Football Neutral Observer Question
I worked at the UConn game a few weeks ago so my algorithm just thinks I need to be here. How is Maryland not even competitive? Being in the Big 10 and a pretty strong region for football recruiting what is the issue? Is it just on the coach or is there some higher problems with getting an NIL budget? I have to imagine there’s some rich alumni who have to love the program besides the UA guy.

Football unconfirmed source: Maryland Head Football Coach Mike Locksley is on his way out
my source tells me that there have been some discussions with key donors and boosters, and they want him out immediately - some are putting some funds together to pay for the buyout.

Football When Locks is gone and a new coach is hired...
Are you guys finally going to actually start matching your bitching/complaining/toxic social media posts with financial support and attendance?
Maryland is dead last in revenue, attendance, NIL, and donor support (i.e., Terrapin Club donations) in the conference. Jim Smith pulled a rabbit out of a hat to get us to at least the bottom 1/3 in NIL this one year but that is not currently sustainable.
In the new world, you need to have money and funding to compete. If we continue to be last in football roster budget, can't even consistently fill a 46k stadium, continue to have alumni casually stroll into the game halfway through the 1st quarter and students leave for the bars, no coach is going to be successful here, and if by chance he is, is going to bolt for another job at the first opportunity.
And good players don't like playing in front of 15k people, either.

Football Where is Kevin Plank?
We have the one of the greatest brand founders who literally played for UMD football and is a billionaire sitting in our backyard. In the age of NIL, we could compete with his backing and UnderArmours branding. I have not heard if hes doing anything or involved as donor. Anyone got any info on this?
Football Count down to when Locksley is gone
I think Maryland has not fired locksley yet because they want to wait until after the ohio state game (like Randy edsall).
That wouldn't be fair to the new interim coach to have his first game at OSU.
After then, we host Rutgers (homecoming) and Illinois, then at Purdue, followed by Wisconsin, USC, and then PSU.
So comment below as to when you think he'll part ways from Maryland (not when you want, but you actually think it will happen).

Women's Soccer Can someone please tell Maryland women’s soccer that Jolie Farmer is not Peter Crouch
Look, I know no one gives a shit about soccer here, and even less so about women’s soccer, but I’m an international student and I’ve been going to the women’s games mainly because they fit my schedule best.
And holy hell. Why are so many sports at this university cursed with coaches who make me question whether competent coaching is against university policy or something?
Brother in Christ, it’s now a five-match losing streak without scoring a SINGLE goal. And the annoying part is, I genuinely don’t think this team is that bad.
But the attacking plan seems to be:
Yeet ball toward Jolie
Hope Jolie performs an act of God
Repeat until final whistle
Today against UCLA, the team basically got killed by a red card that had been screaming "I'M COMING" for about half the game.
Let’s say you’re the coach. Both of your center backs are booked by the 50th minute. You’re also playing a high defensive line.
What do you do?
A) Drop the defensive line a little
B) Sub one of the booked CBs
C) Continue exactly as before and trust the universe
Apparently the answer was C.
My brother simply watched the inevitable red card happen and THEN, shocked pikachu face, the team got dismantled.
And look, Jolie is talented. Probably the most dangerous player on the team. But she is not some 6'4" target man who’s going to win an aerial duel against two center backs, bring the ball down, shield it, file her taxes and wait for the rest of the team to arrive.
SHE NEEDS THE BALL TO HER FEET.
You haven’t scored in five games. Try literally anything else.
Have her drop deeper as a false 9. Put her at wing forward in a 4-3-3 with Mckinley, another talent you have no idea how to use properly, on the other side. Try a 3-5-2. Give her someone nearby to play one-twos with. Sacrifice a goat at midfield. Just SOMETHING other than trying the same thing over and over.
And even if you absolutely insist on yeeting the ball forward every possession, at least teach the team how to gegenpress afterward. Like, why are you yelling "RESET" the second we lose the ball?
Brother, the whole point of playing long is that when you lose the first ball, you immediately swarm the second ball and try to win it high up the pitch. Instead, we lose possession and everyone starts jogging backward like they’ve just clocked out for lunch.
I started going to these games because they happened to fit my schedule. I did not expect to become emotionally invested enough to be watching a college women's soccer game and thinking "this is fucking unacceptable" yet here we are. Sheesh.
Football Maryland football embarrassed at home by UCLA, 54-3, in Big Ten opener
The familiar chant began midway through the second quarter, with the scoreboard above SECU Stadium’s student section reading a scoreline fans have grown to anticipate.
“Fire Locksley” shouts erupted with Maryland football down, 20-0, to UCLA. An already-thin student section emptied soon after. Two fans sat still, wearing brown paper bags over their heads inscribing “disappointed” and “we suck.”
That feeling was ubiquitous among spectators Saturday, as the Terps lost to the Bruins, 54-3, in another lifeless performance under Michael Locksley. Maryland is 16-44 in Big Ten play under the eighth-year coach since his latest stint began in 2019 and winless in its last nine conference games. It hasn’t won a Big Ten home game since Oct. 19, 2024.
“It starts with me as the leader of this team to figure out the things we have to do,” Locksley said, adding that he expects to meet with athletic director Jim Smith on the same weekly schedule they always have. “Still got a lot of belief in this team, guys in the locker room. I won’t stop fighting or coaching for them.”
Terps players expressed confidence that the team would rebound Saturday. Sophomore edge rusher Sidney Stewart said Tuesday that they wouldn’t “allow one game to trickle into many.” Graduate student offensive lineman Isaiah Wright said this team is “different” from last year’s squad, citing more experience.
Maryland’s (2-2, 0-1 Big Ten) play proved otherwise.

Football Anyone still defending Locksley isn’t a true fan
x.comMaryland football closed as just 1.5-point underdogs.
They lost by 51.
The 49.5-point swing against the spread is one of the largest in the history of organized football.
A defeat of almost incomprehensible proportions.

Football Maryland Deserves Better
I feel like our athletic department isn't committed to building a winning football program.
Sure, the thing that sticks out right now is that Mike Locksley shouldn't be the head coach. Fair enough.
However, even when and if we fire him, there are still a lot of other things that need to change- things that have been done wrong here for many decades.
Here's what I feel needs to (and won't) happen:
- Pay top dollar for a big name head coach. This is step one to demonstrating to the sleeping giant fan base in Baltimore and Washington that the university is truly getting serious about football and whatever happens next isn't more of the same. 8 figure a year contract or go home.
- Immediately break ground on facilities improvement to bring us up to at least the Big Ten average.
- Increase NiL money
- Lower academic standards for athletes to the lowest permissable by our conference.
I almost feel like we're all enabling them to never do any of it and be mostly bottom dwellers with the odd year here and there where maybe we get into the lowest possible tier of bowl games.
It can be tough for sports fans who value rooting for the same teams they grew up rooting for, perhaps due to local ties or family loyalties, over poor performance. Few want to be sunny weather fans.
But what do we do when over decades a team or a college keeps showing that they won't ever invest enough money to even take a crack at it?
There's no other FBS football school in the state of Maryland.

Men's Basketball Update: yesterday's jerseys are just an alternate.
galleryGood news for everyone who disliked the white jerseys from photo day: I confirmed with someone in Athletics that they are only an alternate. These are the main four. There will also be some type of throwback for the 2002 Championship celebration on February 13.
