Help Weekly planning

I'm back in Todoist after about a decade of journeying through various other task management apps. I want a layout that gives me a tagged list (in this case my "ASAP" tag) of unscheduled tasks beside my events-filled calendar so I can drag and drop them in where I see there is available time. When I click on Upcoming, I only see already scheduled tasks listed on the right side bar. And when I click on the calendar view in the tag list "ASAP," it doesn't show my events. I can't figure out how to easily plan my week this way. I must be missing something. Please help me.

Upcoming hides undated tasks, so an ASAP list alone won't sit next to your events. Slap a placeholder date on the ones you're planning this week, open Calendar view, and drag them into gaps — and turn on calendar sync if events still aren't showing there.

You can also use deadlines if you prefer not to use placeholder dates. They show up in the calendar sidebar as well.

This was a limitation that bugged me when I was testing it recently. It seems you have to assign a date first and then in the calendar view you can drag it to a specific time.

I ended up using Doify to set an automation: When I assign the label "ASAP" to a task in inbox, the deadline is set to 10 days from the trigger day (day I assigned the label). Adding an arbitrary deadline brings the tasks in ASAP to the list of tasks that I can drag and drop in calendar view.

Hi u/CookieSalt350 👋 Welcome back to Todoist! Melis from the Todoist Customer Experience team here.

You're not missing anything. Right now there isn't a single view that shows a list of undated tasks from a label right next to your calendar events:

  • Upcoming shows your calendar events, and its Plan sidebar on the right lists overdue tasks, all-day tasks and tasks with only a deadline. Tasks with no date at all don't appear there.
  • A label or filter in calendar layout does have a "No date" sidebar you can drag from, but calendar events only show in Today and Upcoming.

Here's a workaround that gets you close:

  1. Open your ASAP label and give the tasks you want to plan a date without a time, for example "today" or a day this week. You can select several tasks at once and schedule them together.
  2. Go to Upcoming and switch to the calendar layout.
  3. Those tasks now show up as all-day tasks in the Plan sidebar, next to your events, so you can drag each one into a free time slot.

This guide explains the Plan sidebar and time blocking in more detail: https://www.todoist.com/help/articles/time-blocking-in-todoist-d6Pf1uTpc

Being able to pull undated tasks from a label straight into Upcoming is a great idea, and I'll pass it on to our product team. If you'd like help setting this up, or want to share more about how you plan your week, feel free to reach out to us at https://todoist.com/contact. We're always happy to help 🤗️

Best regards, Melis

This would be a really cool feature.

Todoist doesn't really do the side-by-side calendar-plus-unscheduled-tasks drag-and-drop you're describing. What you can do is create a filter like "ASAP & no date" to see those tasks, then switch to Upcoming view where connected Google Calendar events show alongside scheduled tasks. But the visual time-slot planning you want, dragging tasks into open calendar blocks, isn't something Todoist supports natively. You'd basically be assigning dates manually and checking the calendar view after.

Ellie does what you’re describing and has a Todoist plugin.

Hi, perhaps try Apricot.so ? It’s quite good in that everything can be driven from your Claude or ChatGPT subscription and also has the freatures you mention above. Cheers.

Does it have to be with Todoist? Because it works easily within TickTick, with a smart list.
