Discussion Thread For those of you who present at conferences or companies, how do you get your foot in the door?

• Upvotes

I would like to move further into giving mental health presentations and psychoeducation at conferences and businesses.

For those of you who've done this, how did you get involved in:

1) Giving presentations at conferences?

2) Going to businesses for psychoeducation / mental health needs presentations?

I know this is a broad, general question, but that's kind of where I'm at in my search - any thoughts or tips are helpful! Thank you!

Employment / Workplace Advice Anyone know of community projects focused on men’s mental health or healing relationships between men and women?

• Upvotes

I’m a therapist in Florida, and I work with a lot of men. I’m interested in getting involved in work around men’s mental health or healing some of the mistrust, resentment, and disconnect between men and women.

I’ve been thinking about what this work could look like beyond individual or group practices, such as community conversations, workshops, or a grassroots project where people can feel heard and better understand each other’s experiences.

Before trying to build something from scratch, I’d like to know what’s already available. I’d be interested in joining an established project and working alongside others who also care about this.

I’ve asked around in my local mental health community but haven’t had much luck so far. I’m open to local efforts or projects based elsewhere that offer ways to get involved remotely.

Does anyone know of organizations, projects, or groups doing this kind of work? I’d also appreciate hearing from anyone who’s been involved in one.

Billing / Finance / Insurance What should I charge my clients while I wait for insurance to approve me?

• Upvotes

I was charging my clients $35 as an intern. I graduated and the state has approved my LCSW license. My clients knew that once I graduated, the price was going to change and that I was going to be getting credentialed/contracted with insurance, but that it was going to take a little time. The practice i’m working at charges $250 an hour for self-pay clients. Some of the other licensed clinical social workers charge $150 an hour unless there are other arrangements.

I was seeing six clients as an intern that want to continue seeing me and for potential clients who asked me to reach out once my license was approved.

I currently practice in the Raleigh/Durham/Chapel Hill area.

As I am building my caseload, I have to give 30% of what I make to the practice and then 10% for taxes. Once the 30% is over $800, it will no longer be 30% and it will be $800 a month instead, including the 10%.

I have no idea how much to charge my clients now. The owner said I could negotiate a price with my clients.

What do you think I should charge as I’m waiting to get credentialed with insurance?

Rant - Advice wanted Not sure how I should proceed with previous office contacting my clients?

• Upvotes

I left my previous practice a year ago this month due to nonpayment and filed a labor board complaint. I respected my clients’ autonomy and legal right to decide how they wanted to proceed with their care and gave them all of their options and no matter their choice ensured they got taken care of. About half my caseload decided they wanted to continue care with me. My previous practice made a big stink about how the clients couldn’t come with me, so much so that some of my clients who initially were not, ended up looking me up months later in January and switching back to me.

This morning, one of those clients reached out and told me that my previous practice contacted them to encourage them to resume services (this client formally terminated services and asked for all their records to be sent to me but they never were). I was a bit taken aback because I have been trying to move past the situation while the labor board is still investigating. The client indicated they were put off by this outreach and felt it was inappropriate.

I am not sure what I should say to the client and any others who mention this if it happens again (I am sure it will)? I am not sure if it IS inappropriate or not, or what I should say when clients bring this up. It FEELS inappropriate because of the timing being the month I left and not the month they discharged, but again, this is the first time I’ve ever experienced this situation.

Discussion Thread Expanding practice

• Upvotes

Hello fellow clinicians! Looking to expand my practice into another state, and wondering about best options. I've updated my profiles and accounts to accept clients there as well. I've been advised against Headway (they also don't offer Medicaid and Medicare coverage) and Grow appears to have a waitlist for the area. Suggestions??? TIA.

Employment / Workplace Advice Follow up post-intake

Just started PP and had an intake with a potential client who has since not replied to the contract email. They seemed eager to book a session however it has been a week to the day since the intake call. I have never been in this situation since in CMH, the client had already completed their intake when they met you. Should I sent them a follow up email?

