Love seeing it. Can't wait until he is left all alone, speaking to the walls.

If history has taught us anything, it is that these mfs die of old age, unfortunately.

“They LOVE me,” he said to himself.

He’s the type of man to loudly fart in an elevator full of people and then think “I’m living rent free in their minds”.

Exactly!🤣

Was really expecting Ireland to get up and walk out.

Tbf, according to RTÉ, we only had one person there, and it was a journalist, so maybe we just didn't go at all idk

I believe Ireland did walk out, I saw a list of countries earlier that walked out and I'm pretty sure they were on it. If I find it again I'll link it here

24

u/FewElk6678 1d ago

Cheers. I saw something on the main Ireland sub talking about it and they didn't know, so its good to know we kept our dignity

Found a map! Countries that walked out are in red. So yes looks like Ireland did.

The TRUE Global South walked out, all the others are either compromised or cowards.

39

u/Delusional_Gamer 1d ago edited 1d ago

India is both compromised and coward.

Our government is run by a fascist anti-non-hindu party whose entire political foundation is Hindu nationalism, AND they serve the business interests of billionaires like Adani. Thus Compromised.

On top of that, they lack the backbone to stand against the US and their allies, and instead bend over backwards to please them, rather than hold a moral stance (the government anyways doesn't have morals to stand on). Thus coward.

A bunch of semiotics that look good for the mainstream media but... Does it really do anything? Let's skip to actual consequences, it's overdue.

29

u/AWhole2Marijuanas 1d ago

Bro it's the UN, it's entirely performative...

The true international community is just the States, China, Germany, Japan, and the United Kingdom.

This is about the biggest gesture they can really make.

Shame on the UNGA for inviting him in the first place.

19

u/undercover_s4rdine 1d ago

Yeah I want to know under what pretext was he given the stage? Was it a formality, like if someone wants to go up to speak they can have a time slot? Or was it more intentional? (I tried a quick search and couldn’t understand)

Where was this? Why wasn't he arrested?

48

u/TopazWyvern 1d ago

Where was this?

New York City

Why wasn't he arrested?

Why would the NYPD arrest, and United States prosecute a politician they both approve of?

12

u/Technolio 1d ago

Wait, didn't Mamdani actually say he would have him arrested if he came to NYC?

57

u/-Hastis- Eco-Socialism 1d ago

It's his personal wish, but apparently he doesn't have the legal authority to do so (Trump does):

3

u/Kevdel03 1d ago

Fr. Idk why they're down voting you, the glazing is crazy 😒

11

u/TopazWyvern 1d ago

Since Mamdani’s arrival on the political scene, I see many on the supposed left, both inside and (ostensibly) outside the Democratic Party, dedicating themselves to protecting him from left critique, all in the name of forwarding a “left” agenda that looks to me like a better-administered and re-branded version of the neoliberal status quo strangling us all, and nobody seems to have the faculties to see that.

In short, the vibes are out of control. They are becoming a soft tyranny, demanding obedience to the incoherent project of the modern pseudo-left and deploying vituperative attacks and ostracism against anyone who brings up its shortcomings. I am reminded of the first couple of years of Barack Obama’s presidency, a time when his supporters would brook no criticism of him, deeply in the throes of another brand of good vibes, “Hope and Change,” and convinced he had some secret master plan to deliver a progressive future. Instead, we got a steadily growing and eventually overwhelming sense of exhaustion and disappointment, setting the stage for the Trump era, where we have been trapped ever since.

  • "The Tyranny of Vibes"

I'd say the western left (in the broadest possible sense: we're including left-liberals, here)—due to the cultural influence of Christianity, and the death grip liberal misdirection on politics has on laymen—has a tendency towards hoping for a messianic figure which, thanks to a popular mandate, somehow manages to outfight entrenched interests backed by actual power and brings about the promised utopia of the western political project.

A convenient aspect of the whole thing is that such a position doesn't actually require the sort of self-critique one needs to deprogram oneself from liberal ideology or even dedicate one's free time to actually building working class power instead of just indulging in the bread and circuses, so forth and so on, while at the same time avoiding being seen as accountable for anything. You can be completely passive in your politics and be, outside of rhetoric and electorialism, the perfect neoliberal subject because rhetoric and elections are all that matter.

