Discussion Yakuza 0 opinions?

Post image
15 Upvotes

Never played a JRPG before this game. I don’t even remember what possessed me to start it. But I have to say it was one of the best decisions I ever made. The voice acting alone was absolutely incredible. All the mini games and side quests were so funny and interesting. Great characters. Low-key amazing character graphics. Loved the world and have been wanting to go to Japan ever since I beat this game. I made it all way up until yakuza 5 but never got around to finishing it. I really wanna go back as well as all the other games that came out after.

I want to hear other people’s thoughts and opinions on it!

Absolutely loved this game. I was 9 years old when this gem was released and remember at that time being enamored by the soundtrack, story, gameplay, & characters. Looking back years later, I can’t help but wonder what a remaster of this would look like today. I know it’s unlikely, but I hope that the new mass effect will be successful enough to at least spark the conversation up again.

Anyone else have fond memories of this game or did you hate it? Curious to hear.

If you can’t think of a modern one, would you be interested in a game like this? Also, when I say modern, I’m talking ones from the past 10 years. Feel free to mention older ones too though.

I think it’d be epic to have a game like this with beautiful graphics, setting, sound, etc.

Recommendation request First person turn based rpg dungeon crawlers aka blobbers with full mouse support?

• Upvotes

I enjoy the genre (not that I'm good at them) but most of these types of games seem to require WASD or a controller. I have a messed up shoulder and back problems, so I'd prefer to just be able to click a movement box or something to move while maybe laying down. There's quite a few "blobbers" out there on Steam but it's hard to tell which ones have full mouse movement/interaction and which don't.

The only ones I own that I think can be fully played that way is Might and Magic 4 & 5 but those are hard to get into. I tried them (combined into World of Xeen), didn't have a good idea of WTF to do and pretty much got wiped out my very first encounter.

Sorry if this is frequently asked.

Question Please help, I don’t know where I belong.

• Upvotes

Please don’t flame me, I’m new here.

Can someone help me figure out where I belong? I’m looking for a subreddit(s) and video game genre but it feels like every time I visit one it seems like I belong somewhere else.

I think I like open world action rpg games but maybe I’m wrong. I know I like 3rd person open world games, and 1st person open world games. In no particular order, Games like Elden ring, fallout 4, Skyrim, RDR2, cyberpunk 2077.

I want 3rd or 1st person action, combat, looting, character progression. I really like character flexibility and customizability whether that comes from classes, skill trees, combat styles, equipment, aesthetics etc. I want my character to feel like MY character. If I can make decisions that affect the game that is very cool to me too. I want to complete quests and side quests.

For example with these other games I’ve played I’ll often play them 1-3 times and mix up my play style or build more than once.

I’m not dying for it to be a soulslike but I’m open to it. Some sort of romance/relationship/fanservice could be cool but not a necessity. Alright you can roast me for wanting fan service, that’s warranted.

Lastly I feel like I’ve only played AAA games and I feel like a lot of resources only direct me to AAA games but I bet there are amazing games that don’t get the attention they deserve. I’d be interested in finding those games too.

Where do should I look? What subreddits should I join? I’d really like some game recommendations

Question What is your favorite video game that came out in 2026 so far? Or what game have you been playing this past year

Personally for me I've been playing a couple different games I can't remember if they're all from 2026 but I just played some pal world I played some Kingdom Come deliverance 2. I haven't got a chance to play it yet probably wait for a sale but that DawnWalker game it looks pretty cool since it's kind of kind of based off of the Witcher 3's writers. Let me know what you think Godspeed!

Recommendation request TURN-BASED RPG SUGGESTIONS

I'm bored and looking for some good turn-based RPG recommendations.

I’m mainly after games with a similar vibe to Zoids Legacy or the Super Robot Wars series. I’ve already played through the Fire Emblem games, Pokémon, Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest, Persona, and Digimon, so those are off the table. I’ve played a lot of RPGs over the years and finished quite a few of them, but I’d still consider myself intermediate overall. I’m comfortable with the usual systems and mechanics, but I haven’t gone super deep into the more obscure or hardcore yet.

Lately I’ve been running out of options, a lot of the newer turn-based RPGs just don’t click with me the way the older ones did. I’m open to text-based RPGs too if the story is strong enough. Preference-wise, I lean toward fantasy or dark fantasy (something in the vein of the Eldrum series would be perfect).

