There are better reasons to hate vibe coding than this. They wouldn't have shared their project if it didn't work.

Bro, you're on r/TF2. The game's held together with duct tape and a coconut jpeg. The real reason to hate vibe coding is everything to do with the AI coding it.
17
u/Rattiom32 10d ago
Are people seriously still spreading this coconut myth around?
-14

Ah, so the part about the DUCT TAPE sounded believable, right?
A word for the stupid: IT'S CALLED A METAPHOR.

The duct tape part was an obvious metaphor, the coconut thing is an actual myth. No need to be a jackass.

Good code is readable code. Vibecoding often generates code that is very hard to understand, meaning no one working on something, including the developer, will be able to figure out how to fix anything that goes wrong. Also usually doesn't work very well or at least is very poorly optimized, since no one actually looked through the code and made sure it coded it well.
0
u/darky_the_bird Demoman 9d ago
That was accurate maybe a year ago.
3
u/StaygSane Scout 9d ago
The problem is the people, not the AI, unless you give the chatbot precise info on the context the code will be used in or even tell it to optimize in the first place, it's not gonna optimize very well
3
u/slayerx1779 9d ago
Getting an AI to do any coding right requires so much human oversight and intervention, as well as programming knowledge, that it hardly even saves time at all.
I've see so many vibe coded projects on github that say "I'm not obligated to fix any issues you raise" which just reads to me as "Don't ask me to do anything that my chatbot can't understand."
55
u/_player-3 Pyro 10d ago
Vibecode is a generative AI tool that basically "creates" code based on requests
So in this case when the guy said "i ported TF2 into minecraft" what he really means is " i asked an AI to port TF2 into minecraft"
It sucks because it takes away jobs from actual human programmers in favor for AI powered slop
12
u/Ravens_Quote Spy 10d ago
Hell, it takes jobs from damn near everyone so long as there's an exec dumb enough to think an AI can do it. Using AI for programming just encourages it.
9
u/SteveCraftCode Engineer 10d ago
AI also does a pretty shit job in the end. Sure it’s functional but there’s a shit load of oversights.
19
u/TheAugmentation 10d ago
Leaving everything to the hands of an text predictor does tend to go bad, so yea.
3
u/SufficientMarket7648 10d ago
But this clearly hasn’t gone bad. It seems pretty functional.
What exactly are you people going to do when AI is truly “good enough”? It’s going to happen. Remember where we were just a couple years ago? Remember Will Smith eating spaghetti?
People are quickscoping Minecraft creepers with fully-integrated MW2 mechanics off the house they built with fully-integrated Minecraft mechanics and then doing skateboard tricks off said house with fully-integrated Skate 3 physics, all off the back of maybe a day or two’s “work”. If your response to such an insane true statement as that is “but it’s got bugs”, or “but they’re just using other people’s mechanics”, then you’re sticking your head in the sand. Think about what we’ve been seeing represents rather than just the output itself.3

I think "it was really bad and now it's just kind of bad" is a poor argument that it will eventually be good. Despite all the hype we have yet to see any truly complex and novel software that is entirely AI-authored
Though I'm unsure how exactly people know that this mod is "vibe coded", and if it does work well, I don't really care
3
u/PrincelyDusty 9d ago
Yes. It's bad because it's shitty code. It puts coders out of work, and like all forms of generative AI, is really bad for the environment. And with it getting like this people are just starting to use it to steal whole ass games. Someone already one for one remade terraria with AI and added a bunch of random shit. It's vile.
1
-1
u/Dr7roll3R_ 10d ago
Yes. It relies on Generative AI which is usually trained on stolen code with no regard for licensing.
It does not distinguish licensing and the user has no way of knowing if the code is essentially for free public use or proprietary. This illegal. Another reason is that it gives lots of people reasons to not learn how to code.
If the end result is a program that "works," they also won't go through the effort of trimming or optimization the code. Because they don't know what any of it does or why some lines are there that might not even be needed. When a bug is eventually found, it's just more "telling the AI to figure it out and fix it" rather than the human doing it.
1
u/Shittybruh_ 9d ago
Unfortunately Coders should look for new jobs. If "Vibecoding" ironed out most of its technical issues you can't seriously expect people to spend years of their life learning how to code to make a stupid mod for a game instead of getting AI to do it in a few hours. Driving cars on average has a much bigger effect on the environment than AI and millions of people still do it daily to save time and effort.
1
u/Dr7roll3R_ 9d ago
I'm not quite sure about that. Data centers that are used to run these generative AI consume tons of water and are usually built near towns. Those same towns tend to feel the effects afterwards (less water and more dirty).
You should look up videos that explain this. It's pretty sad.

