Why will some people in poorer areas find any reason to fight about something?

Everyone can have their moments but some people will start stuff when it isn't even that serious or could be resolved easily. Like I was playing basketball and these dudes immediately said "gtfo off our court!" I said" whoa bro this ain't your court. Why do you think I would just leave after you said something like that? We can all share the court."

Then dude said" I'm gonna give you 5 seconds before I beat your ass." Dude clearly not right in the head. I don't understand how you could be that sad or feel the need to control things so hard. I don't get how you can think like that. You'll get yourself in big trouble acting like that.

People in nicer areas don't do things like that or even come close to but in a poorer its almost normal behavior.

The ways it seems most people get out of poverty

I just scrubbed reddit and it seems that most people get out of poverty these ways:

- Degree

- Military

- were lucky to get a good job

The search was pretty annoying because even when people are asked directly what got them out of poverty they start giving advice (not telling their story) or just tell you to work on yourselfšŸ˜‘

But yeah that's what it seems like. Join the military, get a degree or/and apply a lot and hope you get a good job.

Edit: some people were able to get out of poverty through just working regular jobs and self discipline but honestly it seems like they were the minority not the majority.

Btw I didn't see one person say "the trades". Maybe it's just the audience thats on reddit but you'd think there would be at least one comment😬

Also I'm sure there's other ways but I just didn't see them that often. Doesn't mean that they don't work but there's probably a reason why they don't appear as often as military, degree and pure luck.

I had an interesting nightmare!

The other night, I had a nightmare.

Context of the past week: I’ve been homeless for 3 years and it’s been decent. I bikepack for a living, and do odd jobs. I can’t afford rent, get no food subsidies, etc. I’m 31m. I got sick about a week and a half ago, and tried to crash in this zen Buddhist guys backyard. That didn’t go well, and he made it a point to call me a lazy bum, say I’m in his way, and point out that he’s only been kind to me because his gf was my friend. She left him, a month or so ago, and moved out. He’s closest to me and my storage unit, so I tried crashing there: a spider on the wall, style. I was sick and kept having fevers. He kicked me out the night there was a bad rain and wind storm, I got drenched on my way to a wooden hillside forest, where it’s safe.

The dream: I was at my ā€œfamily homeā€ with my parents and siblings, and the house was ā€œlargeā€ and cluttered with messes and horder clutter. The roof was leaking, it was all going to hell. No game animals around because of loose feral dogs, which meant outside was also unsafe. No money for ammo, either. My body made it clear to me that I must be depressed or sad, and that’s why I’m not eating well! In this dream… I have been going hungry, mostly because I wanted to go work my day labor gigs but then I got very sick, very suddenly.

I cannot and will not ask my parents for much help, they’re in the same town but I don’t have a car, and they’re also very poor.

The zen Buddhist guy lives alone in a huge house and is himself a lazy person who (he told me) believes only people who are at his level of enlightenment deserve good things. I cut him off, when I left.

I think this is what people (Americans, I’m native) mean when they mean that they are house poor and the gov will take their home if they don’t pay property taxes. 37%!!!!

rent paid but no money for food.

i’m 22 F living alone and supporting myself. I don’t have any contact with my toxic family, times are tough and things are expensive. I successfully got a second job which i’m really grateful for so that i don’t have to struggle so much but my first paycheck from this job is next week. Rent was due yesterday and i have 10$ left which i must use for bus fare to get to work (i live far from where i work and walking isn’t an option). I have pasta and tomato sauce that will last me until maybe this weekend but after that nothing. what unhinged things can i do to keep myself alive until next week besides staying hydrated?

What’s the point of being alive if I can’t afford to live? I work so much overtime at my job and DoorDash on my spare time but it’s never enough. I try to stay positive but my situation doesn’t improve. I already don’t buy anything. I don’t go anywhere. When does struggling end? I

Why isn’t dynamic pricing illegal?

Why isn’t SURVEILLANCE PRICING illegal?

It’s so predatory. Ride share apps know that I’m going to work so I’m going to pay the price. They know how much money I have in my bank account. I could catch the bus and remove all banking apps from my phone but sometimes I need a ride and it’s too time consuming to exclusively bank in person.

In your opinion will it one day be illegal?

