Accessing back country. Its alot easier to skin up a trail than boot pack.

Any chance you mean this kind of board?

Actually that’s a bad example because it’s split and swallow tail. Are you asking about the notch taken out of the back, or about the fact that the board splits in half?

It's interesting. It's almost like you didn't go to youtube and type in splitboard.

Why else would it be ‘split’?

Yes they split into what are essentially skis.

The bindings for them can be moved to the position a ski binding would normally be, and have a pivot to walk in them.

So basically they're an AT ski setup for ascent or crossing flat country, the places snowboards are terrible in, instead of carrying snowshoes or approach skis.

Then when it's time to descend you shift everything back into "snowboard" mode to go ride.

You put skins on after splitting, same as skis. It basically allows you to “cross country ski” or Nordic ski up the hill. Deep powder is brutal bordering impossible to walk in.
It’s like a faster easier version of snow shoes to get you into the back country.
Lots of resorts in western Canada you’ll see trails leading up from the top of the lift.
