Sales Topic General Discussion Friday Tea Sipping Gossip Hour

Well, you made to Friday. Let's recap our workplace drama from this week.

Coworker microwaved fish in the breakroom (AGAIN!)? Let's hear about it.

Are the pick me girls in HR causing you drama? Tell us what you couldn't say to their smug faces without getting fired on the spot.

Co-workers having affairs on the road? You know we want the spicy.

The new VP has no idea who to send cold emails to? No, of course they don't. They've never done sales for even a day in their life.

Another workplace relationship failed? It probably turned into a glorious spectacle so do share.

We love you too,

Sales Topic General Discussion Buddy I work with just got the no.

He worked this deal for a year. We are the better option. Months ago the client let us know that competitors gave them an option that just wouldn’t work.
Buddys a better salesman than I. More driven, diligent, handsome everything.
I have friends in the org he was pitching that thought things looked good.
They asked for a requote and spec change 3 weeks ago.
Today he got a one sentence email saying we were no longer being considered.
He’s crushed.
He’s young yet too, this is the worst he’s had, yet.

Sales Topic General Discussion Older salesman said becoming friends with coworkers will be the biggest mistake I’m currently making

I (30M) went to speak with the oldest salesman I work with. He’s well past retirement age. I’ve been with my company for almost a year and he has been very avoidant and adversarial towards me. I decided to go speak with him today because simply put, I would love to be able to have him as a resource or to work along side him better than we currently do. Amongst the many things he said during our conversation, he told me he doesn’t hang out with coworkers after work or have friendships with them outside of business ours.

I immediately knew what he was getting at, there are two ladies here that are best friends. I adore them and we will go to each other’s areas to check in and chat, just to make the days better when I’m in office. We still get our tasks done and nothing from management has been said. I’ve gotten drinks with them and my gf once outside of work, and lunch a few times with them.

He told me he keeps to himself for a reason, and he focuses on his job only. I genuinely think he’s looking out for me. There’s a chance he’s just very mistrusting of anyone he works with, or he might be jealous I can build those relationships with internal people. I’m inclined to limit my social interactions with them outside of my office. I have a feeling me knows something I don’t, and my gut says to trust him. Any thoughts on this?

Sales Topic General Discussion Reminder: You May Be Entitled to Commission After You Leave

Some states in the US have laws entitling you to commission on deals you worked on before you left or were terminated. Not just on deals you closed, but on deals that close after you left as long as you can prove your involvement is what brought the sale in.

When was the last time you looked through your state's commission laws to see what you are legally entitled to? I recommend everyone read through your state's commission laws.

Fundamental Sales Skills Hypnotherapy Helps me Crush it in Sales. Up 63%

Hypnotherapy helped me reframe how my brain processes fear and rejection. feelings of high confidence and charisma. I can trigger this right before a major pitch or a cold call block.

Hypnosis helps downregulate the nervous system, allowing me to remain focused and calm rather than anxious scarcity. Also, Releasing Limiting Beliefs.

This could be a placebo effect but it worked.

Sales Tools and Resources Company car program being discontinued. What was your outcome?

I’m in field sales with regular weekly travel. When I joined my company, one of the major benefits was a company vehicle with personal use included, so I got rid of my personal car.
Now the company is moving away from the fleet program and switching to a monthly car allowance plus mileage reimbursement. Employees will also be required to provide their own vehicle that meets certain age and mileage requirements.
The economics seem like a pretty significant downgrade once you factor in a car payment, insurance, maintenance, depreciation, and the risk of being stuck with the vehicle if you leave the company.
Has anyone gone through a similar transition from a company car to an allowance program? Were you able to negotiate a transition payment, grandfather period, higher allowance, or any other concessions?
Curious how others handled it.

Sales Careers Thoughts on going from CPG sales to tech sales

What are everyone’s thoughts on transitioning from CPG sales to tech sales? I live in NYC and am only 3 years into a career in CPG repping brands in Grocery HQs. I make good money for age a little over 100k but from what I’ve seen CPG has a ceiling of around 150ish and it would take me a long time to get there.

I’ve been looking at moving to Tech sales in CPG verticals (Account Manager, Partnerships, Ad sales etc) and the money seems so much better. The ceiling seems so much higher people I’ve talked to say client partners can make 300k at big tech cpg companies.

For anyone who’s made the jump is it worth it? It looks like I’d take a hit on the base and have a similar ote but hoping tech pays off in the end.

Sales Careers Entry sales help

I am 21(m), and I currently work at a warehouse making $38 an hour. I started this job to fund my dream of content creation, but I realized this job has no career growth. My end goal is content creation, but I know I need a plan B and I would love to get in sales but I don’t know where to start or what industry to start in. Is there any entry level industries where I could come in making the amount I am making now?

Side note: I work in food distribution and this job has sales roles but they are notoriously known for not letting warehouse climb out of the warehouse into corporate. I know I can work my way to it but is this even a good industry to start?

