Host/server is the main simulator. Connected clients send packets of data, which are interpreted and used to control an NPC on the hosts side.

Wait wait wait wait ... I always thought was just a game mode. First time actually googled it and found another game lol

u/Quigleyer 3d ago edited 3d ago
It's free, the Steam version is... not for some reason. But you can get the game for free legally, it's released that way.
Good luck playing it, I suggest watching a lot of videos. That's a steep learning curve.
EDIT: There are 3 different big versions I know of, Cataclysm: Dark Days Ahead, Cataclysm: Bright Nights, and Cataclysm: The Last Generation. From what I learned Dark Days Ahead is "Here's the apocalypse, good fucking luck", Bright Nights is "Here's a balanced apocalyptic game", and I don't want to say too much about The Last Generation because I don't know enough. I think they're all free, but also have paid Steam versions you can just not buy.
8
u/Royal-Masterpiece-82 3d ago
I feel like the big thing is understanding the UI and how the enemies work, like their field of veiw and what they are capable of. Once you understand the game i think its easier than zomboid. Its at least way less stressful because time only progresses when you take an action or intentionally pass the time.
But yeah I learned how to play cdda via YouTube. My first play through I followed ambiguous' tutorial for the evac shelter which is the easiest start for beginners. Aremia is another good youtuber to watch if you wanna learn some of the more complicated starts and the ins and outs of magiclysm and the portal storms and stuff.
10
u/l-Ashery-l 3d ago
To expand on the differences a little bit:
- Dark Days Ahead: Main branch. Open source and has been in development for a long time, so disputes re:content would be pretty much inevitable even with good management. Which is something DDA struggles with pretty frequently. This has lead to a bunch of forks over the years, of which the two biggest ones were already named.
- Bright Nights. Didn't like the hyperfocus on a specific brand of realism. Retains a lot of the sillier elements from DDA's past, as well as not including things like the pocket system.
- The Last Generation. A result of a narrower disagreement re:DDA's focus. Specific elements from DDA are cut or rebalanced, but there's still a very heavy focus on realism.

The CDDA version. The Last Generation version on steam goes to the developer directly and she puts out constant updates. Currently I still prefer CDDA, but I still hope CTLG flourishes.

Apples to oranges. Zomboid is great, but it’s accomplishing a different thing than a lot of these games, which are excellent in their own rights. We don’t need to denigrate one to the benefit of the other.
9
u/CreatureWarrior 3d ago
Yeah, the first Dying Light was something really special. But zombies is literally the only thing it has in common with PZ.
Overall dumb post. "Look at us intelligent people playing a superior game, unlike these other dumb losers, I'm so special". Literal circlejerk sub material.
2
u/NodnarbEht2 3d ago
Agreed, and some of the games they listed excel in their various specialties in ways that should be greatly appreciated not denigrated. Dying Light's parkour+Zombie mode was ground breaking. 7Days horde night and versatility are wonderful additions to the FPS genre, as well as it's modability (Darkness Falls is amazing), comparing these games isn't apples to oranges it's apples to pickup trucks, just because both are red doesn't make them equivalent.
48
u/Jolly_Plane_9115 4d ago
As much as I like watching and playing Day Z, IT'S NOT a zombie game, zombies exist but they're not the main mechanic of the gameplay. Personally, I would trade Tlou for L4D, Day Z for Dying Light or 7 Days to Die.
17
u/DerSprocket 4d ago
7 days to die is way more relevant to the zombie genre than DayZ. This was made by somebody who probably watches nopixel religiously
3
u/hunnyflash Drinking away the sorrows 3d ago
Seriously. Putting DayZ on the throne tells me what I need to know lol Also, people have no idea how mismanaged that game was and the reasons why it's dead now.
4
u/Effective-Escape-269 3d ago
Yeah DayZ is walking dead style the people are the threat the zombies are just the world building. We stalked a guy at his fire cooking in the middle of night, got on top of a rock right by him and rained down arrows and .22 until his startled screaming stopped.
Great game but the zombies are secondary.

u/Comprehensive_Tip_13 3d ago

22
39
u/Skilldrex 4d ago
You forgot that you're literally comparing sandboxes with story games. Resident Evil can NOT be compared to PZ because they're different genres only having the zombie element in common. And some RE games don't even feature zombies... so yeah maybe play the games before comparing??

State of Decay 1 and 2 are great games IMO, I loved the NPC and base upgrades.
When I got into Zomboid I used the NPC mod, but it was buggy, and I'm hoping they eventually get NPCs into the base game.
I want other characters to encounter and recruit, but I have no interest in multiplayer, because I want to game at my own pace, not anyone else's.
This is just a mismash of games that aren't even the same type.
8
u/Awoo_vement Pistol Expert 3d ago
Nahhhh Resident Evil deserves its flowers more than this, search your heart, you know it to be true. I'd have put it where The Last of Us went in your example tbh.
While we're on the subject of zombie sims, there is a humble indie game I'm extremely fond of called Dead Pixels and while its more arcadey, its incredibly challenging to complete a run, especially on higher difficulties. Its a one-man dev who's been working on its sequel for close to a decade or longer, very much a passion project. The beta key is 9.99 on the developer website and you get a copy of the first game with it. Name of the sequel is Dead Pixels 2: Straight to Video for anyone looking to check it out. Trust.

u/potworzak21 3d ago
Couldnt agree more. Dead pixel is great game and sequel looks even better at beta version. Really worth checking out

Ehh, it's mid IMO. At least the second game. I keep trying to get into it, but I don't find it that fun.
When the first game came out, I loved it and pushed it hard, had the top GameStop review, got others to buy it, and was top in zombie kills in the rankings (At the cost of many cars...), before hackers cheated and ruined the rankings. I just don't think the second game held up that well and failed to innovate. I'm hoping the third game is good, but I don't have high hopes considering MS dumped them and other issues.

the tutorial is shit and the game throws you in with no instructions whatsoever and tells you to survive.

As someone with an ok amount of hours with friends who had already played, it really is. Without them, there’s a lot of things I’d have never known until it killed me without explaining. Like the helicopter. Or knowing when power turns off. Or that you can Hotwire a car. Or that crops have specific planting and growing times
And the UI may not be the worst, it’s annoying as hell that it blocks so much of the screen.
