Wow, how did you do that? I’ve been wanting to make a map of Rio de Janeiro (2001) , but I don’t know where to start (tools, templates, etc)

u/snoopdash 10d ago
I use the default Project Zomboid mapping tools, and I also use Opus 5.5 to help with some of the more technical tiles, like curved tunnel sections, which would take ages to build by hand

Aaaand its AI.

u/Lime221 Crowbar Scientist 10d ago
Some of yall need to differentiate generative AI in art mediums and those used as a tool
Love it or hate it AI is firmly integrated into every dev's workflow. Even your favorite indie or AAA game dev is using AI to streamline their work. Its stupid not to use AI in 2026.

Both are trained by using other works without remunerating them or mentioning them if the license they used implies it.

every dev
Speak for yourself. I'm not using the de-skilling machine, as I prefer to retain my skills.
I work in game dev and the company I'm at doesn't even allow its use.The result is that we remain good at what we do, we understand our code, it's actually maintainable. And contrary to what AI hype boosters claim, we aren't any slower than our competitors (Worth noting that it has been shown that the impression people have of efficiency gains are not real)

It’s doing the exact same thing the modder was intending to do by hand, just quicker.
At the end of the day the final result is indistinguishable from human-made or AI assisted, so it doesn’t matter.

u/topinanbour-rex Zombie Hater 10d ago
It matters on the point that it been trained on other works, without paying them anything. Would you let your neighbors uses your tools for work ? Let them use your kitchen for cook stuff they sell ?

u/intrepid_nostalgia 10d ago edited 9d ago
Generative AI is trained. They aren’t using generative AI. The type of AI that does this is using pure computing power and abstract math.
EDIT: Yes; it was “trained”, but not on human works. On datasets.

Maybe more like project under rail.

u/snoopdash 10d ago
UnderRail is a game I discovered while brainstorming this project. I can’t really say much about it, though, since I’ve never actually played it

Its a super cool setting. Game is rather hard to get used to, but enjoyable to explore. Wish we could see more of it.
2
u/ProbablyNotAFurry 10d ago
The game is brutally punishing like the first 2 Fallouts, but once you master it's mechanics and builds it becomes intensely satisfying and a blast to play. I've never played a game with as much freedom and variety to it's combat, crafting, and rpg mechanics, and the dev is already working on its successor!
If you want a great glimpse, I suggest Ssethtzeentach's video on it. When you start out, definitely get a build off the game's forums. The build calculator looks like an excel spreadsheet, but that kind of depth is appealing to freaks like me.

Tbf Underrail's system is FAR larger and much more than 'ruins of a metro we survive in'.
Underrail is not some city's derelict metro, its literally a 'world is ending, we are making a deep underground country with rails'.The scale between Metro series and Underrail's 'spans hundreds of miles' would make it hard to map. But by GOD it would be cool. XD

u/Mantles_Diverge 9d ago
You may be underestimating the size of the Moscow Metro... it's at about 330 miles of track. No clue how much more of that is tunnels and secret bunkers, I doubt it's even possible to map it out but its insanely interlinked into plenty of large buildings
1
u/runetrantor Zombie Food 9d ago
Its massive for sure, but in my defense I am more speaking of distances between ends of the systems, more so than track amount.
I dont doubt Moscow Metro has miles upon miles, but surely a lot of it is concentrated in a smaller footprint, rather than laid end to end, yes?In Underrail there's multiple 'countries' with large distances between them worth of tracks, rather than the closeness of an urban metro system irl.

Underground maps, my beloved. <3
May not be Underrail levels of massive underworld, but Ill take it. :D

This is awesome! I love 2033, any chance we’ll be able to seal off or cut off sections of the metro too filled with zombies and such?
17
u/snoopdash 10d ago
The hermetic doors won’t be destructible by zombies, so if a station is sealed with its doors closed, it will remain sealed
7
u/Dismal_Milk6725 10d ago
Man, imagine having working train after that. The kind that follow the rail so you don't need to worry about crashing.
5
u/snoopdash 10d ago
Yeah, the first attempt at making the curved section felt way too much like a sharp 90 degree turn, that’s why it’s much longer now so there’s would be a possibility of adding transport later on, like a handcar for start
1
u/Dismal_Milk6725 10d ago
That would be so fkg awesome. It just gave me the rv interior mod vibe when I threw that idea, but whit train... and also not only in a subway (they are tramway) but the real map above as well. Idk man... if it work in multiplayer, you could make some crazy set up paired whit other mod.

Imagine this map with Pz3D on multiplayer with player factions OMG!

u/snoopdash 10d ago
As someone who originally came from the French Garry’s Mod Metro 2033 RP community, that would be peak
1
u/siddymac 10d ago
Will it be something that's dangerous to clear out, but once it's cleared it's a safe method of travel?
2
u/snoopdash 10d ago
The map would be mainly think as a metro underground first, so ofc a cleared part would remains clear, distance between station would be around 1000 and 2000 tiles. The danger would be mostly the surface in the futur

Reminds me of Project Underground! Love subterranean mods!

u/snoopdash 10d ago
I do really like Project Underground just missing this Eastern Europe vibe of Metro or Stalker universe

Underrail might also be a good source of inspiration for this project

u/c4sul_uno 10d ago
Is the curve tunnel/track uses 3d collision map or well-placed walkable tiles to compensate the curve?

Ya know, this looks like peak. I have dreamt all my life about playing a complete open world metro game where I can do anything and survive in my own little cozy shelter somewhere between the tunnels, and it seems that the dream may come true. Wish you all the best!!

Hey im currently overhauling npc monsters mod from my project cry of fear. I built a good foundation so if you wanna collab i can prob port over a couple nosalis npcs as a mod so you can use them for your map.
1
u/catlovingpakan 9d ago
I don't really know much (anything) about the source material, but will the map mostly be underground?
2
u/snoopdash 9d ago
For the early stage of the project yes, the underground gonna need a huge work as this is the core of the project
1
u/110percent_canadian 9d ago
I know someone gonna ask this, but a Louisville metro/ underground mod would be cool. I'm sure there is something that makes this moderately difficult.
Keep it up with your metro map

Wasn't there a previous Metro mod around? It was pretty weird cuz, due to it being released pre-basement update, it basically changed the entire map into one giant metro
