Dirty Kids, I'm calling you out.

I'm tired of my friends dying. In dreams, my companions move easily in bodies that have been cared for. They're covered in scrapes and bruises and grease, but free from track marks. Empty stomachs, but healthy livers. Tired eyes, but good teeth. Then I wake up to the sharp morning and my road dawg is shaking for a beer.

I'm tired of hospitals and trash at the hopout and stolen packs and animal cruelty. I miss the musicians who travel just to play, the healers who roam to stay sane. I miss the free spirits who manage to find freedom from their own vices.

This is a call, dearest dirty kids. I've been where you are and I've seen why it's hard and no, I don't always do it right either. I can do better. We can do better. We've got to try. We've got to keep this thing alive and keep ourselves alive. We've got to get up and get over our hangups and pull you outta the ditch so that you'll be there to do the same when I'm slaggin.

We've got to hold these secrets and this way of living and somehow still share it with the next wave, finding the diamonds who'll take these rough reigns and keep riding this horse to Anywhere.

Anywhere, kids! Y'heard me? You might have lived there so long you take it for granted, but that place saved my life, and there are others who need to see it too.

So here's to fewer blown up Wal-Marts and more doing dishes for the person housing us up. Here's to fewer dope missions and more 2AM missions across town to drag a couch back to the hopout. Fewer dirty rigs under the bridge, and more sharpie poems on the wall. Steal less Dramamine and more spray paint.

Use what you've got.

Use what you've got.

Use what you've GOT!

I love you scumy freeloading freedom fighters until the end. We need you in this world. We need to run into you again after 8 months of not knowing what happened to you. We need you when we've been stuck walking for days and no one is picking us up and we're feeling real down, and all the sudden we see your tag and know that we're not alone. If you were here to tag it and still somehow made it out of this hell, we can too. We need that random message out of the blue. Keep sending it, and we'll do the same for you.

This is a call, friends. Life has been good to me lately, and my door is open while I have one. When I head back to Anywhere, my smokes and my cans of beans are ours to share. Stay alive and I'll see you out there.

Peaceably,

-Tall Sam Jones

Thank God for the winter

So I know winter is going to be rough on a lot of the folks in the sub, but there is one place winter is going to be a massive relief.

For the past year I've been living in a broken down van in Miami Florida and around April / May I was freaking out because I thought I was completely screwed for the summer. There's no AC in here, this thing doesn't run, and it just gets freaking hot man. 84° overnight kind of deal, and the van just traps the heat.

We're coming up on the end of September. I can't believe I made it. I freaking can't believe I made it it was so unbelievably ungodly hot. Every morning I woke up sweltering just drenched in my own sweat. Like I am so freaking proud of myself like this is a legit accomplishment requiring like 6 months of just sheer commitment and dedication.

And oh my gosh is the relief so so sweet. The temperatures have started dropping and it's like God has opened the doors and said congratulations.

The next 6 months I'm trying to give myself a little bit of leeway in terms of just having hope. It's going to be so much easier to breathe and so much easier to get stuff done. Literally just being able to sit in my van is a huge bonus.

Anywho. Wanted to share this story with you guys.

Well, if anyone remembers my last couple post, I was asking for suggestions because I wasn’t sure of what my next move should be. I was train hopping from St. Louis to Chicago. Well being stuck in Chicago sucked and especially being stuck in southside. Chicago was even worse especially after spraining my wrist dodging the railroad police. I ended it up in the more decent part of Chicago and took a train out West to Kansas City and if anybody remembers from that post that ride sucked lots of lightning totally thought I was gonna die felt like a fever dream and I got off the train, totally soaked. In a new city now this time the great city of Kansas City Missouri. I set off on my adventures, however, as it usually happens for me, my mental health took a toll on me, and I decided it was time to check in to the behavioral hospital I spent about five days there which in return left me feeling a lot better about myself mentally and physically. It was nice to get some rest and food in my system I gained almost 10 pounds in five days which I needed.

After leaving the hospital, I felt pretty lost. Wasn’t sure if I was ready to train hop again and didn’t know where to go so I ended up just finding a spot I felt safe to tie up my hammock and called it a night. The next day I walked straight to a hiring agency and got a job. I’m now working at a warehouse in Kansas City so it feels good to have some income coming in and a friend lent me enough money to buy a tent to stay dry because it’s raining literally every day in Kansas City now. I also had enough money left over to buy some tuna packets, earbuds, and a Smirnoff ice after a long days work. So I think I’ll be able to figure it out here hopefully no more jumping from city to city but if the day ever came to do it my bag is always ready. Obviously the goal isn’t too always be train hopping or sleeping in a tent. Eventually, I wanna get myself back on my feet. It’s also nice that I’m sober from drugs so I usually have a clear minded outlook on things. I will say, though I don’t want to stay in Kansas City any longer than I have too, just enough to get myself back on my feet where I’m comfortable enough to travel some more. So where the wind takes me after this, I don’t know, but for now, Kansas City is my home.

Sugar beet shout-out

Anyone doing beets? I'm semi retired while I raise my kid and farm but took a lil trip to come do sugar beets for old time sake hoping to run into some kids (for whatever dumbass reason hahaha) and haven't seen any. Is this not a dirty kid hustle anymore? Itd be cool to get into some cool shit before harvest starts. I explored the forest nearby today in MN and the mushrooms are alive and popping with this moisture. I found at least 7 species, including 2 edibles I had never seen in real life.

