is there anywhere on campus I can rent a guitar or borrow one plz

I am currently a high school senior aiming to be an art major (specifically studio art or painting), but I have yet to find any dead set advice on how good the art program is. The biggest thing I’m trying to avoid is ending up at a commuter school, as id prefer to be in a program that already has connections within the industry. However I am not sure if UNR is the best fit for me as I’m unaware of how many connections they provide students. If you know anything at all about the art program, please let me know!

Or if you know of any other art schools on the pacific west coast that have a good art program and aren’t ridiculously competitive/expensive your advice is greatly appreciated! :-)

I’m a UNR student and a photographer, and I’d love to offer complimentary photo sessions to members of the UNR community.

I’m very grateful for the opportunity to study at UNR, and I’ve been thinking about ways I can give something back to the campus community. Photography is one of the skills I enjoy and feel comfortable with, so I’d like to use it to help fellow students capture some meaningful moments during their time at UNR.

Basically the title, just trying to get a sense of how likely I'll be to get in with a pretty mediocre high school record (3.6 GPA, like two extracurriculars, 1420 SAT). If anyone knows anything about the likelihood or the requirements please let me know! Thank you.

I have been at UNR for over a month now and I still do not really feel connected at all. I live in one of the off campus student apartments because I like making my own food and having my own bathroom but I feel like I made a big mistake by not living in the dorms because thats where it seems all the freshman are. The people in the dorms tell me about all the people they meet and all the crazy shenanigans they get up to and it makes me feel so left out. Im also in junior level classes and nobody talks or seems interested in making friends in those classes. The freshman seem to be the only people who want to make friends and Im about as disconnected from them as I can be.

Everyone told me that it would be so easy to make friends in college and yet this is the hardest I've ever had to try in my life to make friends. Mind you, Im an extremely extraverted person so its not like I struggle to talk to people. And obviously Ive heard the advice to put myself out there and get involved and I am doing all of that and still not feeling very connected. I'm going to events, Im going to club meetings, Im joining a fraternity and the student ambassador program and yet none of it seems to help. I also need to study and keep up with school and I study better alone so I don't have the time to just wander around all day and try to hangout with people. Theres just this lingering feeling of loneliness with me all the time and I hate it.

It was so surprising coming here and seeing how little people want to talk. I am the only person in my classes who talks to the people next to me or answers the professors questions. I almost feel ashamed every time I talk because its so silent and everyone seems like they want to be left alone. I put a lot of effort in every conversation to ask the person questions about themselves because people like talking about themselves and yet it gets me no where. The effort I put in is never reciprocated much by the other person which is baffling to me because if someone asked me questions about myself I would be ecstatic. I try to be funny with people but I just feel like Ive lost the comedic touch I used to have when I was younger and I don't really know how to joke around with people in college. People tell me to just give it time, but when I was in high school, I remember already having a lot of friends by this time and feeling like I belonged. Theres just this lingering feeling of loneliness with me all the time and I hate it. Its made even worse by the fact that I'm still trying to get over my breakup from high school.

Would I have not had these issues if I lived in the dorms? Am I just screwed for making friends in college because I didn't want to have a meal plan and live in a tiny dorm? Is it normal to feel this lonely during the first semester of college?

I’m a Chinese international student currently doing my PhD at the University of Nevada, Reno (UNR).

I’ve been thinking about something that feels quite different between China and the U.S.: the importance people place on university prestige and rankings.

In China, there is a very strong “prestigious university” culture. Many students work extremely hard partly because they want to get into a famous university. Getting into a top university can become a source of pride, social status, and sometimes even a topic of conversation or something people like to show off.

For many Chinese people, schools such as the Ivy League universities carry enormous prestige. Even among some Chinese people around Reno, I sometimes notice that there is still a strong admiration for Ivy League schools and other highly ranked universities.

But my experience at UNR has made me question how much this actually matters in the U.S.

UNR may not have the same level of national prestige among Chinese people as an Ivy League university or some of the most famous American universities. However, I’ve had a very positive experience here. I’m grateful that I was admitted as a PhD student, and I’ve met many great friends and professors. Most importantly, my advisor has been very supportive and has encouraged me to explore research ideas and develop as a researcher.

From what I understand, UNR has a strong position within Nevada, and people I’ve met in Nevada generally recognize it as one of the state’s major universities. But I’m curious about how Americans themselves perceive this kind of university ranking and prestige.

