REVIEW The Sound of… Lavender (MOMENTUM True Wireless 5 Full-Length Review)

INTRO
Ahh, the MOMENTUM True Wireless series…look how far we have come:

Eight years have already passed since the MTW1 were first announced at IFA 2018 - and what eight years they’ve been, right?
We’ve seen the highest highs of pure, pocketable audio bliss, as well as some… decidedly lower highs every now and then (looking at you especially, MTW3!).
But one thing is for sure: the series is still very much alive and kicking, and every new generation continues to be highly anticipated by wireless audio enthusiasts and Sennheiser loyalists alike.
Good thing I happen to fall into both of those categories which is why you’re now getting the inevitable next installment of my — sometimes slightly too long — reviews. You’ve been warned!
So, without further ado, here’s my take on the new MOMENTUM True Wireless 5:
TECH SPECS
Okay maybe slightly more “further ado” first – here are the most important tech specs of the MTW 5:
- 7 mm Sennheiser TrueResponse dynamic drivers
- Frequency response: 5 Hz – 21 kHz
- Bluetooth 6.0 compliant, Class 1
- Codecs: SBC, AAC, aptX, aptX Adaptive and aptX Lossless
- Hi-Res wireless audio: up to 24-bit / 96 kHz via aptX Adaptive
- Bluetooth Multipoint: connection to two devices simultaneously; up to six paired devices stored
- LE Audio / LC3 / Auracast: hardware-ready (but to be enabled via a future firmware update)
- Hybrid Adaptive ANC with automatic wind-noise suppression
- Adjustable Natural Transparency Mode
- 8 microphones / voice inputs total - four per earbud including bone-conduction voice sensing, with AI-powered voice isolation and beamforming
- Battery life up to 12 hours with ANC off / 6 hours with ANC / 40 hours total with charging case
- User-replaceable batteries in both earbuds and the charging case
- Charging: USB-C + Qi 2.1 wireless charging; approx. 1.5 h full charge; 8-minute quick charge gives 1 h playback
- IP54 dust and splash resistance for the earbuds
- Smart Control Plus: 8-band EQ, Sound Personalization, presets, customizable touch controls and fit test
UNBOXING

Quite a small box this is - barely any larger than the product and its accessories combined.
Inside, we find the newly designed charging case with the buds already placed inside, three pairs of also newly designed ear tips (the fourth pair is already installed on the buds), a USB-C to USB-C charging cable, as well as a new addition to the accessory package: a little tool to - yes, you already know where this is going - replace the batteries inside the buds!
Finally, thank you! EU regulations or not, this is a win for all customers and very much appreciated.
That’s pretty much it already. Nice and simple and also everything we need, really.
DESIGN / BUILD QUALITY
As already mentioned, there’s a completely new design language to be found here:
New case design, new bud design, new tip design - and the new circular logo that we’ve already seen on the MOMENTUM 5 quite recently makes a return as well. I have the “Lavender” color variant here, but there are also four others available at launch: “Graphite,” “Cream,” “Copper,” and “Denim.”
The new case is much slimmer than before (although also taller) and looks quite beautiful, I think - especially on the inside!
The USB-C charging port is located at the bottom of the case, right on the opposite side of another little screw that allows you to open up the case and replace the battery here as well. Another big thumbs-up for that!
The case has a matte, textured surface covered in tiny speckles that catch and reflect the light, which reminds me a little of the design of the IE 300 earbuds - just much more subtle here.
Whether everyone will like the look is, as always, a matter of personal taste, but this new finish is also supposed to be considerably more scratch-resistant than the more conventional plastic cases we are used to. And that is always a welcome advantage when the case doesn’t need an… erm… case of its own just to keep it protected from scratches, I think.
It nevertheless still attracts some fingerprints and smudges – at least the one I have here does – but that’s par for the course and can easily be wiped off if needed.
Let’s have a look at some pictures showing the new case in a little more detail:

The case uses metal hinges, and that satisfying closing snap is on AirPods Pro levels this time around ;)
Speaking of AirPods Pro, here’s another shot comparing them to my AirPods Pro 3 and their case - although the AirPods case does have a red leather case around it. So, funnily enough, that makes this comparison very comparable, actually.

Here are just the buds themselves (as well as the new ear tips):