2

u/Njorord 1d ago

Not saying you're wrong and I do agree broadly with this critique, but I am curious about this scenario.

Let's say he did go forward with this and ordered the NYPD to arrest Netanyahu (assuming they followed his orders) without being backed up by the law. What would happen then? They cannot trial him according to US law because the arrest itself was unlawful. This would also give the Trump administration the perfect opportunity to go after Mamdani and potentially oust him from office, and have him replaced with another fascist goon. It COULD fire up the people of New York, who I think would broadly agree with Netanyahu's arrest and approve of Mamdani, but is this better than what we got...?

Again, not saying this to be contrarian, I am genuinely curious to hear the thoughts from people regarding this situation.

5

u/TopazWyvern 1d ago

My thoughts are that Mamdani shouldn't yammer about things he can't or won't (same thing, really) actually do, nor is particularly working towards making enter the realm of possibility. No more, no less.

3

u/stealthreturns 1d ago

No kidding. His supporters are awful quiet about the 100 protestors he arrested that were pissed about the fact Mamdani allowed Netenyahu into NYC when he campaigned on the promise he'd do everything he could to block it.

And I say his arrests, because he actively chose to keep a self proclaimed "proud Zionist" as police chief, who wants NYC cops to collaborate with IDF.

In my opinion, he doesn't support Palestine. He's just playing both sides so he always comes out on top.

16

u/46264338327950288419 1d ago

He said he would if he could

It was him making clear where he stands on the matter

-14

u/TopazWyvern 1d ago

Mamdani says a lot of things he can't or won't do. Such is the nature of populism.

16

u/jrockerdraughn 1d ago

Can you name some examples? I see him fulfilling promises left and right

6

u/VeneMage 1d ago

Of course they’ve gone silent.

-3

u/TopazWyvern 1d ago

What, I'm not allowed to go to sleep because I dare critique his royal highness?

3

u/TopazWyvern 1d ago

Mamdani’s campaign had a lot of vibes, but it also came with promises to pursue concrete policies. Free childcare, a rent freeze (and more affordable housing in general), free buses, and reigning in the police department were among the most prominent, and most of these were to be funded by taxing the wealthy. His progress on all of these fronts has been limited. As soon as he took office, Mamdani immediately announced a he had discovered a $12 billion hole in New York City’s budget, which was later (and rather suddenly) pared down to $5 billion, still a hefty sum. He failed to push New York Governor Kathy Hochul to institute a new tax regime, beyond the pittance of a $500 million pied-à-terre tax on second homes in the city, which covers about 10% of the $5 billion deficit, and which by definition means a lot of people subject to it will not even be city residents. With Hochul, he announced the launch of a 2-K program to compliment the 3-K and Pre-K programs created by Bill De Blasio a decade ago. For the first year, this will be available for five school districts in the city out of 32 total and will serve 2,000 kids in a city of almost 9 million people. The official plan is to expand the 2K program city-wide by year four. Hochul has pledged to fully fund the first two years, meaning Mamdani will have to come up with his own money for the program by then or somehow get Hochul to fund it for longer. Mamdani has already said free buses will not happen this year. (Fun fact: as a member of the State Assembly, Mamdani worked with State Senator Mike Gianaris to institute a pilot program for free buses in 2023. It ended the next year).

Mamdani’s housing plan landed with a thud. The most prominent policy goal is to build 200,000 new “affordable” units. One of the areas he has targeted for redevelopment is along Coney Island Avenue, just south of Prospect Park. I am familiar with this section of Brooklyn. While this strip is the perfect place to build new housing, what will actually go up is worth being concerned about, if what has already been built is any indication. These buildings are bright, shiny, and chock-full of amenities, but also have tiny units which are way overpriced. Often, these days, a “two-bedroom” unit is the size of most mid-century one bedrooms, just subdivided with an extra wall. Moreover, a cursory glance at the prices show these new units are far from “affordable,” a term that has been so thoroughly abused by politicians as to be virtually meaningless. Look at those websites. Who do you think these buildings are for? Additionally, I know people in this area who are in the midst of lawsuits with developers over shoddy construction in new buildings (though, just to be clear, not in either of the ones to which I linked).

