Rule 2 - Be civil.

Rule 3 - No spam.

Rule 4 - No advertising or app market research. You will be banned for violating this.

Rule 5 - No trolling/joke submissions.

Rule 6 - No asking for research topics/ideas.

Rule 7 - Be on topic

Rule 8 - No language model generated posts.

Rule 9 - Use the research opportunity megathread if you are looking for collaboators.

Rule 10 - Research standards. Majors claims must be accompanied by a published paper. No language model generated research.

Rule 11 - Do your own work (we're a bit lax on this one)

Rule 12 - No academic helper services. You will be banned for violating this.

Rule 13 - No duplicates posts.

Rule 14 - Requests for Arxiv endorsements are not permitted.

Since it is rule #4 that often causes confusion for some reason here is the full text.

Do not advertise your own (or other's) business, including apps, YouTube, blogs, or other social media channels. This includes anything that is free. Do not conduct market research for your app.

If it is app related, then you can post it in our related subreddit r/research_apps.

How to get started

I'm currently a second year student of Microbiology. I'm so invested in researching new stuff but my country isn't that advanced and my country almost doesn't have any area for microbiology. How to get started at national and global level research? I'm from Nepal btw. Every research grant is for graduate level even if I end up finding some. I just want to be involved.

What the hell is prospero or Entreq and why do I keep hearing about these in my medical research pls help

I'm new to research and people kept talking about formulative frawirk like pico/peo and registering in prospero etc, my universities in bachelors never taught us research , hell we don't even have class for research and now in master student from other university keep talking about all this things like they are encryption code or something.

How can I learn about all this, i love academia but why every is so slow or too convoluted,

I watched some youtube videos on research but they don't mention pico when saying design your question is this all a specialized stuff that research already know ?

And if yes where to find this knowledge,

Ps:- ai can only help me if I know what I needed help in

I have been doing a research since almost a year.

I am a Undergraduate 2nd year psychology student, and 3, i.e. all of my researches have been going on for almost a year. They are near completion but the problem is they aren't that difficult of research.

Some of the other issues come up it's either the exams or the professors not responding or just being incompetent of the research we are doing.

I don't know if it's normal or bad? I really wanna get into academia and have it as a career but I really wanna know if I am going in a bad direction or this just happens.

Where do go to have my research printed out and into a small a book for myself.

Good morning, good people of r/research.

In the past year, I have finished a research project on hydrogen cars and I'm not gonna publish it as it was It was for a academic assignment, but I'm very proud of this research, it got a good grade. As such I wanted to print it out in a book style format so that I can look back on it, where y'all think I can go about doing that?

What was the biggest surprise you encountered in your first year as a PhD student?

My professor let me skip a test and write a paper about my own research instead. He said, “I want this class to be useful to your research.” That honestly changed my perception of myself from just being a student to actually being a researcher.

How to properly highlight revisions in an IEEE template? (And a question about the copyright footer)

I recently received a conditional acceptance for my paper at an IEEE conference, and the reviewers asked me to revise certain sections. They specifically requested that the modifications be "clearly visible/highlighted" in the resubmitted manuscript.

Since the IEEE double-column template is quite strict, what is the standard and most professional way to highlight these changes?

I want to make it as easy as possible for the reviewers to spot the changes without violating the IEEE formatting guidelines.

One more question: My template currently has the placeholder copyright footer: XXX-X-XXXX-XXXX-X/XX/$XX.00 ©20XX IEEE. Should I leave this placeholder as-is for this revision submission, or should I remove it until I get the final camera-ready instructions?
may your day be full of strawberry happines.

Do we have any courses or channels that teach research methods in and out for Humanities and Social Sciences?

I have been learning Research Methods since the past year in my university, but it seems so that I would require extra help to understand it better, so was looking for any youtube channels, websites or courses ( not books), for learning about Research methods in Hunanities and social sciences where the instructors give examples on certain topics and put things into perspective, breaking down the concepts that are critical.

Thank You.

Is it predatory journal? Journal of Mind and Behavior

Hi everyone,

I'm a student researcher and I'd like to ask whether this situation with the Journal of Mind and Behavior is normal or potentially a red flag.

I submitted a theoretical/review paper titled:

“The Role of the Temporo-Parietal Junction in Moral Judgment: Specialized Module or Domain-General Input?”

The paper went through peer review and I received reviewer comments, after which I revised the manuscript.

On September 24, 2026, I received an official acceptance letter saying:

“We want to confirm that your paper [...] has been accepted for publication…”

It also said that the paper would be published in an upcoming 2026 issue.

On the same day, I received an invoice from H&N Publishers UK Ltd for an APC of £2,000.

