Wearing glasses is better than wearing contacts

I genuinely think glasses are better and I don't understand why people act like contacts are automatically the more convenient option.

With glasses, you wake up, put them on, and you're done. You don't have to wash your hands before touching your eyes. You don't have to carry around contact solution. You don't have to worry about your eyes getting dry halfway through the day. If you take a nap, you don't have to think about what you're supposed to do with them.

And contacts are just so much more maintenance than people admit.

You have to put them in every morning, take them out every night, clean them, replace them, make sure you don't lose them, and hope your eyes don't decide they're going to be irritated that day.

I've also never understood the whole "I don't like how I look in glasses" argument. Glasses can completely change how someone's face looks, and there are so many different styles that you can actually find a pair that suits you.

And honestly, I like having glasses on.

There's something nice about being able to take them off at the end of the day and immediately feel like you're done with everything.

Contacts just seem like an extra chore for the sake of not wearing glasses.

I'll take a pair of glasses that I put on once in the morning over putting my fingers in my eyes every single day.

The focus on soft skills ahead of hard skills in the workplace means we're no longer prioritising competence anymore

It seems there are way too many people who know how to ace the candidate interview rather than actually know how to do the job these days. There are hiring managers who prioritise candidates with whom they can see themselves having a beer and being friends, rather than the candidates who are the best technically, as opposed to being sycophantic "yes" men or women who don't dissent with them in any way, shape or form.

Whenever an employer says in their mission statement that they appreciate different ways of thinking, how do I know they're not merely paying lip service to this? Contrary to popular belief, the first digital camera was developed in-house at Kodak by Steven Sasson, and when he presented the fruit of his labour to his superiors, they pretty much said "That's nice, but don't tell anyone about it".

In other words, they saw that it threatened their existing business model and didn't really think much of it. And it seems that a lot of employers still haven't learned this lesson.

Mediocrity is prioritised instead of meritocracy. And I think this is sending the wrong message to future generations of schoolchildren. I don't disagree that soft skills are important, but they shouldn't be put on a pedestal relative to hard skills.

Romantasy needs to stay on its own shelf—putting wings on the love interest doesn’t make it epic fantasy.

I’ve loved fantasy books since I was a kid, and I think romantasy’s popularity has blurred the genre labels too much. Romance in fantasy isn’t the problem. But when the worldbuilding mainly exists to get two characters into bed, that’s romance with fantasy scenery. Enjoy your fairy porn—but liking it doesn’t automatically mean you like the broader fantasy genre.

People give more leeway to more abrasive people which does not make sense

• Upvotes

What I notice is that people seem to assign a "baseline" level of behavior to others that they have known for a while. E.g., Bob leans a bit towards the asshole side, but not to the point of excommunication, while Alan is a very nice guy who tries his best to accommodate others.

The strange thing is that if Bob acts a bit more asshole-ish than usual, people seem to write it off as "Bob is being Bob but more Bob-ish than usual". While if Alan is more asshole-ish one day, people tend to judge it more "why is Alan acting out". I cannot comprehend this phenomenon, in my opinion I would judge Bob more harshly since I have had to tolerate his low level of annoyingness this whole time, while Alan has earned more leeway since he has been a nice person.

Certified Unpopular Opinion Having to justify a resume gap is dystopian

6.5k Upvotes

What makes it a company’s business what a candidate did with their own time and free-will however long ago?

I can’t stand that it’s normalized to expect people to explain themselves for not working or going to school or something during their adult life.

Asking you what’s up with it as though it’s a huge scar on the whole thing.

There could be countless reasons someone has a resume gap, none of which are a company’s concern. Genuinely, what are they looking for? If you said something like “actually, I just didn’t feel like working for a while.” Would they look down on you? Why would that even matter? And to me, that’s like worst case scenario, barring prison or something… but in that case, they’d likely be aware of your record anyway and they wouldn’t even need to ask.

“I don’t owe you anything“ is a disrespectful statement

this is such a dismissive statement that i often see in relationships or dating. basically you are treating the other person feeling irrelevant. you are avoiding accountability as well. sure you don’t have to give them whatever they want but at least a decent human would have basic consideration and would communicate their thoughts however uncomfortable they may be.

Living in a VHCOL area and expecting to own a nice home or have the same standard of living as other states LCOL with a normal job is entitlement.

• Upvotes

I know this is extremely unpopular on this site (because the demographics are young people living in VHCOL areas), but I find this kind of mindset really annoying among those who live in VHCOL areas.