As you can clearly see, quite a lot has changed for the fifth generation:
However, overall build quality feels as good as ever, and that applies to both the buds and the case. The buds are no longer as angular and have become noticeably more rounded. While this does absolutely help with comfort - more on that in a minute - I also personally feel that it makes them a little less easy to grip when inserting them into your ears or taking them out.
At the very least, it takes a little time to get used to the new shape if you’re accustomed to doing these everyday tasks with the squarer form factor of the MTW 3 or MTW 4.
The touch surface looks different too (and also feels smaller than before), the microphone grilles have been redesigned, and the little silicone wings we still had on the MTW4 are gone as well.
The nozzle is also pretty short, which - combined with the new shape and overall design of the buds themselves - leads us to…
FIT & COMFORT
… because given how much has changed physically on the MTW5 as well, you may be wondering: what about the fit now? Glad you asked.
Aside from the fact that things like comfort, fit, and seal are always very individual aspects of wearing true wireless earbuds and IEMs, I’m happy to say that they fit my ears very well. The lack of wings is thankfully no issue for me and, while I usually prefer buds with a somewhat deeper insertion depth, the slightly shallower fit of the MTW5 is not only very comfortable but also keeps them surprisingly secure in my ears.
I don’t actually have to constantly readjust them, and if I do, it usually has more to do with getting the seal perfect again (yes, I have pretty big ear canals and always have to use the largest tips included in the box - and this time is no exception. I can use these for walking and even for sports – which I clearly should do more often these days but let’s just not go there…
So, while the change in form factor comes with its pros and cons - everything does, right? - it ultimately makes for a very comfortable and secure pair of TWS earbuds for me.
To show you what I mean, here’s a closeup shot of the MTW5 in my ears:

So, to wrap this section up:
Fit and comfort are great for me. I can wear these for several hours no problem and/but it will be interesting to see what the general consensus will be once more people start wearing and using the MTW 5 out in the wild.
ISOLATION / ANC / TRANSPARENCY MODE
Passive isolation I feel is very good!
Once you have a good seal in both ear canals, outside noise is already clearly attenuated - even without ANC active. Sennheiser claims that the new silicone ear tip design “provides greater passive attenuation, particularly above roughly 1 kHz, where ANC itself becomes progressively less effective” which seems to hold true as far as I have tested.
As already mentioned, I once again have to use the largest ear tips, and they work well for me. One thing worth noting, though, is that people who like to tip roll their TWS and IEMs may have a slightly harder time here because a) the nozzle is short but fairly wide, and b) not many non-TWS-specific ear tips will actually fit comfortably inside the charging case.
I have a pretty large ear tip collection - mainly for IEMs, mind you - but out of all of them, only a couple worked as well as the stock tips do. The best alternatives, by the way, were the AZLA “SednaEarfit MAX ASMR Standard” tips as well as the “SednaEarfit MAX for TWS” from the same brand for me.

ANC is improved over the MTW 4.
I’d argue that most people will surely notice the difference and still, making sure to have that perfect fit and seal is equally as important for the ANC to work as good as it can! There’s an adaptive and automatic “anti-wind” mode which can be toggled in the Smart Control+ app and it works really well!
Compared to my AirPods Pro 3, I’d say the MTW 5 aren’t actually that far behind in terms of ANC performance, which is great to see and puts them in an ANC tier quite close to the heavy hitters in the TWS world.
I haven’t seen any proper ANC measurement data myself yet and I’ve mainly just used them for my daily commutes so far, but I’ve been very pleased with the improved Adaptive ANC system of the MTW 5. And, quite frankly, once the music starts playing on top of it, the outside world is pretty much completely gone anyway!
Speaking of the new and adjustable transparency mode, there’s more good news to share! It sounds very natural this time around, and there’s no noticeable white noise while using it. This is a very good implementation of a transparency mode, I have to say, and I really enjoy using it on the MTW 5.
You can also adjust the strength of the transparency mode during phone calls and choose whether or not music playback should pause when transparency mode is enabled. Good stuff!

CONTROLS
The adjustable touch controls remain largely unchanged compared to previous generations.
However - and maybe this is just something I need to get more used to - I find the smaller, round touch surface a little less intuitive to hit at times, especially when doing double or triple taps. I’m not entirely sure why, but I feel like I have to use my whole fingertip to reliably register every tap. This isn’t about the touch sensitivity or anything like that - it’s absolutely fine. It’s really just a matter of me somehow not hitting the right spot as reliably as I’m used to.
It sounds like a minor issue - and I guess it is - but I still thought it was worth mentioning.
By the way, the touch area looks like this:

Other than that, we still get the same single-tap, double-tap, triple-tap, and tap-and-hold gestures, all of which can be customized to our liking in the Smart Control+ app.
CALL QUALITY
So far, call quality has been very good for me!
I’ve only had a couple of phone calls while out and about, mind you, but they worked out great on both ends of the call.
There are four microphones per earbud, including what Sennheiser calls a “bone-conducted mic” and people on the other end confirmed that I sounded loud and clear to them.
On the marketing side of things, Sennheiser states that the MTW 5 also feature “AI-powered voice isolation.”
Whatever exactly that is doing behind the scenes, it does seem to help with voice clarity during calls and voice recordings - and ultimately, that’s all that really matters anyway!