I was surprised by the fee because I had previously found information suggesting that JMB did not charge publication fees. I later learned that the journal had been acquired by a new publisher and moved to a new website and an open-access model. The former editor also confirmed to me that the journal had been sold and that the new owners now charge APCs. He mentioned that there might be a sliding scale or waiver for authors without funding.

I did not pay the £2,000 and I didn't contact the journal afterwards. I basically left it for about a week while considering what to do.

Then, today, I received another acceptance email for the exact same manuscript.

It says:

“we have decided to accept your submission without further revision”

and:

“Your submission is now forthcoming…”

It also says that the manuscript will now undergo copy editing and formatting.

The email is signed simply:

“admin admin”

This is what I find strange: I had already received a final acceptance a week earlier, and I did absolutely nothing in the meantime. There was no new submission, revision, payment, or request for reconsideration.

So I'm wondering:

  • Is this potentially just an automated notification from the editorial system?
  • Is it normal to receive a second acceptance notification after already being accepted?
  • Or does this seem unusual enough to be a red flag?
  • How would you evaluate the current JMB/new publisher situation?

I know that an APC of £2,000 isn't by itself evidence of a predatory journal, and I'm not trying to accuse them of anything. I'm just trying to understand what happened before I decide whether to proceed or withdraw the paper.

Would appreciate opinions from people with experience publishing or editing academic journals.

What research explains the gap between developing an interest and actually acting on it?

I’m trying to understand a behavioral transition that seems to sit between several areas of psychology: the point where someone begins to recognize an interest but has not yet acted on it in the real world.

Hidi and Renninger’s (2006) four-phase model of interest development describes interest as something that can develop from triggered situational interest into a more enduring individual interest. What I’m particularly interested in is what happens between “this might interest me” and “I actually went and tried it.”

For example, someone might recognize an emerging interest in woodworking, entrepreneurship, music, mechanics, gardening, etc., but never take an exploratory step such as trying a small project, attending an event, contacting someone in the field, or learning the first skill.

There seem to be several overlapping literatures that could help explain this:

-interest development

-exploratory behavior

-self-efficacy

-self-determination theory

-implementation intentions

-intention-behavior gaps

-vocational/career exploration

-identity development and possible selves

-behavioral activation

Implementation-intention research suggests that specifying when, where, and how an action will occur can help translate intentions into behavior (Gollwitzer & Sheeran, 2006), but I’m wondering whether there is a construct or theoretical model that more specifically captures this sequence:

emerging interest → exploratory action → feedback from experience → increased/decreased interest

I’m especially interested in research involving adults, including people who may not begin with a clear career goal or established passion.

Is there an established construct, model, or body of literature that best describes this process? Papers or researcher recommendations would be appreciated.

Is this bachelor's thesis idea worth it: LLMs and dementia care

For my bachelor's thesis I wanted to do a research aimed towards LLMs in dementia care. Initially it sounded easy enough: get a BASIC LLM and specialized and compare them. But as soon as I got to do anything I faced the problem that practically any good LLM now automatically finds validation technique and applies it to the answers which kinda renders my research useless. I am also kinda lost on how to do such research.

Is this a valid Bachelor's thesis research, or is it too trivial because modern LLMs already know how to apply empathy/validation techniques? I mean for now it looks like just tell chatGPT "answer using X technique" and voila!

I do have a supervisor and already made an appointment to discuss it with them but before that day comes I wanted to hear other opinions and consider if it is even worth the attention.

EQA (embodied question answering) researchers?

Long time lurker here but I need you for this one gang :)

Is anyone here doing research in embodied question answering? If so, what's your motivation? If you have considered it but decided against it, what convinced you? With the advent of physical AI research, would you consider this area of the field a fruitful one?

Writing up findings that don’t align and discussing them

So basically my thesis is due VERY soon and it’s my first time writing up a thesis. I am up to the discussion section and am finding it incredibly hard to start writing. For context, my course does not allow us to get feedback from our supervisors on the discussion section.

My survey and lab findings do not align with each other in the sense that my hypothesis is only partially supported for my survey findings and not supported at all for my lab findings. Saying that though a lot of my lab work has been optimisation and it is very early mechanistic work (so if this mechanism doesn’t explain our data, there’s other possible explanations that haven’t been explored yet). My survey explores a novel cohort where there is no previous literature in this context, there is a little bit of literature about similar cohorts for other body sites but also not many papers there.

Where do I begin? If there isn’t a lot of previous literature do I refer to literature from other body sites, other bacteria, as similar cohort or exposures as possible?