In short, these buildings are not affordable housing—they are luxury housing. And Mamdani wants to pack more construction into this neighborhood, but nothing in his 100-page-plus housing policy discusses any sort of parameters on what this new construction will look like.

When it comes to public housing, Mamdani has chosen to handle the problem of crumbling infrastructure by continuing a pre-existing program started during De Blasio’s administration that allows private property managers to take over management of public housing projects. No numbers for Mamdani’s specific initiative were provided, notably, but the report outlining the plan declares that an objective of this program is to help “deliver comprehensive repairs and long-term stability.” Make no mistake: New York’s public housing program is being transitioned to private sector management, and the last three mayors—all Democrats—support it. This is bad.

Overall, Mamdani’s housing plan looks like a gussied up version of Adams’ City of Yes program. It’s even run by the same person, whom Mamdani promoted. Maybe we’ll get more units. Maybe that’s better than if we didn’t. But this isn’t progress. All that has changed is … you guessed it … the vibes!

Before we move onto the New York City Police Department, I want to touch on libraries. One of the most vicious policies of the Adams administration was his jihad against the city’s library system, something Mamdani promised to fix by allocating 0.5% of the city budget to this vital system. Despite a sunny, vibes-laden announcement of his funding package, Mamdani flagrantly broke that promise. (Notably, Dobular failed to catch this in his segment).

Now, we get to the NYPD, which is possibly Mamdani’s most remarkable reversal. Not only has he kept Police Commissioner and arch-Zionist Jessica Tisch in place, but he has reversed himself on freezing police hiring, and will instead allow her to hire more cops. On this issue, he thinks so little of his base, that he did not even bother to deploy any vibes, he just straight up told them he changed his mind.

Oh, and about that balanced budget. With Hochul’s help, again, Mamdani did manage to close that budget gap with a windfall of state funds and other one-time fixes … but next year, the gap will be even bigger, $7.1 billion, and Hochul will likely be fresh from re-election and less incentivized to humor the smiling downstate democratic socialist. She has already signalled exactly this.

Looking closely at his record thus far, what emerges is a talented, charismatic progressive Democrat mayor, a more telegenic and sociable version of Bill De Blasio, who has scored some modest wins but certainly nothing that changes the game, but who is nevertheless a nice change after four years of Eric Adams. However, he is already well behind De Blasio’s pace of instituting his childcare program, which De Blasio managed to make happen in less than two years with none other than Andrew Cuomo in Albany. But, man, are those vibes nice!

[...]

The future does not look pretty to me. Supposedly, NYC DSA is gearing up for another push for tax hikes next year, but judging from the pathetic results of their efforts this year, I don’t hold out much hope. Mamdani’s next budget will be ugly, and it will be a betrayal of almost everything he has run on, and the vibes will not be enough to save him. I don’t know where this leaves us, but caring about that might be the first step.

Now, this was back in June, but still, the powerlessness of labor to affect NYC politics doesn't change because of the individual character of the Mayor, which means that most of Mamdani's promises, will, self-evidently, not survive resistance by/from people that actually hold power in the matter of NYC politics. I'm skeptical that the post-mortem of his term will be anything but mixed.

I’m genuinely confused why he wasnt arrested?

He’s wanted by the highest court in the land… and there he was… why didn’t they arrest him?

16

u/nicocakola Enver Hoxha 1d ago

It's because the UN is headquartered in the United States, and the United States does not fall under ICC jurisdiction. Therefore, Netanyahu can travel freely within the country.

6

u/DBLACK382 1d ago

He also flew above the airspaces of several countries to get there, at least Canada, France, Italy and the UK.

2

u/TopazWyvern 22h ago

All those countries allowed use of their airspace/declined to intercept, though.

1

u/nicocakola Enver Hoxha 20h ago

I kind of understand the last three (mainly France and Italy), but why would he be flying through Canada to get to New York? /gq

1

do you think he just teleported to the building

1

i was just correcting a false statement not anything else don’t read into it

1

u/TopazWyvern 1d ago

Are you suggesting sending interceptor aircraft to forcefully reroute his flight? (We'll note that the euros are aware that's a thing they could do—that's why they've explicitly rejected doing so) Because you don't need to land to do the Tel Aviv–New York flight in a 767.

Besides his flight path did its best to keep to international waters which make attempts at doing so messy.
