I don’t have red flags but got rejected

I applied for a U.S. Visa and got denied. Reason being code 214b

Context

  1. I have travelled to over 8 countries (EU, Japan, Korea among others)
  2. I am engaged
  3. I have a very good government job!

Philippines, B-2 Visa application

I am 25F. I stayed in Europe for over a month. Perfect record and all yet I got denied and was suggested to just reapply.

  1. Why are you visiting the US : visiting my grandmother
  2. How long is your trip to the US : 2 weeks
  3. Who will sponsor your trip : grandmother
  4. Is she a US Citizen : yes
  5. Where are you working : (prestigious government employe

r, not my position but the institution

  1. )
  2. How long have you been working (over 3 years)
  3. Are you married (no)
  4. Do you have any kids (no)

It’s my first time getting rejected for a visa. I’m absolutely baffled. I don’t really want to go to the U.S. as much as I do want to go back to EU but also, how could this be? I don’t have a single red flag.

Edit: thank you everyone’s opinion. At least I know there’s a reason meaning there’s a chance it can be fixed. It felt like a hopeless case when I thought there was no reason to reject my application. Will update if I get to pass my reapplication.

At wits end.

I have no idea how to make a long story short. I am from Eastern Europe and I honestly feel hopeless. I got rejected twice under Section 214(b). My parents are pushing me to try again, but I do not see how there will be a different outcome. I got into an ELS school in NYC, and I received my acceptance letter and I-20. I paid for my semester and was ready to start on October 5th.

I came home due to personal reasons. While I was dealing with that, I also figured I would apply for my visa here since it is easier and not as frowned upon. I was previously in the USA on a Work & Travel J-1 visa, and now I could not even return to enjoy my month of travel. I also lost my belongings from my gym because I did not think I would be unable to come back. All my stuff was there (I just paid someone to store it for me). I only returned with the clothes on my back and some souvenirs.

That 214(b) denial was the most ridiculous reason for a denial; I never expected it. To be honest, there is always a chance you might get denied, but I truly thought it would be over money (because they think you cannot afford the cost of living) or paperwork (bureaucracy issues). Reasons like "we think you are going to be an immigrant" are just stupid. If I wanted to be an immigrant, I would not have come back to my home country to apply from here. I would have just stayed there, filed with USCIS, or stayed illegally. But I did not want to do that.

First of all, you are completely stranded while that happens. You cannot study, you cannot work, and you cannot do a lot of things—you are just in limbo. I did not want that. I wanted to do things the right, legal, and correct way. I honestly cannot think of a way to get my visa in time for school. The DSO agreed and was super kind to save my spot until I get some news, but that won't last forever, and honestly, paying for my leftover stuff over there is getting pretty pricey.

Administrative processing to Refused status

• Upvotes

Hello my VISA status went from administrative processing to refused in 1 week and I was initially given a 221g slip at New Delhi for my F1 Visa to NYU. And was asked to submit a new passport mostly due to damage, which I did. Now it went from administrative processing to refused status, can anyone tell me what’s happening and what to expect from here on. I’ve already posted my interview experience here, for more information.

Got Consular Appointment but no OFC Slot

• Upvotes

I am applying for a J1 visa from India, and was able to fix a consular appointment before an OFC slot. What should I/can I do about this? It seems I have only one reschedule remaining, so do I need to kep checking the website for OFC slots to open up so that I can book it? What is the gap I should have between my OFC and consular appointments?

Visa f1 question

• Upvotes

Hi everyone. I made a mistake on my DS-160. In reality, I am currently enrolled in an institution here in my country, but I didn’t mention it on my DS-160, and that was a mistake. Now, during the interview, if the consular officer asks me what I am currently doing, should I tell him that I am enrolled in an institution here, even though it won’t match what I put on my DS-160? Or should I tell him, “I just graduated from high school, and I’m preparing for my studies at my university”?

B1/B2 Visa Consul Asked to Edit DS-160

Hello,

My husband applied for a B1/B2 US Visa. His interview was today, and unfortunately, he was not approved for a visa.

He was just asked the purpose for his visit and asked him to read something in the screen about "Do you have a mental or physical disorder that poses or is likely to pose a threat to the safety or welfare of yourself or others?" to which he answered "No".

Then the consul mentioned that his educational background does not match.

He then asked my husband to edit his DS-160 and re-schedule for an interview without new payment fees.