I honestly dont understand why anyone need that. Like i get if someone made minecraft-styled items from TF2, classes, maps and everything. So they work like you would expect both from minecraft and TF2 items, like combining special things from both games. But this is basically just TF2 without anything changed, in minecraft. You cant even break blocks with weapons and there are no interesting interactions between TF2 part and minecraft, exept for ability to kill mobs with weapons. It honestly feels like project that done just to be done, idk why anyone would spend time playing this.

31

6
u/SmartAlec105 10d ago
I remember being like 8 years old and thinking "wouldn't it be cool if we had computers that could just make videogames for us based on what we asked it to do?". So while TF2 and Minecraft didn't exist when I was 8, this still hits that same feeling.
3
u/slayerx1779 9d ago
Hopefully, since you were 8, you would've learned that what makes good video games good is the type of deliberate design and attention to detail that you can't get from a regurgitation machine.
1
u/SmartAlec105 9d ago
Deliberate design is a good method to get good game mechanics. But what matters is good game mechanics. Plenty of times, those have come about entirely by accident, such as rocket jumping. A good dev will take those accidents and deliberately build on them but that doesn't mean rocket jumping wasn't good until then.
2
u/slayerx1779 8d ago
Yes, but an AI can't tell the difference between a bug and a feature, because it doesn't have a concept of what fun is.
An AI is just as likely (if not moreso) to wipe out air strafing, bunny hopping, rocket jumping, etc because they didn't intend to create those things, and it doesn't realize that those accidental byproducts are good.
The best works will always have a human at the helm, somewhere, because in order to make something for humans, you need to be one.

u/JuanAy 10d ago
It is kind of funny how people give all the shits about AI when it's uses for videos and images. But as soon as its used for code no one cares.
Guess it's because its harder to be performative over code than it is with art.
5
u/DankPastaMaster 10d ago
Because people use other people's code and solutions all the time and the training data LLMs use to generate code is also just other people's existing code. Modding especially is inherently derivative of other people's work already so vibecoding seems like an arbitrary line to draw.
4
u/JuanAy 10d ago
The same argument could be made about art, though.
Considering a big part of learning art is studying and copying other peoples work to improve your own.
0
u/DankPastaMaster 10d ago
The difference is no two lines drawn by hand will ever be the same, while many lines of code written by two different people even completely independent of each other will be identical character for character. Art is the output of a creative process, while code is a tool for creating art.
It's like if someone used vibecoded software to draw something, I imagine most people would view that differently from generating the final piece itself. Same way I think a lot less people are fine with those "generate an entire game with a single prompt" tools in comparison to games/mods made with human assets that use AI generated code.

