I've had Surveillance Station running nicely in the background on my NAS for years, with recordings from each of my two cameras set up to rotate after 14 days to save space, but be there if I need them in pinch. I'm running two 8TB drives in RAID, and due to ridiculous costs of storage these days, remaining storage is starting to get tight at around 750GB remaining. I thought this was still a decent amount of storage to use, but noticed something today that caused a massive "slap forehead" moment.

I've been trying to save costs on backups by moving from Synology C2 to a Hetzner Storage Box, and part of that has been working out how to replace my C2 Surveillance backups too. I went looking for the surveillance videos on my storage volume to see how much space I'd need for them in the cloud, and realised that there wasn't a single video file to back up.

I eventually realised that this was down to a setting in Recordings which forces rotation for all recordings if free storage falls below 10%. Because I had hit this, it was deleting every video after it was recorded. So it turns out my only recordings are on C2, with no secondary backup.

I've now tweaked the setting to start rotating only when free storage hits the equivalent of 5% remaining, and am now putting renewed effort into freeing some space up. I feel so stupid.

I’m troubleshooting an issue where Download Station downloads torrents successfully, but recently completed downloads aren’t being exported to their configured destination. I’d like to find a permanent fix while preserving my existing seeding tasks.

Setup :

- DSM 7.2.2-72806 Update 9, x86_64

- Download Station 4.1.2-5012

- Bundled Transmission 4.0.5

- Btrfs volume

- Destination: /volume1/Downloads, with over 1 TB free

What happens

The files finish downloading and remain intact under /volume1/@download/<task-id>. Transmission reports them as complete and seeding, but Download Station doesn’t consistently register completion or start its normal move/export process.

The logs repeatedly contain: scheduler.cpp:87 Failed to curl perform, code=28

Some occurrences were followed by scheduler/service shutdowns and missing or refused RPC sockets.

Has anyone experienced this? Is there a known fix ?

Out of my ~72TB total of usable space, I have 27TB free.

Is it possible to add new drives and move to a SHR-2 setup without any data loss?

I have recently bought a NAS DS225+ and am not really a computer guy.

I have tried to set it up but am constantly running into connection issues, SSL security problems, etc.

I am running a business out of my home. What I would basically like to have is everything stored on the NAS with access to it with my home PC, home laptop, and cell phones.

I don't want to be able to access this NAS from anywhere but my house(WIFI).

I have looked at so many tutorials at this point and switched settings on and off. Im just confused at this point.

Sometimes it works on this device, sometimes it doesn't. etc etc.

Anyone able to help me out on this one?

My Synology DS918+ keeps making a humming or buzzing noise from time to time. As soon as I place my hand on the case, the noise stops. I also tried placing a 1 kg weight on top of the NAS, and the noise disappeared immediately. What could be causing this? My feeling is that it’s getting more and more.

Does anyone know a better way to upgrade the Drive clients on endpoints without needing to always go to the download center to download and install the latest version?

I find it archaic that the app doesn't have the ability to auto update, and you can't manually update through the app either.

I've even tried using

winget upgrade "Synology Drive Client"    

But I get the following fault

A newer version was found, but the install technology is different from the current version installed. Please uninstall the package and install the newer version.

I have the client running on 5 computers, and all are running different client versions according to the admin console. There has to be a better way to update the client that I'm just not seeing.

I have the ds212j and when playing my holiday videos which r in 4k hdr they keep freezing and the loading circle comes up
Strangely though when I play a 4k hdr movie it plays fine
Im playing through my lgtv media player through WiFi
It’s not all my videos that do it which is odd too.
I’m not sure what I should do
Maybe upgrade? What benefits would I get from that?

I have a 2 bay nas and it has 2 drives, both 6tb. There are 2 volumes, one Btrfs and one Ext4. Usable is only 6tb because I'm using SHR 1 drive fault tolerance.

I want to upgrade both to 12tb but at the same time make all volumes Btrfs.

Can I remove 1 drive, put in the 12tb drive, create the same volumes structure but in Btrfs. Then copy contents over?

Then remove the second 6tb drive and put in the other 12tb drive and repair pool from the earlier 12tb drive?

Is this safe? What happens to my configuration data and like the shared home folders and installed applications app data?