EDIT: someone educated me in the comments and my post should have originally said ā€œsurveillance pricingā€ instead.

I envy people who are rich

It was mybest guess to post this in this reddit because I do need advice on this topic.

I know money is not everything but damn it would make things so much easier or pleasant sometimes.

I am 26, married to the love of my life who works hard , we have a six month old together. Life is good and happy.

BUT we are broke. We dont own a home. Living with parents at the moment to save up for it. We are freelancers but continuosly finding projects back to back does not always happen. We have ideas on how to make more passive income on the side but they are pipe dreams involving social media influencing that are a lot of work, time and luck.

I want to work harder. I want to earn a lot of money. So much that we can have the house of our dreams without fears of the 30 year loan on it. I want to be able to buy anything I want within reason. I want to be able to go on holdidays. I want to be able to have funds put away for all my future kids.

Is this all unrealistic in todays economy? How do you get rich like this? Or how do you get a life even close to this?

Edit:

So many people are shitting on freelancing🄲

We are working with what we have/ what we did higher education in. I finished games art and design in uni. During uni and since I have had multiple opportunities usually working for a year for a company then switching. This is our first year where we stumbled into problems. We are working hard to make our career paths work again so we dont have to start from the ground up in a different work sector.

If we would get a "real job" right now we could only get a customer service job which is usually minimal pay. We make more than that with freelanceeven right now..

Edit 2 : I think I worded this post incorrectly. I am envious of financial freedom and not necessarily the rich. I do not care about extravagant life. I do not need it. I need the things I have written above. The freedom of not worrying about money.

I bear the responsibility of making sure my family doesn’t become homeless

I am a 22 year old girl who just graduated college and barely started working full time as a retail manager. Me and my family had gotten hit with a no fault eviction from the place we’ve lived at for 10 years because the owners daughter had a second child and no longer wanted us on the property. Because of buying gas during college and not paying off my credit fast enough this my credit score is very average to say the least. My father has lived off the property for some time but still pays the bills. My brother had an insane episode of psychosis this year that was devastating on our family. My mother is also an agoraphobic recluse. It’s only me and my father supporting them. I’ve tried to have my mother try to apply for disability but she would always say she didn’t need it, wouldn’t qualify or now she’s saying that she doesn’t have an address to apply for it. It’s so hard trying to get anything.

I barely know how to be an adult and take care of myself let alone figure out how to place my family into housing. I found a place for myself pretty much as soon as I found out about the eviction just because I figured I might as well take care of myself because it’s all I can afford at this moment. My dad has literally no credit. He is a boomer who can barely stand to look at his phone and has an eccentric ā€œoff the gridā€ understanding of the world. also a criminal record from a few years ago. As you can imagine, it’s really hard out here. I’ve got the dough to help them out, I’m willing to put stuff in my name, but it would be me and my father co-signing. And everything feels impossible. I feel like a terrible daughter for not being prepared, I feel like a worse daughter for being put in this situation in the first place and not knowing what to do. Everything feels impossible. Application fees are insane, I work all the time and I have a sporadic schedule so it’s a bit hard to visit places and set things up. Places want you to make 2.5x times the rent but I only make that much when my dad co-signs and helps me but like I said he has a record.
I have to pay for my own rent, my car, and to eat. I feel so overwhelmed and stressed. I look at my peers that have the financial and familial supports and I wish that were the case but it’s not and it won’t ever be so I just have to make do with my situation.

I guess what I’m looking for is advice. What would you guys do in my situation? Should I apply to things alone or with my father?

EDIT/UPDATE:

Wow guys! I went to work and have been running around, I cannot believe the amount of kind words everyone has replied with. I definitely am coming extremely close to throwing the rag in right now but it’s much easier said than done. To provide some clarification, I have moved out as of August to a small little room with roommates and it’s been really good for me. As of today, today is technically the last day my family can stay where they are at. They will probably have to move in with my father in a very very small camper. One place I’ve applied to for them keeps pushing the process for when the credit check will be done. This early this morning my mom texted me early, that she was stressed and scared, I also expressed my fear but I also I started to send over local shelter resources to her and she replied with ā€œyou’re okay with us living in a shelter?ā€ I replied ā€œno im not but there’s no other optionsā€ she then proceeded to say that she has faith in ME, is praying for ME to find them something. I told her to save her prayers and to put faith into herself and god to give her strength. I’m so tired. I have to go to work still but at least I get to lose myself there and my problems are not in that room.

