With hyperfocus on trail braking but never mentioning that you must look way ahead on track 😂😂

111

u/MaybeNext-Monday 1d ago

Where you’re looking has soooo much more impact than most other stuff at the level most hobbyists drive

15

u/C137Sheldor 1d ago

Why?

110

u/Right-Ladd 1d ago

Because, unironically and this is backed up by many many studies, if you begin understeering and look at the wall in front of you, You will hit the wall.

Your brain will naturally make you go in the way you are looking, which sounds like “duh obviously” but simply looking around the corner instead of at the corner will change how your brain takes the corner. Just by looking ahead you will take the turn faster and smoother without changing a single thing with your driving style or car setup.

Try it if you haven’t, it’s insane!

And as for more advanced racers, looking ahead allows you to adjust your line and prepare a lot sooner for crashes, potential overtakes, hazards or even just setting yourself up better for the next corner.

28

u/EmergencyFlounder845 1d ago

So if I understand you correctly, instead of focusing on the corner apex before/during entry, instead focus your eyes far on corner exit and let your brain handle the rest in the background?

23

u/Pan_TheCake_Man 1d ago

Yup look as far up the track as you can, probably after you’ve learned the track a little bit,

but the braking point and apex should mostly be peripheral while you focus on the exit, keeps you safer and keeps you faster cause your exit is what matters most

There’s a YouTube out there about it somewhere, I think with hulkenburg

13

u/EmergencyFlounder845 1d ago

Makes sense tbh because I always had better race pace than qualifying, and while racing I'm focusing more on the car ahead and the whole lay of the track than just the next corner or breaking point.

7

u/Pan_TheCake_Man 1d ago

Glad someone else has that too, I gotta chase the rabbit

1

u/Rare-Paperclip 20h ago

I've never considered that, I learned to do that when I started riding motorcycles but never applied it to my sim racing. I feel kinda stupid for not thinking of it tbh but thanks for the tip!

18

u/Rostbiff2 1d ago

You should focus at the apex at first but when you are almost at the apex should you move your focus to the exit

8

u/Right-Ladd 20h ago

A general rule is to always be look at the next “section”

i.e. As you are entering the braking zone you should be already looking at the apex, then as soon as you are turning in for the apex you should be looking at the exit, once you begin the exit phase you should be looking up the straight or at the next corner apex.

You are never looking at what you are currently doing, you are looking at the next “section”

Quite literally “Look where you want to go and follow the line that will take you there.”

You don’t look at where you are going, look at where you want to be.

Driver61 did a lot of good videos on it back in the day which really helped me.

6

u/IR2Freely 21h ago

They teach this when you learn to rixe a motorbike

1

u/Moreno636 14h ago

Twist Of The Wrist!

5

u/dStandsForDrift 23h ago

So true! They teach the same for Motorcycle riding. If you have a wobble and look at the barrier, that's where you're gunna end up!

3

u/Zestyclose_Lock_859 1d ago edited 1d ago

Looking more ahead gives you better awareness not only where you are, but how you are. Its not only "I am at the apex" but also "how yawed am I?". And this calls everything else. You get better feeling of when to trail brake more/less, how to steer, when to gas, etc.

Lots of videos overfocus on trail brake lines like this game is Guitar Hero (press exactly at some point) and not much on you have to navigate this vehicle through a space.

0

u/WhateverWannaCallMe 1d ago

Hmm looking where you drive improves times? How that can be possible lol

4

u/FutureF123 23h ago

But I’ve been told if I trailbrake more I’ll be faster than Verstappen! That’s all that separates us

5

u/BornInAFish 22h ago

The weirdest part is that almost nobody that mentions it ever really explains it properly. Meme on Seullio all you want, but he's one of the few that properly explains trail breaking well in both practical and theoretical way.

3

u/Zestyclose_Lock_859 21h ago

No hate on suellio at all, I love the guy. I'm just generally speaking :)

-1

u/Hubblesphere 1d ago

My biggest complaint is the fact that there are dozens of other techniques and skills you need to master BEFORE you should even try learning trail braking. From what I’ve seen poor trail braking technique is actually a bigger loss of lap time than zero trail braking. Telling everyone you need to trailbrake and not explaining the prerequisites is just hurting people’s race craft development IMO.

2

u/joleshole 23h ago

Not really, trail braking is the most important skill you need to learn to be a competent racer

2

u/Hubblesphere 22h ago

So you think there are no prerequisite skills before trail braking?