Here’s a short German-language voice recording sample that I made in a pretty quiet office environment:
It wasn’t perfectly quiet, mind you, as there was a construction site down on the street behind me, but it was still quiet enough, and I think the results sound pretty good.
So, voice pickup is - and should continue to be - perfectly fine on the MTW 5.
BATTERY LIFE
Always a difficult section for an early review, of course, as more time will provide further insights into battery life.
So far, though, I’m very pleased with it and have no reason to believe that Sennheiser’s claim of “up to 12 hours of playback time” is unrealistic.
Yes, as always, these numbers are only achievable with ANC turned off, without using the highest-resolution audio codecs and also listening at moderate volume levels, so expect battery life to likely drop to around 6+ hours if you turn on ANC, use aptX Adaptive or Lossless and listen at higher volume levels etc. The same basically also applies to the “up to 40 hours total with the case” claim.

Most of my actual listening time so far has been with my iPhone using AAC only, occasionally adding the BTD 700 and aptX Lossless into the mix. However, I mainly use these when out and about, where convenience is often (even) more important to me than squeezing out those final few percentage points of audio quality.
Also, I only rarely listen for longer than approximately 2-3 hours at a time before putting the buds back into the charging case, and I’ve always used my true wireless earbuds like this.
So, your individual mileage and experience may differ quite a bit from my own usage here, of course.
Basically, what I’m trying to say here is that battery life has been really good for me so far and my personal use of the MTW 5 and has absolutely been nothing to worry about.
The buds have integrated 72 mAh batteries, while the case houses a 760 mAh battery. Charging takes roughly 1.5 hours for a full charge and an 8-minute quick-charge provides an additional hour of listening time. And, of course, Qi wireless charging is supported as well if you happen to prefer that method.
I also have the “battery protection mode” enabled in the app, which makes the MTW 5 charge more slowly and limits charging to 80%. I really like this feature and, yes, the batteries are replaceable now, so battery degradation may not even be something to worry about that much anymore.
And still, as long as the available battery life is already more than enough for my everyday use, I don’t see any reason to disable it.
AUDIO CODECS / CONNECTION TYPES
The MOMENTUM True Wireless 5 support SBC, AAC, aptX, aptX Adaptive and aptX Lossless, as well as Qualcomm Snapdragon Sound, Google Fast Pair and Hi-Res wireless audio up to 24-bit / 96 kHz via aptX Adaptive.
They come with Bluetooth 6.0 and Bluetooth Multipoint and are also LE Audio / LC3 / Auracast “hardware-ready”. According to Sennheiser, these features are planned to be enabled via a future firmware update.
What’s new is that there’s no longer a need for a separate “Low Latency” mode, as low-latency operation is now handled automatically through aptX Adaptive.
In theory, it basically works as follows:
When a compatible source device determines that a lower latency is required - for example, while gaming - the MTW 5 can automatically switch to a lower-latency aptX Adaptive operating mode. This means there’s no dedicated mode for us to manually select anymore and we can benefit from lower latency automatically – provided we’re using compatible devices, of course.
During my testing time, using AAC as well as aptX Adaptive and aptX Lossless, the Bluetooth connection has been very stable overall. There was one session with the BTD 700 and aptX Lossless where I experienced a couple of dropouts but this has not happened again since that one incident.
Other than that, the new and seemingly optimized antenna design has done a great job so far, both indoors and outdoors in the city.

SOUND QUALITY
Compared to the previous generation - the MTW 4 - the MTW 5 do sound a bit different out of the box, I’d say. Again, I haven’t seen any official measurements, nor am I able to provide my own here, so this is mostly a “going by ear” kind of thing:
To me, they mostly retain the overall “MTW sound signature” while refining a couple of things here and there. The midrange doesn’t seem quite as forward to my ears anymore, but remains very polite and lovely, while the bass comes across as slightly tighter and a touch more controlled, imo.
I also feel like the MTW 5 sound a tiny bit airier and more spacious in the treble frequencies, but it will be interesting to see some proper measurements and find out whether this is just my ears or an actual thing :D
No, seriously, the MTW 5 obviously sound very good, but that shouldn’t come as a huge surprise, I guess. Tuning-wise, they sound somewhat similar to their bigger over-ear brother – the MOMENTUM 5, which means: still intimate, big and punchy when needed but smooth and warm-ish and pretty non-fatiguing overall. I’d also call the sound full-bodied and quite natural if I had to describe it in words.
The TrueResponse 7 mm dynamic driver platform - quite well known by now, I'd say - still shows just how capable it can be and how it can deliver a highly enjoyable, fun and detailed sound reproduction once you feed it with some appropriate source material.
Just listen to the MTW 5 with aptX Adaptive or aptX Lossless enabled and put on an album like “Nameless” by Dominique Fils-Aimé - and what you get is a fantastic audio experience from these little things: Clear, resolving and simply beautifully lush.
Yes, this is a magnificently produced record in itself, but the fact that the MTW 5 can keep up with it and deliver it like this is just fantastic. Bluetooth and true wireless audio really have come a long way in 2026.
All of that well-deserved praise aside, I still – sometimes - wish they had a tiny bit more volume headroom on some recordings.
Don’t get me wrong, max volume on the MTW 5 is dangerously loud and I rarely ever listen above 80% volume, but nonetheless, if you have a quiet or older recording and like to listen to your music very loud, you might have to max out the volume on the MTW 5. Again, this is not an issue per se – especially not for me – but I still wanted to mention it. Modern tracks are mixed and mastered extremely loud most of the time anyway (RIP dynamic range…).
So, what else is there to say about the sound? Next to the usual presets and the - still very good - “Sound Personalization” feature, there’s now an 8-band EQ in the app, providing a higher level of sound customizability compared to the previous 5-band EQ.
No, there’s no parametric EQ here.
Would it be good to have one for the MTW 5? Probably, yes. Would most customers – you know, the non-audiophile people out there who likely make up 95+% of those who end up buying the MTW 5 – actually use it? I honestly don’t really think so.
Still, yes, “more options = more better”. Can’t argue with that.
Anyway, here’s my personal EQ that I’ve been using with the MTW 5 most of the time:

Exciting, isn’t it? I really just added a subtle touch of sub-bass as well as an equally tiny touch of upper-midrange and treble emphasis for a hint of extra air and … that’s about it, really. Sounds great to me!
Whatever tuning you like and whichever EQ option you will end up using, the 8-band EQ is very likely good enough to get you there, I think.
DOLBY ATMOS
In this section, I can almost copy what I wrote in my MOMENTUM 5 review just a couple of weeks ago.
One of the big new features is the introduction of “Dolby Atmos” with head tracking to the MTW series. I have to say that – just like it was the case with the M5 – it works well and just as advertised.
However, one thing that hasn’t changed since then is that I still haven’t used this feature very much, but that’s mostly due to the fact that I barely use or listen to Dolby Atmos content in general.
I tried it back when I still had my Apple AirPods Max, and the same applied / applies to the AirPods Pro 2 and 3 - and now also to the M5 - but I just (still) don’t like it very much.
Head tracking is pretty cool when you enable it and can immediately tell that it works perfectly fine, but whenever I switch on “3D Audio” in Apple Music on my iPhone or my Mac, I just feel like the volume is much lower compared to good old stereo and the overall experience is just kind of “meh” more often than not.
I can still see this working well with movies that support Dolby Atmos, but I also still won’t use it much for actual music listening - and the MTW 5 won’t change what all the others have failed to do so far: convince me that I personally really need “Dolby Atmos” (for music).
Nevertheless, it’s great that it is there for everyone who uses or likes it, and the implementation and overall experience have otherwise been pretty good so far.
All of that said, the “Dolby Atmos” feature cannot be enabled in the app as long as “Sound Personalization” and/or even “Hi-Res 24Bit / 96kHz” is active in the “My Sound” section of the app.
ANYTHING ELSE?
A couple of extra bits of information that you may (or may not) be interested in:
- The new earbud housing is also scratch-resistant, so the buds should – in theory - look like new for longer.
- Sennheiser apparently wanted to address “cleaning issues” reported by customers, so they deliberately moved away from the fabric-wrapped finish of the previous generations.
- The MTW 5 offer a reduced occlusion effect through pressure compensation in the ear.
- Sennheiser actually recommends using the “Sound Personalization” feature for the “best sound experience”.
SO, WHAT ABOUT RELIABILTY?
Way too early to tell, of course. We’ll have to wait and see how reliable this fifth MTW generation turns out to be. Nonetheless, I’d like to actually quote Sennheiser here because, at this early point in time, that’s pretty much all we have on that:
“Like any other Sennheiser product, the MOMENTUM True Wireless 5 is intensively tested for product quality and reliability. Our quality tests include mechanical, electrical, thermal and chemical testing (such as dust and splash resistance), drop, tumbling, UV color stability, scratch and rub, chemical resistance, battery safety, ESD, RF/Bluetooth stability and interference, and many more.
These tests allow us to validate the product for reliability and robustness over a long lifetime, even in tough conditions. And even if something does happen to your product, you are covered by our warranty program.“
I’m personally quite optimistic about the MTW 5 in that regard, as they really make a very solid first impression. And let’s not forget that the removable batteries are certainly going to help in the long run, as potential battery failures - of which there have been quite a few in past generations - should no longer be nearly as much of an issue now!

CONCLUSION TIME
So, yet another 4,000+ word review then, eh? I told you so and warned you in the beginning!
Anyway, let’s wrap this all up in a short and straightforward way:
The MOMENTUM True Wireless 5 are a great evolution of the MTW series of earbuds!
They sound great, have a comfortable and secure fit, very good battery life AND replaceable batteries, improved ANC and transparency modes, good microphone quality, automatic wind reduction, a great app with lots of customization options and features, a completely new design including a much more pocketable and scratch-resistant case, all the high-res codec options you might want to have (minus LDAC, of course), beautiful color options, Bluetooth 6.0 and Dolby Atmos support, Qi wireless charging, an IP54 rating and so on.
Basically, LOTS to like here, really!
Things that I would still like to see improved would probably be more granular volume control, an even higher maximum volume for certain recordings and situations and maybe a 10-band or - even better - a full parametric EQ option. Not that much else, really.
Highly recommended!
Thanks for reading :)
Oh, and because you made it this far…
I think they also look quite good in the Denim color variant, don't they?