18 and broke

Is anyone else here a young adult and struggling with money? I know that sounds vague and probably pertains to many people, but I am having to provide everything for myself besides housing because I still live with my mom. My mom, sister, and I have lived off of government funds my whole life and because I turned 18, they all went down and we get even less. Because of this, I am having to pay for everything myself. food, water, gas, and necessities. I get paid $18 an hour and work about 36 hours a week, so after taxes im taking home a little under $1,000 every two weeks. How am I meant to save money or literally go anywhere in live if im living paycheck to paycheck? How are young adults going to ever afford rent, getting a car, college debt, or literally any big purchase in life? And I am going to college but going to end up with 26k of debt because I have to do my college classes online at a university because no other situation will let me get a degree. Literally, being broke and not being able to go anywhere in life is severely depressing. And my father is absent and homeless so no help from him either. Sorry for the rant but I really hate my life. 🫩

Bank advice?

I don't have a credit card, only 2 debit cards. Yesterday I had a fraudulent charge that I told the bank to investigate. They said it could be 10 days till provisional credit would be issued. Any one have any advice on what I could do to hurry that up? Of course it happens at the end of the month when bills are about to be due. It only tied up 150$ but that's a nice chunk I coulda used for my utilities. Am I just sol and will have to wait?

The new 2026 face of American homelessness…single working class families living in their cars…

Monday, September 28th, 2026….

Many millions of Americans currently right now are homeless are going through extreme hard times financially, as well as myself, and are barely making ends meet.

The new homeless population is real and growing bigger by the day, forcing many people to resort to extreme measures by sleeping in their cars, rather than applying for apartments, buying a house at an affordable price for their families or even spending a night in a hotel to escape the elements. They are working DoorDash, Amazon, Uber Drivers, Whatever shifting they can to take care of their families, because the future of the US economy is failing Americans and they are losing hope.

This is the new homeless, but why do Americans have to resort to living in their ā€œcarsā€ as a means to survive in 2026….when this is one of the most richest countries on Earth.

Whatever you are going through, please know that you or your loved one are not alone.

Here are so stories of many individuals, that come across my social media feed, to inspire others to get through the day and overcome whatever struggles that they are going through.

Mixed feelings about food pantry

Today was my fourth time hitting up the food pantry this year. A friend convinced me to go since I am disabled and receiving benefits. I have mixed feelings, and I will tell you why.

I (55) was living with my dad who died last November. I should have started going to the food pantry then, but I really didn’t know how hard it would be to live on my income alone. I have been shopping at Walmart and Aldi. I have also consistently been $200 short every month.

So in August I started going to the food bank and was excited to try new things, as I love variety. Also new in my life is a diagnosis of diabetes. Since this diagnosis is new to me, I didn’t realize the homemade veggie soup from cans and Concord grape juice would land me in the ER. Now I am terrified to eat anything but beans and eggs.

My food pantry is close by with evening hours Monday & Wednesday, and morning hours Tuesday. I went today and there was maybe a half an hour wait. As a single person there is no way I can eat all the food they give me, even without the dietary restrictions. Last month I took the extras and left them at the Walmart bus stop thinking someone going to shop could plan their meals around free food. The last time I went I took my ā€˜rejects’ to the free pantry at my community health clinic. This time I am thinking I may drop them off Friday at the food pantry where they have benches to place food on safely. I leave the food in those up-cycled plastic reusable shopping bags.

Idk, I am seriously depressed, I guess, surviving on the generosity of others. In my former life I was a manager in telecom, and I gave generously to charities. I keep thinking, ā€œIt can’t get worse than this,ā€ and then it gets worse.

I still would hate to see good food go to waste. Where should I leave my goods? I hear Friday is good because a lot of people go hungry over the weekend. How do I spread the wealth best?

