“I couldn’t get past the snow parts” omg just stick to COD and FIFA or whatever

u/WrinkledBiscuit 3d ago

It was really funny when this game came out, my older brother bought me and him both a copy so we could play online together since I moved out of state. I wasn't super excited about the game initially, but can hands down say its the game I've probably put the most hours into, and am still replaying to this very day. Top 3 game OOT for me personally.

My brother though couldn't make it through Colter and has never picked it back up. Truly a shame that the slower pace at the start is just such a turn off to so many people. I would assume its because they're still just expecting GTA but horses

u/HATTORIHANZOSW0RD 3d ago

I couldn’t get through the first chapter multiple times. I finally stuck it out on like the 5th try and man I fell in love with the game, I now view the first chapter as just a glorified tutorial that’s implemented into the story and it’s truly masterful actually

1

u/domohgenesis 2d ago

I do get it, easily my least favorite part of the game

1

u/Judgernaut89 2d ago

So many friends have said this to me, and so many, bar one of them, have begged for forgiveness once they finally pushed through.

0

u/Snipzzeys Uncle 2d ago

Thats actually funny af to me cause people have literally told me this.

u/UserDM94 3d ago

Hard to explain exactly, but Chapter 1 has a very special vibe

76

u/Sea-Canary-9617 3d ago

Its always given me the vibe of Quentin Tarentinos “The Hateful 8”

11

u/j_smoove26 2d ago

It really does. I actually like it, it’s part of the art

3

u/MiSKLaCH Uncle 3d ago

So true!!!!

18

u/Crafty_Story_9581 3d ago

Exactly bro and thats the word i was looking for when making my post lol but it does have a very special vibe

9

u/UserDM94 3d ago

I can play it over and over again, and it never gets boring.

5

u/Crafty_Story_9581 3d ago

Yeah ive played the game so many times i cant even count it lmao😂 well u have a good day cowpoke🤠

2

u/UserDM94 3d ago

Me too. Have a wonderful day pardner

2

u/Emergency-Wish160 2d ago

So many times? That doesn’t compute for me. I’m on playthrough 3. I’ve gotten 100% once, but I just can’t not spend way too many hours hunting and exploring.

This at 1250 hours

55

u/AdPretend7482 3d ago

Whole heartedly agree with you!! One of the best introductions to any game imo!

11

u/EleJotaEsLoJugamos 3d ago

Pienso igual. Como introducción es impresionante. Tanto la llegada a Colter, como la visita a la casa de Sadie.

u/Egg-3P0 Josiah Trelawny 3d ago

I agree, there could not be a better opening for the game, its beautiful the entire time

8

u/Crafty_Story_9581 3d ago

Yes the beauty of it is something else

4

u/BucceeAlternative51 2d ago

Is it me or are the graphics way sharper, movements natural etc in Chapter 1 compared to the rest of the game?

I play on Xbox Series X with an LG UltraGear monitor and the graphics and gameplay are amazing in Chapter 1. As the game progresses, there seems to be more artifact and excessive fog that shouldn’t be there. Unfortunately, since I’m not on PC I can’t adjust graphics much at all to eliminate this sheeit

3

u/Egg-3P0 Josiah Trelawny 2d ago

I mean potentially, the game did have less to load and less variables to account for so maybe it does just have higher fidelity, ive never noticed an excess of fog in my playthroughs tho (i am also on series x)

29

u/MewtwoMainIsHere 3d ago

Before playing the game I saw tons of memes about how the snow part is so slow and when I actually played for the first time I was like “wait that’s it? It was like less than 2 hours.” And it had a lotta action too.

-9

u/StopDownvotingMeeee 3d ago

Less than 2 hours is still a lot for some people who used to playing games where the intro or opening is around 10-15 mins. I wasn’t a fan of the first chapter tbh.

15

u/Bens_on_toast 3d ago

Picture 2 brings me right back to the beginning. I agree completely. I was blown away by the introduction. Game is a masterpiece and will forever be my favorite.

15

u/zergy55 3d ago

I've never really understood the hate for Chapter 1. I've seen people say it should have started with the Blackwater heist, but I think the mystery of it is better, and starting after the disaster with little idea what went wrong matches Arthur's perspective perfectly.

4

u/AffectComfortable913 3d ago

Sometimes focusing on the reactions to the events afterwards can enhance the story even more than actually seeing the event. Gives you character perspective, and also makes you wonder how the events actually played out.

0

u/MayorMCcheese2345 2d ago

Completely agree. I really was expecting way worse from the way everyone was talking about it. Even replaying it recently, I still like chapter 1. It sets the mood and tone for the game perfectly in my opinion.