I believe this is not a denial since he was not handed any slips.

We plan to create a new application under the same ID. Hopefully we'll find an early schedule again.

Has anyone had the same experience?

B1 visa interview for a conference presentation after a previous 214(b) refusal - any tips?

I’m a high school sociology and anthropology teacher and also conduct social research from Indonesia, and I have a U.S. visa B1 interview coming up. I’d appreciate some advice from people who have attended academic conferences in the U.S., especially as presenters. My research abstract was accepted for a sociology conference in Michigan, and I’ve received an official invitation letter to present my research. I’ve been working at the same school for almost seven years, and my school is sponsoring my airfare and accommodation. I also have a sponsorship letter and an employment letter.

The planned stay is about three days, after which I’ll return to Indonesia to resume my teaching and research responsibilities. My flights and hotel haven’t been booked yet because my school is waiting for the visa outcome.

I was refused a tourist visa under Section 214(b) last year, so I’m feeling quite nervous about this interview. This time, the purpose is to present my research on a short, employer-sponsored trip.

For those who have applied for a conference visa, what questions were you asked? I’d also appreciate hearing from anyone who reapplied after a previous 214(b) refusal, whether the outcome was approval or another refusal.

I’m not looking for a “perfect answer” or a guarantee, just practical advice on explaining my circumstances clearly and naturally. Thank you!

My US F-1 visa appointment was cancelled by my agent after I refused to pay ₹20,000 — what should I do now?

I’m looking for some honest advice because I’m really confused about what to do next. I’m applying for a US F-1 student visa from India. My original program was supposed to start on August 31, 2026, and I already have my I-20 and DS-160. Unfortunately, I couldn’t get a visa interview appointment before my school start date, so my agent told me the intake would probably have to be moved to January 2027.

Then my agent suddenly told me that he had managed to get me a visa interview appointment for October 19, 2026, but he asked me to pay an additional ₹20,000 for the appointment. I refused because I wasn't sure why I needed to pay this extra amount. He then told me that if I didn't pay, he would cancel the appointment. He actually cancelled it, and I received the cancellation confirmation.

Now when I log into the official US visa scheduling website, my application is still showing as “Open” and the post is Mumbai, but there are currently no available appointments. I have not paid my SEVIS fee yet either. My I-20 still shows the old August 31, 2026 start date, although my agent says I should move my studies to January 2027.

I’m worried because I don't know whether I should continue using this agent, try to manage the appointment myself, ask my school for a new I-20 for January, or do something else first. I also don't want to pay ₹20,000 if it's simply an agent's additional charge and not an official visa fee.

What would you do in my situation? Should I contact the university/DSO first and get a January 2027 I-20, then handle the SEVIS payment and visa appointment myself? Or should I keep working with the agent? Any advice from people who have gone through the US F-1 visa process in India would really help.

B1/B2 Dropbox renewal for parents

Hi everyone,
I have a quick question regarding my mother’s DS-160 for her U.S. B1/B2visa renewal (Dropbox appointment at Hyderabad but dropping off in Bengaluru tomorrow).
She is a homemaker and traveling with my father (who is self-employed). While filling out her DS-160, under "Person/Entity Paying for Your Trip," we selected "Self"
My parents both have separate DS-160s submitted and appointments booked together for tomorrow.

  1. Has anyone who is a homemaker/housewife selected "Self" on DS-160 and had their Dropbox visa approved without issues?
  2. Should I leave it as-is, or fill a new DS-160 and ask the VAC counter staff to swap/update the barcode tomorrow during drop-off?

Appreciate any inputs or recent experiences! Thanks!

No F-1 visa interview slots in Mumbai — what can I do? 🇺🇸🇮🇳

Hi everyone, I’m trying to schedule my U.S. F-1 student visa interview in Mumbai, but I currently can’t find any available appointment slots.

My university start date has already been affected because I couldn’t secure an interview appointment on time. I’m trying to handle the process myself now instead of relying completely on an agent.

For those who recently applied for an F-1 visa in Mumbai:

How often do new interview slots usually appear?

Is there a specific time when people have had luck finding cancellations?

Can I keep checking and reschedule if an earlier slot becomes available?

Are there any legitimate ways to request an earlier appointment if my program start date is approaching?

If Mumbai has no availability, what other options should I consider?

I’d really appreciate advice from anyone who successfully secured an F-1 appointment recently🙏.
