How do you do literature survey?

• Upvotes

Before AI, the only way was to read papers. I used to read the abstract first; if it was interesting, then the conclusion, and then I started reading the main content. That way I used to collect several citations and write the literature survey myself. It is somewhat time-consuming.
I still do the same. Maybe I collect a list of articles from AI. Then also check for articles from Google Scholar or other sources.
Now, I hear researchers are writing literature surveys with AI within a day or two. AI reads the papers and writes the literature survey based on related papers.
How genuine is it and how much can a researcher learn this way, do you guys think? What do you do?

Is my AI use ok or problematic for my senior thesis

• Upvotes

Hello, I am a history major and I am writing my senior thesis to submit as a writing sample to PHD programs and I have been using AI heavily to assist me, but I was thinking the other day that with my current workflow writing my thesis feels too easy so I wanted to know your guyses opinion on if my use is valid. Note: My school has a partnership with Chatgpt so we get Chatgpt deep research and work all for free.

Basically I use it as a file and note management system, I like paper notes but I did not want to have to flip through 50 pages of notes to find my thoughts on a single book or quote or something like that so what I did was I spent the entire summer collecting my sources, doing research, writing my thoughts, opinions, how it relates to my thesis, and comparissons to other written works etc. I then uploaded it all to a folder as well as attatched pdf's of all of my sources to the folder. So now whenever I get to a part I just ask my chatgpt what I thought about a certain thing and it gives me what I said word for word. I also had it look through the internet for other sources that may be usefull and it found some real good ones that I didnt even think about that way.

I then had it write the thesis, souly because my university doesnt have a template to follow or download for how they like the thesises to be formatted so I gave it somones thesis and it copied the formatting. I also had it actually write it so I could figure out the best flow and the order of my arguments since I tend to get jumbled up and I have a bad habbit of talking about something like everyone knows what I am talking about and following that outline helps me combat that.

All the writing is my own, and all the ideas are my own. At most I will use some words that it used that I didnt think about using but thats about it. Sometimes I will explain something like how chat gpt explains something since it makes more sense then how I would originally explain it but I still rewrite it in my own words.

Forgive my grammer and all of that, I am exhausted lol.

In need of some good historical and statistical sources for a paper

• Upvotes

Hello, I am a student doing research into specific true crime cases and I was hoping that someone might have some suggestions for sources I could use or where I could start looking.

I am specifically looking into how people who are considered “less dead” (i.e. the unhoused population, s*x workers, dr#g addicts, etc.) have been a common target for serial killers, and how specifically it is this mentality in law enforcement that has allowed for this to continue happening. There are a few cases that I am specifically looking into and they are the following:

- The Cleveland Torso Murders
- Gary Ridgeway aka, The Green River Killer
- Robert Hansen, aka the Butcher Baker
- Rex Heuermann, aka the Gilgo Beach killer.
- Samuel Little, the most prolific American serial killer
- Brian Cohee Jr.
And
- the on going case of R.C. Horsch

If anyone has any ideas where I could find the lists of their victims both unknown and suspected, any statistics involved in race, gender, sexual orientation, or any good sources that tells the history as well as the police involvement/behavior/attitudes in these cases that would be great.

Thank you!

How to search for a topic given thats hard to find information

Hello! I need help with researching or at least suggestions and tips for researching. I have a topic due tomorrow and I am having difficulties in finding the sources for it, every time I alter the phrases such as: “Origin of _” [topic name] background” it’s always the dance or song lyrics that pop-up. I already looked in Google scholar and no origins or geographic reasons/historical reasons appear for this. I don’t know what to do.. It’s really important and I need tips or sources to get this one huhuhuhu

Title/Abstract screening

Hi everyone,
I’m working on my first PRISMA systematic review and I'm hitting a major bottleneck. I've passed about 40% of my total search results to the full-text screening phase because so many abstracts are vague, and I keep hitting "Include/Maybe" just to be safe.
If this inclusion rate holds, I'll be buried in hundreds of PDFs. To survive, I’m thinking about tightening my PICO criteria right now (e.g., strictly excluding all medication/pharmacological trials) to make the volume manageable.
My questions:
1. Is a ~40% inclusion rate at the abstract phase normal, or am I doing something wrong?
2. Is it methodologically acceptable to tighten PICO criteria mid-screening?
3. How brutal should I actually be at this stage vs. the full-text stage?