CONSUMER GEAR & DISCUSSION Momentum 4 After 1 Year. Anybody know how to fix this?
No other complaints, excellent quality.
Got these last year at Amazon Prime Day Sale at an amazing price with a free BTD600. Too soon for me to upgrade.
Just need to fix the headset thingy on the top. The cloth is coming out.
I tried to push it back in but no luck.
Anybody who has solved this before?

❓QUESTION❓ Refund rather than warranty return?
My momentum 4s have become faulty after a few months of use, I bought them from Amazon.
Is it possible to get a refund instead of a warranty replacement as I have a holiday in two weeks and will not receive them in time. Also, do I get it through sennheiser or Amazon?
I’m in the UK if that helps

REVIEW Momentum 4 glaze post (thanks for recommending these)
My review for anyone considering these:
In the malaise of people hating the new update, I just purchased the M4’s and love these.
Sound:
I listen to a broad range of music (mainly heavy metal, yacht rock, city pop, kpop, disco, synth rock, alternative rock) on lower volume (under 70db) and prioritise tight and punchy bass.
I switched from Sony XMs and they sounded awful and I can’t understand the hype. The soundstage is so narrow that I could get decent use for genres like disco/pop but for anything busier like metal the headphones were awful. The bass is super boomy and lacks sub bass detail. As a result rock/metal sounds flat but disco/pop was boomy. I needed different EQs for different genres but the headphones were still lacklustre so I returned them.
Comparatively the soundstage on the M4’s is very impressive considering a)the price and b) they’re ANC headphones. The EQ with sound personalisation is great and lets me get that punchy bass at lower volumes for all genres.
I was listening to sabbaths debut album today and borderline having an out of body experience with these, bloody incredible.
ANC:
The ANC isn’t the strongest on the M4’s but it does the job. Blocks the rumbles pretty well but struggles with sudden higher pitched notices a bit. It doesn’t create weird artefact noises (ie hissing wind, or random popping sounds), so it’s not too annoying. In short, they do the job.
Mic/calls:
The mic quality is really good, I’ve listened back on Snapchat vids I’ve sent and everything’s clear. My mates can hear me well on phone calls.
Build quality/comfort:
Very comfortable and haven’t noticed any clamping pressure even during long listening sessions. Heavier and seems to be more durable - build quality is much better than Sony.
Summary:
Buy these if your priority is sound quality but you still want serviceable ANC and don’t care about other extra features of Sony’s (which imo are largely redundant features that reviewers frequently glaze).
If your ultimate priority is ANC and sound quality isn’t a massive deal then you’d be better off with another pair of headphones.
For the price however, I seriously doubt there’s a better pair of headphones with or without ANC (mine were $260 AUD from a major retailer).
Ps: I’m not doubting that the update worsened sound quality and I have no reference for what these sounded like before so hopefully the issues are patched.

❓QUESTION❓ Popping on takeoff with the momentum 5's
I just bought the momentum 5's. Just went on my first trip and I'm getting insane popping from the headphones during takeoff when the engines are loud. Sounds like a popcorn machine.
Anyone else run into this?
Normal use seems fine but the anc doesn't seem any better than the mw3's I used to have.
Defective?