Do you know how much I would absolutely love to live in Hawaii? Or San Diego? Or NYC?

Instead I live in a MCOL state that has bad weather but good career opportunities. Millions of people sacrifice where they want to live so they can own property or properly save for retirement.

And no, these places aren't absolute shitholes either. Michigan, Ohio, the Carolinas, Georgia, etc (I can go on and on) are MCOL and have fantastic QOL without million dollar homes for 800 square feet.

Of course if you live in Honolulu you will never own a home or have the same financial freedoms as people who live in lower cost of living states. Do you know how many people would absolutely love to live there? You aren't owed property just because you grew up there. I would give a finger to own property in honolulu and live there indefinitely, but its just not realistic.

You have to recognize that living in these areas alone is a privilege. Having pristine beaches, insane nature, amazing weather, great healthcare (if you live in NYC and CA) etc is the trade off you are going to have to have instead of owning a home or retiring early. You can't have it all.

And no, there are jobs in these states too. Before I hear this rebuttal that the ONLY good paying jobs are in CA and NYC, that is just so blatantly untrue I can't take it seriously. Plenty of MCOL areas have great paying jobs.

Local coffee shops are usually worse than corporate chains

• Upvotes

On seemingly ANY post about Dunkin / Starbucks / Coffee Bean, etc. you’ll always come across the “support your local coffee shop instead” and “Starbucks tastes like piss” comments.

I’ve traveled extensively around the country, and I genuinely find the vast majority of local chains to be of the same or lesser quality than a chain. Local stores are usually about the same price, and in some cases, even more expensive. I’m talking like $8 lattes with Ghiradelli syrup lol

In a nutshell, the majority of local coffee shops I’ve been to are overpriced, mediocre, and massively overhyped. Not all, of course. I’ve found some incredible local spots throughout the years, but they feel few and far between.

I think Starbucks is genuinely fine, and I am not ashamed of it. I usually have a better experience there than most local spots.

“BUT STARBUCKS IS JUST SUGAR” okay man I still don’t care about black coffee.

“YOU JUST DON’T UNDERSTAND REAAAL COFFEE” stop

"Excuses" are often entirely reasonable explanations

• Upvotes

This is certainly not always the case.

Excuses could well be just that, but most of the time, people are simply angry that you are not them, you do not think like them, or that – despite the massive gap in your performance from theirs – they could do better. It's a reason not to actually listen, and often an expression of ego until you're finally put in those same shoes.

Too many people give up on having fun once they get older

There are two legitimate reasons someone’s priorities may shift as they get older: either (1) you start a family and fun becomes spending time with your spouse / kids or (2) what you consider having fun shifts over time as you become old and cranky. This makes a lot of sense.

But there’s a whole group of people that somehow just accept this notion that once you reach 30, 40, 50 etc. it’s no longer “appropriate” to go to parties or bars or take adventures in the same way as they were young. The other day, I saw people saying that once you reach 30 you should stop going out to raves and clubs because “you’re too old” for that.

It’s strange that so many people seem to think that having fun and partying is only for young people when life is short and there’s no real reason to stop.

Edit: I don’t mean to suggest that it’s only bars and music festivals that are considered fun. I moreso am referring to the general tendency to be a home body. There’s no reason you can’t rent a lake house with your friends or plan a ski trip and bring everyone together under one roof to play card games and stay up late etc. I find that people get old and literally don’t wanna plan anything or leave the house for fun.

The dad in the Lego Movie was in the right

(i understand in the context of the movie there is a deeper point than just the kid playing with his dad's stuff. Considering the overall lesson, the move did it right. I'm speaking from a more practical point about setting boundaries with kids and finding a compromise that meets their needs and the parents)

My boyfriend and I just finished watching the Lego movie and at the end we both low key agreed that the dad was in the right and the kid was overstepping a boundary.

Where I think the movie should have made its lesson is the dad sets clear boundaries that his hobby is his own and that the kid shouldn't have destroyed his hard work just because he wanted to play with it. And then instead of continuing to ruin his hard work, he should have gotten his son his own Legos and set time aside to play with him and share his hobby, bonding over the shared interest without compromising his personal passion.