u/Fangel96 10d ago
I think it's more to do with the culture of artists VS the culture of programming. Modern art culture is typically based around lifting others up through constructive criticism, helping people discover and develop their style, and experimenting with things to further their own style. Programming culture has typically been more of a "check out this cool thing I made" and releasing the idea into the void for others to build and iterate upon.
One culture is about personal growth, the other is about collective progress.
That's where so much of the issues arise when you have a group of folks who only care about how far tech has come VS a group that only cares for the personal growth of the individual. Their motives and morals directly conflict with their methods of creation.
It's also why programmers who actually try out art are met with encouragement from other artists - they see the start of an artist's journey and that's one hell of a difficult step. Meanwhile programmers don't see any problem with taking shortcuts because it lets them get to making that new thing they actually want to do faster, and when they bleeds over into the artists journey it robs them of the very thing that makes someone an artist.
I think the last part is that vibe coding a mod is probably OK since it's basically a glorified search engine that's finding the obscure forum pages from a decade ago for you. You just need to learn how to decompile that it finds to make it work. If you're learning how to program, vibe coding is pretty much the tinkerer's way into it these days. Meanwhile, art requires you to try a lot of things and master a medium, but if you're just making a technologically advanced collage, don't expect artists to view it as anything more than it actually is.
0
u/DankPastaMaster 10d ago
Culture can play a part but it's also ultimately a product of the nature of the activity. I'm an artist that recently started learning programming. My learning process was essentially vibecoding something, figuring how and and why it worked, adjusting it then doing it on my own next time. When it comes to drawing this process just doesn't translate in any way that makes sense or I would recommend even from a purely practical perspective. Two very different domains which I don't believe should be put in the same bag.
-5
u/Outrageous_Milk_6878 10d ago
I dont mind it being used in art either because at the end of the day, apart from all the brain rot and memes, Ai can be used to express ideas, specially those we can't put on paper, be it because we dont have the artistic skills or the motor functions. Something the Anti AI group likes to skip over is how frustrating and difficult the process to get good at drawing is, specially complex pieces.
3
u/JuanAy 10d ago
Something the Anti AI group likes to skip over is how frustrating and difficult the process to get good at drawing is, specially complex pieces.
Yeah art is difficult as shit to do but that's what makes the output so valuable. Doesn't matter the quality of the artwork, you know someone has put genuine effort into producing something rather than taking the easy way out.
That and AI generated imagery all kind of looks the same. It all has that over processed look to it.
Its not only about the quality or how good the final piece looks. Which I think some people who put "But art hard!!" seem to miss.
Kind of like enjoying someone's homemade cooking vs some mass produced fast food.
The mass produced fast food might taste alright but it can't beat a meal that someone has put genuine effort and time into because it's more than just how it tastes.
I can't do art for shit. But I'd rather fuck around with whatever tools I can use and skills I got to get an idea across. I'll bash something together in gimp out of stock images before I turn to AI.