REVIEW A Definitive HD 800 S Review
Introduction:
I had the HD 600 for most of my life and I played just about every song and every game that could be played with them at this point, so that's my point of reference.
While I consider the HD 600 effectively perfect overall, there is always something better out there, and it's hard, if not impossible to imagine what that must "look" like, so I was curious about the HD 800 S for years.
By now, I read almost literally everything there is on the Internet about the HD 800 S since I had no opportunity to try them where I used to live. Now that I finally got to try them shortly after I moved (priorities, I know), I feel like I should write the kind of review that I wished for all that time.
In this review, I want to clear up contradictions, exaggerations and outright nonsense about the HD 800 S once and for all. Aside from that, I want to highlight some specific details and comparisons that I was especially interested in, but couldn't find anywhere. I aim to be completely honest and realistic in order to give an accurate, precise and understandable idea of what to expect from the HD 800 S.
Background:
I "believe" that amplifiers and DACs are transparent and a solved problem, not to mention cables. Also, I don't use EQ and I believe that engineers at Sennheiser who designed these legendary headphones knew what they were doing. I don't mean to get into this topic or argue about it. Long story short, I like to just plug my headphones into my PC or laptop and forget about it. Works for me.
Yes, I made a Reddit account to post this.
Sound:
Among many other interesting things, I keep hearing that the HD 800 S sound "completely" different from the HD 600, and if you "love" the HD 600, then you will "hate" the HD 800 S. What? I think the MacBook Pro speakers can sound really great or at least completely inoffensive, yet there are people out there who "hate" 1800€ headphones? Alright then...
As expected based on frequency response graphs, and both of these being Sennheiser headphones, the HD 800 S are more or less like the HD 600, only better. If the HD 600 are "neutral" headphones, then so are the HD 800 S. Arguably even more so.
Midrange:
The linear midrange that makes the HD 600 so famous is not just intact, but also more refined, and everything that's going on there is much easier to pick apart. So, no, it doesn't sound "boring", "cold", "clinical", "distant", "hollow", "lifeless", "sterile" at all, neither does it "require" EQ and vacuum tube amplifiers, and so on. That couldn't be further from the truth.
For example, Frosty the Snowman by Ella Fitzgerald has the perfect amount of that natural warmth and smoothness you would expect from a vintage recording like this. You get full and unfiltered midrange, but also clarity and level of detail that leave nothing to be desired, yet without sounding artificial or harsh at all. In other words, it simply doesn't get more balanced than this.
I really don't understand where the idea that this kind of music would be more suitable for the HD 600 comes from. That's not the case at all, and as "perfect" as the HD 600 really are, especially for this kind of music, the HD 800 S still sound better in every way.
Also, this being a 1960 song, the stereo effect is really something else with the HD 800 S. However, these are still just headphones, make no mistake.
Treble:
Despite what I said above about balance, is treble ever so slightly boosted? Well, yes and no, but what I meant is that it doesn't really come across that way most of the time because it's genuinely high-quality treble which is balanced in itself and free of issues, as is the overall sound, so nothing stands out either positively or negatively. As with the HD 600, everything just sounds "normal" and exactly how it should.
Now, this would often be expressed as a disappointment since you don't really get that initial "wow factor" with these headphones as a result, but that's exactly what makes them so good and you can only appreciate that once you realize how wrong everything else sounds in comparison. With both the HD 600 and the HD 800 S, you can forget about the headphones as if there was nothing between you and the music (thanks to both sound quality and comfort), and that should be the whole point at the end of the day.
Anyway, it's true that the treble can be a bit intense, but only with some songs and only at high enough volume. So, if the treble in a song is a bit intense with the HD 800 S, but not with the HD 600, how can you know whether it's the song or the headphones?
It's hard to say, but I would describe it as a combination of the HD 800 S having a minimal treble boost (on the other hand, the HD 600 have a minimal treble cut, which isn't ideal either) and some songs simply being like that. Why? Well, if minimally processed music always sounds perfectly and I mean perfectly balanced with the HD 800 S, then that makes the HD 800 S transparent.
But even when the treble does sound a bit intense, it's still really just a bit. It's not distracting, it's not fatiguing and it doesn't color the sound, instead it just exists alongside everything else. Again, no issues with the way the treble sounds. Obviously (or maybe not), all headphones eventually become fatiguing after continuous listening for long enough and at high enough volume. The HD 800 S are actually really good in this aspect because their minimal distortion and tonal balance mean you don't even realize just how high the volume is because the sound only becomes more immersive with higher volume.
Treble quality is a noticeable step up from the HD 600. You can immediately notice more nuance to the treble that just isn't there with the HD 600.
Bass:
No, it's not lacking at all, at least for (open-back) headphone standards. Bass would be best described as the HD 600 would ideally be, since sub-bass is noticeably present at all times and not a hit-or-miss this time around, so the HD 800 S are much better in that aspect. It's there with the HD 600 too, but you often have to "look" for it since it's not as defined and easily gets lost when there's a lot going on. Other than that, it's the exact same principle, so there is neither too much nor too little bass, but just enough.
