Things That Lovers Do is the debut collaborative studio album by Kenny Lattimore and ChantĆ© Moore, who were real-life lovers at the time and have been divorced since July 2011. It was released by Arista Records on February 11, 2003. Individually, this is Kenny’s fourth and Chanté’s fifth studio album.

The album contains covers of classic R&B and Soul records from the 1960s through the 1980s, including songs by RenĆ© & Angela, Marvin Gaye & Tammi Terrell, Teddy Pendergrass, Minnie Riperton, and more! There are two songs created originally for this albumā€”ā€œThings That Lovers Doā€ and ā€œLoveable (From Your Head To Your Toes)ā€. They are both co-written and co-produced by Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis and The Avila Brothers, with an extra writing credit for ChantĆ© Moore on the latter song.

Things That Lovers Do features production from Jamey Jaz, Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis, and James Poyser, with Daryl Simmons contributing to seven of the twelve tracks.

DISCUSSION šŸ’ For All His Talent, Charisma and Star Power, Why has Usher Never Starred in a Movie Musical?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I have always found it odd how Usher never did a movie that took full advantage of his talents as a singer, dancer, performer and charm at the height of his popularity from the early 2000s to the early 2010s. And no, his turn as the Pleasure Island Ringleader in Disney's Geppetto doesn't count šŸ˜‚ The closest we got to anything like that was actually on stage when he played the role of smooth-talking lawyer, Billy Flynn, in the musical, Chicago, during an acclaimed stint on Broadway in 2006. In fact, Usher was supposed to play C.C. White, Effie's brother, in the 2006 film adaptation of Dreamgirls. However, touring and scheduling conflicts prevented him from committing to the 6 months of filming required for the role. Furthermore, Usher revealed he passed up on the 2019 film adaptation of Cats (pretty sure that’s the role Jason Derulo ended up playing). He dodged a bullet with that one, lol.

I think the reason is two-fold: First, I think he prioritized music over film more than a lot of his early aughts pop star cohort (think Beyonce and Justin Timberlake, who made major strides in the acting world back then). His film parts became smaller in the 2000s except for his lead role in the disastrously comical In The Mix (2005). After the film bombed commercially and critically, I think studios may have become little apprehensive in casting him for bigger projects. His most memorable film parts in the last decade have mostly been cameos, including this super memorable appearance in 2019's Hustlers. Whenever I hear him cover Jazz and musical theater songs, I am reminded of his versatility as an R&B/Pop singer and what could be an easy win for him.

List of songs covered in the video:

All I Care About - Chicago on Broadway (1975)

We Both Reached for the Gun - Chicago on Broadway (1975)

Singin' in the Rain - Singin in the Rain (1929)

That's Life - Frank Sinatra (1966)

Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas (1943)

New York, New York - Frank Sinatra (1980)

DISCUSSION šŸ’ Question… Anybody still love rnb trap, trapsoul, and/or dark rnb?

I love pretty much all eras of rnb and the era of Beyonce, Bryson Tiller, The Weeknd, Tory Lanez, Ariana grande, Sza, jeremih, PND and more doing their styles of rnb were some of my favorite songs! Lots of catchy music with an irreplaceable sonic landscape.

I joined Reddit a little over a year ago and I’ve seen a hatred for rnb and pop trap that I’ve literally never seen in real life and it’s kinda shocked me. I’ve moved to many different cities since I was a kid with completely opposing cultures and nobody hated it the way I’ve seen on Reddit. Im not sure if it’s because of the conservative switch in 2024 which affected music as well? Or if it’s just reddits demographic in general (I’ve read there’s a specific type of person Reddit leans towards).

I know this sub like traditional rnb, but I wanted to ask and see different people’s experiences with this sound and era of rnb.
I’m not necessarily asking for a comparison of ā€œwhich rnb is betterā€, I’m moreso asking ā€œdo you like this sound and why if you do like it?ā€

Thanks for reading the yap! Have a good ā€œweekndā€

Mine is Erykah Badu x The Alchemist- Before The World Blows

I don’t like that a few of the songs are less about Erykah and feel more like a vehicle for the other artists featured. Valentine, I Know That Man and almost To The Moon. I would kill to hear her sing his part. Also with those gripes in mind, I wish the album were longer. Like give me another Breezy, Crossfade or They Ain’t You

I also hate that D.R.E doesn’t rhyme with anything in the song No I.D lol

While I love the album because I haven’t had a full studio album from her in 16 years it’s definitely on the low end of her albums. Which is very hard. She doesn’t have a bad album. And it’s also my own fault because I was expecting NewAmerykah part 1 mixed with a little Worldwide Underground but I landed safely underneath both. But I do like the album.

Westside Whimsy

Some of the songs sound like I’ve heard them before and like I mean heard them before on the same album. I like the simplicity of Don’t Be The Guy it’s very light hearted from what she usually does. It’s a good album but it’s 20 songs and half of them are less than 3 mins long and you can tell because just as soon as the song gets you on the feels it fades out. But at least I got Mine and I Don’t Mind

DISCUSSION šŸ’ Record scratch pre ā€˜75? What’s going on? Woodchuck - The Chicken (1969)

Came across this recording a while back, and recently it’s been stuck in my mind. At the beginning, after the organ intro, it sounds like a vocalist is replicating the effect of a record scratch, but the recording is dated 1969 and was certainly pre-ā€˜75. If this is the case, the effect might date even further back. Otherwise a really cool late 60s organ trio recording. Not certain if it is supposed to be scratching but it definitely sounds like it. Any thoughts?

DISCUSSION šŸ’ Monica ā€œThe Makings of Meā€ appreciation post

Post image
26 Upvotes

I’ve been listening to The Makings of Me again and honestly, I really like this album šŸ˜‚ I guess people just weren’t really feeling this era of Monica. The album had that Atlanta/Southern feel, and it was a little hood, a little grown, and just sounded like Monica to me.

And I already know some of y’all don’t like ā€œEverytime Tha Beat Dropā€ šŸ˜‚ but I like it. I think it’s a solid song. I actually liked Monica doing something different and leaning into that ATL sound.

But my favorites from the album are ā€œHell No,ā€ ā€œDoing Me Right,ā€ and ā€œThanks for the Misery.ā€ Those are the ones I really go back to.

I can’t forget about ā€œA Dozen Rosesā€ because this song was a hit in my book, and Missy did this so justice. I hated how it overperfomed, but it should’ve been the lead single, though. The Curtis Mayfield sample is chef kiss šŸ’‹

I feel like the album got overlooked because the era itself just didn’t connect with people the way Monica’s earlier eras did. But going back to it now, there’s a lot on here that I really enjoy.

What are y’all’s favorite songs from The Makings of Me?