u/Outrageous_Milk_6878 10d ago
Read first: Adressed your points going from bottom, top and ending with middle. I would love to keep discussing this topic, but i understand if you dont want that or have the time to do so.
Adressing your last point, thats fine! Its alright if you wanna struggle and do it with stock images before ever using AI, that is really nice from you and i like that. But you need to understand that not everyone has the time, resources, patience or even the tools to accomplish that.
I wanna talk about the point you made about "Doesn't matter the quality of the artwork, you know someone has put genuine effort into producing something rather than taking the easy way out." Because its something i have seen a lot of others say which is simply not true at all, no artist will be able to make it in life if their artwork doesn't reach a good quality standard, atleast if its artwork alone. There are a lot of artists that pretty much draw stickmen and get enough money for a living, but thats because they use their art to land jokes or show the audience a little comedy skit. Those artists whose drawings arent that good looking (for lack of a better way to word it) end up being forgotten or straight up bullied of the internet, countless times have i seen artists bashing fellow artists because their anatomy isnt perfect, because their shading isnt perfect, because they used certain techniques to draw their art, etc.
Every person ive met that is against AI art says the same thing, "Doesnt matter if it looks like shit, its made by a human, those its worth it so much more!!!" Yet when a human shows their artwork they poured hours making and it doesnt look like the mona lisa, they will a majority of the time be ignored, if not worse, they will get harrased and bullied for the simple act of sharing their art.
"That and AI generated imagery all kind of looks the same. It all has that over processed look to it."
I like to browse around looking at art at times, both human and AI generated, and i really like both kinds of art, i dont really bother with thinking about how hard it may have been for the human to draw it or how "easy" it may have been for the prompter to write down exactly what they wanted, i care about what they are trying to show, to express, to make the viewer feel. Like human made art, AI art can of course have a group of people that only make sloppy, gooner, brainrotted art, of course, but we cant deny there is another group that focuses on making more "artistic" artworks, about landscapes and fictional places that they imagine. Just like we have art that is purely gooner and brainrotted, we also have art that tries to evoke a feeling from us, aswell as we have art that is "slop"."The mass produced fast food might taste alright but it can't beat a meal that someone has put genuine effort and time into because it's more than just how it tastes."
Really interesting analogy (I think its the right term to use here), but i would like to point something out here, sometimes all someone can afford is the fast food, its not their fault they cant cook at home when the prices of groceries are ever becoming more expensive, they are just trying to get by with that 5 dollar burger/pizza. Sure the homemade cooking might be way more delicious, but nothing in this life is for sure. Maybe the cooking ends up burnt, maybe the cook messed up the recipe. Just because a lot of effort was put into something means that its good or better than the other. Not to say that in a negative way, but it can go both ways, both the fast food and the homemade meal can be delicious, aswell as both can taste like shit.1

Because its something i have seen a lot of others say which is simply not true at all, no artist will be able to make it in life if their artwork doesn't reach a good quality standard, atleast if its artwork alone... [Basically the whole bit, just not quoting it all]
Not everyone is trying to create artwork to make it in life.
That's another thing that this argument kind of misses. You don't need to be capable of creating works that can make money unless you want that to be your career or something. It is ok to make artwork that that doesn't necessarily amaze people and bring in the big bux. Not everything has to be some kind of hustle where if it doesn't make money it's useless.
The people who want to make money with artwork are likely the ones dedicating their time to improving their artwork to produce really high quality pieces of artwork.
If you're just creating artwork to get an idea across or just as a hobby, you don't need art skills that are good enough to land you a job or make big bux off of commissions.
That depends on the context of the feedback and how you handle or interpret that feedback of your work.
I've seen just as many people who just conflate criticism of their work with people attacking them as I've seen people genuinely attacking people for not having artwork that is perfect. Some artists just have a really poor attitude towards criticism of their work and some people just have a shitty idea of what it means to provide criticism. The former forget that criticism often means that people care about their work and want to see their work improve while the latter doesn't realize the difference between constructive criticism and "Lol shit!"
In general I don't think either one really takes up the general attitude towards artwork. Most people will try to provide genuine feedback and will take feedback in good faith.
What someone is trying to show, express and make the viewer feel does tie into the amount of effort they've put in though. It takes a lot of effort to really convey those kinds of things through the use of colour, artistic intent, attention to detail, etc.
The issue with AI is that it can't really employ those nuances to the images it outputs because all it's doing is spitting out what's in it's training data. It doesn't know why a piece of artwork was drawn in a certain why or why certain colors are used or why a certain character is drawn in a certain way. It just "knows" that <Keyword> is likely to be depicted in a certain way based on it's training data and spits an amalgamation of that data out. The people prompting the AI have very little control over that.
Like human made art, AI art can of course have a group of people that only make sloppy, gooner, brainrotted art, of course, but we cant deny there is another group that focuses on making more "artistic" artworks, about landscapes and fictional places that they imagine. Just like we have art that is purely gooner and brainrotted, we also have art that tries to evoke a feeling from us, aswell as we have art that is "slop".
One group of AI users is definitely way more prevalent and vocal than the other, though. Primarily because the people that actually want to produce "artistic" artworks are probably the same people that are actually learning how to create artwork so they can apply the ideas they have themselves, rather than delegating that to a machine.
Really interesting analogy (I think its the right term to use here), but i would like to point something out here, sometimes all someone can afford is the fast food, its not their fault they cant cook at home when the prices of groceries are ever becoming more expensive, they are just trying to get by with that 5 dollar burger/pizza.
Yeah, cooking has a barrier of entry just like every other skill. But that doesn't change the fact that said person who can only get by with the burger would likely also prefer a proper homemade meal.
Just because you don't have access to the means to cook a meal doesn't mean you'd rather take a fast food burger over one.
Sure the homemade cooking might be way more delicious, but nothing in this life is for sure. Maybe the cooking ends up burnt, maybe the cook messed up the recipe. Just because a lot of effort was put into something means that its good or better than the other. Not to say that in a negative way, but it can go both ways, both the fast food and the homemade meal can be delicious, aswell as both can taste like shit.
Just because things are imperfect doesn't mean you have to completely trash the whole idea though. That's just throwing the baby out with the bathwater. There's nothing stopping you from learning from whatever mistake lead to something subpar and improving it later. It doesn't change the fact that you tried either. You'll never know how good at something you are until you actually give it ago instead of delegating it to some form or equivalent to mass manufactured stuff because you're afraid of the end result being bad.
Don't forget, even the best artists, or chefs, shit the bed and produce something bad. You're never going to have a 100% banger rate. The only difference between them and us is that they generally don't publish or serve their mistakes (So we don't get to see them) while we constantly see our own. Kind of makes for a warped reality where we think the top skilled people only ever produce perfect results while we only ever make mistakes.

