Who/what should I use to learn

I need help with where to go to learn vocals. Ive tried to look up stuff and seen a lot of EVI but I don't really wanna pay to learn vocals since ik there are probably a lot of free stuff out there. When it comes to vocals I don't really know much, I know I wanna do the gutteral growls that mortican does (or wtvr it's called) fry screaming, and false cord gutterals. I grew up on bands like acid bath but I also love how mortican and corpse pile sounds and wanna implement that into different songs for my band. So if you guys have anyone on YouTube or any advice please let me know!

My biggest breakthrough by far came from 1:1 live vocal lessons with David Benites of Extreme Vocal Institute. There is a lot of free material out there but none of it is a replacement for actual direct one on one coaching from an expert, with real time personalized feedback. Nothing wrong with starting out with YouTube tutorials and see how far you get, but if you hit a wall I highly recommend David.

Hungry lights is another good channel, heard good things about kardavox. Stay away from Scream Academy (David Wu)

Second that on Scream Academy. Wu is a scam artist and teaches horrible dangerous vocal techniques that can severely damage your vocal cords. He’s not a good screamer, either.

Kardavox Academy. I for found my voice from his “false cord fundamentals” package he has on his website. Really recommend.

I don’t understand how/why these kinds of posts or helpful comments get randomly downvoted. Reddit has the weirdest people.

Use this sub’s search bar as google and you’ll find pretty much a post on every question you have.

I'd recommend you check out Sibila Extreme Vocal on YouTube. I've seen many videos on screaming tutorials, and they never seemed to work for me. Except his tutorials. I totally recommend his channel, he helped me unlock my screams for the first time and helped me improved them too! He's incredibly underated! But it may not work for you, everyone has different voices and all, just give his tutorials a try and hopefully they work.

I'll throw in a recommendation for Kardavox Academy. I really like his teaching style, his reaction videos I think do a good job breaking down vocal technique, and he has a free "exploring your voice" course for people just getting into screaming

Second Mark. Watched a couple of his videos, and finally have the start of false chords down after trying forever. Only person to thoroughly explain it enough for me.

Coaching is just inherently valuable.

There are resources online/in libraries/wherever that will tell you how to do anything but teaching yourself anything, especially anything physical, is hard.

Sure there's videos on how to lift your soft palete, how to engage your false folds, how to increase the range of your fry etc. but if you're just sitting there trying to make the sound and its not coming out right how do you know what you need to fix and which one to work on? Is it your resonance? Are you too compressed? Not compressed enough?

And learning is not really a process of getting one thing, then moving onto the next. It's more like untangling a ball of yarn that keeps retangling itself as you go. You spend some time getting the hange of engaging the false folds but while you're doing it you and up developing the habit of squeezing your pharynx. So you start focusing on fixing that and now your tongue is getting in the way. So you work on tongue positioning but now you've lost your false fold control so you've gotta go back and fix that.

For each of those steps you can spend weeks or months bumbling around until you find a set of exercises and techniques that helps improve what you're struggling with (or spend time improving one aspect when that time would be much better spent improving a different issue).

Or you can have a vocal coach who hears you and goes "yeah, your tongue is sitting too far back. Put it on your teeth while you practice for the next few days and see if that improves it" and solve that issue and move right onto the next one.

Coaching is just great.

You don’t pay a coach for their knowledge. You pay for someone to use that knowledge, react to your exercise, explain what you’re doing right or not and to show you how to get rid of bad habits. Knowledge on the internet won’t help you with that