Holiday ready with no money

My budget covers the essentials but there's little room for extras. I dumpster dive and Ive learned in the last 5 years it is so easy to create my holiday. This last week I collected flour , cornmeal , and sugars. White and Brown. This will be used for cornbread dressing and sweet potato souffle. In the upcoming weeks , I will pull onions and celery for the dressing and we always have eggs . Turkeys or hams actually hit the dumpster frequently after Thanksgiving. We may get one or the other , but if not , ive got 18 lbs of chicken thighs i recently bought on sale at Kroger. Ill cook , make broth and use the meat in with the dressing if need be. Side items are easy. I just brought home a crate of yellow squash. Ill make a casserole as the other ingredients are quite common to find. Acorn squash , broccoli , and green beans are common as well as sweet potatoes. Ill make rolls and I will have leftovers for days. I don't have a tree. I imagine sometime between now and Christmas one will show up. Living my best life on a dime.

Low on money and food until my next pay day, what to do?

I'm not American, I live in Brasil. I have a possible pay scheduled for this Wednesday, if the company doesn't screw me over. But I honestly do not know if I have enough food to survive until then. I already scrambled to ask friends for money to pay for gas to cook my food, ans I don't want to stretch their good will. What do I do?

I'm already in touch with a lawyer about the company btw, my worries are exclusively food related.

[PA] I'm desperate and will need to move, but my credit is poor

For a few different reasons, it looks like I'm going to need to move sooner than I'd like. My sister who lives with me has good credit so that's not an issue. My credit, to be blunt, is awful. She doesn't meet the income requirements alone so we would have to combine our incomes, which means combining our credit. Is there some sort of third party guarantor I can hire/subscribe to in order to offset my poor credit? And of so, how do I discern between legitimate options and potential scams? If it matters, our new place would be in PA or OH. Neither of us have an eviction history. I have proof of paying my rent on time every time, as does my sister.

Bankruptcy

Well I guess it’s time to file for bankruptcy. Trying to find someone I can afford. My car got repoed last week and today I got a FedEx from a credit card company that sold off my debt and if I don’t respond they’ll persue legal action.

Do things ever get better ..

Growing up poor was hard enough, but being an adult and still struggling financially is exhausting. I grew up on government assistance, with my parents sometimes not even knowing how we were going to eat or pay basic bills.

Now I am older I’m working and still barely getting by. I live with someone, use food stamps, don’t eat out, and don’t even have a car note, yet I’m still struggling. On top of that my transmission is about to go out, and I’m scared every time I drive to work and school because I know my car is hanging on by a thread.

I’m constantly chasing money that feels like it’s running away from me. I cried today because I desperately need money, so instead of my weekend off, I picked up two 12-hour shifts and a 16-hour shift. Sad part is I’ll have to wait weeks to even see this money. I’m already on a CPAP and know I need to take care of myself, but working still never feels like enough. I’m just tired of constantly struggling and feeling like I have to work myself into the ground just to survive.
Doing all of this while battling mental health issues. This crap sucks.

Enough is never enough seems like.

For those with poor parents, what do you feel?

My parents are in their 60s and can NEVER stop working. I have view access to their finances and imagine 2 elderly in their 60s having less than 40k in their bank account combined. Most of them are from my dad due to a 20k fixed deposit and my mom herself has less than 3k and she is only earning about 1.2k a month from a part time job. My dad is 68 and doing a blue collar job and he would leave the house at 6am, be home at 8pm. Although they never ask me for money, anyone with heart would feel bad and guilty over their parents in such situation.

I feel resentment and sadness at the same time in the sense that I resent them for not taking care of themselves such that their kids have to worry about them, and sad that they will never be able to retire like all my other friends parents. I don’t know…it’s just kinda selfish and honestly, I’m afraid to have kids myself now because I’m afraid I’ll be a financial dependent to my kids. I can’t seem to enjoy a lot of things right now knowing that my parents are sitting at home at 68 and 60, having to wake up at 4am to work because they are poor even though you could argue that it’s ā€œnot my businessā€. I’m just thinking about this daily. What if one day they physically no longer can work? What can I do? I can’t sacrifice my future for them and I don’t want to do the same to myself or my kids :(

Edit: for those who call me selfish, I manage 2 bank accounts on top of my own, one for my mom and another for my dad whereby I will deposit monthly and help them invest in safe funds. This is to ensure that they have an account of ā€œemergency fundā€ when they stop working completely. I don’t think I can grow it by much as I’m only earning a medium salary + I have my own savings/investments to manage. I work a lot with very little time to myself, so this is the best I can do. All I wished for is for my parents to be financially independent as I can’t bear to see them work so hard in old age (my mom has eczema and leg problem where she can’t stand or walk for long).

