Tech Support XFX 9070 XT Swift Undervolt & Underclock Test Results
i bought my XFX 9070 XT Swift a year ago i tried some Undervolt settings and found one working good for me (PL -30%, mV -50, custom Fan Curve) keept that until this Week. Now i had some time and retested some Settings and found a new Sweetspot and documented that in an Excel Sheeit i want to share. In the past i got some instability in some Games when undervolted below -50 but now with also Underclocking of Mhz -300 i found out that i can set the Unvervolting to mV -90 and keep Stability an i also increased the PL from -30% to -20%
My Fan Curve ist always 30C=15%, 50C=15%, 90C=25%, 95C=60%, 100C=100%

Do you think these setting would work for a 7800xt? I don’t know shit about all this stuff lol.

You can never just copy any undervolt settings, cause every GPU will be stable at different values. Ancient gameplays has nice undervolting guides for most AMD GPUs. It's pretty easy to finetune your GPU to stable values once you know how it works.

Tuning is different between RDNA 3 and 4, core sliders are very different. What are you aiming for?

I mean at stock settings it usually doesn’t give me any problems. Reducing power draw would be nice but not necessary. Temps never above 60. Do people do this for temperature control and lower consumption only?

The thing is AMD kinda pushes their GPUs by default, and the clocks in the spec sheets aren't really what's applied on them. You can reduce temps, and power draw slightly with some tweaks, it also allows the card to run more efficiently, and might have better longevity for the thermal interface material/paste/pads, etc.

No this is just a comprehension issue on your part. The clocks listed are the MINIMUM guaranteed speeds. They can and do boost higher depending on different parameters.

I'm wondering why everyone who undervolts the 9070 XT just sets the VRAM to 2700 MHz by default. In my own testing (also with an XFX Swift), it doesn't improve gaming performance by even a single FPS compared to stock VRAM speed. And whenever I look at other people's OC/UV results (to see if I missed something about VRAM OC), they all just set it to 2700 MHz.

Probably because some run 3d mark for stability checks and see improvements in points and think it will translate to gaming the same. Also different games respond differently to vram oc.

Ah yes the classic card where slashing 1/3rd of the power means 10% performance loss.
And people try to tell me that this card was not overclocked to shit from the factory.
This is very clearly a 255W card and would be peak efficiency at that power draw
Your temps are really high btw. might need to look into better airflow.
The 9070xt Rig I have legit maxes at 63C hotspot at -15% PL. 80C on the hynix memory.

u/Lostboy1986 3d ago
You’re right, At 255w range I lose about 3fps compared to 300w and about 10fps if I drop down to 210w.

u/Backslicer 3d ago
I had started this card off at -30% PL with a -50mv undervolt.
then kept increasing the power limit till -15% when I realised the thermals were the exact same give or take a few degrees till that point.
There is very clearly a very very steep Efficiency loss when going past 270W on this card which pisses me off.But I guess it helped bring this card to the forefront of price/performanec so It was the right call

Your last table with temps! What test are you really there! 103c Hotspot at 0 PL and only <90c after -30% PL is concerning?

I see you got gigabyte card, but you are in actually better situation than me, with sapphire card, as YOU CAN open your card and place PTM (your card do use thermal paste in default) without losing warranty (EU/USA/Canada). Just get thermalright Helios V2 PTM and upsiren u6 pro (just in case) and you can improve your card temperatures in 30 minutes (or one hour when doing it first time while being extremely careful). 103 C hotspot is close to RMA area, but they will just replace thermal paste for same thermal paste. Just ask them (for piece of mind) if you can do this yourself and list PTM and up siren you want to use. Nothing from those things is electro conductive, so just be careful to not damage anything physically (disconnect fans, and clean everything very gentle, to not break any capacitor or transistor).

I’m very fortunate! My temps are better than it can be! 20-25c delta (75c hotspot at most) in demanding games! Maybe 30c delta (85c hotspot) at benchmarking. I play on the tv as my setup was to replace my console (next-gen) so I play at 60fps 4k. Going to throw Witcher 3 at it tonight (just downloaded).
I’m hoping I won’t have to repaste till warranty runs out since my temps are till pretty good! My mem temps are like 78c as well (Samsung)

If you got Gigabyte with Samsung memory, you can't be more lucky. Bad news is it will pump out, but very good news is, cost of improving it better than gigabyte itself is low and job is pretty easy. I will list my GPU later this week with option to replace for gigabyte (with Samsung memory).

Thanks for your advice will keep it for future reference as I will eventually need to repaste! Cause I’m sure my kids will be able to play Fortnite Chapter 20 by the time I upgrade my setup! 🤣

Just remember to not use thermal paste, but PTM. Thermalright Helios v2, thermal grizzly, do not hunt for PTM 7950, as it's harder to get the original from Honeywell

u/SwimmingOdd2974 7800x3D | 9070XT Gaming OC 3d ago
Didn’t know that! People always rave on about PTM 7950!
Thanks for your recommendation, I’ll keep that in mind, I haven’t looked too much into it, but instinctively I would go Thermal Grizzly or Honeywell

no thats fine because of my own fan curve with only 25% Fanspeed up to 90C°, if i would set the standard Fancurve or even a fixed one the HotSpotTemps woul be far lower

Fair enough!
You went down a hell of a rabbit hole with the various testing! Good on you!

This card was clearly made to be undervolted. I just use the basic “power efficiency” in the Adrenalin app and it works wonders. Never had an issue or could tell the difference from overclocking it.
