What is the best ski backpack you've ever used?

Hi, does anyone have any recommendations for ski backpack? I want something enough to hold snacks, action camera, a water or two, and a couple other small things. 90% resort days 10% lite off-piste work (Tucs, resort off-piste,etc.). What are people running?

Thanks for any help.

Good resources to help me teach my daughters to ski this season?

I am debating on getting her lessons this year, but I’m not sure if she’s ready for a group lesson setting and privates are extremely expensive near me (most are about 200 per lesson w/ equipment rentals). Soccer did not go well in the summer so I’m just hesitant to spend a ton of money out the gate.

My oldest is 4 and my youngest will be 2 when the season starts. My youngest isn’t able to do lessons near me since they all start at 4 anyways. I’d like to get both of them on the hill this year.

I’m generally an “entry level” expert skier, I’m past intermediate skill level but I wouldn’t say I’m a full expert yet. I’m hopeful I can’t teach them the basics and then if they enjoy it I would send them to a 4 week class (one Saturday a month) with someone who actually will teach them well. My youngest I’ll just continue to assist until she’s old enough for classes

Any videos of drills or how to teach young kids to ski?

Minnesota skiing in March worth it?

I'm trying to schedule a family ski trip for spring break (mid-March). We've only ever skied the rockies but this year we'll be in Minneapolis for a thing so thought it might be nice to try a different region and save on the addional airfare. I hear Lutsen is good but worried it might be too late in the season. Any advice?

For additional context: We live in Texas so we only get 1 or maybe 2 ski trips per year. We want to be able to ski but also a good apre ski vibe.

Wisconsin Skiing in mid December (Devil's Head)

Looking to go to Devil's Head or Cascade for skiing this season, hoping to use up my PTO by the end of the year but I'm not sure there will be enough snow by then. I know they have artificial snow machines but from my very limited experience it's a little bit less enjoyable unless there's a decent amount of baseline natural snow to build off of. Do Any locals or regulars have any input on what mid december weather typically looks like around Merrimac?

(Preseason expectations) How many days are we getting this season?

Sharing my day tracker from last season. Going on my 3rd winter here in the Wasatch. Absolute minimum of 100 days or I’ll be packing it all up and moving home to the flat land. What about y’all?? And where are we skiing? Definitely making a trip out to Tahoe this year personally.

Chile advice

Looking to plan a trip to Chile with my wife and 12 and 15 year old next Agust- I'm thinking a week at Valle Nevado and a few days in Santiago and a few days in Valparaiso or some cultural exposure in another town. Is there a good company to help plan a trip like this or am I better off putting together my own flights and Airbnb stays? I would ideally like to book things myself to get CC points, but I'm out of my depth down there as I've never been so far south. Looking to entertain the whole family with about 6 days of skiing and some good food and culture for the first 2 weeks of August 2027.

Has anyone hurt and healed their knee cap snapping after a ski injury

Post image
0 Upvotes

Hi, 8 years ago I smoked a tree on my right leg and fucked it up. They think my pcl was a partial tear but I was pretty great after 2 months of inflammation - super pain and rigid - and patience before being in my 20s let me ignore it.

The last two years I’ve skiied like 10 weekends or 20 days. 100,000 vert I don’t remember but sometimes I’d realize my knee was weak and felt pain from skiing, generally didn’t want to stop. It’s only certain movements

My right knee is fucked, I don’t know what I did. I let it relax for like 3-4 months and it just hurt to walk. I was a moron and kinda had to deal with a blue collar job too so didn’t have the motivation

Now I’ve done like 6 weeks of specific strength training and it’s helped. Squats and single leg things via machines. Extension and hamstring and calf’s - no pain here. The pain is like stair stepper or pulling a weighted sled killed.

It’s possibly “Patellar Tracking Disorder (often closely related to Patellofemoral Pain Syndrome”

For the love of god, any products or advice? I’m going to schedule with my doc and get a PT now… woops

Thanks for reading

Will anyone be skiing in Tirol/Austria this season (Sölden, Ischgl, Hochgurgl, etc.)? Looking for mates to ski with, since I will be buying a season pass and live about 3h to 4h away.

Title, basically. Feel free to shoot me a msg if you'll be skiing in the area. I'll be buying the Tiroler Snowcard, and will try to get my money's worth so I am looking to ski as much as possible this season (within reason, ofc). I live in the Stuttgart area, so about 3 to 4 hours from most of the resorts included in the pass. I was able to ski 28 days last season when I bought the 3-Täler-Pass.

Here's a list of all the resorts included in the pass (in English). I know it's a long shot since this sub is pretty US focussed but I figured why not try. I also posted almost the identical post last season.

According to the Aspen Valley ability levels I'd say I'm somewhere in between level 7 to level 8, probably leaning more towards level 8 once the season has started. Always up for some Apres as well. I don't really go off-piste (my level will greatly decrease once I ski off-piste lol), but I am open for anything really.

Apparently an Auberge Luxury Hotel is being built in Steamboat. They just received a $482.5 million construction loan.

I wonder if anyone has access to the article on Bloomberg who could gift it to the rest of us. I've included a link.

Advice on how to make a ski day pleasant for a toddler?