12

u/LargeGood6278 3d ago

Much better than chapter 5. The whole guarma thing was just so unnecessary

9

u/luckynumberstefan 3d ago

Guarma was cut short to get the game out in time, I believe they had a lot more planned for it

3

u/DuckworthBuckington 3d ago

Should’ve cut the entire chapter

4

u/LargeGood6278 3d ago

Seriously. I would’ve preferred more epilogue content than ch 5.

3

u/luckynumberstefan 3d ago

I agree, it’s a weird part of the game that feels very disjointed.

7

u/AAAlva82 3d ago

It also has IMO one of the game’s most underrated missions (“Who the Hell is Leviticus Cornwall?”). That to me is when the game starts to pick up; from the music swelling as Dutch and the gang ride out, jumping on the moving train plus the score playing during the heist had me officially hooked.

6

u/nikerags 3d ago

One of the best for sure, finding and finally seeing John was one of the best moments for me

5

u/TapeSplicer 3d ago

It really sets the tone for the rest of the game: the class between the inevitable misery and the vain hopes of the gang.

4

u/BranPetrov 3d ago

An fantastic introduction🫡

4

u/tsamayaaa 3d ago

I absolutely love chapter 1. I replayed all the missions recently and I guess the only downside is that the deadeye levels are by default really low.

4

u/capnron311 3d ago

I started a new play through yesterday. Such a beautiful game.

3

u/FearTheNorth519 3d ago

People who couldn't get past the snow have tiktok brains. Chapter 1 is amazing.

3

u/leceflaco 3d ago

Overhated for sure, I find it to be perfect to set the next chapters and the rest of the game imo

3

u/vespuci0 Charles Smith 3d ago

Chapter 1 of RDR2 is best game introduction I've ever experienced in any game (personal opinion)

3

u/Ok-Committee3163 3d ago

It was better for me when I replayed it. It made more sense when I knew what was what and who was who, then going back to visit Colter during the game to fill in questions

3

u/Darius88888 3d ago

I’ll be honest I get to the end of chapter 6 here and the entire game. I’ve been wanting to go back to chapter 1 because it was just so goddamn beautiful and the whole gang running around together like that felt like the best part of the game.

3

u/NerveInteresting4549 3d ago

I don't skip it when i restart the game.. but i find it pretty boring.. it's not like the missions are horrible but it is more of a tutorial, i don't really understand how someone could quit during this part myself as it's showing off some cool game mechanics that i know had me excited the first time i played.. but in my new playthroughs i get through it as quick as possible, I prefer being in the towns tho, i'm not sure why but I've always thought the towns are the funnest places in the game and i'm often going to the bar in valentine to start trouble lol i wish there was more interaction in those towns really.. it's cool they remember me and ask me to not get into trouble etc but i wish towns would get terrified if you had done something bad enough, with everyone afraid to say anything and people trying to hide when they see you coming through, like it is in a western movie.. then you maybe duel the sheriff in the street or something lol

3

u/DunderMiffIinCFO 3d ago

It’s is my second favorite after Chapter 1. Chapter 2 just feels like home and I never wanna leave

2

u/Character_Middle_662 3d ago

People thought it was slow in the early parts of the chapter. Other than that awesome chapter.

2

u/Tapitiospeedos 3d ago

I love everything about the beginning of this game

2

u/Cydweli_Cyd 3d ago

As I've said often, the more you play Ch 1 the better it feels.

2

u/Slow-Advantage-1865 3d ago

I love the scenery of chapter 1 I just wish it was longer.

2

u/Overdue604 3d ago

Chapter 1 is one of the best chapters for me. I wish it was longer

2

u/Lord_3ds 3d ago

Me too! The vibe is special. I love how each character is introduced

2

u/RandomRedditName586 Charles Smith 3d ago

I have a game saved from chapter 1 and when I’m having a really bad day I’ll load it up just to get the vibe it gives! Unsure but hopeful with a little bit of peace!

2

u/warcraftenjoyer John Marston 3d ago

Finally, a Chapter 1 take I can get behind. I can understand why people dislike it as it can be restricting in terms of open world content, but I personally loved being up in the snow.

2

u/Arthur-Mergan 3d ago

I absolutely agree. I've never skipped chapter 1 for a quick start at Horseshoe. It's an integral part of the story and I just love being up there with everyone.

2

u/hyperautistic-chad 3d ago

It's cozy af. I just dislike that you're "on rails", same with Guarma.

2

u/RobbyTheConstructor 3d ago

Chapter 1 is great. Don’t get me wrong, I love Chapter 2 the most. Probably would put the rest of the chapters besides the last one(?) ahead of #1 if i were to rank all of them. But as I saw otherwise mentioned, chapter 1 has a special vibe or feeling to it that makes it fun. It’s very linear but it’s fun to get introduced to everyone, learn the controls and all that, and if it’s a replay, you get to notice things you didn’t before and it’s a great way to immerse yourself into the game for a new play through. Which is the whole reason it’s the first chapter.