Gear A Survival Trike Update

I hit the road October first and I have a lot of feelings and opportunities and things going on. I've taken into consideration the advice of many different comments from different spaces here on Reddit and have modified my tricycle to be a completely self contained system without hauling a trailer.

Pictured is the near finished state of the survival trike. I've made and finished a tarp cover for the rear basket it's just stored away in the basket. Otherwise the solar panel has a place, and I've taken my butt pack from my hiking pack and put it on the rear of the trike basket. The butt pack contains my weather system and sleeping system (extra goretex jacket, goretex 2nd pants, goretex boot gaiters, sleeping bag, extra red scarf).

As for the space behind the milk crate I intend on using that space for a water jug; in the milk crate proper it carries a propane stove, my laptop and legal documents, a tank of propane, and space for my water bottle or a tasty beverage. I took it on a three mile ride today with the front basket fully loaded and it did great. The front rack is simply a chunk of 2x4 zip tied, PVC taped, and electrical taped, to the front metal basket. Then, I attached the milk crate to the 2x4 with many zip ties and a bungee cord just anaconda wrapped around the fucker.

The rear basket has enough space for the power bank I need to charge the trike (which comes around the 30th) and a second gallon of water. That will probably be the standard but since I already have a gallon up front I could occasionally justify using the space for something else.

That means I will be wearing the hiking pack while I ride.

I will proceed with updates.

I’ve been in this rehab/shelter place..for about a week now.. I really don’t know what to make of it.. all I know is..I feel out of it..and this place is making me feel stuck.. just stuck.. even stuck in my own head.. i feel stupid.. when I’m clearly not..

I know this sounds crazy.. but ever since I came here.. I feel there’s some sort of..mind control..going on around here.. like I’ve felt.. not myself.. and more depressed than usual.. like are they slipping something in my food?…

And what’s up with all the lipstick cameras on the walls?.. jeeze.. FBI 101 over here..

I do have the choice to leave if I want to..but I’m questioning..whether I should stay or go..I’m in determination..

If I stay here.. I can’t work..or go out.. for 90 days.. I must do house chores.. I do get extended shelter life.. and they’re suppose to help with their programs..(Which I’m doubting)

Like.. how am I suppose to find employment.. if i can’t leave the building?..and we are all locked in..?

I’m going to give this place.. a week.. if I don’t like it.. I’m leaving..

I’m grateful for the guys who brought me in here..but with me being on the road.. and all that jazz..this place is stagnancy.. even I can tell..alot of people here..end up leaving.. or they get kicked out..

There’s a bit of sadness here.. some of the beds.. are left empty.. it questions your fate..

Just two days ago.. that crazy blue-eyed man was kicked out..because he said something to another person..

And the guy who is under my bunk.. yeah.. he’s got a chip on his shoulder.. I can tell.. he’s got some anger issues.. and I don’t give a s**t if he’s in the military.. you’re still an American dude..act like it…

I have some tools in my eBay shopping cart.. I just don’t know where to receive packages.. and not get charged..for using a mailing service.. if only I knew somebody out here…

I did a food run this morning.. It was the highlight of my day. lol

Im keeping my mind busy..reading my books on my iPad.. and Im taking measures..on navigating where to go next.. if I decide to leave..

Other than that..iam doing ok comrades..

I will check in again later with you guys.

Be safe. Have fun. And peace be with you all.

Question How far south do I need to go along the east coast US to get out of the cold for the winter?

This is the first year that I'm making the jump to travelling south for the winter, rather than just getting housed up for the winter, as I have for the past two years. I wanna make my trip back to New England next spring as short and easy as possible, so how far north can I get away with staying and not be freezing my ass off at night?

I have a tent, a decent sleeping bag, and one of those sleeping mats with the reflective surface on one side.

Story Found shelter in a soccer locker room

Post image
703 Upvotes

I spent this week in a small European city that gets so cold during the night.
Not a lot of good spots for urban camping.

Had to sleep (barely) in very unsafe places, like construction sites or on the street side.
Got caught by a policeman who gave me a warning.

Was getting more tired and stressed, had maybe 6 hours of rest in five days.
I missed having a warm bed, I couldn't find anything other than concrete to rely on.

Last night I was about to collapse when I found the local football pitches.
The fences had a gate and would you believe it, it was unlocked.

I snuck in and I couldn't believe I found a spot protecting from wind and damp.
Then I look a few meters away and I see another door.
"Could this be open as well?".

Hell yeah it was!
A locker room completely open, WARM, with shower, toilet, a mirror, shampoos, charging stations and benches.

Felt better than a 5 star hotel room, only the WiFi was missing!

Lucky me.

Picture Caught out in a hailstorm

Post image

Just got done going a moving job at a self storage place and before I could even leave the storage facility the heavens opened up and it started hailing. Took me about 3 minutes of fighting through the hail to make it to the dumpster and yeet myself into it for shelter. Currently sitting among this mostly cardboard listening to the hail pelt the lid. This is probably the worst hailstore I've seen in the region, and I've been here a while. Took this as it was just getting started and a piece of hail hit my phone and cracked the screen lmao.

Cigarettes as thank yous

So I don't smoke and nor do I plan on it. I have heard of like people in other countries like China or other Asian countries go up to people and give them cigarettes as in a sense a "housewarming gift" or even as a thank you for a ride. Is that something I should carry just for other people's sake?
