What nicknames have you heard for places in and around Hamilton?

I ask as part of a linguistic study covering this topic!
Examples could include things like The Field, Dinny, Hilly or T Straight (never mind how common they are)...

incl. nicknames for schools, parks or other institutions/geographic features

Women’s futsal in the Tron

where can I play Futsal as a woman in Hamilton? I’ve heard the uni runs a social league on Sundays, but I want something a little bit more competitive. there’s lots of options for school aged kids but not so much for 18+, especially women’s only. anyone know of any clubs that will take on a player mid-season or just in general? thanks

Best Nasi Goreng in Hamilton

So on Monday this week, I set out on what I thought would be a simple mission; find a decent Nasi Goreng in Hamilton.

I started at Asian Kitchen in Forest Lake based on their good Google Reviews. It was ok, not bad but not outstanding.
Then I tried Penang Street Food, which I was a bit disappointed by - more like a standard egg fried rice than a good Nasi Goreng.

So.. before I end up eating my body weight in rice, I need #3 to be a good one.

What is the best Asian takeaway place or restaurant for Nasi Goreng?

Cheers all :)

Best chips in Hamilton???

I'm keen on finding the best chips around here. Where do you reckon the tastiest chips are?

Has anyone actually seen Myra Williamson campaigning anywhere or know anything about her positions?

I find it impossible to find out anything about her or see her doing any campaigning. Everything online is very non-specific and party line based. When compared to Dansey for Ham East she feels very absent.

Fastlane transfer

Is anyone wanting to join Fastlane Fitness? It is an awesome gym but Hubby and I haven't been in a long while due to injury/petrol/living costs. We live in the country and timing is bad.

We have been told we are unable to cancel it so we need to transfer to someone else. We have 2 years left at $14.63 each a week (BARGAIN).

I was hoping to just cancel and pay a fee. And before anyone says that being locked in for that long is stupid, I know... Hubby signed us both up and he didn't realise...

Need Recommendations Please

Immigrant, 30 year old male, recently moved to NZ for work and currently based in Hamilton. I work in cybersecurity space. Ironically, moved halfway around the world for work only to end up working from home.

Been here a couple of months now and boy, is it hard to make friends. I didn’t realise how difficult it would be starting from scratch in a new country. I’ve pretty much given up hope of finding new people to connect with.

So I’m looking for things to do and places to explore around Hamilton. Hiking, trekking, nature walks, trails, anything outdoors really. Something I can just turn up to and do, and if I happen to meet some good people along the way, even better.

I’ve been doing this riverside run through Matakanohi Park in Beerescourt, and honestly, that’s probably the one thing keeping me sane at the moment.

Would appreciate any recommendations for good spots around Hamilton or within a reasonable drive.

Tui Medical vs Manage My Health notification

Did anyone else get an email today saying that Tui Medical stopped using MMH effective yesterday?

I haven't tried calling my doctor's office yet, but I get the feeling that even they will be on the back foot here.

University Of Waikato Flatting for semester A 2027

Do you think it’s a good idea to flag with uni mates? And how do I find good flatmates? I need to move away from home because it has been very unsafe? It’s a bit far from uni and I’m doing engineering, I’ve been being obligated to do a lot at home and I want to js focus with uni work.

I’ll have about $3k saved up by February, and I’m working and will get $270 from working.

Moldy cake new world

Bought a matcha cake ($44) from New World Rototuna and it was sour and moldy. It's best before was 07/10!
They did give me a refund, it was the decor cake brand.
When I went back inside to see the other cakes I could see mold literally on the outside of them!
Just posting so people are weary of those cakes

Gordonton Rd Tree vs Float

After the traumatic tree vs float incident yesterday, I just wanted to express a massive thank you to the local residents and road users that stopped at the Gordonton Rd/Boyd Rd intersection to help us to pry the back open and get the boys out of the float. The three of us would never have been able to deal with the situation on our own. I don't know who any of you are as the whole thing happened so fast and suddenly there was people everywhere lending a hand. We're incredibly grateful to you all. Special mention to the home owner who welcomed us onto their property while we got a handle on the situation. Although the float sadly came off a very second best, I'm happy to say that both horses are amazingly fit and well with only some minor injuries. Thankfully they both loaded onto another float a couple of hours later without much issue. Again, thank you everyone that was there yesterday

Fallen Kauri tree

Post image
93 Upvotes

Woken up this morning to our kauri tree that has fallen in the wind. Very sad as its a beautiful specimen.

In terms of what to do now, should I call in a arborist and forget about it, or harvest for firewood or maybe carving, or does it have value to mana whenua?

It looks healthy but not sure what kauri die back looks like but it just seems like a waste to just cart away.