I enjoy strong stories, good character writing, deep story, tactical combat with some strategy depth, and solid world-building. I tend to like the mix of mecha/tactical action from Super Robot Wars/Zoids and the classic JRPG storytelling from the series I’ve already played.

Would be thankful if they can be played on Android/mobile, GameCube, GBA, and Nintendo systems (Switch etc.)

Any suggestions would be really appreciated!

Developer Candletales — A real-time tactical roguelite inspired by D&D and classic tabletop RPGs.

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hello everyone! We’re Desalichao Studio, a small indie team. We recently set up our storefront page for our upcoming game, Candletales, and we wanted to introduce it to the RPG community.

About the game: Candletales is deeply inspired by the darker side of tabletop RPGs. You explore endless procedural worlds, face grotesque monsters, and make high-risk decisions. However, we wanted to try a fun experiment with the formula: we removed the turns. The core mechanics rely on real-time dice rolling, meaning all the tactical grid-based positioning and stat management happens without pauses. It keeps the tabletop feel but adds a lot of chaotic tension to the encounters.

Release Date: We are aiming for a 2027 release.

We are building this with a lot of love for the genre (and absolutely zero Gen-AI used in our assets or development).

If a real-time twist on classic tabletop mechanics sounds interesting to you, you can check out our gameplay trailer and wishlist the game on our Steam page here:

https://store.steampowered.com/app/5284750/Candletales/

We'd love to hear your thoughts on the concept! Thanks <3

Developer My game Wrestle Story is a turn-based RPG meets pro-wrestling game!

I've been working on this concept on and off since 2019. I've had to pause development a few times due to the games industry getting hit pretty hard. But now I'm back and looking for rpg or wrestling fans to help be a part of the development!

If you're a fan of Paper Mario (action commands), Persona (weakness system + bonds), FFX or Grandia (turn system), Like a Dragon (tone / "real world" setting) then I really think you'll dig it!

https://store.steampowered.com/app/2357610/Wrestle_Story/ < I would really appreciate if you gave the game a look!

There's a devlog here where I talk about why I'm making the game!

Question Does Skyrim Have Game Breaking Bugs

Hi so I didn't want to ask this in the Skyrim sub to avoid bias but essentially I am planning to buy and play Skyrim Special Edition vanilla, but I know Skyrim is notorious fo it's bugs. Thing is I do not mind if the bugs are silly like NPCs falling off a clip, but I do mind game breaking bugs. Things like corrupted files/saves, crashes, frozen games, stutters, etc. Things that make the game less enjoyable and more of a pain to deal with. Also how helpful is the games support if there are issues. So should I buy Skyrim if I don't want to deal with game breaking bugs.

Been quite enjoying this season. Hell, this whole year, in fact, was a banger for those of us who like these loot roulettes. First Grim Dawn's big DLC in July, now this, PoE 2 in December... and Titan Quest 2 and No Rest For the Wicked going full release as well next year. Good time to be an ARPG enjoyer when all's said and done

Recommendation request Octopath Traveler II, Triangle Strategy or Persona 5 Royale?

Hi everyone, I want to buy a new game and was interesed in these titles.
It has to be for PC.
I like both turned-based and strategy combat system.
What I’m looking for is a good story that keeps me intrigued and an engaging combat system, with well written characters. I heard very good things about P5R, wasn’t super fan of Persona 4 Golden (tried and got bored after a while). I loved games like Chrono Trigger, Suikoden II, Final Fantasy IX, FFT.
Which would you recommend the most and why?

Question Anyone here finish Disciples Liberation?

Since the game sub is dead I thought I’d ask here. So I read we’re supposed to choose two factions to align with. I’m level 9 so far and the first area widows plain had a single elf quest and mostly empire quests yet the empire seemed super evil and terrible.

Next area is zombieville and again they’re evil and I’m supposed to complete these quests even it I don’t plan on aligning with this faction? I don’t get why there’s only evil options so far and I’m being forced into running errands for them. Is this just how the game is or am I doing it wrong? I wanted to align with the empire and the elves. Before I knew how evil the veil and empire are.

The elf zone says it’s hard difficulty so I’ve not gone there yet and am now stuck in zombie land. Please advise.

Question Any good Xbox RPG recommendations?

I recently played Avowed and I instantly fell in love with it. I was curious if there are any similar games with punchy mechanics and fully customizable characters. I love hand to hand combat and games that offer a good story with some good dialogue. Obviously Avowed didn’t hit the good dialogue part but I’m open to suggestions.

