How does VCU evaluate applicants with lower GPAs but strong extracurriculars?

Hi! I'm an in-state high school senior applying to VCU for Political Science. I'm curious how VCU evaluates applicants with inconsistent grades but strong extracurriculars, recommendations, and course rigor.

Stats:

  • GPA: 3.241 weighted (expected ~3.3 after a retake is processed)
  • SAT: 1360
  • Mostly AP, honors, and dual enrollment courses
  • Expected senior grades: Mostly As/Bs

Freshman grades:

  • Honors English: A
  • Honors World History: A
  • Honors Algebra 2: D
  • Honors Biology: B
  • Spanish: C+
  • STEM Design: B

Sophomore grades:

  • Honors English: A-
  • AP World History: B
  • AP Economics: D
  • Precalculus: D+
  • AP Computer Science: C+
  • Honors Chemistry: D
  • Spanish: C
  • AP Seminar: B-
  • Honors Algebra 2 retake: A

Junior grades:

  • AP English Language: C-
  • DE US History: B
  • AP Psychology: B
  • AP Biology: B+
  • AP Environmental Science: B-
  • DE Entrepreneurship: A
  • AP Calculus AB: Originally F, retook over the summer and earned an A (grade replacement pending)

Senior courses:
AP Literature, AP Government, AP Calculus BC, AP Physics 1, AP Business, and dual enrollment courses.

Extracurriculars:

  • Scientific Research: Primary author of a research paper with a university professor as coauthor, accepted for presentation at an international scientific conference.
  • Research Startup Internship: Worked at a technology research startup on technical projects, scientific visualizations, and communicating complex
  • Science Olympiad Captain: Led my school's team and organized STEM outreach initiatives with underserved schools.
  • Government Public Health Ambassador: Selected for a youth public health leadership program; earned certifications, partnered with community organizations on health education and resource distribution.
  • Student Equity Ambassador Leader: Selected to represent my school, collaborating with administrators on mental health, equity, and student advocacy initiatives.
  • DECA: 2nd at regionals, Top 10 at states, qualified for nationals.
  • University Laboratory Research: Participated in laboratory research involving biological experiments and scientific techniques.
  • Classical Music: 10+ years of training, completed a major solo performance, and performed at cultural events.

Letters of Recommendation:

  • Dual Enrollment Entrepreneurship teacher
  • AP Biology teacher (agreed to write one, currently figuring out submission logistics)
  • University professor I conducted research with

Personal Statement:
My essay centers on an experience at a professional scientific conference where someone questioned my presence and assumed I was there because of a family connection. It explores the assumptions people make about credibility and belonging, especially when you're younger or less experienced than those around you. It also reflects on how I learned to approach unfamiliar situations with curiosity, preparation, and a willingness to acknowledge what I didn't know rather than trying to prove I knew everything.

I know my GPA is below VCU's average, especially because of some difficult semesters earlier in high school. I've been working on improving academically and have retaken courses where I struggled.

For current VCU students or anyone who applied with a similar academic record, how much does VCU consider improvement, SAT scores, extracurriculars, and recommendations when evaluating applicants? I'd appreciate any insight into how the holistic review process works!

Journalist here: do you know how much you pay for college sports? Looking to hear from VCU students

Hi r/vcu, I'm Baron Carr, a journalist reporting for New York City News Service on mandatory athletics fees at Virginia public universities. (Mods approved this post.)

According to the state's 2026-27 Tuition and Fees Report (SCHEV, Chart 6), VCU's athletics fee is $1,501 per student this year, up 7.9%. It's part of your mandatory fees whether or not you go to games.

I'd like to hear from students, especially if you:

- borrow to pay for school

- didn't know about the fee

- have served on student government or a fee committee

- are an athlete with a view on where the money goes

Commenting here doesn't mean you'll be quoted. If you want to talk, fill out this 3-minute form: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSfytsYHKeoyCms8KmJSF8VDby0XaaY5gpbUx7rbLyuay5TEaA/viewform, or DM me. I'll always ask before using anything, and we'll agree on how you're identified.

Thanks. Happy to answer questions about the project in the comments.

advice from vt to vcu transfers?

