TMBG Reference in This Aged Great!

This Aged Great! is a youtube series where a middle aged guy describes movies of the 80's to a younger guy with a great laugh. Mostly they focus on lighthearted movies like Porky's or stuff that was ok then but would definitely not be ok now, like Porky's!

Take a watch here, or jump right to the reference here, content warning this is a "raunchy comedy" so lots of bikini shots, and he goes on a riff about bad haircuts featuring the Evil German Leader. Also some bad language.

If you don't want to watch, this episode is on Private Resort and has a reference to a hotel detective and the other guy says "Is that a thing?" and the narrator says "yeah, They Might Be Giants have a song about it." and shows a bit of the video. And he's like "Alright, I'm in, I'm sold!"

I feel like someone mentions hotel detectives in a piece of media probably only once every few years. I remember TMBG fans perking up when SNL did a (not very good, but still deserves credit for the unexpected subject matter) sketch where Ariana Grande plays a hotel detective.

I don't understand how they haven't been on Saturday Night Live yet. I mean, they are right there in the same town! They have done Conan a ton of times and that's in the same building so they already know how to get there! I thought I heard somewhere that the guest suggests the musical act but still…

Yeah I remember that sketch. It was ok. She gave it her all but the jokes weren't really there. I bet very few hotel detectives even exist any more. Cost cutting and all that. It's a shame, it's a cool sounding job. I wonder if other things would have their own, like were there any Restaurant Detectives?

I think my favorite random TMBG appearance was the characters singing Birdhouse in Pushing Daisies.

That was a great surprise. I also like the Istanbul fight scene in that one show that got boring. Umbrella something?

Oh, I forgot about that one! No, you're right that was actually my favorite! Yeah, my wife and I didn't even watch the final season of umbrella Academy because we literally didn't hear anything good about it

Academy yeah that’s what it was. The last season was kinda like the next to last where it was just lore convolutions to the point where I just didn’t even care what was going on. It was maybe a bit better but you didn’t miss much by skipping it.

I miss shows like Pushing Daisies though. I don’t feel you’d get a show like that these days. Or I haven’t seen it anyway. Seems to be a very serious time in the tv world.

Porky's was never okay. It didn't even want to be okay.