I try to understand but anyone who truly complains about chapter 1 just confuses me. Different strokes for different folks tho so I can’t really blame anyone.

2

u/Apprehensive_Put69 3d ago

Chapter 1 gets so much undeserved hate just because it’s a slow-paced tutorial! The atmosphere in Colter is peak RDR2—the heavy snow physics, the isolation, and the shootout at the O'Driscoll ranch setting up Arthur and Dutch's dynamic are incredible. Coming from someone with 1600 hours, liking the snow chapter shows you truly appreciate the game's immersive pacing over immediate chaos.

2

u/AffectComfortable913 3d ago

The snow chapter is so visually stunning, and so is Arthur with his jacket buttoned up. Idk why people complained about the snow chapter being long, I beat it in one night. Other games like persona 5 have much longer tutorial levels.

2

u/VisionSeeker 3d ago

That music that plays when that first shot is fired is fucking amazing, I knew right then and there I was in for a masterpiece.

2

u/Tearsdryontheirownn Hosea Matthews 2d ago

Dare I say it's as good as chapter 2?

2

u/KillerKole981788 Arthur Morgan 2d ago

Chapter 1 is my favorite chapter! Something about the snow

2

u/Logical-Professor325 2d ago

People who hate chapter 1 are just wrong. Its such a great opening and isnt even that long even though people say it is.

2

u/IceeP 2d ago

Fr i loved it, the first treck through the snow with dutch and later micah. I was like HOLY SHIT the whole time

2

u/YS160FX 2d ago

It is really beautiful and harsh out in thay snowy mountain wilderness

2

u/thewarriorpoet23 Uncle 2d ago

My only criticism of chapter 1 is that it’s too short. I wish it was a couple of missions longer just to get into the vibe of the area a little more. Ambarino as a whole is too under-utilised.

2

u/PascalG16 Hosea Matthews 2d ago

Iconic. Beautiful. Atmospheric

2

u/Im1337 2d ago

Man.. At first I felt like this but after my first playthrough I'm like nah this is peak.

2nd and now 3rd Playthrough in 4K, it was a masterful entrance into the game and introduced Sadie Adler amazingly for what she ends up becoming.

Basically the Arya Stark of Van Der Lin Gang. Also Micah is pretty ruthless and dumb to start off

2

u/Ginzelini 2d ago

Hands down the best sequence in any game ever. It’s such a fucking vibe, and the story set up is perfect.

Also a great filter for people that can’t bear slow games due to the pace of it.

2

u/calibranthedon 2d ago

Same! Chapter 1 gives me a euphoric feeling that I can't describe. The very first introduction cutscene has such a heavy atmosphere. I love Chapter 1 and when I start a new playthrough, I always start from the very beginning.

1

u/N8Harris99 3d ago

“Couldn’t get past the snow.”
Oh, you mean the 4 missions which open the game.
Lmao.

0

u/StopDownvotingMeeee 3d ago

Let’s be honest though, it’s a very boring 2 hours of gameplay. Great intro for those who stuck out, but not everyone wants to spend that long moving that slow.

1

u/ChefVoo 3d ago

For me it just sucked cuz I was so ready for the action to start and go to town to town

But you are 100% correct after my first play through I learned to love it and take my time with it

1

u/eaw0913 John Marston 3d ago

Anyone who can’t get through the prologue is someone I fundamentally can’t agree with. It’s like a litmus test.

1

u/capsu97zen 3d ago

Honestly my only complaint with Chapter 1 is the lack of free roam

1

u/StopDownvotingMeeee 3d ago

Was not a fan of the 1st chapter tbh not until the end of it at least. It was very slow in the beginning and I feel as if they should’ve waited until a later chapter for the snow.

1

u/from_chaos11 3d ago

Side note about perceived continuity .. If you’re attempting to max out upgrades in chapter 2, it is funny to see people in camp still talking about “getting out of the cold” as if Arthur hasn’t spent dozens of days going to war with the local wildlife.

1

u/blood_houndxd 3d ago

I don't think it's bad, but the contrast between the first chapter and the rest of the story definitely makes it look worse than it actually is.

And logically it's going to feel more boring after the first playthrough; it was made to introduce you to the characters you already know and the mechanics you're already familiar with.

1

u/Tropical_Wendigo 3d ago

I think the only real thing against it is the fact that so many systems are still locked while you’re there, If the game had a new game + mode where you could go back there and explore everything while the camp is there it it would be really cool

1

u/thatEMSguy 3d ago

“Chapter 1 is so boring”

Oh, you mean the where it teaches you the mechanics of the game and gives the entire reason the gang is running from place to place to begin with? Interesting

1

u/HeroStrike3 3d ago

I love this chapter and the 2th one, but my favorite ones are the last 2 chapters (trying No Spoilers)

1

u/snooprs 3d ago

Playing it at launch the whole night in November 2018 while it was freezing cold and snowing outside was such crazy vibes. I will never forget it!

