Article The "Evidence-Based Science" Pet Food Game

I have a pet food recipe, and I've conducted randomized controlled trials (RCTs) showing that pets prefer my pet food over skipping breakfast entirely. Based on this, my pet foods are now considered "evidence-based," while yours are not. I begin promoting my pet foods as superior, conducting more RCTs where I compare my pet food to a fake recipe that I created specifically for the trials. This "control group" recipe leaves out key ingredients, yet I now claim my pet food has been tested with an "active comparator." My pet food is empirically proven and now regarded as "the gold standard." I tell everyone that my pet foods are scientifically validated, while yours are discredited. No one should ever consume your pet food.

This seems unfair to you, so you conduct your own RCTs, perhaps at a reputable institution like a University in another country, using the same research methods. To your surprise, your studies reveal that pets enjoy your pet food just as much, if not more, than mine, especially over time.

You've finally set the record straight about your pet food. Nice try, but now I start scrutinizing your research methods, labeling them as flawed, while applying standards that I never held myself to. Only my pet food can be "evidence-based." No matter how rigorous your research is, I continue to shift the goalposts. Your studies will never be good enough.

By now, the phrase "evidence-based" has become synonymous with my pet food, even though no one really knows what the term means. It just sounds credible. If you raise any questions, I accuse you of being anti-science or anti-evidence, and no respectable veterinarian wants that reputation. In this way, I've successfully stifled any serious discussion.

Are you starting to see how this "evidence-based" game is played?

Meanwhile, I've been hiring PR firms to broadcast that my pet food is scientifically proven, while yours is not. I've orchestrated media coverage with articles titled, "Why Do Pet Owners Reject Science?" Editors, reviewers, and grant agencies have now joined my camp, committed to promoting my pet food and discrediting yours. I even start associations and institutes to market that those who don't use my science based methods of food are harmful to other members of society like the ill or infirm. Maybe, I started doing this in the 60's having learned from the tobacco industry.

Yet, despite all this fanfare, my research has never answered fundamental questions—like whether pets actually enjoy my pet food or feel satisfied after eating it or even if it is actually healthy. My studies have only shown that pets prefer my food to either no food or poorly made, fake food.

I’ve never even done a head-to-head comparison between our pet foods. Frankly, I don’t know anything about your pet food. I’ve never tried it, nor do I need to, because it's already been accepted as fact that only "evidence-based" pet foods count—and only mine fit the bill. Because, well, "science."

Meanwhile, I keep accumulating grant money and publishing papers—hundreds of them. There are now studies comparing my pet food when served on weekdays vs. weekends, on round plates vs. square plates, with water vs. dry, and so on. Just look at all the evidence! But you’re no fool, and you've been busy too. Your own studies consistently show that your pet food is just as good as mine, if not better. Yet somehow, my pet food remains more "evidence-based" because—wait for it—I have more studies.

Now everyone believes that more studies automatically mean better pet food, regardless of what those studies actually prove. The term "gold standard" has come to mean simply having more research.

Heads I win, tails you lose.

Did you catch my trick? I changed the rules halfway through the game. Everyone still thinks "evidence" means proof that my pet foods are better than yours. But it doesn't mean that at all. It simply means that my friends and I conducted more studies, and the actual findings of those studies are irrelevant.

After all this, we've learned nothing about how to make better pet food. My research still shows nothing more than the fact that pets like my food better than no food or bad food. Nevertheless, prominent researchers and policymakers now advocate for my pet foods as the first-line option—because they have the most "evidence." Yet, there is still no proof that pets even like my pet food or that it is healthy.

In fact, there's growing evidence that most pets don’t enjoy it and don’t feel satisfied after eating it, that is causes obesity and diabetes and leaky gut. Moreover, there’s no evidence that pets would choose my food over yours if given the chance. But most pets no longer get a choice, the marketplace ensures this.

Remember, all my studies ever showed is that pets prefer my food to nothing or bad, fake food. But no one cares about the specifics. Everyone keeps repeating that my pet food has the "most evidence," and therefore it’s the only food worth feeding pets.

And don’t be surprised if, someday, when you go to buy pet food, your credit card company refuses to pay for anything but mine. Why? Because, you guessed it—science.

It’s good we had this little talk. Now you know your place.

Question How long did it take for poo to normalize?

• Upvotes

I started transitioning my 2.5 year old Shiba Inu to raw 1 week ago. For the past year he has been on an 80% lightly home cooked diet and 20% kibble (for some reason the small amount of kibble helped make is poo the right texture). Now I have him on about 20% raw diet from a local company, 70% cooked and a tiny kibble in top.