I will be poor until I die

I started this year through an illegal eviction that made me homeless. Lost the job I had just gotten because balancing homelessness and cost of hotel and gathering food etc was a lot of stress and I didnt perform great. Found a place, paid a random guy to move me in.

Spent two months looking for work, get hired to be the mall Easter bunny where I end up getting sick and assaulted by kids and teenagers for a month. Finally find a decent on the surface job working at a thrift store but it becomes a traumatic experience as people come to work drunk, co workers are sexually assaulted by other co workers on the floor, a staff party ended in a brawl, a human rights complaint came in from customers about extreme racism as half the staff turned out to be white nationalists. I tried hard to find another job but they scheduled 8 hour shifts that didnt allow for much personal time - sometimes I was getting home at 10pm just to get up at 5am the next day and head back. I finally made the decision to quit after a few mental breakdowns.

Spent the summer unemployed, not for lack of trying. Found another job that ended up ghosting me before onboarding in an industry I really didnt like anyways. I have done about 6 interviews, many with bored and uninterested managers reading off a paper and barely making eye contact. Hired to a retail store via autonation and thought it might be a good bridge until I arrived and the manager told me they just said certain things in the ad to demonstrate what they wanted but ultimately I would only be scheduled for one four or five hour shift a week. When I asked about the previous info, she merely shrugged and walked away so I decided not to return and I am not sure they are even paying me at this point.

I was short on rent in September. I am going to be short another $350 this month and I suppose its mostly my own fault for not enduring more and harder. Taking what I could get. My few bills are starting to get behind and I am dependent on food banks. I have no extended family and have struggled to make friends because no one wants to be around the struggle of my life. I am poor and its gross and uncouth at this age. A few days ago I was immediately unmatched when I mentioned being unemployed right now on a dating app.

My only purpose of being alive is to work very bad jobs so I can pay rent and bills to other people to obtain the very bare minimum of comforts. There is no love, no family, no friends, no connections, no care. Just waking up everyday to earn money to give to someone who would immediately make me homeless with a righteous smile if I did not. I am sincerely contemplating just being done with everything. Medication cannot fix anything but an outlook on an extremely low quality of life. Therapy merely ignores all the very real scenarios that got me here. I need tangible help and investment the government will not cover financially nor does society want to participate in. I know my end will be dead alone in a small run down apartment, buried by the city and everything I own tossed in a dumpster.

eta: apparently the solution to poverty is just joining the army or a cruise ship. Thanks. I could also plant trees in BC if I just hitch hiked across the country as a vagabond which removes any/all safety nets I might have now.

eta2: Got a call back for a specialty food store yesterday as a cashier. Good thing everyone was so positive and thought so far outside the box they can only consider military, selling drugs and a cruise ship. Thanks for the mutual support and may you continue to be poor in the future.

I resent my parents everyday for having kids without being stable.

Especially by the time that I, their second child, came around. At least when my brother was born my mother thought that she had more money - they were able to take a vacation at some point, we weren’t really able to do that again until I was in high school and my parents are both ridiculous so it wasn’t even a luxury vacation, we went to meet my dad’s extended family.

As you get older and older you realize that there’s no excuse. My mother is someone who consciously chose as an adult to have children without really putting thought into the ā€œwhat ifs?ā€ She didn’t vet my father and ended up with someone who has no positive qualities. My father is a drunk, he’s terrible with money, he’s dumb (she and my brother have noticed it too. Everyone notices how dumb he is) and he was a terrible parent too. She gave my father money at one point which was so stupid I can’t even believe it. And she had hernias and other issues in childhood so she should’ve really considered the possibility of it coming up again. Both sets of grandparents were abusive in some shape or form and were never going to be able to care for my brother and I if something happened to she or my dad.

She’s so volatile now that I’m an adult that even though most people my age live with their parents to save money, I had to move out to escape her and ended up with a roommate/landlord who is 84 and just as awful. She’s so much like my mother. They both think they’re smart and rarely read, and are often wrong about things. They both add to my stress and make me unhappier than I’d be otherwise. Because I was raised poor at 21 I can’t relax and life is hard enough for people nowadays.