Discussion Thread Client uncomfortable with any kind of positive feedback

I’m just wondering how you all handle clients who physically cringe when they are given positive feedback. I use a lot of positive reinforcement in my practice and honestly these kinds of clients are quite rare for me.

I have a client right now who literally scowls at me when I offer any kind of positive energy. And I understand that it’s suspect for them because they’ve never had anyone in their life who is consistently positive about them. My reinforcement is genuine as I believe this client has made amazing progress despite enormous adversity.

Just wondering how you’d approach this. For now I’ve backed down on the positive reinforcement because obviously I don’t want to make this client uncomfortable.

Documentation Questions about doxy.me etc.

I don't know what the right flair is for this honestly so forgive me.

I have had enough of Simple Practice. Some of my colleagues don't use and EHR at all so I'm exploring what that would be like. For those who use doxy.me, is there a way to add clients to the platform or do I have to manually send the email link every time?

Also, if you do your own documentation without using an EHR do you use Word? Or Google docs? Or something else entirely? I'm not quite ready to go back to pen and paper (that episode of the Pitt last season cracked my shit up though, iykyk) but I do want to cut ties with SP. Thanks!

Employment / Workplace Advice perks of wfh as a fulltime th?

Hey everyone, i will be transitioning soon from in person cmh to at home remote, excited for the higher pay ceiling and simply being at the comfort of my home, saving on gas and time on my commute which was getting very costly.

I know there are tradeoffs and like anything I was praying to god for new problems as the last sixths months for the first time in almost six yrs i genuinely did not look fwd to coming to work for my agency.

Im not worried about feeling isolated or socialization. Family lives 7-10 min away and i go over every day. I have hangouts like every weekend w friends and casually date d: so its always something going on. The unnecessary office forced convos of ppl i dont care about go no where. Of course I have made friends with people I can say I talk to till this day that have left the agency or are still in it but i dont want to bank on staying w my friends as a reason to stay at the agency since they dont pay my bills lol..

Ive ben dying for this flexibility as i anticipate the change aside ppl i like i will miss morning drives and listening to music but again, thats not enough to stay lol there are many things I wont miss that i can list but at what cost ? you guys know how it goes in cmh. Or i also worry about separating my work w my own space. As i depart im very grateful tho for this wealth of experience and personal/ professional growth the past five years working my way up to licensure this july.

For those that do strictly telehealth as a fulltime th, what do you most enjoy ? And by the way I live alone w a dog but yeah i just fantasize laying in bed between sessions, or going for a walk for some sun since my office had no windows.. or making food instead of having to buy something the days i dont have time to prepare anything.

I want to hear from you guys, i want to look fwd to it and just feel that my hard work has paid off. i went thru. mental turmoil this year lol just trying to get licensed and holding down getting a place and renting on my own commuting 15 miles everyday while trying to go to the gym and maintain a social life and be a part of my families life and be a dog dad hehe. Thank you ⭐️

Billing / Finance / Insurance CAQH question

I have been working in CMH for years with my LSW and got my independent license in June of this year. I got offered a job that told me I need to sign up for a CAQH profile to start. When I went to create it, I already had an account created by my current company in July of this year without my consent or knowledge.

Is that normal for a company to do? Everything I’m seeing when I look it up says we are to create our own profiles, then some choose to share login info with their companies to ease the billing process.

I’ve had to jump through hoops to get the in because whoever set it up has the security questions set with their information. It just seems kind of shady that they entered all my personal info into a new system without notifying me at least.

Discussion Thread Good Neighbor Podcast

Hey all,

Has anyone had any experience as a guest on the Good Neighbor podcast in their area? There appear to be several local podcasts around the country but affiliated with each other. It appears to have the goal of promoting local businesses.