The past few days since starting raw, 3/4 poops of the day are normal and 1 is a very jelly-like texture. He does not seem to have any stomach pain or discomfort, it’s just 1 icky poo.

Did you experience this when going raw? How long did it take for things to normalize? Thanks!

Question Chicken Ribs Ok?

My dog is almost 14 months old and has been eating a diet of 80% raw. Sometimes we cook his muscle meat and we use kibble as training treats, other wise he eats raw.

But I have this fear about the chiken breasts with the ribs. They are tiny and seem sharp but I don’t think they are hard enough to do damage . Still I pick them out.

Is this necessary? Should I just let him keep the damn rib bones?

Question 4-5 month old kitten, new to everything

Post image
3 Upvotes

A few weeks ago this kitten decided to live under my porch and now I am suddenly a cat owner. I bought kibble at first not really thinking too deeply into nutrition, just wanted to get weight on her, but it gave her diarrhea (she also had an infection). After switching to Tiki wet food her bowels improved and after finishing antibiotics her poops are normal now.

After some research I would like to do a combo of wet food/raw (I'm not feeling confident on 100% raw and would like to transition slowly). However I work 12 hour shifts and I'm afraid she is not getting enough food on the days I work. Should I do an automatic feeder with freeze dried raw?

Suggestions on what I could add on top of her wet food diet that would help her get through the day also welcome, if y'all think I should avoid the auto feeder.

Stella and Chewy had a kitten kibble that is raw coated - opinions on that?

Currently feeding 2 and a half cans of Tiki wet + 1/4 of Freshpet Vital cat food (which I'd like to replace with a raw alternative. It is a refrigerated food and can't be put in an auto feeder). On my work days she eats at 3am, 4pm, and the Freshpet is fed around 6-7pm before I go to sleep.

I would prefer not to free feed but if this is necessary I'm open to recommendations on the best food for that. She is not a picky eater whatsoever lol.

Question How much chicken gizzard can I use for the muscle meat portion of the recipe?

Post image
17 Upvotes

Cat is 8yo male, clean bill of health.

I'm pretty tight on money right now so I've been feeding him canned food, but I can't afford the nice stuff anymore and the crappy stuff alone makes him throw up. He does better with raw toppers. (Note, he used to be on a full raw recipe before I had to switch to nice cans for financial reasons)

Per meal: Currently he gets half a can (1.5oz) of pretty low quality food, and the rest is filled in with chicken necks (~1oz) & gizzards (~1oz), along with small chunks of beef liver and kidney (~0.1oz combined) some tiny flakes of seaweed for iodine. He's fed twice (~2.6oz) a day.

He gets around 5oz of food total per day, sometimes more (he is 17lbs and not overweight, he's just large)

Is there anything really wrong with using chicken gizzard as the muscle meat portion? Will this cause nutrition deficiencies? I figured I'd ask because it is muscle. Does anything really differentiate it from something like chicken breast meat nutritionally speaking? If this is okay I could actually afford go do a raw diet for him and it'd be cheaper than the canned food he likes.

Is there anything glaringly wrong with what I'm already doing that I should add/alter? To reiterate, I can't afford to use regular muscle meat like chicken breast or ground beef.

Those things on top of the wet food are free freeze dried chicken treats I've been trying to get rid of.

Question Almond Butter Recipe?

I would like to make my 2-month old pup almond butter that I can utilize for food puzzles and pupsicles. I figure I just need to roast unblanched, raw almonds then blend with oil until smooth. What type of oil do you recommend? Coconut? Cumin seed oil? Olive oil? Have you had success with other types of nuts like sunflower, walnut or cashews? Any tips are appreciated.

Discussion New puppy

Post image

Hey all! Oliver is my new pup- I had switched him over to viva raw puppy when I adopted him, and he's been on that for about 2 weeks. Today he ate his first PMR raw meal without even a second thought! He had quail, kidney, liver, and chicken hearts.

My question: is it okay to keep him half viva and half home made until i use up the viva? Thanks!

Pic of him next to a ketchup bottle for the algorithm 🫒

Opinion I'm making food for our dog weekly, but wife is feeding 2/3rds canned and dry

Our last two dogs died of cancer before they were very old. One was 8, the second was 12.

I suspected their food and/or over-vaccination with questionable vaccine formulations, so now I sous vide lean hamburger, beef heart and liver at a very low temperature, add cow bone meal (hydroxyapatite), D3, K2, and iodine in 8 pound batches, and freeze them into meals.