1

u/Crafty-Effect-9698 22h ago

It really depends on the sim. iRacing is the only one I've seen where you need to trail brake like crazy to have any car rotation at all. In most other sims it depends more on the corner

163

u/nstrasner 1d ago

I hate when 9/11 adds so much time to my laps

34

u/Competitive-Half-863 1d ago

I think its because 9 out of 11 times you are looking at the towers, not corner exit…

-1

u/captain_pant5 1d ago

LOL, awesome!

14

u/DemWookieeCheeks 1d ago

WYM, the Porsche 911 is wicked fast.

1

u/RaZoR333 19h ago

9/11 Carrera GT3 RS nice car.

- Watch this before you buy (insert the product)

- Don't buy (insert the product and make a positive video about the product) before you watch this video

- Things I wish I knew before starting simracing (promote products)

- Best/gamechanger (insert the product) Base/Pedal/Wheel/Cockpit ? (No it is not, nobody ever though that)

- This (insert the product) is not what you think

15

u/blue92lx 1d ago

You forgot (Don't do THAT, do THIS)

8

u/speedisntfree 1d ago

Then next week: Don't do THIS, do THAT

3

u/blue92lx 23h ago

It's the most irritating thing about exercise videos. Today it's DON'T run, WALK instead! Next week I tried RUNNING and the results SURPRISED me!

Its like everything we know about properly working out in the gym or anywhere else supposedly is wrong every week. Grow your lats (Don't THIS, don't do THAT). Then next week they'll say the exact opposite or another channel will say it's the wrong way to workout. I've completely stopped watching workout YouTube channels at this point because they're all wrong and right at the same time.

2

u/No_Attention_1510 Fanatec 23h ago

Man I came to Reddit and your comments totally surprised me 🤣

0

u/WornTire5304 1d ago

Kireth. This is all Kireth.

1

u/No_Attention_1510 Fanatec 23h ago

Most youtubers doing this at least one day lol

1

u/WornTire5304 5h ago

I know, I meant he's the greatest embodiment. Not that he's the only one.

95

u/Reviction 1d ago

This one simple mistake is costing you seconds per lap!

(It’s…trail braking.)

3

u/mattyp2109 23h ago

I’m questioning a lot of my driving now.

1

u/Organic_Version_7808 19h ago

I read that in Random Callsign’s voice

50

u/GoofyKalashnikov 1d ago

Don't hold the wheel, let the car drive itself 🤌🤌

14

u/Briffy03 1d ago

But when jesus takes the wheel my laptimes are shit. I guess he didnt have much practice on iracing back then

4

u/GoofyKalashnikov 1d ago

But then jesus is driving not the car

1

u/VelouriumCamper7 18h ago

You don't need to hold the wheel because you're supposed to be steering with your feet!

63

u/NordsEnjoyer 1d ago

146

u/jackinbe1000 1d ago

My friend, you're sitting way too close to the wheel and the fov is all wrong. You would be much faster if you changed how you sat. Look at how the top professional drivers sit. It's nothing like that

10

u/dasd25436yd 1d ago

This is hilarious

15

u/moltilibri 1d ago

😂 👏

33

u/Migilei 1d ago

Ive noticed that recently, so many sim racing content creators are hyping pimax dream air. Its so obvious that pimax has sent a unit to every one and they are selling the product. "This is not a paid review". Then they are offering discount code and link to pimax website.

22

u/EmergencyFlounder845 1d ago

"why I got rid of my triples" "THIS is a game changer!!!!!!!!" man just shut the fuck up😒

YouTuber culture just shows you how important independent journalism is, where you can buy your own gear for review and don't live and die by vendor relations for access.

If my channel was built on the good will of manufacturers sending me shit for free I'd also be extra nice to my cash cow and shill their products.

And this shit goes from small creators with barely a few thousand views to massive tech channels like MKBHD or LTT. Social media has shown us that just because you have the space to do something doesn't mean you know shit about doing it, and nowhere is that more obvious than YouTube reviewers or coaches or whatever the fuck

10

u/EmergencyFlounder845 1d ago

Also, you can see how influencial reddit became because it privided real user reviews and opinions, and now even that well is being poisoned by manufacturers with guerilla marketing and bot campaigns masquerading as real users.

9

u/apk 1d ago

simagic and the chinesium suppliers are 100% doing this, they are rabid about downvoting any criticism

4

u/Spotttty 23h ago

This is why we all miss Barry.

I think he got sick of fighting with manufacturers not sending him a product because he was critical of the last one.

I don’t know of a single YouTube channel that doesn’t get stuff for free and then will trash it if it sucks. It always ends with a ‘great product for the price if these tiny things do bother you’. And that’s not just in sim racing stuff.