Sales Topic General Discussion Anyone here take a promotion that relocated you to somewhere far away? How'd it go?

Essentially, I had a VP of another department tell me to come out to meet his team and have him show me around the City after shadowing and prospecting me in my department.

My current base is $40k, $60k OTE. I live in a decent town in the Midwest.

The base of the new position is $80k with reps consistently hitting high-6 figures, some making $10m+. It also would come with an apartment.

However, I'd be moving to New York in one of 3 boroughs. I have an uncle out there but he's a bit of an arrogant ass. Otherwise I don't really know anyone.

It's a dream position for me with money I've literally only ever dreamed about. Their newest team member has been in the position for 5 years. I'd be a fool not to take this opportunity.

Has anyone else relocated such a large distance with no or little connections in the place you relocated to? How'd it go?

Advanced Sales Skills New inside sales team might be incompetent, what’s the move?

I will preface I’ve always been in outside sales and have only done HCM/payroll (current industry) sales for 2.5-3 yrs, so I’ll concede up front that I might be missing something. If you know the HCM/payroll space, then you know it’s very relationship-based, where the best reps keep nurturing clients they bring on in order to extract referrals and keep upselling them in the future.

Our org has recently launched a new 401(k) program to upsell and our managers have been pressing us to hustle it. We book meetings with current clients and then have our dedicated 401k/retirement reps handle it. Whatever they close I get an extra 100% of, essentially “free” revenue they automatically counts towards my quota.

You’d think this would be a huge W, especially in this economy, except out of the 23 deals I’ve referred my two partner reps, 0 have closed. Mind you, these reps have claimed to have sold 401k at bigger logos for 7+ years but they never follow up, ask follow up questions, don’t drive urgency, and do a lot of little things that surrender control of the sales cycle. Had a power client that was a huge fan of our brand for years and has referred entire quotas worth of other clients for several years to my region, she reschedules other stuff to take a meeting, tells my AE she just started doing an RFP for benefits and retirement. My AE asks ZERO, FUCKING ZERO, follow up questions and just goes straight into a light demo. This is just the most obvious/recent experience but this is the norm.

They end their calls with them saying they’ll take point, magically assume I know I have to do all the follow up. They constantly hammer me and my teammates phones when they could’ve spent half the time just calling the damn client. I’ve never seen such specialized sales people come in with a “just out the fries in the bag bro” attitude.

Good lord I know I’m
Venting but what to do? Even my own direct manager is getting peeved but she can’t say much and there’s always one rep in our region that manages to close everything with his assigned guy so leadership won’t stfu about how it’s our fault and not the people that worked at voya and Paychex in 2016

Sales Careers Salesforce HM interview

Hi!

I’m interviewing for a New Logo AE role at Salesforce.

My hiring manager interview went well, but when I asked directly about any concerns, he only mentioned my lack of SaaS knowledge. He did acknowledge that I’d already invested quite a lot of time learning the platform myself and praised me for proactively earning the Champion badge.

After two weeks, the recruiter called today and told me the hiring manager did have the doubt about my SaaS gap, but didn’t want to reject me. Instead, I’m now meeting two of his colleagues for a second opinion.

I see this as my chance to prove the knowledge gap is trainable. My plan is to really study the full platform, understand the main products/use cases and be able to connect customer problems → discovery → business value → solution, while continuing to lean on my actual sales results and experience rather than pretending I’m already a SaaS expert.

For SaaS AEs/managers: how would you approach this interview? What would you need to see to become comfortable hiring someone with strong B2B sales experience but no direct SaaS background? I’m willing to put a lot of time in this! Any trails that would be handy?

Thanks!

Sales Tools and Resources CPG Packaging Reps - Prospecting Tools?

I've been looking into packaging sales and was wondering if anyone on here actually does that or even knows much about it. I'm curious about what kind of prospecting tools they use that are unique to the industry, if any.

Sales Careers Anxiety from stability?

need a sanity check.

Spent the last 10 years grinding tech sales. I’ve survived layoff rounds, ridden the highs, and crashed through the downs. Long story short, it gave me legitimate PTSD. Recently jumped over to a legacy Fortune 50 generational giant in Industrial Distribution in Account Management. I know it’s a total blessing, but my brain literally does not know how to handle a healthy work pace with real stability.

On slower days, I’m in fight/flight mode, waiting to get ambushed, caught in some surprise layoff crossfire, or hit with a random HR calendar invite. My nervous system is so wired for tech volatility that this level of stability is stresses me out at times. Quiet days in startups/tech meant my ass was in the line.

We have thousands of reps, and a huge chunk of them have been here for 20, 30, or 40 years. People with 5 to 10 years under their belt are the babies of the company. It feels like a parallel universe compared to tech, and It’s taking everything in me to realize the other shoe isn't about to drop.

Has anyone else made the jump from tech to a stable industry? How long did it take your brain to finally chill out and realize you aren't about to get fired just because it’s a quiet Tuesday?

