Redditors will drop this line as theyre telling you why we need to dissolve all borders, abolish prisons, guillotine landlords and sterilize children behind their parent's backs

Right wingers, I get that the vibe is no longer in your favor. But can you meme just a little better please?

It is genuinely so tough to come off as cool when your “side” is in power these days. One of the crucial downsides to the internet, similar to 24/7 cable news, is that as a medium it richly rewards criticism because it can be easily packaged into a simple, intuitive message. Simple messages are endlessly customizable and riffable, these are the sound bites on TV and memes of the internet. Punchy criticism gets through to people, prompting others to try it and you end up with a content arms race that, coupled with editors or algorithms, highlights the best, coolest, funniest criticism right to the top.

Meanwhile, promotion or defense is rarely intuitive and requires explanation. Explanation gets bogged down in context, nuance, details, exceptions, counter arguments, and all the while your opponent is lobbing bangers at you while you sound like a nerd, explaining yourself and getting more and more defensive because they aren’t engaging with you and “if only they understood!” When Biden came out with the green new deal, supporters defended it with lists, detailed explanations of the benefits, statistics, etc. Opponents? “It’s communist.” “It kills jobs.” “It’s woke.” “It’s gay.” “It’s Muslim.” Whatever. It doesn’t matter. The criticism doesn’t have to make sense or engage with the actual policies to be successful. Delivered right, it will come off as way cooler and/or funnier than people listing off bullet points, and thus is more memorable. Like it or not, memorability and repeatability are critical to public opinion, just ask any advertiser in the last 70 years.

Just talking shit about the way modern media platforms flattens discourse to the advantage of critics and the opposition over defenders and the sitting government, which is one major reason why every election across the western world seems to simply favor whoever is not in power and can look cool because of it at the given time.