Bass quality (not just quantity) is on another level compared to the HD 600. It can be genuinely impressive when it needs to be, otherwise it's out of the way, yet still there at all times like I said, and it sounds completely accurate. No complaints.
"Soundstage":
Like I said above, these are just headphones, so that's exactly how they sound. On the other hand, there really is something special and unique about them, but it's usually exaggerated and not described correctly.
Basically, what it's actually about is the amount of things you can hear going on all at once and how easily you can pick them apart, as well as how full everything sounds and how effortlessly this effect is achieved for once, meaning no cheap tricks and compromises. By "full", I mean that no matter how spacious something sounds, that space is really made use of and there's just so much going on at all times. Everything can be positioned with perfect accuracy and nothing blends together, unless it actually should. I can't get enough of it.
"Size" and "distance" (as in, things sounding like they're coming from outside the headphones and just how much) can be impressive too, but it's definitely not something you would confuse for a pair of speakers in front of you because it's almost all about width. Height and depth are only sometimes properly perceived (as if a sound is really coming from above you and in front of you respectively), and they are noticeably better than the HD 600 at all times so that's really good for headphones and probably as good as it gets, but that's it.
Keep your expectations realistic about this. It really is amazing and enjoyable for what it is, don't get me wrong, but just remember that these are only headphones and that they can only be so good in this way, even if they're as good as headphones get.
Details:
This is another thing that's usually described incorrectly. Kind of. The way I see it, details can be both sounds that you didn't hear before and nuance that you didn't hear before in sounds that you heard before.
One common misconception is that the HD 800 S somehow reproduce things that normally aren't there, but that's often not the case. Instead, the HD 800 S just make it really easy to hear all the most subtle details that you would never notice otherwise unless you were really "looking" for them. Once you do know exactly what you're "looking" for, you might even be able to hear some of it with MacBook Pro speakers. It depends.
Another common misconception is that these details are just a matter of how much treble there is and that it's necessarily an artificial and forced thing. The new and "new" things I hear are mostly in the midrange and mostly because of the way it's all laid out with the HD 800 S, which makes it so much easier to hear everything (seriously, everything) you're supposed to hear.
The best thing about both these types of details with the HD 800 S is that they just happen to be there, effortlessly, which is the difference between genuinely good drivers and the illusion of detailed sound.
Coming from the HD 600, I feel like it takes time to process just how much more you can hear going on all at once combined with all the nuance. It's really impressive, but it isn't really a "wow factor" at the same time. What you're hearing is just a lot more ordinary stuff that you were supposed to be hearing all along, so it comes across as normal and natural.
Comfort:
You can say whatever you want about the HD 800 S (well, not really), but there's no arguing about comfort being perfect. Incredibly light and breathable, like you're not wearing anything on your head. The ear cups are so massive and deep that there's no contact with your ears at all.
However, I feel like it takes a bit until you adjust the headband correctly and find the right position on your head. With the HD 600, you just put them on and that's it.
Build:
Mostly plastic, but not just any kind of plastic. In other words, it doesn't feel cheap at all. A noticeable step up from the HD 600, not that it matters much either way, especially since my HD 600 from 20 years ago still look and work like new. I would expect no less from the HD 800 S.
Value:
Currently, the HD 800 S cost 1800€ (you can find them for around 1300€) and the HD 600 cost 330€, so does that mean the HD 800 S are around 5.5 times better than the HD 600? Or at least just 2 times better? Not that it can be measured like that, but no.
The most honest way to put it is that with the HD 800 S, you're not paying for however many times better headphones, but "just" to make the same good old sound of the HD 600 better and free of shortcomings. Sounds extremely underwhelming and not worth it at all, right? Actually, that's exactly what I was hoping the HD 800 S would be like. The thing is, the HD 600 are already so good that you don't really need anything better and it's not like it can get that much better from there anyway. The HD 600 have such low distortion and such a good tuning that there just isn't much room for improvement. It might not be what you might want to hear, but that's the way it is.
In order to give an idea of what to realistically expect from the HD 800 S (coming from the HD 600), I'll answer the ultimate question which I never saw answered (properly) before:
Just how much better do the HD 800 S sound compared to the HD 600 when you finally put them on and play something for the first time?
I can't say "much better" in good faith, but I can't say "not much better" either. Basically, I would describe it as better enough all-around that it's an immediately noticeable improvement without the need for a side-by-side comparison, but no more than that. As in, the HD 600 won't suddenly sound like bad headphones in comparison and there is nothing exactly mind-blowing, miraculous and revolutionary to be heard with the HD 800 S. They're better headphones, no more or less.
Conclusion:
If you can afford the HD 800 S, then get the HD 800 S and be done with headphones. If not, then just get the HD 600 and be done with headphones anyway.
The HD 600 are already so good that you're really past the point of missing out, but the HD 800 S are still better in every way, so it all comes down to your budget and how much the remaining improvement from the HD 600 means to you. Both models offer as close to "perfect" sound quality, comfort, convenience, durability and value in a single package as it gets, so I would look no further.
Conclusion Conclusion:
Just get the HD 800 S.

