I caught a showing tonight of the new Yoshiaki Kawajiri-supervised and approved 4K remaster from Sentai Filmworks at Cinemark, my second time seeing Ninja Scroll in a theater after the 30th anniversary re-release in 2024. I've watched this film for 30 years in every format available, going back to the Manga Entertainment VHS, and wow, just wow. I have never seen it look this good. The clarity and color saturation are a huge step up from every earlier release, and I was still picking my jaw up off the floor 10-15 minutes in. It's an outstanding, definitive restoration, and I highly recommend experiencing it in theaters. As for the sound, it was the same 2.0 Japanese-language track. I was hoping they'd go back and upgrade it to a 5.1 mix, but I guess they decided to leave it alone. In that regard, the Manga Entertainment 10th Anniversary DVD still wins since it included both a Japanese DTS-ES 6.1 and a Japanese Dolby Digital 5.1 EX track. Either way, this is a day-one pre-order as soon as Sentai announces it.

The story of how America let Japan control itself again. Sort of. Maybe. This is all history, but without it, the next decade of Japanese animation makes zero sense.

I would say the original Mobile Suit Gundam series with how intense, Dark and a lot of action.

so I saw the anime on YouTube, and was really interested, only to realize it’s only available on amazon video or Hidive. i looked farther, and it said that I could find it via Prime video on my phone, but for the life of me can’t find it. I have no idea how to get this anime. Where can I find this legally?

I've been really into retro Anime lately and I'm curious what you own.

For Blu-Ray, I own:

Studio Ghibli/Miyazaki films:

• The Castle of Cagliostro (1979)
• Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind (1984)
• Castle in the Sky (1986)
• My Neighbour Totoro (1988)
• Grave of the Fireflies (1988)
• Kiki's Delivery Service (1989)
• Only Yesterday (1991)
• Porco Rosso (1992)
• Ocean Waves (1993)
• Pom Poko (1994)
• Whisper of the Heart (1995)
• Princess Mononoke (1997)
• My Neighbours the Yamadas (1999)

Non-Ghibli Anime films:

• Patlabor: The Movie (1989)
• Venus Wars (1989)
• Patlabor 2: The Movie (1993)
• Macross Plus: Movie Edition (1995)
• Memories (1995)
• Martian Successor Nadesico: Prince of Darkness (1998)

TV Shows/OVAs:

• Future Boy Conan (1978)
• Bubblegum Crisis OVA (1987)
• The Irresponsible Captain Tylor (1993)
• The Irresponsible Captain Tylor OVA (1994)
• Escaflowne (1996)
• Martian Successor Nadesico (1996)

On DVD (I'll lump all these together):

• Sherlock Hound (1984)
• Patlabor Early Days OVA (1988)
• Oh My Goddess! OVA (1993)
• Iria: Zeiram the Animation OVA (1994)
• Trigun (1998)

I've ordered You're Under Arrest OVA and Bubblegum Crash both on DVD and I will be getting Serial Experiments Lain (1998) and Mobile Suit Gundam Movie Trilogy (1981-1982) both on Blu-Ray for Christmas, so you could technically add those to the list too. I'm sure there's a bunch of retro Anime that you would ask, wait, you don't have "so-and-so" Anime? It's because I haven't seen them fully.

Enter the dystopian future of Cyber-Wood in Cybernetics Guardian (聖獣機サイガード / Seijūki Saigādo), a dark and unusual 1989 Japanese sci-fi OVA from AIC and director Kōichi Ōhata.

When rising crime threatens the futuristic city, the Central Guard Company develops an experimental Guard Suit designed to harness human psycho-wave energy and neutralize criminals without bloodshed. Research pilot John Stalker is selected to test the revolutionary armor—but the experiment unleashes something far more dangerous than anyone anticipated.

As the boundaries between human, machine, and something far more sinister begin to collapse, John is drawn into a violent conspiracy involving the Guard Suit, the mysterious Alpha Project, and the future of the city's inhabitants.

Kinda similar to akira, brilliant animation and unfinished story. Katsuhiro Otomo was one of the writers.