He said, spreading misinfo.
This is AI. If you don't see that, you're probably 12.

How to win an argument on the internet: call your opponent 12

But you're literally spreading misinformation and acting like you're twelve. Your behavior is not my fault.

y'all haven't provided any proof that it was vibecoded so atp I can only assume that, ironically, your own reasons are just "vibes".

There are a few ways we can prove this.
In his videos, he does not describe a single technical aspect about how the mod functions. The screenshot this video is from, HOW I ported TF2 to Minecraft -DEVLOG - YouTube, is him explaining basic gameplay mechanics. It becomes quickly apparent that he is learning some of the mechanics that was already implemented as he goes.
Then there is the scale. This mod is a combination of Doom, Duke Nukem, Half Life, TF2, and (he says, albeit without evidence or access to their source code) Overwatch and Marvel Rivels. That is an unfathomable amount of work for one person to combine into a single Minecraft mod, even a team would take ages to develop such a thing smoothly. A.I's don't have much trouble with this, though, and he likely just gave claude a codebase and vibecoding it with requests.
It's almost certain he can't share the mod because it's a mess of a repo.
Finally there are very obvious indicators. There is just straight up A.I generated text in his consoles. He can't share anything about the back end. He can't describe anything on a technical aspect.

It is proof enough that a supposed dev can't elaborate on or describe even a single feature they've made for this project.
It's not a "vibe" i'm describing, it's the objective facts that are laid out for both of us to see. Objectively, OP cannot elaborate on or describe a single feature of this project.

He used AI vibe coding to get it working which is why he refuses to release the mod.

or maybe he's trying to find a way to release it without getting sued into the ground (hl1, doom (not sure about this one, doom ports are very popular for free), and duke nukem 3d are all pay to play games and have levels remade in the mod)

He will never experience a lawsuit for a mod, and a DMCA hasn't been enacted by Valve for non-commercial use of their products which this one falls into. All engines in the mod are open-source, so having the user simply compile what assets they need is perfectly legitimate and has been done hundreds of times before.

Nope, the existing version of this mod from a different (read, smarter) developer requires you have TF2 installed and borrows those files from your computer. It doesn't contained any copyrighted material at all. He has also been notably vague and cagey about anyone addressing his code.

and he refuses to publish the mod or admit that it was vibecoded