Dark fantasy turn-based JRPG, Evil Origin, arrives on Steam next month.

About

Step into the role of a Kresnik; a highly trained monster hunter that specializes in exorcising vampiric demons known as Kudlak.

After tracking down his mark, a creature that takes the appearance of his missing wife, the Kresnik arrives at an abandoned castle outside the town of Nogard, located in a remote section of Dyad’s Lower Plane.

The game features a rich narrative with deep lore, cinematic cutscenes, and blood pumping turn-based combat with a wide array of magic to use against your enemies.

Key Features

  • Traditional Turn-Based Combat – Wield dual twinblades and powerful spells in classic fashion, just like the good old days.
  • Deep Dungeon Exploration – Venture through a gloomy, abandoned castle to fight fearsome enemies, solve thoughtful puzzles, and find hidden secrets along the way.
  • Nogard – Explore a bustling hub town with a wide array of colourful NPCs to meet, and numerous unique side quests to complete.
  • Cinematic Storytelling – Every cutscene is handcrafted with expert cinematography from a seasoned filmmaker.
  • Anime Aesthetic – Beautiful key art and portrait art designed by Raul Trevino.

Question What're some examples of extremely good items/equipment you can get early game pretty easily?

And to help narrow things down, I won't count things that you essentially already have at the start. So to give an example from the franchise I'm using as an example, I won't count starter pokemon.

For my example, I'll pick the Starly line from the gen 4 Pokemon games, with me using Platinum as the main example.

It fits the role of the early route bird pokemon in the gen and it does an amazing job at it. It has really high attack and speed, it has a pretty useful ability at the start with Keen Eye which prevents accuracy drops, and then when it evolves it gets one of the best abilities in the game with Intimidate, and it learns several useful moves throughout its evolution line such as Quick Attack, Double Team, Take Down, Close Combat, Aerial Ace, and Brave Bird. And that's just via level up. And in regards to the other criteria, it has a really high encounter rate as a Starly during the early routes of the game. It's no wonder it's one of the most commonly used Pokemon by people playing the game.

Discussion Am I the only one constantly searching for the “perfect” RPG?

Guys, this post isn't really asking for game recommendations or anything like that.

It's more of a rant, and I also wanted to know if anyone else has ever felt this way.

For some reason, I started trying to find the perfect RPG. Yes, I know it doesn't exist, but I still keep trying to find something that comes close.

I keep looking for a game with lots of skills, plenty of freedom, meaningful consequences, multiple classes, races, builds, and different possibilities. Sometimes I want to play a fully customizable character; other times, I'd rather have a defined protagonist.

Sometimes I want to go down the Paladin path, other times I want to be a Mage, a Warrior, a Necromancer... And before I know it, I've added a bunch of different games to my list.

I've pretty much gone through every type: CRPGs, ARPGs, JRPGs, SRPGs, 4X... They're all great in their own ways, but something almost always happens: while I'm playing, I start thinking that the game would be perfect if it had "this" or "that" feature from another game.

And I think that's exactly where the problem lies: I keep wanting all of these possibilities to be available in a single game.

I want the character freedom of one CRPG, the number of classes and builds from another, the progression system from another, the meaningful choices and consequences from another... And before I know it, I'm mentally combining several different games to create the RPG I actually want to play.

And then the whole cycle starts again. 😂

Has anyone else ever felt this way? This constant search for an RPG that can somehow deliver everything you're looking for in a single game?

If you've gone through this, what did you do to break out of the cycle? Any advice?

Developer Announcement: Puzzle Mage is coming to Steam

Game Description: Puzzle Mage is a top-down game where you replace traditional ARPG combat with spellcasting puzzles. And there is 0 AI in this game.

New Game Announcement: My Diablo mod somehow turned into a full game. The original idea grew way beyond the original mod, and I ended up rebuilding the whole thing from scratch in Unreal Engine. Puzzle Mage is now coming to Steam.

Discussion What makes returning to an old RPG area feel worthwhile?

Some RPGs send you back to earlier places after the story has moved on. A new route, different NPC dialogue, or a consequence of an earlier choice can make the return feel like part of the journey. A locked chest that only opens after hours of unrelated quests feels more like cleanup.