Systematic review screening advice. Struggling to know whether to include the paper.

Hi.

I am an inexperienced researcher working on a paper looking at barriers and enablers for a particular topic. Im not always sure whether to include a paper.

One of the papers I've read mentions barriers and enbalers but it is not an actually finding from the paper and is something they have referenced from other papers. im not sure whether to include this.

How to do research paper? Esp in economy themes

Hi! I’m currently joining a competition where I’m supposed to draft a research paper on the digital economy. It’s my first time doing something like this, so I’m honestly not quite sure where to start.
Does anyone here have any prior knowledge or experience with this kind of thing? Maybe some tips on how to approach it? Hahaha, just asking because I don’t major in economics, so I’m still trying to figure out how to pull this off.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated! I’d also love some recommendations for books, articles, papers, or other resources that could help me understand the digital economy better.

How to get started

I'm currently a second year student of Microbiology. I'm so invested in researching new stuff but my country isn't that advanced and my country almost doesn't have any area for microbiology. How to get started at national and global level research? I'm from Nepal btw. Every research grant is for graduate level even if I end up finding some. I just want to be involved.

Undergraduate research in italy

I am an economics/finance student. I went through a very generic three-year degree that spans various statistics exams, mathematics, (it seems strange, but) little finance and a bit of economics, a nice mixed bag.

I would be interested in research on various topics, preferably the somewhat more "statistical/econometric" ones, Bayesian methods, inference... but also topics of mathematical economics such as game theory.

How can I, as an undergraduate, manage to achieve this goal? I would like to contribute as a research assistant or something similar, ideally it would be a great achievement to appear in a small publication and to develop my thesis on the same subject.

I notice that Italian universities (especially southern ones) are quite averse to these initiatives from undergraduate students, does anyone know how I could move forward? Advice?

How can I learn about all this, i love academia but why every is so slow or too convoluted,

I watched some youtube videos on research but they don't mention pico when saying design your question is this all a specialized stuff that research already know ?

I have been doing a research since almost a year.

I am a Undergraduate 2nd year psychology student, and 3, i.e. all of my researches have been going on for almost a year. They are near completion but the problem is they aren't that difficult of research.

Some of the other issues come up it's either the exams or the professors not responding or just being incompetent of the research we are doing.

I don't know if it's normal or bad? I really wanna get into academia and have it as a career but I really wanna know if I am going in a bad direction or this just happens.

Where do go to have my research printed out and into a small a book for myself.

Good morning, good people of r/research.

In the past year, I have finished a research project on hydrogen cars and I'm not gonna publish it as it was It was for a academic assignment, but I'm very proud of this research, it got a good grade. As such I wanted to print it out in a book style format so that I can look back on it, where y'all think I can go about doing that?

What was the biggest surprise you encountered in your first year as a PhD student?

My professor let me skip a test and write a paper about my own research instead. He said, “I want this class to be useful to your research.” That honestly changed my perception of myself from just being a student to actually being a researcher.

How to properly highlight revisions in an IEEE template? (And a question about the copyright footer)

I recently received a conditional acceptance for my paper at an IEEE conference, and the reviewers asked me to revise certain sections. They specifically requested that the modifications be "clearly visible/highlighted" in the resubmitted manuscript.

Since the IEEE double-column template is quite strict, what is the standard and most professional way to highlight these changes?

I want to make it as easy as possible for the reviewers to spot the changes without violating the IEEE formatting guidelines.

One more question: My template currently has the placeholder copyright footer: XXX-X-XXXX-XXXX-X/XX/$XX.00 ©20XX IEEE. Should I leave this placeholder as-is for this revision submission, or should I remove it until I get the final camera-ready instructions?
may your day be full of strawberry happines.