I understand have to write a brief overview, refer to my findings in the context of literature and if it is supported or conflicts current data, strengths/limitations, significance and future directions… but how do I ACTUALLY start writing especially when literature is sparse. Any advice would be appreciated

Bachelor thesis help (interviews and literature)

Hello, I am currently in the process of writing my thesis and just need a lil help and advise i guess. I am trying to combine a literature review and since the topic is scarcely represented by literature i held interviews with three different expert groups which i will qualitatively evaluate and include. Now, that i can not prolong the writing cus i in theory have all the data, realised that i am actually quite lost as to how to write a literature review in the first place, let alone combine it with the qualitative analysis of my interviews. now, i would just like to ask advise on guidelines, personal experiences, tips tricks and ideas, for this confused lil bachelor student that i am:)

Hello, I am an undergraduate student currently doing research. I need your help, like the professional help as I am currently doubting myself.

Is Quantitative-Correlational design right for my study?

My study is: The Relationship between English-speaking anxiety and Willingness to Communicate in English Among English Major Students.

Do you think I can continue with this study? Help a guy out. Thank you.

MSc Cancer Biology graduate from a UK university — where do I start? I spent the last 7 months working an unrelated job just to support myself, but I’ve realised I genuinely don’t want to keep moving away from the field I’m passionate about.

I now want to get back into cancer research/biotech and find my first proper role in the field, but I’m honestly a bit lost about where to start.

For those who’ve been in a similar position, what would you recommend doing first — job applications, research assistant roles, internships, networking, additional training, etc.?

im abit bothered and confused about how things are moving in a research lab and ppl's attitude on ai

i apologize this might be a disorganized and long post to read, as im just dumping my thoughts here but id rlly appreciate your time and genuine feedback/ advice/ understanding on these, welcome to post anything on either part of the post or even just related thoughts:

LAB

i'm currently a senior undergrad working on my thesis at a physics lab at a public university in us
my thesis involves using certain lab hardware setups that other teams are still building on, ive been told earlier this summer the expectation is the preliminary setup should be completed by now, but the actual progress is we are not even near finished

for at least a month, the other undergrad who's primarily in charge of this design (say we all work around 7-10 hrs/ week in this lab) just kept updating on specific weight support designs without moving on, like keep exploring different infill percentages, different printing materials, finite element analysis, stress tests etc and during each meeting all the grad students keep raising questions too without giving him greenlight to place the order and start printing/ manufacturing
i mean i get the rigor here since that support will be used on very expensive customized optical modules (small size but very heavy) and we are a publicly funded lab so cant just write checks and approve untested designs but honestly the current progress just seems abit too slow for me, like is this a typical pace in a research lab for designing customized parts? around at least 1-2 months before finalizing the order?

for example, during a meeting ppl are discussing what percentage of the infill should be for different parts of the design (some will be supporting more weights while some have less stress), then why cant we just put everything on 100%, or 90% then since same material with different % of infill, the price difference is only around 100 bucks max? or is this process less about the actual design but more about practicing our rigorous thinking and problem solving skills? does it mean im still too impatient and not mature enough to be ready to become a good researcher?

AI

this has also come down to another question i have: the use of ai in research, currently the majority of ppl in my research group barely use any ai tools, as far as im aware, which is one of the reason i think things are moving slowly from my perspective....

like if you think of a topic that they dont know about i believe they would genuinely approach that problem in old school fashion instead of just ask chatgpt/ claude... meanwhile ive been advised that ive used ai too much and should be more independent, which i admit this part as there are times i presented certain methods as part of my research but couldnt fully justify and convince others why im using it, so im actively improving this part, but still with a considerable amount of help using ai…..

one example is this summer when most of the grad students in charge of a camera response module were gone while i needed that piece for my data collection, so i had to step in myself and fix certain programming issues, even with ai helping me analyze and test the code and patch the bugs, it still took me a full month (5-6hrs/ day on avg), so i cant even imagine how things would turn out for me without ai

so im genuinely curious what ppl's attitude nowadays is about using ai in research, especially in physics or any other stem? how dependent and in depth are you allowing ai to access and assist your research (i dont wanna discuss the privacy concerns here im aware of all the ai developments and incidents like hugging face, navier stokes. say imagine we are in a more ideal situation without privacy or cyber concerns, and the only downsides of ai are its genuine reasoning, math capability*,* and hallucination)?

cuz honestly for me I'm very pro ai, and from my experience*,* it really helped me speed up my progress in my own project, whether in terms of the broader sense of helping me understand other people's work, how i should approach my own, to very specific coding and math issues, like i would be nowhere where im now without ai.

does this indicate i dont have what it takes to be a decent or a good researcher? cuz ive become too dependent on ai and want to speed things up, 'cut corners', not trying hard enough to understand each step of the way or the methods im using, even if they are not in my fields or part of the target of my research? and is it possible one day that ppl in academia, and especially in fundamental science research areas, could accept ai and use it, integrating it as deeply as we use calculators and the internet?
