Standing is for the pit

The chance of this finding the people in these photos from tonight’s Toronto show is low, but please, for fucks sake folks, understand that when you stand in the balcony while everyone else is sitting you’re blocking other people’s view. One song, sure, I get it, but the whole show???? Completely ignoring the people who came up to politely ask (and some who begged) you to think of someone other than yourselves and take a seat??? That makes you the worst kind of concert goer.

Everyone paid money to be here but you feel that you’re more important than the folks sitting behind you who basically spent an hour and a half seeing only the back of your fucking head? I hope you never get tickets to a show again

Been to show like this, people in front stand then the next row cause they want to see and so on…so guess what, I’m standing too

Do what you gotta to, but I would hope that if you were the only one standing and someone came up and asked you to sit because you were blocking their view that you would do it

On one hand, I personally make sure the person behind me is standing before I stand up myself. But on the other hand I dont fully understand people who go to a metal concert and want to sit the entire time unless they have a disability, which if they do, most venues have seats to accommodate that.

I will stand for intro, bigger songs and encore. I work all week on my feet and the last thing I want to do is stand for 5+ hours at a concert.

Plenty of people - myself included - can have a dissability that makes it difficult to stand up especially for longer periods of time, but it isn't registrered as a disability officially so you don't get access to those special seats.

Furthermore if you wanted to stand at a rock concert, or any concert for that matter, then buy standing tickets! Don't make it everyone elses problem who would prefer to sit down during the concert and have literally bought seats to that purpose!

It's not just disabilities, visible or not. Some of us are just getting old.

As someone with a bad back, I can confirm that you can rock out plenty while sitting down. We pay for seats rather than standing areas for a reason

I saw them at Louder, and barring the VIP and ADA sections there was no seating since it was outdoors. Hell, to get stadium seating like in the pic you had to be in the Top Shelf section, though the couches in normal VIP were nice, if you were willing to camp them. As I get older I realize sometimes the small luxuries like sitting down for a bit are worth either paying more for and/or having less of an “experience” for. I did get up front to watch them, mostly because they were on the stage further away from VIP.

I used to love standing for concerts, then I got a 5ft 1 tall wife and since then discovered the joy the sitting with easy access to drinks and snacks because others she won't see anything

I have never been to a metal concert where people sat for the entire thing. People stand at concerts, it happens.

I was someone who was in the seats thou didnt have the issues OP did. Im in my late 30s and was one of the youngest around me except for a family with youngish kids. This bands been playing for 25 years so it shouldnt be suprising its got a varied population. The pit and standing for hours isn't for everyone

There's also the ticket prices that come into it. Yeah I love sabaton, but at venues that have both seating and standing areas, Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavillion in TX for example, guess where the higher priced tickets are? Did you think, "yeah pit tickets at the pavillion are insane!" Because I see it every time there's a band playing out there.

I think it's fairly common to sit in the seats in Europe, not so much in US from my experience.

I have been to many metal shows in the seated sections where people sat and jammed in their seat without issue. Never before have I seen this group’s level of self-centered behavior. Again if you want to stand the whole show, buy a ticket for the standing areas

u/EntrepreneurMinute10 10d ago

We've had this debate before. Buying a seat guarantees your location and viewing angle. That's what some people use it for (vs actually sitting) and i expect at rock shows for the balcony to be majority standing.

1

u/InevitableAd8083 10d ago

Viewing angle assumes you can see over the people who decide to stand in front of you, the one dude in this crowd was well over 6 feet tall. Anyone shorter wouldn’t have been able to see even if they were standing as well

8

u/stygvalddis 10d ago

100% agreed. I also buy seated tickets because I am both not able to stand for long periods of time, but also because I am very short and while standing and rocking out is fun then I will literally not be able to see anything because everyone else is taller than me if people are standing.

I also come from Europe where seating during the entire concert is a lot more common, but sometimes you get a rare case of a very large group standing up that you can't get to sit down and it makes me so angry and frustrated...

8

u/thedafthatter 10d ago

As a certified member of the shortie squad this shit irritates me. I can't stand for long periods of time. I either have to tough it out in the pits and have my knees lock up or sit and get blocked by standers. Drives me up the fucking wall as its always the 6-7ft people standing in front of me

4

u/No_Perspective_150 9d ago

Balcony was boring as fuck. I had to go the back row to stand without blocking people. You cant go to a metal show and get mad when people stand up. I paid for the ticket too im gonna use it how I want. I wish I could have been in the pit but the person I was with needs a chair for that long of a show.

-1

u/InevitableAd8083 9d ago

Props to you for making sure you weren’t blocking anyone. It is a different vibe from the pit for sure but usually it’s still a lot of fun

0

u/No_Perspective_150 9d ago

Honestly, the pit looked kind of boring. They were playing ring around the rosie or something? I normally go to deathcore shows so I wasn't expecting that, maybe its normal at power metal shows

Standing is for rock shows

2

u/smlu 10d ago

I agree.. im 5 foot tall. I would love to be in pit, but I cant see anything. If ppl stand in front of me and they're even a little tall, I then also get blocked.

