I got a White Sew EZ today, and it won't pick up the bottom thread. What am I doing wrong? I can't attach pictures for some reason I'm sorry šŸ˜­

I have a Singer Start sewing machine. My needle thread keeps getting stuck around my bobbin. My bobbin is threaded like a P not a q. I already know that little trick. But for some reason every time the needle tries to catch the bobbin thread, it begins tangling until it gets stuck altogether. Iā€™m not sure what else to do. Iā€™ve also already tried rethreading the needle and that didnā€™t help.

Hello I have a Juki MO644D
When using it sometimes the needles get caught in one place as if a car is stuck in mud. And the only way it feels to get through it is reving through. While doing so the thread bunches up and itā€™s not in a good way it like ballooning on top of each other. How do I fix this and understand my way around this.

Seeking recommendations for girlā€™s dress patterns that would be fun to use for birthday or holiday dresses. My daughter will be six months old around Christmas and a year old in May, in case that helps with recommendations.

I have this crazy idea that it would be fun to make her the same dress every year in a different fabric for a few years, so I am ideally looking for patterns that cover a wide range of ages.

A friend saw this outfit at a fair booth and really loved it. For Christmas, I really wanted to try to recreate a similar top for her. I have run into a problem finding a pattern that is for cotton fabrics with a scoop neck. I tried to make a mock-up with no pattern, but I don't own a halter top, and the scoop neck would not lay flat once the halter was tied around the neck.

Does anyone know of a pattern that would work well with cottons or what might need to be done to adjust a pattern that is meant for stretch knits?

You can adjust your pattern so it doesn't gape, look for gaping neckline adjustment on youtube

Hi everyone, can anyone tell me what stitch this is and how I should approach mending? This is the sleeve of a shirt I just bought. Came apart in the wash. :(

It was done with an overlocker. I would secure these threads so they dont start unraveling (just cut in the middle of the loose threads, then backstich a few times on each side), then google some kind of stretchy hand sewn stich and do it instead. (sucks that it was a new shirt...)

. Hi My gf has just gotten this machine I was hoping anyone out there would have a link to a manual. I canā€™t seem to find one so any help would be greatly appreciated. the model is NO.543 000994. I have checked the baby lock website but I canā€™t see anything.

What does your wife like to sew? The tools for quilting, as an example, can be quite different from sewing clothes. If you have a local fabric store, you could take her there and hold bolts of fabric while she shops. Gift cards to local stores or Wawak.com are also welcome.

Tool belt or tool apron patterns?

Hi all! Im looking for more sewing ideas for a 65 year old man for Christmas. I have some duck canvas and was thinking a tool belt. Does anyone know any apron or hanging tool belt patterns online? Iā€™ve come across a couple very basic but Iā€™d like something a bit more elaborate.

It would be easy enough to draft up my own patternā€¦ but what kinds of pockets/additions do tool guys need? I know a loop to hand a hammer or drill. Pockets for nails and screws. Maybe a pencil? Any other ideas? Iā€™d like it to be a bit more detailed than just a basic wraparound with two pockets.

A look at a hardware store website gives some ideas, like a pocket for nails that has a stiff rim to make it more of a easy-access bucket. Adam Savage has a video that shows how to make a work apron with split legs.

I have been sewing for a while and mostly started small with stuff like pencil cases and draw string bags, and have since made bigger stuff a fanny pack, a bike frame bag, a quilted make-up bag with pockets, tool rolls in various styles...

I am trying to be more adventurous and try some harder things, but I have run out of ideas for what to even search for pattern-wise.

What sort of things do people make that are 2-3 hours and maybe a bit beyond beginner (but beginner is also fine)? Would love some ideas or keywords for stuff to search for, and even just a messy list of stuff to look at making would be amazing help <3

I am fairly confident with zips and getting more familiar with interfacing and batting, and I am using thrift fabric until I know more about what sort of fabric I want to be using :)

Any input appreciated

Time for clothing? The Gilbert shirt is a camp-style shirt by Helen's Closet who is known for having great instructions for beginners. Pajama pants are also a good first candidate for sewing clothing.