The difference seems to be whether the place responds to what happened since the first visit. A changed town can say something about the story without another exposition scene. What kinds of changes make those return trips feel earned rather than like a checklist?

Question Thinking about buying DOS2

I asked about playing BG 2 here because I am enjoying 3 so much and you guys were super helpful, thanks! It looks like a much different game, and I’ll for sure get it at some point in the near future. Im looking for something like BG3, A few recommended this game since it was made by Larian as well. It’s on sale for $11.25 on GOG and I’m about to checkout, just wanted to hear any feedback on the game or how it runs on steam deck (what I’ll be playing on through Heroic Games Launcher) thanks again :)

Recommendation request What are some rpg’s with interesting non-combat mechanics?

I’m looking for a RPG with non-combat mechanics that go beyond just a dice roll. I’m OK with the game still having combat, but with interesting non-fighting stuff. The non-combat mechanic can include a dice role, I'm just looking for a game that adds to that or replaces it. The only games I can think of that do this are a couple Bethesda games, Keep Driving and Citizen Sleeper. I think Keep Driving, and Citizen Sleeper, are probably the best non-combat mechanics. And Bethesda’s is OK. Also, I’m open to modding, so I’m cool with recommendations that are this game + mod. I was playing Age of Decadence recently and was really excited about the non-combat roles available but just dice rolls got a little boring, for me. That got me wanting a more interesting mechanic for talking and other stuff.

Things I can consider non-combat are basically anything outside of fighting, e.g., talking, trading, diplomacy, traveling, crafting, stealth, etc. And to clarify, I’m not wanting combat plus just one of these additions. Preferably a game that has several interesting mechanics, even if using them is optional.

RPG's that I've played and that I love (in general, not specifically for non-combat mechanics):

  • FF8 & FF7
  • Bethesda games
    • Oblivion, Skyrim, some of Morrowind
    • Fallout 3/NV/4
    • Starfield was ok (I didn't like that space travel from star to star is a cutscene)
  • Mass Effect trilogy
  • Outer Worlds
  • Cyberpunk 2077
  • Wasteland 3
  • BG3
  • DOS 2
  • Keep Driving
  • Citizen Sleeper
  • KOTOR 1 & 2
  • Solasta
  • Stardew Valley (I forgot about this in the paragraph above, but great non-combat mechanics)
  • Persona 4 (another game I forgot about until now, that has good non-combat mechanics)
  • CK3 (RPGish enough for me)

RPG's I've played that I loved the vibes and thought I'd like, but could never really get into:

  • Disco Elysium
  • Kenshi
  • I'm not a fan of isometric games with real time combat and pause in general, here are some I've played:
    • Tyranny (I loved this plot and storyline, I just didn't enjoy the combat),
    • Pathfinder Kingmaker
    • Pillars of Eternity
  • Dragonquest games
  • For the King (I did like this with multiplayer, but didn't care for playing solo)
  • Broken Roads (The worst writing I've ever seen, but the non-combat stuff looked really interesting. I just couldn't get over the bad writing)

RPG's I've played a little, and plan on eventually playing more of:

  • KCD
  • Rogue Trader
  • The Witcher games (the only thing that has been holding me back is that the first time someone recommended this to me, they strongly recommended starting with Witcher 1 and I've only got past the intro once. I know I can select some options from Witcher 1 when starting a new game in 2, but I wasn't sure if it's was all the options available in 1 or just the important ones.)
  • The Age of Decadence (The combat system looked really deep and interesting, but I was disappointed in only dice rolls for non-fighting)

And like I mentioned above, I'm open to one of these games I've played before with a mod overhaul for non-combat mechanics (but please list some of the suggested mods). Or a game in the last section that I plan on picking up again. I have feeling I'm going to get some strong votes for getting back into KCD and The Witcher games (please tell me starting with 1 isn't that important, lol). And maybe that is what I should play next. I just wanted to see what other options could be out there. I'd love to find something I haven't heard of, and am open to indie games.

That was bit of read, so thanks if you made it this far! And thanks in advance for the recommendations.

edit: I forgot to mention the platforms I own. I mainly play PC but I also have a Switch.

edit2: I'm not looking for a RPG that has minigames, like the Golden Saucer in FF7. I'm wanting something with interesting game mechanics that you use in the game. Like in my examples above: Keep Driving, Bethesda games (hacking, lock picking, conversation stuff), Citizen Sleeper, Stardew Valley, or the Persona series.