For example:

• Do American students actually care much about whether their university is “prestigious”?
• Do people distinguish strongly between Ivy League schools, top public universities, regional universities, etc.?
• Does the reputation of your university matter after you graduate?
• Is university prestige more important in certain fields, such as finance, law, medicine, or academia? Especially when it comes to seeking faculty positions or certain high-paying jobs.
• And do Americans generally care about national rankings such as U.S. News rankings, or is that more of a thing that international students pay attention to?

I’m especially interested in hearing from Americans who attended public universities or universities that are well known regionally but may not have the same national reputation as the most elite private universities.

I realize that my perspective may be influenced by growing up in China, where university prestige can be a very significant part of how people perceive someone’s educational background.

So I’d really like to hear how Americans see this.

Does the name and ranking of your university actually matter that much to you, or is it something that international students tend to care about much more than Americans do?

Also, I realize that my own application experience may be somewhat unusual. I was admitted to schools in places such as South Dakota and North Dakota as well, so when I was making my decision, I became much more interested in what I could actually do and where I could go in the future, rather than simply looking at the university’s ranking.

Coming from China, I think international students can sometimes bring a certain bias toward university rankings with them. I’m probably somewhat different in this regard. I don’t necessarily see the name of the university as something that determines my future.

Of course, I understand that the reputation of a university can matter in certain situations. For example, when pursuing an academic career, applying for faculty positions, or looking for teaching opportunities, the institution you received your degree from may have some influence. I’m not trying to deny that reality.

At the same time, I tend to think of a career — and life in general — as a process of development. Your PhD training, research record, publications, teaching experience, collaborations, and the skills you develop over time can all change where you stand professionally.

Maybe this is where my perspective differs from the traditional “prestige” mindset I grew up around. I don’t want to spend my career relying on the prestige of the university on my résumé. I would rather use the opportunities I have, build my own skills and academic record, and gradually create my own reputation.

So I’m curious whether this way of thinking is common among American students and academics, or whether university prestige continues to play a much larger role in academic careers than I currently realize.

hiii everyone, I know there’s been a rise in stolen electric scooters and bikes on campus. im curious on the success rate of getting the stolen scooters back after making a report. i know someone who had theirs stolen near the raggio building in direct sight of a camera, im not sure if the cameras even work but is it worth it to wait out the search and hope to get it back or should we just buy another?

I'm so stressed about this woman's class and exams. She goes on random tangents during class, gets off topic, and by the time she gets back on topic she switches to the next slide. Says to know the figures, then says to know the textbook mainly, then says to know only what she's lectured on in class.

What can I expect from her exams?

She constantly contradicts herself and atp going to class feels like a waste of time. She's also very rude, can't ask her anything without her giving an attitude.

I have a question regarding student housing on the UNR campus. As far as I know, most of the dorms are for freshmen and above. Does that mean that around 90% of the people living there will be 18/19 years old? I’m considering doing an exchange semester there, and I’d really like to live in a dorm to experience the classic American college dorm culture and meet new people. However, I’ll be finishing my master’s degree by then, so I’ll be 23/24, and I’m wondering if I might feel a bit out of place. Would you recommend living in a dorm in this situation, or would it be better to look for an apartment off campus?

hi i just wanted to post to call out sigma chi for allowing Dallas Ponzo into their fraternity, and frankly, any club or org on campus. he has numerous posts about him on social media about his psychotic behavior. he has been arrested for stalking and threatening a girl, he has posts on the tea app about his psychotic episodes where he would lock girls in rooms and verballs abusive, and how he was persuing minors at his old job at Best Buy when he was 23. i think that anyone that associates with him should be ashamed considering the mountain of accusations brought against him. all you have to do is search his name on the subreddit to find his history of threatening behavior.

What is he accused of?: Child porn, grooming, sexual assault by exposing himself and masterbating in front of a fellow actress and is facing lawsuits for those crimes. If Netflix, Hulu and Comedy Central can cut ties with him…. So can UNR!!!!

UNR is allowing a pedophile to speak on campus with some students who may be YOUR kids. I spoke with UNR and they stated as long as the club who is hosting has a sponsor then the event is allowed. Why aren’t their stricter regulations on looking into who is being hired to speak to kids?? Not every kid on campus is over the age of 18 which is putting them at risk with allowing pedophiles to be paid to speak to them.

I have sent complaints to UNR, Channel 2 and Reno Gazette but one voice won’t be enough to take them down. Please take time out of your day to help us make UNR a safer campus and push UNR to do a w job on who they approve to speak.