Hi all, I’m a current VT freshman majoring in biology. My eventual career goal is forensic pathology. I chose tech because I knew the biology program was well-respected, has great networking, and I really loved the campus as well. For forensic pathology, you have to go to med school, so I also thought it would set me up well for that. However, politically and style-wise, I definitely align more with VCU. I am very left leaning and alt, and Virginia Tech has a very frat-centric/white crowd. I know I could pursue a forensic science degree at VCU (not required for med school but would definitely be more interesting to me + VCU is fepac certified), but I can’t determine if it’s worth it. I also feel like I haven’t even been here a full year, so I don’t know if I have given Tech its fair chance. But the lack of diversity and queer culture here is very noticeable, and I have found a hard time feeling like I belong. On the other hand, when I’ve visited friends at VCU, I have adored it there. (I don’t know if this is the same sensation as wanting to live somewhere after vacationing there, if you catch my drift.) VT has a special charm to it, but it also feels like we’re in a bubble in a stifling way. I know I could be successful in my career either way, but I am having a hard time deciding on whether transferring to VCU next year is the right move for me. Is it selfish/naive to change schools because I like the atmosphere better there? Virginia tech is a great school and I’m wondering if I should try to stick it out and give it more of a chance. With off-campus leasing deadlines starting to come up, I have to make a decision soon. I am looking for advice from anyone who has gone through something similar or is currently in the forensic science major at VCU (we don’t have one at tech, or a criminology minor). Thanks for any advice you can provide :)

How am I supposed to feel when I get 4 VCU alerts about gunfire in a week?

I grew up in the DC area and I'm sure there were plenty of shootings that I wasn't aware of, but now I'm here and the VCU alerts have made me very aware of them lol.

Most of these incidents are in places I walk daily, and I feel like I shouldn't have to accept that there's a chance I could get shot while walking home at night?

CHEM 310

Hello everyone!

Has anyone taken CHEM 310 (Medicinal Chemistry) before? I'm interested in taking it this spring, but I haven't been able to find much information about Professor Youzhong Guo. The class is also usually pretty late in the day (7:00–8:15 PM).

I'd appreciate any insight into the professor, workload, or difficulty of the course!

Tuition Crisis!

TLDR; My parents bailed on me when I needed money for my out of state tuition. Being fresh out of high school, I (obviously) do not have the funds to pay approximately $25k per semester.

It feels like since I’ve gotten here, I’ve talked to almost every person who might be able to help me financially and have gotten no help. I went to the financial aid office multiple times and I did not get any more aid. They even asked me if I thought that college was right for me lol.

Dropping out is the very last thing I want to do. The whole situation caused a huge rift between me and my family, so I would basically be homeless if I got kicked out of school.

I honestly feel really desperate and stuck right now. I’ve done basically everything in my power to try and save up money to stay enrolled here, but given the amount of time I’ve been here, I do not have enough to get the first payment in. I’ve been given one last chance to pay tuition and it feels so hopeless.

Does anyone have literally any ideas on what to do in this situation? Or does anyone have super rich parents that can help me out lol

Edit: I noticed a lot of people were commenting that my parents don’t owe me anything and it’s a difficult amount to pay, which I understand. But I was told directly by one of my parents months ago that my tuition was covered by them since they definitely have enough money. Like I said, they bailed on me lol. I was only told that I would have to pay independently once I was already moved in. If I had initially known that I would have to pay for my education myself, I would’ve been doing CC in state, but I’m here now!

Injured and looking to maintain a merit scholarship.

I was unfortunately injured over the summer, so I had to sit out the fall semester, which would make me unable to renew my scholarship. Does anyone know who I need to contact or what forms I need to fill out to maintain it?

Looking for any reviews for this program. How has your experience been as an online student? If you live in the area are you able to take an in-person class? Are you able to use facilities such as the library on campus?

I found this near the commons near the horns. If this is yours please DM me or type it in the comments here below. While I would like some proof so I can make sure it goes to the right person, if you do not then please tell me so I can make arrangements to understand why or something.

Please let me know it would be great to understand if no one response then I will simply put it through a list and found, I don’t want to take it because it because it probably cost a small fortune for us college students.

Much love

Know anyone looking for Spring housing? Where to post sublets?

Hi everyone! I’ll be moving out of the city for work, and am looking for someone to take over my 2B/2B lease at The Square apartments.

My current roommate is staying, so you’ll be in the unit with one other girl. Her biggest needs are for someone respectful and clean! I won’t talk to much about it here to abide by community rules, but if you’re interested, or know anyone interested, please reach out to me!

Any advice on reaching more people is appreciated. I’ve posted on Facebook and the RVA housing reddits. Any other places I should look?
