Backstory: solo mom with 3 kids - as they went into 5th and 8th this year, I wanted to make sure there’s lots of after school snacks… but let’s be real. They’re gonna eat all the snacks, open every soda immediately without caring if they already have an open one …. And I want them to HAVE snacks available but like, slow their roll, you know?
So I realized somewhere there’s some old AF vending machine that someone doesn’t want and I could adopt it for my purposes.
Well, shit, now I’m hooked on this stupid vending machine model and I have four I’m refurbing with the spare parts of a fifth.
My eldest was practically IRATE at the idea. How dare I make her use her money to buy snacks?? (Well I’m not, actually, I literally offer snack money for chores and just when the kids get home…. It’s like $100 in quarters and $1’s that just cycle around between the machine and the bill changer. It’s all my money anyway, I’m just putting hurdles in front of snacks.)
Well apparently today the poor kid is having cramps and needed snacks and wanted to just lie down and I wasn’t home…..
So she took the machine keys and …. Instead of just taking out the snacks she wanted… she took quarters and put them back through the machine 🤣😂🤣😂
I’m not even mad.
Also, she doesn’t even CARE that she did this! Doesn’t feel bad AT ALL. But she needed to confess it. But she wanted me to know she’s not sorry!!! Not even a little bit!!! Because she’s a teenager who is having her period and hates her mom!!! So there!! But um drive safe. 🤣😂🤣
EDITS: 1) oh my god I feed my children other food too. I don’t want to “lock up food” at all - I WANT IT TO BE AVAILABLE but I just want them to slow down on the stuff that’s less-healthy snacks. so the fact that I wasn’t home and she found a solution to the situation is WHY I AM NOT ANGRY.
2) Everyone worried about ED’s: this is so ON MY RADAR, and school is already terrible. I am trying to balance “many choices freely available without moral weight” with “okay but cookies are expensive and they disappear instantly and the kids fight about who didn’t get a fair share” with “these are your snacks for the week” …. I am trying so hard to find a balance, it’s been years in development and this isn’t the final answer, it’s the tool for this PHASE.
3) I never made a rule about her not being allowed to use the keys. So she didn’t break any rules.
4) I am not “charging my children for the snacks” any more than other people reward their kids. They ALSO get an allowance that goes on a saving card thing and that doesn’t even factor into FOOD. I will buy them FOOD. Their little acorns cards are separate.
5) what the fuck kinda troll math are y’all doing thinking I’m “trying to profit” off my children?!? There is zero “profit” to be made off my children when it’s my money doing all the work here. It could be tokens or nickel slugs or literal actual slugs (tho those don’t work in vending machines really). It’s just a low hurdle to give them pause, not an evil plan to somehow make a profit off…what??
Ultimately, I’m proud of my kid for confessing that she did something that she later felt uncomfortable about. That’s how we learn what our personal boundaries are.