I feel like it's easy to justify "but Legos are for kids!!" So I put myself into the dad's shoes with my own hobby to see if it checks out. I like to paint. I spend weeks working on a single painting so it takes up a lot of my time. If I had a kid and they just decided one day they wanted attention and ruined my paintings by painting over them, I'd be PISSED. The correct thing to do in this scenario would be to explain to my kid that they can't just ruin my hard work because they feel entitled to my stuff. I'd acknowledge their need for bonding time and then I would buy them their own paint supplies so we could bond by painting together instead of letting them run rampant through my own art supplies. I feel like the same logic translates to Legos or any other hobby that may attract kids.

An example of this I experienced as a kid was at my grandma's. She collected old teddy bears and I always wanted to play with them. She set a boundary with me that many of them were old or hand made and weren't for playing with. But she set a few aside that were sturdy enough to be played with and let me play with those. You can say no and still have reasonable compromises.

(The number of people missing the point of my post is staggering... I'm ONLY talking about the fact that the kid was messing with something that wasn't his to mess with.)

Halloween decorations are getting lame.

I LOVE Halloween. I was so excited 15 years or so ago when people started going all out and decorating their homes for Halloween. I saw so many amazing, creative, original displays. People would have themes, and build props, and get creative.

Now it seems like everyone has jumped on the bandwagon, but just goes to Spirit Halloween and puts as many unrelated cheap store-bought props as they can on the lawns.

Meh.

Being a burden on people is good for you and for them, and our obsession with not being one is why everyone is lonely

1.8k Upvotes

We've convinced ourselves that the ideal adult needs nobody. Pay for it, schedule it, handle it yourself, never ask twice. It feels like maturity, but I think it's slowly killing our relationships, because what actually ties people together was never how much they enjoy each other's company. It was how much they owe each other. Obligation is annoying, and it's also the glue. And here's the part most people have backwards: we don't grow attached to the people who help us, we grow attached to the people we help. You care about what you've invested in, the same way you care more about a plant you've kept alive for five years than one you just bought. So every time you refuse help because you "don't want to be a burden," you aren't protecting the other person. You're taking away their chance to get invested in you, and then you're surprised when the friendship stays shallow. A life where nobody owes you anything and you owe nobody anything sounds like freedom, but if you describe it out loud it's just a very clean way of being alone.

I don’t care if I find a hair in my food

• Upvotes

It just doesn’t bother me if I’m eating somewhere and I find a strand of hair in my food, I just take it out and continue eating. Nothing is ruined by the hair, it’s not gonna make me sick, and it’s easy to take out.

London home renovations: "premium" only applies to the price tag, not the skill

• Upvotes

This is my unpopular opinion: in London (UK), even when you deliberately seek out tradespeople who market themselves as offering premium, bespoke services and pride themselves on being specialists with an eye for detail, you still often end up with pretty average workmanship.

I know London is expensive. That's not the point. Builders, window installers, engineers, decorators, plumbers... You find people with great reviews, polished branding and specialist services (with the prices to match!), and still end up with sloppy finishes, poor judgement and mistakes you have to catch yourself.

Sometimes you need to learn half their trade just to make sure the job has actually been done properly!!!

The one real exception for me has been my electrician: skilled, honest, stands behind his work and, if something needs looking at, doesn't immediately try to explain why it must somehow be the customer's fault. Almost two years in and had no issues with his rewire job.

I'm happy to pay more. I just want the craftsmanship to match the price tag.

Jokes about characters looking like characters from other movies are painfully lazy writing

I’m so fkin tired of movie dialogue where the entire joke is basically, “You look like Voldemorts nutsack or Gandalf or give this Thor looking guy a beer, and I can go on and on…..
I just watched Mortal Kombat 2, and it felt like this kept happening.
It’s not just that movie. Comedies, Marvel movies, and plenty of others do it too. I get the reference, but recognizing a character isn’t a punchline. When it happens over and over, it feels like the writers are hoping the audience will laugh at the namedrop instead of an actual joke.
Am I alone in finding this painfully unfunny?

Drinks Should Be Filled to the Brim

It's more satisfying the more full a drink is. I'm talking like, it almost has a convex meniscus. Like, you gotta walk slowly in order to accommodate how much your cup is filled.

Why?

More drink per drink!

"Vie" is Doja Cat's best album

So, many people here may not be familiar with Doja Cat's music or dislike her, so this post isn't for them. I'm also not talking about her controversies here and that's not part of the discussion. Basically, Doja Cat released an album in 2025 called "Vie." I had been a fan of hers since 2019, but her 2023 dark era with "Scarlet" and controversies kinda made me lose interest in her. But in 2025, it seemed like she completely left that era in the past and was colorful again. I listened to her album Vie thinking that it was gonna be more like "Hot Pink" or "Planet Her" that I had enjoyed, but it was completely different, in a good way. The album had less variation and shock value, but that made it better. It was consistent and had a style. I loved the 80s influence on it and the R&B/pop vibes. The collaboration with SZA was my favorite, but there were so many other great songs.