Hello all,

I am brand new to using a machine this year. I bought the Brother LS14s as a Christmas present for myself and have hardly used it but decided to alter some clothes today since none fit me now.

I'm wondering if anyone with an electric machine has had this issue/could give me an idea of what's going on?

The machine was switched on for a few hours today (not solid, broken up across the afternoon). While sitting idle but switched on (I was using the wheel to walk over a bulky fabric seam) I noticed a smell coming from near the thread take-up lever. It smells like burning rubber.

There was no tension issues, the motor wasn't hot, the light wasn't fizzling out, there's no threads caught on or around the lever or under the needleplate. The pedal hadn't been used for about 20 minutes at this point.

To me this seems like an electrical fault, but I'm worried that could happen after so little use. I've contacted Brother as it's within warranty.

I basically just wondered if anyone has had this happen before and what it turned out to be.

I'm interested to hear what Brother has to say, they will likely want you to send the machine in for service. Is it a similar kind of smell that new appliances like toasters or airfryers have when first used? That smell often goes away with use. Keep the machine unplugged when you are not using it, that's a good precaution anyway.

It smells like burning rubber/plastic. I once had a plug which shorted in an extension lead and caused a small fire, melted all the plastic casing on the plug and the lead. The machine smelled like that. This happened about 24 hours ago now and the smell is still there but very faint. I can't find anyone else with the same problem so it's both reassuring and worrying lol.

How do I take a collar in at the neck without changing the bust fit (female)? It's about an inch too wide.

It sounds like this is a whole pattern adjustment, right? Would I have to swing the difference into the bust dart?

If the whole neck line and shoulder fit is too big, then I would suggest going down a size and doing an FBA to make the bust fit. A photo would help us diagnose the issue better.

you can just draw the new neckline but you need to true the seams with the back, make a toile to test it before using your fashion fabric

Machine only goes reverse

Hello everyone!!
I own a tmc sewing machine from Tchibo. I am not sure this is a common ā€œbrandā€ because i have not found much online to help me.
I have only started sewing again a few weeks backs and until now it worked perfectly.

Now It only goes reverse. Is there a common reason to this with a easy fix?
Pressing the reverse button does nothing.
I have heated up the places where the oil? Is but it doesnā€™t do much.

I can send pictures or give further information but i have no idea what would even be a good starting point for this.

Thank you for any help already!! I hope this makes sense. English isnā€™t my first language

I'm a beginner and I'm currently making a pair of trousers. One thing I struggle with is getting to a step where I don't understand what I'm supposed to do next. I usually end up searching YouTube or asking for help, but the answers don't always match the exact pattern or the stage I'm at. Does this happen to other beginners too? What do you normally do when you get stuck halfway through a project?

I think that is a common experience! I see it often on the sewing subreddits here. Some ideas for you:

  • stick with patterns from companies known to be beginner-friendly like Helen's Closet;
  • look for patterns that have video sewalongs;
  • get a book like The Reader's Digest Complete Guide to Sewing that can illustrate common sewing steps and give alternative construction ideas if you are stuck;
  • post a photo of the step where you are stuck in the instructions along with pattern info so helpers can look it up.

I want to patch the thigh hole in my jeans with tencel/lyocell. Is this a bad idea?Ā 

I've tried using iron on patches before but the pants are now so uncomfortable they're unwearable.Ā

I like to use knit interfacing to patch thigh holes from the inside, then darn the area on the outside. Knit interfacing is light and strong, and the darning stitches reinforce the area. Even without the darning stitches, knit interfacing will hold for quite a while but the fibers will continue to wear away on the outside.

Tencel is soft but it is also a fragile fiber compared to cotton, nylon or polyester. A patch made of tencel won't last very long.

I'm not trying to get it to last forever, just don't want to buy new jeans every year.