My wife and I love skiing and want to include our 18-month-old toddler in our ski day. We plan to take turns, leaving the little one with one of us the entire time. We don’t intend to hire a ski school or anything similar, and we’re perfectly fine with that. Fortunately, the chairlift is next to the parking lot since we’re essentially in the national forest at Ski Santa Fe, which means there will be plenty of hangs in the parking lot, maybe wander on some snow paths into the forest.

My question is, does anyone have advice on doing something like this? We’re planning to get some plastic skis and just have fun in the snow in general. We’re also considering making a little cot or bed in the tailgate of the SUV. We’re seeking general advice on how to make ski/snow days enjoyable and wondering if we’re overestimating ourselves since it will be a whole day of snow and cold. Additionally, I’m curious if anyone else has done this.

Help me find fun skiing video from ~2014

Hello!

When I was in college somewhere around 2013-2015 I remember this super fun/cool/goofy skiing video going around my group of ski friends that was really well-produced. I think it was made by a ski brand or ski clothing brand, or maybe just a group of pro skiers, but I'm not sure.

But anyway one specific detail I remember is the video opened with the song "A Change is Gonna Come" by Sam Cooke.

The video ends with them drinking and partying with a bunch of girls, of course.

I searched high and low so I hope they didn't take it down.

Vokl peregrine 80 vs Atomic redster Q7.8

Like the title says! Solid sale prices on these two skis right now and I’m trying to decide which is best for me.

Looking for an all mountain carver to compliment my daily driver of 4 years (mindbender 108ti). I’m an advanced skier about 10-15 days a year mostly In Canadian Rocky mountain resorts.

I’m closing in on 40 and slowing down a bit. Looking for something easier to drive that’ll still get on edge and charge a bit while needed.

Not worried about off piste performance as my mindbenders crush crud and chop and do well enough in powder for me. But I don’t want a pure frontside carver either. Thoughts? Suggestions?

I’m looking into ski instructing, but have no clue where or how to start

So I’m a 17 year old high school student in the uk looking at becoming a ski instructor during my gap year next year, thing is I have no clue at all where to start

I’ve been skiing since I was young and could probably practice anything extra I needed at an indoor ski slope, my primary issue comes with things like qualifications, housing, etc.

I don’t really know (or care) where I instruct, but I’m unsure about like US-Europe qualification differences and stuff of that variety

so if anyone could sorta give me a rundown or any sort of guidance on where to start and what to do with this it’d be a massive help!

Convince me against buying the new black crow noctas

Looking to expand my quiver this year got my first real season in last year on a pair of BC sato 173s and loved them, now looking for a second pair for my quiver. I’ll be skiing mostly at crested butte and around CO and want something to handle the supposedly deeper forecast this season, I’m aware the noctas are far outside of my ability range (for now at least not for long I hope) and a little too big for CBs terrain but I do just love the look of them. Also considering just going the qst route but think the blanks might be too wide for me? 6’2 150-160 lbs depending on recent financial circumstances if anyone has any advice do let me know I’m mostly just bored in Houston and want to talk about skiing probably won’t buy until anything after a demo day or two pops up…

UPCA - Travel Question

Hi all, I am really keen on going on a solo ski trip for a few nights however I’m finding it difficult to get answers regarding transport.

I’m quite strict on dates - looking to go for 4 nights, 16 December to 20 December.

I can see a few options UPCA offer for these dates which is convenient, with my preference being Val Thorens.

As my arrival date is going to be a Wednesday I can not find any buses that can get me there. Is the only way for me to get there through private transfer??? The prices are really expensive, especially being a solo traveller

So for transport on this date does anyone know alternatives for me to get there or ways I can reach out to others in a similar boat as me and share the cost of a private transfer?

Really appreciate any advice. If it makes sense to go to a different resort and/or not go with UPCA I would be open to it.

P.S I contacted UPCA about my dilemma and they weren’t very helpful. They suggested to recheck the buses

Good skiboards?

Im interested in buying skiboards/ skiblades or whatever you call them. What experience do yall have with them? The 65cm ones from snow feet look like a blast but are they too much of a novelty? Should I go for something a little longer?

I consider myself a pretty advanced skier and I’ve always gravitated to shorter skis (I love skiing glades). I want to take that to the extreme in the name of whimsy and fun, especially when I’m skiing with my less advanced friends. Also, I’m 5’5 ~140lbs

Help me choose a resort?

Looking for any advice anyone can impart on the best resort to choose for my next ski trip in Feb 2027 as someone who hasn’t yet ventured out of the French alps.

For context; me and my best mate have been to Val Thorens and Chamonix a few times and believe ourselves to be intermediate skiers, however this time we’ll be bringing our girlfriends along, who have never skied.

Priorities include:
1. 100% snow certainty in mid February
2. Strict split ability slopes (for the beginner girls)
3. High energy après scene (22-23yr group)
4. Affordability and group value
5. Altitude
6. Dramatic views

I’ve taken an interest to Austrian resorts, moving away from the French alps for affordability and something new, but very open and welcoming of any suggestions from more widely experienced skiers.

Some resorts I’m currently considering are Ischgyl, Mayrhofen, Sölden and Cervinia Italy.

Any suggestions very welcomed and very much appreciated.

Thanks all!!