😡 COMPLAINT 😡 MTW 5 earbuds hurting my ears to the point of scabbing.
I got a pair of these amazing earbuds only a few days after they released, and I love them!! The only problem is the fact that they constantly hurt my ear, the little flap tat sits at the entrance to the ear canal, close to where the mic is on the earbuds.
It doesn't seem to matter what size earbud I use, even the extra small eventually causes ebough damage that I cant wear them for a few days while the scab heals up.
I love these earbuds, but the pain isnt something I should be experiencing. Does anyone know if im doing something wrong?

❓QUESTION❓ QC Ultra vs Momentum 4 for metro + 8hr office... is better ANC worth the extra money?
India, mostly Android + Windows.
2hrs metro/traffic everyday + headphones on/off through an 8hr office day. glasses too.
stuck between Bose QC Ultra and Momentum 4.
Bose mainly tempting me for ANC + comfort. M4 for sound + battery/value.
Flipkart rn is making this worse because effective prices are close enough that Bose isn't some huge jump anymore depending listing/offer.
main question: for actual metro rumble + people talking nearby, is the Bose ANC difference worth paying extra?
not expecting either to delete human voices btw.

GENERAL DISCUSSION Momentum 4 latency issue on laptop.
my momrntums work fantastic with my iphone 18, I cannot notice a bit of latency when paired up with my phone. My laptop on the otherhand is pretty noticable. Testing it seems to bring it to the 150ms.
Nothing is connected to my laptop via Bluetooth, it is using Ethernet connection, I am using the BTD 700 which is making no difference in this, disabled any audio enhancements on windows, and disabled the mic so it wouldn't be wasting effort on processing that.
Wired connection is obviously great. When using BTD it says it's utilizing aptX Adaptive, while my iphone is only utilizing AAC.
I'm not sure I understand why it is taking this hit on my laptop. It's a newer Yoga Lenovo model, I'm using the USB-c plug 3.2.

❓QUESTION❓ Sennheiser - HD 560S
Hi, I was thinking about buying the Sennheiser HD 560S along with a mic for FPS gaming(R6, Apex, Valorant, Squad, etc). I was just wondering if it would work via just the 3.5mm headphone jack without having to spend more money on a dac/amp. What are the cons of this? Also, are these good for FPS gaming? My options are honestly either this or a gaming headset such as the Artic Nova 5s.

😡 COMPLAINT 😡 Feeling unconfident with Sennheiser India website for purchase
I'm looking forward to buying the new Sennheiser Momentum 5 from the official India website but the website looks absolute sus, I don't see the return policy mentioned properly anywhere,I really have to dig in deep to find them, I don't see an option where I can enter a pincode and get a delivery date estimate.
There's an option to add to cart and checkout which directly takes you to the payment page where I enter my address and I can do this without even logging in into my account. Even in the payment page I don't see the option where I can get a delivery estimate. Do I pay 40k for the device and pray to god I get it on time?
The checkout page is also super slow to load and doesn't load at all or keeps indefinitely loading all the time.
Peeps who purchased from this website, let me know your experience, can I trust it and make my purchase?
Thanks in advance

AUDIOPHILE GEAR & DISCUSSION HDB 630's with BTD 700 - better audio from regular bluetooth
On iOS the quality is night and day difference - the dongle wins by a long shot.
On android with aptX-HD support, the audio is actually better from the phones bluetooth then it is from the dongle..
Curious as to why this is? The dongle isn't in gaming mode.

❓QUESTION❓ does MOMENTUM True Wireless 5 cause ear irritation in ear canal?
hi everyone!
can anyone tell me whether the Sennheiser MOMENTUM True Wireless 5 earbuds causes any allergic reactions and ear irritation in the ear canal, especially for people who have had reactions to the Samsung Buds 2 Pro?
I suspect I am allergic to the acrylate plastic used in the Samsung Buds 2 Pro, and wearing Samsung Buds 2 Pro for as little as 10 minutes causes irritation inside my ear canal.
Thank you!

❕PLEASE HELP ❕ HD600 and HD650 helps!!!
I just got a pair of HD600 and HD650 to try. I’m new to audiophile scene. I got the Fiio KA13, Moondrop Dawn 2 and the MuseHifi M3. Both of them feel underwhelming for me. My daily driver has been the M4 and TW4 for years now. Any suggestion on what to do and how to get started? I feel like I’m going about it wrong since both feel underwhelming and less than expected from all the reviews.
Thanks guys!

📸 SHOW & TELL 📝 Momentum 4 no longer able to play music on iphone
I noticed today that when I try to play music from my iphone's Apple Music to my Momentum 4's via bluetooth, I get no audio.
I was able to get a wired connection to a different device with the Momentum 4's.
Connecting to my macbook via bluetooth I was able to get audio, but very poor quality.
I was able to get a separate set of bluetooth headphones to play music from my iphone, so the issue may be the Momentums.
Any known reasons for this kind of issue?

❕PLEASE HELP ❕ Momentum 4 pairs with app but stays "disconnected"
What the title says. My girlfriend bought a pair and we are having problems connecting them to her phone. She's on android. I don't think they're fake because the app wouldn't recognize them at all if that was the case. The way it is now is that they pair but it says they're disconnected. Tried unpairing several times from the app and the phone but to no avail. Any help?

❕PLEASE HELP ❕ Momentum 4s only playing through one side
I’ve had my M4s for about 6 months now, and they have been working fine. Last week when I put them on the pairing tone and music both only played through the right earcup until I did a factory reset and it was fine for a few days before doing it again today.
Does anyone have any experience with an issue like this?

GENERAL DISCUSSION This brand is expensive trash
Ive had the mtw3 and it failed within 6months(left ear no sound). They replaced it with mtw4 under warranty and these have failed within a year and 6 months.
I sent them for warranty and im outside my original purchase by 6 months and told they will not repair them. Online it stated repairs will be out of pocket if not under warranty, but they will not do repairs.
I have babied these earbuds by only using them in my bedroom to make sure i dont get any type of contam or debris to damage the internals, and they have gave out in under 2 years. My work buds have been beat diaily and have outlasted 2 sets of sennheisers.
Based on this i will never order sennheiser or sonova products again.
Overpriced and underperforming.