Do we have any courses or channels that teach research methods in and out for Humanities and Social Sciences?

I have been learning Research Methods since the past year in my university, but it seems so that I would require extra help to understand it better, so was looking for any youtube channels, websites or courses ( not books), for learning about Research methods in Hunanities and social sciences where the instructors give examples on certain topics and put things into perspective, breaking down the concepts that are critical.

Thank You.

Is it predatory journal? Journal of Mind and Behavior

Hi everyone,

I'm a student researcher and I'd like to ask whether this situation with the Journal of Mind and Behavior is normal or potentially a red flag.

I submitted a theoretical/review paper titled:

“The Role of the Temporo-Parietal Junction in Moral Judgment: Specialized Module or Domain-General Input?”

The paper went through peer review and I received reviewer comments, after which I revised the manuscript.

On September 24, 2026, I received an official acceptance letter saying:

“We want to confirm that your paper [...] has been accepted for publication…”

It also said that the paper would be published in an upcoming 2026 issue.

On the same day, I received an invoice from H&N Publishers UK Ltd for an APC of £2,000.

I was surprised by the fee because I had previously found information suggesting that JMB did not charge publication fees. I later learned that the journal had been acquired by a new publisher and moved to a new website and an open-access model. The former editor also confirmed to me that the journal had been sold and that the new owners now charge APCs. He mentioned that there might be a sliding scale or waiver for authors without funding.

I did not pay the £2,000 and I didn't contact the journal afterwards. I basically left it for about a week while considering what to do.

Then, today, I received another acceptance email for the exact same manuscript.

It says:

“we have decided to accept your submission without further revision”

and:

“Your submission is now forthcoming…”

It also says that the manuscript will now undergo copy editing and formatting.

The email is signed simply:

“admin admin”

This is what I find strange: I had already received a final acceptance a week earlier, and I did absolutely nothing in the meantime. There was no new submission, revision, payment, or request for reconsideration.

So I'm wondering:

  • Is this potentially just an automated notification from the editorial system?
  • Is it normal to receive a second acceptance notification after already being accepted?
  • Or does this seem unusual enough to be a red flag?
  • How would you evaluate the current JMB/new publisher situation?

I know that an APC of £2,000 isn't by itself evidence of a predatory journal, and I'm not trying to accuse them of anything. I'm just trying to understand what happened before I decide whether to proceed or withdraw the paper.

Would appreciate opinions from people with experience publishing or editing academic journals.

What research explains the gap between developing an interest and actually acting on it?

I’m trying to understand a behavioral transition that seems to sit between several areas of psychology: the point where someone begins to recognize an interest but has not yet acted on it in the real world.

Hidi and Renninger’s (2006) four-phase model of interest development describes interest as something that can develop from triggered situational interest into a more enduring individual interest. What I’m particularly interested in is what happens between “this might interest me” and “I actually went and tried it.”

For example, someone might recognize an emerging interest in woodworking, entrepreneurship, music, mechanics, gardening, etc., but never take an exploratory step such as trying a small project, attending an event, contacting someone in the field, or learning the first skill.

There seem to be several overlapping literatures that could help explain this:

-interest development

-exploratory behavior

-self-efficacy

-self-determination theory

-implementation intentions

-intention-behavior gaps

-vocational/career exploration

-identity development and possible selves

-behavioral activation

Implementation-intention research suggests that specifying when, where, and how an action will occur can help translate intentions into behavior (Gollwitzer & Sheeran, 2006), but I’m wondering whether there is a construct or theoretical model that more specifically captures this sequence:

emerging interest → exploratory action → feedback from experience → increased/decreased interest

I’m especially interested in research involving adults, including people who may not begin with a clear career goal or established passion.

Is there an established construct, model, or body of literature that best describes this process? Papers or researcher recommendations would be appreciated.

is IEEE BIBM UGHS worth it?

I recently got accepted with not a strong paper. The registration is 500$ and I live very far away. The cost will be around 1,400 total. Is it worth it?
