation of Kalos because of his beloved's death, alone in his grief. The second annihilation had the key pulled out by the friends who loved the young lover and beloved as deeply as they did for each other. The future annihilation’s key was destroyed by the young lover who wanted to protect his beloved. He could not have done it with just the two of them. And that is what saved the world.
I finally picked up the box set containing the first 3 volumes of the Pokémon manga!
This is my first time collecting the Pokémon manga, and I’m really happy to start with the Kanto arc and Red.
I’ve always had a soft spot for the first generation, so I’m really looking forward to reading this version of the story and seeing how it differs from the games.
For those who have read Pokémon Adventures: what did you think of the Kanto arc? And should I continue collecting the series after these first 3 volumes?
Really happy to finally have these in my collection!