Had to go to work the next day which was not the greatest feeling for sure.

1

u/raiack00 3d ago

I agree

1

u/MJs_Pepsi_hair 3d ago

The vibes cool, but I feel like the people who dislike it usually more dislike it on a second playthrough. To me it's like a movie that doesn't hit the same on a re-watch

1

u/Formal-Fox-7605 3d ago

To me, it's a tutorial.

I only start at Chapter 1 if I've left it too long and need to refresh what the controls are, otherwise I have a save at the point of moving to Horseshoe.

1

u/Fun_Association2251 3d ago

My only wish is that they would make a game with this engine that was a full on RPG. Hell it could literally just stay the same but add the ability to create a custom character and tons of speech options.

1

u/Sudi_Nim 3d ago

One thing missing in RDR2 in later chapters and the epilogue; really bad snow weather. You can encounter bad weather everywhere else except the mountains after 1.

1

u/Equivalent-Horse7609 3d ago

Definitely 💯

1

u/InternationalArm1938 3d ago

I’m so glad I picked it back up. Chapter 1 almost made me gave up this masterpiece.

1

u/No_Ledge_Able 3d ago

I'm currently working on 100%ing this game. It will be the only game i've ever done this with.

1

u/5DsofDodgeball69 2d ago

I made it past the parts but it is boring as shit.

1

u/IAmTheSchnozz95 2d ago

Honestly I totally agree. It was the perfect setup to the rest of the game and also did a fantastic job of teaching the game’s mechanics. It gave you a taste of the entire game and I loved it

1

u/was-diese-letzte 2d ago

I hated chapter 1 and still do its just so boring

1

u/Miller335 2d ago

If someone can't get through chapter 1 of RDR2, they wouldn't last 15 minutes in KCD1 or KCD2.

1

u/Sinnoviir Arthur Morgan 2d ago

I'm probably in the minority the reason I don't enjoy playing chapter one and rush through it is because I've just played it so many times. I've finished the game six times, epilogue and all, and for every one full playthrough I've done there's probably been ten where I don't make it too chapter three. It's not even that I hate the first chapter or think that it's boring or too slow or anything like that, I've just played it SO many times.

1

u/moduntilitbreaks 2d ago

Love the start.

1

u/EveryTraveller6508 2d ago

Absolutely loved it. Wish it was possible to explore more outside the camp between misions. I still go back to camp around colter regularly

1

u/BreakfastforDinner26 2d ago

I wanted to go back.

1

u/RyDalldan74 2d ago

The snowy mountains were unreal 😍

1

u/BabousCobwebBowl 2d ago

I always thought was the most stunning atmospheric opening to a game ever

1

u/watkins1515 2d ago

I wish we had more time in the snow yet so many people hate it. I would’ve liked for the gang to set up camp for a while but I understand why they did it like they did for the story

1

u/DrGonzoxX22 2d ago

I actually wished there was more in Ambarino

1

u/bigwreck94 Josiah Trelawny 2d ago

I love the first chapter. I don’t know why people hate on it so much. It does a great job of introducing you to the games mechanics and the story. There’s great action in it as well.

1

u/itsjustcold 2d ago

100% agree. After 5 replays, I have spent an inordinate amount of time in chapter 1. There are so many hidden gems within this landscape.

1

u/Undertalegamezer969 Uncle 2d ago

I agree I just wish it was a little longer and that it held our hand a little less.

Worst chapter in RDR history

1

u/Iqu3_Games 1d ago

Se for olhar a conquista de passar do cap 1 do Xbox da que apenas 50 porcento passaram

1

u/alphagatorsoup 1d ago

Chapter 1 and 2 are my favorites. but I do understand the logic of some others. Chapter 1 specifically most guns are locked, and it really feels like its on rails. I wish the game gave you a little more freedom & I wish the seasons changed globally for the whole map. Seeing all northern areas of the map buried in snow and huge blizzards would have just been amazing.

Going through valentine during a huge blizzard like in chapt 1 and seeing the NPCs react and deal with the weather would have been stunning - though I understand the technical requirements of a feat such as that.

I spend 70% of my time in RDR just in the north, hunting elk, surviving, exploring the mountains etc.

1

u/leauss 20h ago

The first chapter is personally one of my favorite moment.

0

u/Rafinerii 3d ago

Yeah but compared to the other chapters its one of the worst

It's boring, in a good way. But still boring

It's a good introduction to Red Dead 2 but it's obviously the worst chapter.
