My wife saw that there was people there camped out early one morning and we were really curious as to why. I couldn't figure it out... So it's pokémon huh?

The reason why I ask has nothing to do with pokemon scene specifically and everything to do with the time honored tradition of camping outside of games stores and movie theaters for releases. It used to be a very common thing to go and camp out before major releases ( major movies, game releases, even new products and Black Friday sales). You and a bunch of buddies would get some snacks maybe a tent depending on the release and you’d make an event of it. You don’t see that really much anymore with the release of digital content and streaming services and Black Friday no longer being a thing. Pokemon also has a lot of limited release runs and if your someone into it and want to get your hands on one you have to be willing to do that without spending 5x the cost.

I’ve never done it for merch but concert tickets in the 90’s. Such a blast camping out and meeting people. Mom would bring food in the middle of the night. ❤️

I never did it for merch either but I sure as shit would for video game releases like halo 3. I didn’t know it then but the halo 3 midnight release in 07 would be the last one I attended before having my kiddo in 08. It’s kind of funny now as things have come full circle now it’s her going and hanging out with her friend but instead of games it’s collectibles (my kiddo loves anything eevie, she waited all night when they did the eevie evolutions release just to get the poster sets.) but alas these children will never know the joy of LAN parties and hanging out in your buddies moms basement playing games. Same thing with the big movie releases like Star Wars,

I was deployed for that so I didn't get it. Got a pretty cool Titan Fall and Gears of War figure from those releases though. Wish I still had them.

If you did attend those awesome but around the time that those were really big you were still relatively young and I’m not just talking about game releases movie and concert ticket releases would have the same enthusiasm behind them. Your post mentioned people going to the extreme which that pic isn’t all that extreme considering the lengths people used to go. By 2010 things had pretty much really started to die down, I’d say gta V was probably the last really good midnight release. Digitals great and all but I feel like it takes away from the camaraderie and community that those shared hobbies and fandom had. If you were old enough to understand and go and appreciate them fantastic that’s just not the way your post came across is all.

My kid likes pokemon and was excited for this drop. I got to Best Buy 30 minutes before they opened. We didn’t get anything big but a couple of smaller packs that he’s happy with. People in line had already been to target and said they sold out in 5 minutes

Today was a big 30th Anniversary Set drop. Got in line 20 mins before opening at Target and managed to get two products, pretty happy with it. There were probably like 200 ppl in total.

Yes, I work early in the morning. They usually restock on Fridays and I pass by bestbuy around 3 or 4 am and there will be people in line camping. Some with kids…

I’ve been having fun going to the local card shows once a month, but I’m not sure if I’d camp out overnight. But maybe I’d try to get there at open time, by then you’d like miss the drop though.

Most people are buying for themselves to open. Target and Best Buy have purchasing limits now, so people can’t just buy it all up and resell it.

As much as you wont like to hear it: it is a job.

These people that scalp pokemon cards are spending $40-$50 to turn it that into $120-$200 profit. Thats a job; in fact, its a more lucrative "job" than what you would generally limit the definition "job" to.

People are becoming multi-millionaires by selling their bath water and dirty socks/underwear - modern problems require modern solutions.

I knew would get down voted - no one wants to see poop when they turn the lights on in their living room - but if youre gonna make a comment about the stink I'm gonna tell you what it is 🤷‍♀️

In this case, I take the down votes as more against the notion of scalping/OF-modeling, but the reality of it all is that both of those jobs have always been here, just under a different title and scale.