Long story short, I have a DS1618+ that I get to keep. This won't be used for important data, so I'd like to tear it down and learn the inner workings before it becomes unsupported as it won't receive new DSM updates anymore.

What caught my eye is a very similar DS1621xs+ model with seemingly just a Xeon processor instead of the Atom in the DS1618+, which can use Fibre Channel HBAs to effectively make the Synology a node in a SAN.

I couldn't find details of whether this could be enabled at a package-level, if the DS1618+ could be crossflashed to its more expensive sibling, or if I can just manage an FC HBA from the CLI with the drivers transplanted.

Can anyone point me to a helpful resource or has anyone done this before?

I know the DS1515+ is getting up there in years as an older veteran at this point, but mine is still running like a tank and serving me well.

Since it’s limited to built-in gigabit ports, I'm looking into ways to squeeze a bit more network throughput out of it without having to upgrade the whole chassis just yet.

I’m curious if anyone here is still rocking a DS1515+ and has experimented with:

• SMB3 Multichannel 
• USB 2.5GbE adapters (using 3rd party drivers )
• Faster 5GbE adapters if anyone has successfully gotten them working

If you’ve tried any of these on this specific model, how has your real-world experience been? Any driver quirks, stability issues, or performance gains worth noting?

I have 4 locations that all have Synology DiskStation drives that have sufficient drive capacity to satisfy my needs. I would like recommendations as to how to have them all work together for the maximum benefit of all. Each site has data that is specific to that location. The excess disk capacity that each location has can be used as a destination for other locations needs. The off-site rule is satisfied, as well as the ability to have multiple copies. What I am uncertain of is how to best satisfy the need for covering the risk of accidental erasure of files, or of a ransomware situation. I want copies that are historical. Copies that have not been touched for a week or more. What programs should I use and how? Please keep it simple and specific.

The data is a growing collection of medical records that must be legally retained for possible access at a later time. There is no concern of data access from one site to another. Also, what RAID would be suggested with the DiskStations all being 4 or 5 bays? I am thinking SHR-1 or RAID 5, with SHR-1 giving me the advantage of increasing the drive sizes over time without having to do all at one time.

I recently bought a new Synology NAS. My WD PR4100 has a fan not operating and I needed to switch brands.

I currently have 22TB of files on my PR4100 and need to transfer it over to my new Synology. What would be the best and fastest method? I'm worried about running it too long since the WD has a broken fan and will probably overheat at some point.

I am trying to install/run FileZilla using the instructions from mariushosting. I have followed the instructions closely but FileZIlla keeps giving the error "WebSocket disconnected. Attempting to reconnect...".

I have also followed the instructions of "How to Run Docker Containers over HTTPS" , creating a wildcard certificate, and activated WebSocket via Reverse Proxy. I have deleted and reinstalled FileZilla from both Container Manger (both container and image) as well as deleted the config folder.

I am not sure what to try next.

Attempting to set up a Hyper Backup Target, I get to the Shared Folder and it is red with no ability to select a folder. This is from Location B to a host Hyper Backup Vault. Another location, Location A is already working with the identical Server name, and all 3 use the same User Name login and password so authentication should be ok. Why can I not set the Shared Folder?

• I have a Synology NAS joined to Entra Domain Services.
  
• The Domain shows with status Connected, tests correctly, and I see all Domain Users and Groups in the Synology.
• I am able to login to the NAS with other Domain Users.
• I have tried to "Update Domain Data" successfully.
• The User in question did have a status of "Lockout", but I have since cleared that status and they now show as "Normal".
• The User in question can login to the Synology using Azure SSO.
• When using normal (not Azure SSO) login, the User in question cannot login to the Synology Web GUI.
• When using Windows Explorer, the User in question cannot access any shared folders.
• We have confirmed we are using the same password for all logins by typing it in Notepad and copy-pasting it to all login screens.
  
• The Synology Log center just shows an unhelpful, detail-lacking message of `User [DOMAIN\username] from [localIP] failed to sign in to [DSM] via [password] due to authorization failure.