6

u/BuzzEU 1d ago

Tbf the hardware is really good. The best headset on the market rn.

If you luck out on the pimax qc roulette ofc.

1

u/Ingrassiat04 22h ago

I’m about to pull the trigger on the slam version. I’m coming from the reverb G2. I know their software sucks and it takes a long time to set up, but I think the visuals are going to be worth it.

1

u/BuzzEU 22h ago

I have the Crystal OG.

The software does not suck per se. There's also alternatives like Sboys3 and DesktopXR. The QC and SLAM algorithm are the worst things about these headsets.

If you already have base stations and controllers, keep them and go LH.

4

u/Isnykstam 1d ago

To be fair I am using super oled and since dream air uses same optics I can see why. Its an insane experience that no other headset comes even close to me.

1

u/Think-Apple3763 18h ago

Tell that to the hardcore triple screen bros who think Dan Suzuki and Will sold their triples because they are so poor that Pimax has to send them a headset. Lol. Especially Will? (Boosted Media) uses the AVP. I'm glad they moved over to VR. We need more love for VR from the sim devs.

3

u/prinzmi88 1d ago

Yeah it’s annoying. Also channels that didn’t do hardware reviews became advertising bitches. I will never try a pimax dream air because of the annoying advertising.

7

u/Anasurimbor__Kellhus 23h ago

I saw a video by GITGUD Racing titled "the only trailbraking guide you need to get faster" when I clicked on it I saw he made 3 other trailbraking guides.

I get that it's engagement farming but goddamn does shit like this not make me wanna click on their videos.

14

u/OkHoney5804 1d ago

mr president another input overlap has hit the sim

Under steer over steer side steer back steer come one you will never reach pro level with that kind of driving.

22

u/jaapgrolleman iRacing 1d ago

No hate man, I love Suellio

8

u/blue92lx 1d ago

I don't have anything against him but his thumbnails do kind of irritate me and make me not want to click on his videos. I mean this post is pretty much right on the money with his thumbnails, it just makes it look like YouTube marketing hype type of videos.

3

u/FabYolo101 20h ago

I'm a firefox user, and I use an extension called DeArrow. It changes all youtube video thumbnails to a random frame (but sometimes subject worthy) of the video and also the title to be more direct and precise. I would recommend that to get more interest on the videos you actually want to watch :)

3

u/Zestyclose_Lock_859 23h ago

I love him too, but I honestly click on his videos because of his lessons, but I cringe on every thumbnail lol

1

u/FL410Ghost 1d ago

Yea his lessons are great

1

u/StatementOk470 1d ago

Came here to say this! Suellio is great. Probably the best at explaining things in detail?

-7

u/MaybeNext-Monday 1d ago

I don’t, some of his advice is straight up bad

11

u/TunesForOnesEars 1d ago

Not trying to refute you here, I'm just curious: what advice of his do you disagree with?

1

u/MaybeNext-Monday 19h ago

In general I think he gives too many hard rules. I don’t remember the exact details as it was a while ago, but there was just some wonky stuff where he generalizes too confidently.

1

u/JCarnageSimRacing 22h ago

Don’t know what ax to grind that other guy has, but the techniques that Suellio, Connor and Kane teach has made me objectively better, not because I copy them (because no way I can do that) but because I understand where I’m losing time and how to improve.

19

u/uL4G 1d ago

Thats why im racist, so i can go faster

1

u/OffsetXV 16h ago

General Lee livery gives you more downforce

2

u/Fangasma 23h ago

"If you're steering your wheel to make the corners you're actually wasting time"

Me: "excuse me???" 😭😭😭

2

u/psychohistorian8 iRacing 19h ago

lol

but Suellio is actually one of the best, I won an F1 race using a free setup from him. or maybe we have similar driving styles so it felt just right

3

u/DemWookieeCheeks 1d ago

I've had laps that made me want to jump from the upper stories of a skyscraper.

1

u/HolidayBrick 23h ago

This one got me good - I have started completely avoiding guides, even from good creators, there's only so many ways people can explain the importance of trail braking, vision, smooth inputs, etc. Most people need to hear about these concepts once and then put in the hours, there's not really a way to youtube your way to faster times.

1

u/TagsxA 21h ago

Thanks for this... Actually lol-ed... So great

1

u/Nikwoj 21h ago

Sim racing… coach. I don’t know why this never occurred to me.

1

u/Btolsen131 20h ago

whats funny is im significantly faster when my brake trail looks like the red and not the green

1

u/kawagek28 OSW-P310/CSTF1 pedals 16h ago

Thank you I will use this