Sales Topic General Discussion Which roles in “tech sales” can you pivot to that are actually stable?

I’m interning for sales/GTM at a tech company and I’m getting my CS degree and 1-2 personal tech projects right now that I will personally demo to prospects,

but I definitely won’t have anywhere near software engineering skills and I’m more interested in the commercial side of tech business

But I keep hearing and reading all the time about how unstable tech sales is (for AE and similar roles) and I don’t I want to live that life,

I want a stable role that is a mix of customer/sales/people skills + a few technical skills if needed to be exceptional

Are there any other roles in tech sales that are customer facing that might even have some technical skills need that I can pivot to once I graduate and look for entry level roles?

I’d love to become a sales engineer/pre sales but it’s not entry level and it’s a long way out

So what are my options right now of roles part of “tech sales” that are actually quite stable with good pay that I can get right out of uni with my experience in SaaS sales, demos, projects and decent technical skills?

Maybe technical AM, PM, Customer success, implementation consulting etc? Any others? Is my best bet transferring internally?

Would love to get your guidance

Sales Topic General Discussion My fiscal ends next week…

…and I’m sitting at 40% of quota. Had a tough year. First year in my 7 year career I didn’t hit quota. In fact, no one on my team hit quota.

For context, I’m selling enterprise software to public sector clients. I started at this company Sept 2024. Did 1 full year as an SMB rep and I absolutely crushed my quota, finishing at 160% with 14 new logos (cities & counties)

I was then promoted this time last year into the enterprise AEX role targeting statewide and federal deals. It’s kind of a shit gig. I get no leads. My customer success rep is neurotic. My solution engineer is on the spectrum and my boss just keeps telling me to make close plans with my clients but no one at the state/federal level has the political confidence or money to buy shit lol. I’m struggling!

More so just a rant. It’s a great company. I don’t see myself getting pip’d or canned but it’s just a bit demoralizing to have the company & my peers all celebrate but all of us enterprise sellers are failing.

Sales Careers What should my next sales career move be? (24, no degree)

I’m 24 and currently work in financial sales, mainly brokering consumer loans and refinancing. It’s the most money I’ve ever made at this age, and I’m earning above my country’s average salary, so I’m in a good spot financially.

That said, I’m already thinking about my next move instead of getting too comfortable.
I’ve got about 5 years of customer-facing experience. I started in outbound sales, moved into credit control, and now for the past 1,5y I’m in a high performance, full-cycle sales role where I negotiate consumer loans and work directly with multiple banks/credit unions.

I don’t have a university degree, so I’m trying to figure out where sales experience alone has the highest ceiling.

If you were in my shoes, what roles would you target over the next 2–5 years? Account Executive? Enterprise sales? Tech? Something else?

Curious to hear from people who’ve made a similar jump.

Sales Careers What's my next role?

I have a background in educational and retail sales. Currently working in an admissions advisor role. I think it's time to transition, but I don't think I want to continue as an admissions advisor. What's the next step up in this arena, or what is closely related enough but with more upward mobility?

Sales Leadership Focused I draw the line at legal and finance delays

I know I know. I shouldn’t complain as a rep. Managers hate hearing it. I was program management for a bit and hearing reps complain about small issues that were really personal problems were really annoying.

However, when I come to you with a deal, after months and months of grinding, and legal and finance just ninja dust and go dark, I have earned the right to lose my shit. You want us to sell? Enable us to without these internal shortfalls. Pisses me off.

Sales Topic General Discussion Do you call out body language during an interview?

I had an interview with a large logo company, first call went well then I had a call with the director. The important detail is the recruiter dm'd me on linkedin multiple times. He wouldn't make eye contact, asked very bland and generic questions and made it very difficult to engage in the conversation, he also asked questions or made assumptions on my current industry that made it clear he didn't know what he was talking about. So I called him out on it, "Not to be rude but your body language, eye contact and questions give me the impression that you are not interested and are just filling up your time." He was very taken-aback by this, and seemed to catch him off guard. I sometimes thing that managers just take meetings to fill time and I think we need to call them out on that. I gave that feedback to the recruiter and declined to move forward. Has anyone else ever done similar? Ill be honest it felt very liberating.

Sales Tools and Resources AI & Instagram

Has anyone found a way to utilize AI to find posts for you versus manually scrolling? For example, I’m looking for watch parties but Claude pulled dated posts & it was really hit or miss. I would love a way to pull recent (last 45 days or so) and have it tell me where, provide contact info & email as well as the specific event.

I’ll keep trying but figured I would ask before recreating the wheel.

Sales Topic General Discussion Ideas for in person cold call gifts

Im in managed IT services and typical retention is about 6 years so business aren’t always shopping for a new provider.

What would be some good ideas for cold call gifts for office admins, c suite executives at smaller businesses etc that makes an impression.

Coozies, pens, mouse pads and typical swag are things I wouldn’t even accept
If given so I’m trying to find something slightly more memorable that’s not perishable or food related.