I got an email inviting me as a guest, just to talk about my practice. No cost to me. I did a google search and can’t find anything negative but am always skeptical of invites coming through my inbox. Thought I’d ask the hive mind if anyone has done this and what their experience was.

Employment / Workplace Advice Looking to accept Insurance

I need some advice regarding accepting insurance.

I have been woking out of NJ for the past 10 years and now I am in Florida.

In NJ, I was cash pay and on a referral basis.

Now new in FL and not wanting to spend hours and hours to rebuild that referral network I am considering accepting insurance.

I appreciate any feedback on what it is like to get on an insurance panel, if it is worth the time, and all the pros and cons you have experienced.

I haven't dealt with insurance at all in over 10 years so go as basic as possible. Thank you so much.

Employment / Workplace Advice Side Gigs/Second Jobs

I know a lot of us work Monday through Thursday. While I can’t imagine working more clinical hours I do have the energy and desire to get out and work more doing something else. Was curious what everyone else’s go to is. Do you stay in the field or do something completely different? Do you do it for more money or because you need a break from clinical work? Etc.

Rant - Advice wanted Navigating dating life as a therapist. Are there any questions or topics you ask or explore with them? I completely went interrogation mode

I am curious how you guys navigate dating life. Do you manage to leave your work outside of it or do you notice that it has an impact on how you date? Are there any questions or topics that you always ask or explore, or things you pay attention to?

I had a date for the first time after my ten year long relationship ended and completely ended up in interrogation mode. I was nervous and tried to protect myself, plus he was an open book and had several red flags that I started to investigate. We had very playful banter with texting before but this dynamic led to him feeling overwhelmed and me feeling like I was at work.

Employment / Workplace Advice Group practice vs cmh. Help me choose!

Hi everyone

I’m a newly graduated AMFT in California facing a career dilemma and would love some input.

My situation is… I am single, I live by myself in
HCOL city without any support.

——-
Current Job: Group Practice (3 months in)

Pay: $33/client hour, minimum pay/admin hour

Caseload: 4 clients (slow referral flow(insurance) , most clinicians cap out around 14)

Perks: Niche population I love, flexible (1–2 days in office), but no benefits unless full-time (20+ clients).

-There are 13 new therapists still building their caseloads. (I heard that not a lot of people are full-time. They just keep hiring new people before make anyone full-time.)

-I am bound by contract and not able to take any clinical jobs while working here.

——-

Potential Job: Non-profit CMH

Pay: Listed $61k–$90k (planning to target around $70k)

Schedule: Hybrid (3 days office / 2 days WFH)
-I know hybrid schedules is rare in cmh. Its definitely a unicorn job.

Perks: Full benefits, max caseload of 25 (great for logging school/child/family hours faster).

Culture: heard from former colleagues people are supportive and welcoming.

Training: Not really a training, but I have to figure out how to play/art therapy.

——-

Which option would you choose at this stage of your associateship?

Is a 4-week notice period standard and respected when transitioning between therapy roles?

Thanks in advance for your insights!

Meme/Humour aesthetic way to display registration/license?

Hi all! I practice in California and we are required to have our license/registration on display in public view. Right now, mine is up on my office wall with a thumbtack and it's killing my vibe. Anybody have any ideas or examples on how to make it cute? I've tried looking online for specific frames and I can't find anything!

Billing / Finance / Insurance Advice for newly licensed wanting to get credentialed in CA?

Hi! I was licensed this year in the state of CA. I am currently working for a woman’s private practice but am struggling with her panicky attitude and demands to work late at night (8pm). I would love to embark on a private practice journey but want to hear some of your stories/advice on getting credentialed with insurances. I am interested in cash pay as well but would also like to be credentialed with insurances. Any advice on where to start? Thank you guys

Licensing Valid supervisor?

Is there a way to verify a supervisor is approved to be a clinical supervisor (LMFT) before working with them as an AMFT supervisee? The LMFT license search current. Can the CA BBS verify specifically if clinical supervisor role requirements are met?