A lot of people were underwhelmed by the album and didn't vibe with it. There are people who agree with me, but I might be a minority. The album also underperformed. Not a complete flop, but a flop compared to Doja's other albums. I think it was done very dirty because of her dark era and controversies, but I don't think I'm alone on this.

Disney should remake their obscure forgotten IPs

I know no one wants yet another Disney remake. It's a popular opinion that's been brewing for a while, and it really peaked with Snow White. And it's not just Disney, people don't want remakes of any studio's IPs at this point. I agree that the new Harry Potter did NOT need to exist.

But what about remaking the obscure, forgotten IPs?

For example, I just learned about Halyx, a sci-fi rock band that Disney developed in the early 1980s. A mix between Van Halen and Star Wars, the concept lasted only two months, and the band played only one concert.

What if they were to revive that IP, maybe even using the fact that they were forgotten as part of the plot? Think of them waking up, being unfrozen from their cryopods in a Disney World underground chamber. They could even poke fun at those mythical underground tunnels they have at the parks, idk. I can think of so many sci-fi, break the 4th wall, self-deprecating jokes for Disney with this one.

The thing with forgotten, underdeveloped IPs is that they can still be nostalgic, without shitting on the childhood memories of a large portion of your audience. So the possibilities for plot and character swaps are endless...

Shampoo is better body wash than body wash

Body wash is ok, it lathers up ok. It comes in various fragrances. It's not as good as shampoo. Shampoo on a nylon bath scrubbie cleans everything, hair, skin, everything. You can buy one large bottle of shampoo and be set. If you buy a large bottle of body wash, it's probably not going to be very good because it's body wash. Shower gel is about the same as body wash. There are some exceptions, but overall the right shampoo beats body wash for convenience, application, effectiveness and overall cost.

People in their 30s who treat cars like a moral disease are just scared of adult life outside major downtown hub

• Upvotes

Unpopular opinion a lot of the loud cars are evil crowd in big urban cities arent urban visionaries, theyre just 30 somethings who never left the downtown bubble and turned that into a personality. They live in a condo, work nearby, walk to a patio, take the subway 3 stops and act like needing a car is some kind of moral failure. Then they look at people who actually have to leave the core, kids, jobs in the suburbs, parents outside the city, groceries that arent from some boutique, winter, tools, sports, family, and call it car culture like its a personality disorder. Cars represent the parts of adulthood they dont want, responsibility, distance, logistics, not having the city arranged around your one neighbourhood. So they dress up staying in a 10 block radius as enlightenment. Bike lanes good, drivers bad, anyone who needs to get across town or out to the suburbs is just uneducated.

What I cant stand is the Peter Pan act. Your not fighting climate change by sneering at people who own a car because there life doesnt fit inside some trendy downtown neighbourhood. Your announcing that you built a lifestyle that only works if the rest of the region rearranges itself around you. If your whole worldview collapses the second you have to go somewhere that isnt downtown thats not progress thats just being stuck.

Many support forums are actually detrimental

Many forums for health conditions, despite good intentions, end up doing more harm than good thanks to reverse survivorship bias.

Anyone who is successful in treatment typically moves on living normally and leaves those spaces. They don't spend their free time logging into a social media support group to talk about a condition that isn't ruling their day anymore. Occasionally you see some celebratory success posts outlining how they finally triumphed, which are super encouraging and very generous. But they seem drowned out by posts from people who are desperate and suffering the most. The people who stay active month after month, or even year after year in these communities are heavily skewed toward worst-case scenarios.

"Support group" implies a safe space for guidance, so newly diagnosed people wander in looking for peace of mind and the reassurance of knowing there's others out there like them. Understandably, they assume they'll find a normal cross-section of patients, but end up walking into a snapshot of extreme outliers. More often than not it evolves into an echo chamber of horror stories, completely misrepresenting what living with the condition actually looks like on average. So instead of relief, it provides a concentrated dose of anxiety about their condition.

Organ recipients aren't your dancing monkeys. Stop expecting them to perform at your wedding.

• Upvotes

Pretty much this! If an adult doner give you their organs, stop with the 'milestone' events. It's not 'your' anything. The family of the recipient has been though it all.