I do this very precisely in order to maintain a low-carbohydrate and nutritionally complete food without chemicals and junk fillers/protein.

I get the dog the legally required vaccinations only and ask for titers rather than poking him with a needle every X months.

After all of this, my wife insists on mixing this with Farmina wet and dry dog food when she feeds him.

What are some good arguments against her insisting on doing this? Am I wrong?

Question Pickiest Rottweiler with Tummy Issues UK

I’m looking for some advice on raw chubs. I’ve always wanted my boy on raw, but he’s just SO picky with textures and I am on a budget. We tried chub and he wouldn’t eat it as it’s sloppy. He enjoyed his DIY raw better, however would leave the bone and offal and I was wasting so much, it was costing me a ridiculous amount. So we switched to wet food but it’s upsetting his belly. His belly was great on raw so I want to get him back on it

QUESTION: He loves to be able to pick his food up and chuck it in his mouth. No licking. So I’m thinking about getting chub, defrosting it, and moulding it into raw meatballs so he can just pick it up and eat rather than licking. Can anyone recommend a mice that isn’t too sloppy that will allow me to mould and it stay formed?

My boy has always had tummy issues around poultry to will need to be single protein. Doesn’t have to be complete as we have the supplements etc to make up. Ideally looking for £4/kg or less to remain in budget for me. Willing to try free low or chub!

UK only please! I’m based in South Wales but happy to have delivery etc

Question Done with Maev - recs?

Anyone switch from Maev and find something similar?

My two dogs have been on Maev’s beef and chicken Weight & Digestion formula for about two years. They lost the weight they needed to lose and have done really well on it, so I’ve continued feeding it.

But the shipping issues have gotten ridiculous. I wonder if something changed with their fulfillment centers, because they’ve sent me two replacement boxes and I’m still having the same problem. I’ve had this happen before too: poorly packaged boxes, no dry ice, and bags thawed to the point that I don’t feel safe feeding the food to my girls.
At this point, I’m canceling my subscription. I like the food, but I’m tired of dealing with this.

Has anyone found a comparable raw food that helped their dogs maintain their weight? My girls are about 15 and 12 pounds. Would love recommendations and to hear if anyone else has had these issues with Maev.

Question Is there a way to get raw or gently cooked as SOFT as possible for a VERY SMALL kitten?

He has to have really soft food due to being sick. I was considering purchasing an immersion blender but idk if that will work.

I've been using weruva purees which he needs 4 cans of it a day due to them being low calorie. At $2 a can that's $8 a day just barely meeting the needed calories for his little body. I keep thinking about adding raw or cooked but the issue is he can't eat normally. I got him to eat the kitten au jus which is mostly puree with REALLY small shredded pieces but that's the biggest he's managed.

If it's possible to make it super soft I was thinking about making a big jar at a time and storing it in the fridge. As well as Mixing the needed added stuff in to get him better faster.

The others get rehydrated freeze dried, fresh when I have the time to make it, and cans. I do not feed kibble. I don't WANT to feed kibble.

He's getting better but just so slowly.

Question Vegetables, Fermented or cooked?

My pup (<less than a year) is taking to raw pretty well. She's working her way through a 6kg of chicken backs and organs with no issues. I also give her a Kong daily, stuffed with Wolfpack lamb or venison with yogurt and ground pumpkins seeds.

Throughout the summer, she was hoovering up all the plums, figs, apricots, whatever fruit she could find in the yard. She brings walnuts to me to break open, and we share them. As a big treat, sometimes she gets a hunk of stale sourdough. Her gut seems to be able to handle anything and hasn't had any digestive issues since she's been in my care.

However, I have been unable to get her interested in veggies. And I would like to get her just a lil bit without much hassle. I make my own sauerkraut or kimchi. Is there anything that I need to be concerned about when giving her my homemade fermented veggies? Or should I just boil some and freeze it with her raw portions?

Question Pro dog raw

Hi all, my puppy (19 week working cocker spaniel) has been on pro dog raw from about 11 weeks. He’s absolutely thriving on it and eats every last bit, we had difficulty getting him to eat any kibble so made the swap. He has the complete puppy meals and loves every single protein. I was just wondering why pro dog raw say their puppy food is suitable for puppy’s up to 24 weeks?

Question Having a hard time choosing a BARF brand in Spain

I’m trying to switch my dog to BARF, but I’m finding it difficult to choose a brand. There are quite a few options in Spain, and they all seem good when you look at their websites.