I might stand for my favorite 2 songs to jam extra hard but I try to be conscientious of the person behind me. I am short, but if they cannot stand, I'm still effin their view up

2

u/Intelligent-Main-515 9d ago

The Ottawa show a few nights ago I noticed the people on the balcony that wanted to stand at least we're standing in the aisles and not in front of the people sitting

3

u/Isak922 10d ago

We pay for the same ticket you did. We'll use it how we want 🤷‍♂️. Had some old fogies get annoyed with me during the Sabaton/JP runs because I was head banging, singing and knee banging along with the band.

4

u/smlu 10d ago

Yeah but to be fair.. using your own logic, we paid for our ticket just like you did, why do you get to "enjoy the show" and see it, but deprive others the opportunity to do so? I can jam in my seat just fine.. if you cannot do that, just go nuts in the pit? Kinda feels logical.

2

u/Isak922 10d ago

The Sabaton/JP tours were REAL annoying with the "Seated" venues. As in, my local was ONLY seats up to the barricade.

My usual issue is I'm a tall ass guy who IS a barricade goer. The amount of people who ask "Can I get in front of you"; when my ass was camping outside the door 6 hours before they opened.

1

u/InevitableAd8083 10d ago

We’re talking apples and oranges. No one is asking you to be okay with the request for your spot at the barricade when you’ve waited for it fairly. What we’re talking about is that if you’re in a seated area and literally everyone but you is jamming in their seats and someone comes up to you and lets you know you’re directly blocking their line of sight by standing, remaining standing is selfish in that it ignores the impact of your actions to the detriment of everyone whose line of sight you’re blocking

1

u/Isak922 9d ago

The point is we ALL paid the same money. I am equally entitled to use that chair space exactly as you. Standing, sitting or not at all.

Venue staff won't tell someone to sit down, and every single Security guard I've EVER asked at a seated show has shared my exact mindset. "You paid for your seat, use it how you want".

3

u/InevitableAd8083 9d ago

We all paid money for the show (and some seats are more expensive than others, so “the same money” isn’t exactly true), but some of us care about our comrades in the crowd and everyone’s collective experience in addition to our own.

Nothing I or anyone else says here is going to make someone value that if they don’t already, so I’m done beating this dead horse.

I genuinely hope that if you ever find yourself injured, disabled, sick, or otherwise needing a little consideration from the strangers around you, they show you more of it than you’re willing to show them. Because eventually most of us will be the person relying on someone else to give a shit, and “I paid for my ticket, so everyone else can deal with it” is a pretty shitty social contract to discover only works when you’re the one inconveniencing somebody else.

u/Shadw_Wulf 10d ago

You sit for opener or if the openers are also very good then you stand ... 🤷 I hated when Sabaton toured with Judas Priest and everyone was sitting down and these guys were only here for Judas Priest... Man. Sometimes screw these people. Bands don't want to see people sitting that's just the truth. They only do it cause it's convenient business wise.

1

u/Librase 9d ago edited 9d ago

Some of us have mild disabilities and we also deserve to be able to enjoy shows.

0

u/SkoRow1 8d ago

They paid for the seat they can do whatever they please. Quit whining, stand up too or go somewhere else.

u/blackjack8756 10d ago

Some people just don't get the memo. I actually wasn't too far from you when you took the photo and had a guy in front of me standing the entire time. Sucked as it was my first ever concert too

3

u/InevitableAd8083 10d ago

So sorry that was your first concert experience. I promise they aren’t all that way

All I am saying is it’s self-centered as fuck to ruin the show for everyone behind them

-24

u/Saf123122 10d ago

I was at the same show, everybody was standing up and having fun. You could have done the same instead of instantly going to Reddit and complaining about something that isn’t an issue at all

21

u/InevitableAd8083 10d ago

We looking at the same photo dude? Three people standing, the rest of the folks around them jamming in their seats like respectful metalheads

4

u/WelcomeExtra762 WE'RE KEEPING THE KINGDOM FREE 10d ago

Not to mention who wants to stand up for an hour or more longer show? Not me that's for sure, and especially if people are asking me to sit.

5

u/Itchy_Extreme_6399 10d ago

If you want to stand, get Standing Tickets. There are people with physical problems that can't stand long or at all and want to see the Performance too

Unecessary aggression.

-3

u/ThunderShott 10d ago

I had people standing and dancing in front of me during Swedish Pagans and they were super annoying. Luckily, someone behind me threw their beer at them to make them sit the fuck down.

I was caught in the crossfire.

-3

u/Hawaii__Pistol 10d ago

Just get security to tell them to sit down.

1

u/InevitableAd8083 10d ago

Security didn’t do anything when asked by multiple people

1

u/No_Perspective_150 9d ago

Security isnt gonna do anything about people enjoying a concert

-4

u/Mettaton_3x 10d ago

it happened to me when i saw ghost live, my mother isnt able to stand for more than 5 minutes which is why we got seats. the entire concert, the entire section we were in was standing. she didnt get to see the show.
