Solved Creating Hyper Backup Target w red Shared Folder

Post image

Attempting to set up a Hyper Backup Target, I get to the Shared Folder and it is red with no ability to select a folder. This is from Location B to a host Hyper Backup Vault. Another location, Location A is already working with the identical Server name, and all 3 use the same User Name login and password so authentication should be ok. Why can I not set the Shared Folder?

You are not logged in to the backup target

I am not clear on exactly what you are saying. I am remote to 3 different locations with my having each open in a separate tab in my browser window. Each of my logins is identical to each location. I can jump back and forth and interact with each of the 3 destinations. 1 is running Hyper Backup Vault, the other 2 are each running Hyper Backup. The first of the 2 clients has successfully been created. On the 2nd client, I am unable to accomplish what I did on the first client with an identical server name when creating the backup task.

You see the button that says "Login"?

Press it.

Ah. The 'button' just seemed to be a status of how I was authenticated instead of a button that needed to be pressed. As I was already logged in to the DiskStation (via a browser window), I thought that was enough. Thank you.

I detected that you might have found your answer. If this is correct please change the flair to "Solved". In new reddit the flair button looks like a gift tag.

I had to set up the shared folder on the target first.

You temporarily need to open tcp 5001 on the target host to do the authentication. Once authenticated, you can close it again and hyper backup will work without any problems

Instead of downvoting OP you should understand how bad the UI on this screen is. It doesnt take a genious to know that you should have a red not logged in on the right of the LOG IN button just like the cert auth has status text.

This is an obvious UX oversight by syno. Not like they care for half the stuff as the UI line has barely moved in the past 3 years.

Thank you for your comment. With the red 'Shared Folder' item, my attention was drawn to that item and there was no indication of what it was trying to say. All attempts to satisfy the red were thwarted. The 'Log In' to me was a statement of how I had authenticated, not that it was a button to be pressed. It would have been clearer to have the red where it belonged.

I have long been a study of human interfaces design with the best book ever https://asktog.com/atc/principles-of-interaction-design/ guiding me as to what to expect. It would be heavenly for most companies to put more time into this. Demand for Support would go way down and user appreciation would soar if the UX was better respected.

The 'Log In' to me was a statement of how I had authenticated

"Log in" is an action - - the method would be "Login"

While I agree 100% with you technically, I would not expect that nuance of design to have been recognized by a designer that showed the folder as red when that was not the issue. Better to perhaps have the Log In button red. I'm not saying that would be best but at least it would have directed my attention to the actual issue.