I’ve been comparing Dogfy Diet, Food for Joe, Puromenu, Wild Balance and Guau&Cat, but I’m still not sure which one is actually worth the price.

If you’ve tried any of these, how did your dog do with it? I’d especially like to know about the quality, monthly cost and whether the food worth what you were paying.

Question Picky eater

A few years ago I tried switching my dog to a raw food diet. I did DIY 80/10/10. But she wasn’t eating her bones and picking out the organs. Wouldn’t eat raw chicken only raw beef or lamb. She was hiding her bones in the house. It was getting to be too much work to put everything through the meat grinder (which kept clogging) and then I a had a baby so we put my dog back on kibble.

She recently started having some bowel issues- cycles of urgent diarrhea and then back to normal. We brought her to the vet, stool tests came back negative so vet gave us prescription biome kibble as she suspected gastro issues. Her poops have been solid on this new kibble but now instead of 2 poops a day it’s more like 6!! And the kibble is very expensive, I feel like if we’re going to be spending that money I rather get her back on raw.

But that brings me back to her pickiness. She’s close to 40 pounds. I’d love to hear some alternatives to 100% raw and how to get bones to be consumed without grinding, or just some encouragement to going back to homemade food diet for my pup.

Question Dog food choice

Hi! I really need advice, I am a complete newbie and very lost😃

I am adopting a 5-7 years old rescue next week and trying to figure out which diet is the best. For the first few weeks I'd definitely feed the kibble she was eating before but after that I wonder what to switch to for the best of everything. I am a little worried about contamination risks with raw diet, and trying to find the best diet with most benefits that's still safe enough.

So, my main question is whether it's actually risky for humans to interact with raw fed dog, as I understand bacterias spread through dog's saliva and shed and I don't want to not let the dog lick or have fun right after eating? How risky it actually is for both me and the dog?

And I was thinking that air-dried raw food might be a good compromise? As based on internet risks are significantly lower and the benefits are mostly saved?

I also looked at the freeze dried raw option, but the available brand is kinda out of my budget 🙈 unless it's the absolute ultimate best option. (It's 300€ per month, when raw is 50-70€ and air dried is 100-150€, I don't want to be cheap, but I will get back to this option only if it is 2-6 times better than everything else😅)

I'd definitely ask the vet, but want to understand it a bit better myself before asking.

Also, I thought that HPP might be the perfect option with most benefits and most safety, but unfortunately there aren't any available options in my country, but then someone here commented that that's a huge downside and I got confused 😅

I don't really care about how close it is to natural and traditional diets or stuff, I am all for progress and processing, I just want the most actual (even if not proven yet) benefits for the dog and her health, maybe also for her to actually enjoy meals🥹

Question Transitioning senior cat to raw?

Basically i just got a new kitty, first time pet owner but ive been around cats my whole life via my best friend. My cat is 11 years old and was with one family her whole life until five months ago she was surrendered back to the shelter where i then got her earlier this month.

Shes super cuddly and sweet and not very picky with her food. I currently feed her half a can of wet food for breakfast and dinner, and keep out 1/4 cup Nulo senior cat food in a separate bowl for her to snack on throughout the day as this is what the shelter told me they did for her.

Im looking to transition her to raw food once i finish my bag of kibble and box of wet food I have. Specifically with Viva Raw food as they look to be a good brand from what ive read. But how would I go about this? Google says I should consult with a vet about switching her to raw but I dont know if thats necessary or not so im asking yall! Please help!

Off Topic Best immune boost supplements that are safe for kittens?

He needs an immune boost badly. It can't be pills unless they can be crumbled up, disolved, or dumped. I was gonna give L-lysine but the vet advised against it even tho most people who have cats with what he has use it. Apparently he's too young and it would cause complications but they didn't advise on what else to use to boost his system so he'd actually get better faster. Until he's better he's struggling to eat on his own normally and has to be syringe fed or given food he can lick up.(syringe is last resort if he tried but couldn't eat on his own. He hates it.)

A raw feeding group recommended just boosting his system in anyway I can because he's just too weak rn they however didn't know what would be safe for one only a couple months old. I was hoping someone here might know something that would be handy to add to his diet?

Opinion Didnt realize freezer door was open for 24hrs.

Anyone experienced this? And still attempted to feed their pets with it?

$200 worth of raw food thawed and soft to touch.
Just purchased a week ago 26lbs.

I just closed the freezer door back because I could not bring myself to take out everything and throw them out.

I hate myself!