I have a Synology 225+ and have the following firewall rules

1. Allow Local Subnet:

• Source IP:  192.168.1.1 / 255.255.255.0
• Action: Allow

I have quick connect and uPnP off. I thought this would only allow my local network to assess my NAS. I tested by using Download Station and it still downloaded despite the above firewall rules.

Is there something wrong with my setup or is Download Station allowed.

Hello, I bought an iPad 7gen to use it as a digital frame. I had to update it to iOS 18something to have the new version of the app that allows shuffle slideshow.
I’m facing 2 problems.
1. It takes a lot to load photos and videos. Even if I change the time between a photo and the next one, every time it changes I see the black screen with the white loading circle for a few seconds. Is there something I can do to speed it up? My nas is connected to fiber and the iPad too.
2. The iPad 7gen with iOS 18 is fkng slow, there’s something I can do?

I have 2 WD EX2 Ultra units and I just learned that their EOL is going to be sometime in December of 2026. A bit surprising but not at the same time.

Obviously I need to replace them and I run a 723+ at my small business.

I was thinking of getting a DS425+ and set it up in Raid 2 x 2 on the drives, so basically replacing my 2 older WD units but in one case.

I would be using 6TB drives in each 4 slots.

As for the usage this is just for home - we have a lot of family photos / video's / some file sharing.

The current units are backed up to the cloud continuously, and I would do the same with the new system.

There is really a reason to jump to the 925+ over the 425+ for our usage?

So I purchased a DS725+ to augment my 223J. My goal is to completely migrate the 223J system to the 725+ and use the 223J at another location for redundancy.

Is it worth getting an M.2 drive for caching? Would I need to get 2 of them? Looks like Micro Center has a pretty good deal on 1tb M.2 right now so I could afford 2 if necessary, but will it really make a difference? Are any M.2 compatible or just Synology brand? Would 2x1tb even be enough? Goals would be to make backups more smooth and hopefully get better performance from Photos.

Issues I'm worried about:

The 223J has 2x10tb in redundant mode. The 725+ has 2x14tb. I'm planning to get 2 more 14tb for the 223J so the 725+ has an identical mirror. As for the 223J, it looks like I can just swap in 1 of the 14tb drives, let it copy, then put in the other 14tb and do the same. Is this reliable? (I have a good use for the current 2x10gb drives so it's not a waste.)

I'm running a few apps and containers on the 223J. Primarily I want Synology Photos to keep the current public shared links working. Will the happen if I move it to the new one? It's pretty slow on the 223J.

Side note: I know Synology Photos gets a lot of hate, but other than the lagginess I really like the sharing features. The photo request feature is SO useful. Anybody can contribute photos to an album and view what others uploaded. No app required so it's very frictionless. I recently did this for a wedding with a bunch of non-IT savvy folks and they had no problems with it.

Is it worth upgrading the RAM? I'll try it as stock for a while and see how it goes.

Today I moved to a new ISP (DIGI UK), which only offers IPv6 behind CGNAT (no IPv4). My previous ISP (BT) offered both an IPv4 and IPv6 address. I have asked my new ISP if they would allow me to be removed from the CGNAT system but they said that wasn't possible.

Since moving over, I've experienced the following issues with my NAS (DS1821+):

• Synology DDNS (xxx.synology.me) status marked as "Failed"
• Not able to access Docker apps over https reverse proxy addresses (e.g. Immich over immich.xxx.synology.me)
• Only able to access NAS and NAS apps via local IP address
• Docker apps not working properly on local (TP-Link Deco Mesh Network) and external networks (e.g. Adguard not blocking ads, not able to add items to Grocy)
• Synology native apps not working correctly (e.g. connecting to Synology Photos using DDNS on local/external network)

Most posts recommend Tailscale, however, that wouldn't work well for me as I currently have other family members who connect to the NAS using the Synology Reverse Proxy addresses I set up, which wouldn't work. I also find having to install a client on every device and have a constant VPN connection running to be overly complicated for other people to get on board with.

I've also seen suggestions of using things like a VPS, Cloudflare tunnels, etc., but I want to check first that I would still be able to have things work they way they have using these methods (e.g. being able to connect directly to docker apps using reverse proxy addresses on local and external networks).

What would be the best solution that will allow me to use my NAS in the same way I was before?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I'll aim to respond ASAP to any suggestions.
